Sir Blondeville Arrives in Redhill Pub People’s new and exclusive cask ale has landed in Redhill after weeks of marketing activity in the city. It’s been impossible to escape billboards, posters, adverts in the press and Facebook activity surrounding the medieval character and now we can reveal what all the fuss is about. The local pub company which operate the Waggon & Horses on Mansfield Road have teamed up with Nottingham Brewery in Radford to produce a limited edition exclusive beer, Sir Blondeville 1194. The pale ale weighs in at a modest 4.0% and has already been hailed a huge success, even being voted as Nottingham Post’s Pint Of The Week the same week it was launched at the pubco’s flagship ale house The Lion in Basford. As well as the Waggon & Horses, Sir Blondeville 1194 will also be available at Pub People’s other landmark Nottingham pubs such as the Robin Hood in Sherwood,
Bunkers Hill in Hockley and the newly refurbished Green Dragon in Hucknall. The beer has been named after a character from Nottingham’s history books. In 1194, a historic battle took place at Nottingham castle when the supporters of Prince John captured it. The castle was the site of a decisive siege when King Richard I, aided by Sir Blondeville, returned to England and besieged the castle with the siege machines he had used at Jerusalem. Fans of Sir Blondeville’s official Facebook page (facebook.com/sirblondeville) will be entered into a prize draw at the end of the month and we’ll have official merchandise to giveaway including t-shirts, key rings and, of course, beer! As well as showcasing this exclusive beer Waggon & Horses are looking forward to a summer full of activities including the Euro 2012 Tournament, London Olympics and some exciting promotions you won’t want to miss.

Cat fosterers urgently needed! Animal Accident Rescue Unit was created to provide a free ambulance service for pet owners without the means to travel to the vets themselves. Since then, it has become a badly needed lifeline, also taking in sick and injured animals & birds, arranging for their treatment and caring for them in foster homes until either their owner can be traced or new homes can be found. The Charity is staffed entirely by unpaid volunteers working from their own homes. We’ve taken in so many cats over the last few months that we desperately need new fosterers who can provide a temporary home for one of our rescued cats. If you think you can help us, please ring our Recruitment Officer on 0115 9563799.
Volunteer Drivers Needed! Local Nottingham-based charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit are looking for volunteer drivers with their own car who have a couple of hours to spare during the daytime. We really need your help to transport rescued animals to and from vets and foster homes. If you’d like to learn more, please ring our Recruitment Officer on 0115 9563799. Other volunteering roles are also available.

Workers could get hot under the collar as summer temperatures rise If temperatures ever start to rise, an employment expert is warning workers not to wear inappropriate clothes which push the boundaries of their employer’s dress codes. Angela Shaw, Employment Solicitor at Massers in Nottingham, believes employers have certain expectations from workers to dress smartly in the workplace regardless of whether temperatures are rising or not. Workers tend to feel more relaxed in the warmer weather and this is reflected in what they wear. Turning up to work in shorts, vest tops or white socks and sandals may not be deemed acceptable in the workplace, especially if workers have a client facing role. Behind the fashion advice, there is a serious message for office workers. Many organisations will have a dress code.
As the temperatures rise, workers could be inadvertently breaking these codes and could end up at the centre of disciplinary action. Workers must still comply with the health and safety laws and discarding protective clothing in hot weather could result in accident or injury. Whilst the issue of wearing summer fashions in the workplace may seem trivial, there is nothing preventing the relaxtion of dress codes over the summer months, as long as standards and expectations are clear. Advice to employers is that they need to be clear on dress codes and policies regarding protective clothing. Employees should note that employers have a duty to protect the reputation of that business.

The Race Is On: Free Insulation for All in 2012
“Double Honour in Diamond Year!”
Time’s running out to get your home insulated for free during 2012. Until the end of this year households in Gedling can take advantage of free loft and cavity wall insulation for their home regardless of their income, thanks to Warmstreets, the only insulation scheme endorsed by Gedling Borough Council. This time limited offer includes free loft insulation for any private household (owned or rented) that currently has none (or less than 100mm), as well as free cavity wall insulation. Those properties which already have at least 100mm of loft insulation can pay a subsidised price of just £99 to have it topped up to the recommended level of 270mm. Cllr Paul Feeney, Portfolio holder for Environment and Sustainability at Gedling Borough Council said: “This offer is better than free! Not only can homeowners have loft and cavity wall insulation installed without charge, you will save money on your energy bills for years to come as your home will be easier to heat – up to £175 a year if you install loft insulation. It will also reduce the impact of your home on the environment. “Free insulation is only possible due to government subsidies which are due to end in December 2012. After that we expect loft and cavity wall insulation to cost several hundred pounds, so take advantage while you can!” Householders who are interested can call Warmstreets on 0800 043 9569, or if calling from a mobile, 0333 577 9569, to arrange a survey today. Alternatively, visit: www. warmstreets.co.uk. Offers are subject to survey and depend on house size.

As the Bestwood Male Voice Choir has the honour of sharing its Diamond Anniversary with Her majesty the Queen this year, it was invited to record the National Anthem for a special BBC Radio 2 programme entitled ‘We are sixty’. The programme’s producer, Andy West, travelled up from London especially to record the choir singing the National Anthem, in a variety of arrangements, at the Central Methodist Church, in Hucknall on the 20 April. The recordings will be used as incidental music and a finale to the programme, which will be broadcast on Sunday, 3 June at 7.00pm. As if this were not enough, the choir has been invited to sing at the Queen’s visit when Her Majesty visits Nottingham on the 13 June. The choir is to choose six pieces to sing at an outdoor venue, with details to be confirmed at a later date. This is an exciting addition to the choir’s 60th anniversary celebrations, as it builds up to its Gala Diamond Anniversary Concert at the Albert Hall, in Nottingham on Sunday, 23 September 2012 at 6.30pm. Proceeds from the concert will be divided equally between the Maggie’s Nottingham Appeal and choir funds.

Issue No. 10
In This Issue
We are living at a time when history is being created, enabling us all to create lifetime memories to share with others for years to come!! We will all, like it or not, be part of the Olympics and Diamond Jubilee this year. I would particularly encourage everyone to become involved with the “Notts in Knots” initiative, and visit one of the historic Jubilee beacons being lit across the United Kingdom!
Introduction
At a more local level there is lots happening with the Arnold Local Area Forum members who will be bringing you very interesting walks, talks and shows!! The not to be missed events for me include the free AKRA fun day and the Arnold Carnival where the ALAF will have a stand in the information marquee – please do come along and see us for a chat.

Whilst on the subject of celebrations, on a personal note I would like to congratulate Notts County F.C. on their reaching 150 years, as the oldest Football League club in the world. Formed in 1862 the club was unfortunate not to make this seasons play-offs by goal difference, but are celebrating with various functions during the year. Have a safe and enjoyable summer. Bob Tait, Chairman ALAF
OLYMPICS 2012 The Olympic Relay Torch will be passing through Nottinghamshire on the 28th June 2012 and provides a one off opportunity to join in the celebrations. This reminds me that we can all be torch bearers in our family and or community by making and honouring a personal pledge by tying any green ribbon to a tree. This “Notts in Knots” initiative has encouraged many people to make pledges ranging from: picking
up litter and not throwing it; getting a neighbours shopping; helping an elderly person with their gardening; passing on an artistic, practical, musical skill; organising a community event; or even starting up a local group. There are further details and also funding of up to £200 available for any projects inspired by the Olympics (for further information on the route and to access the funding see www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/ sportforall).
The Arnold Local Area Forum pages are sponsored through the: Nottinghamshire County Council Division Fund allocation of Councillors Ged Clarke, Carol Pepper and Mel Shepherd; and Gedling Borough Funds allocation of Councillor Suzanne Prew-Smith
DIAMOND JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS To celebrate the Diamond Jubilee in Gedling Borough, there’s plenty to do during the extended bank holiday weekend between Saturday 2 and Tuesday 5 June. There’s a free 1950’s Jubilee themed fun afternoon taking place at Arnot Hill Park in Arnold on Sunday 3 June between 1-4pm. There’ll be arts and crafts, fun family races plus a 50’s style band with dancing and a special award ceremony with the Mayor of Gedling. Come along and join in the family fun. If your community group or organisation would like to be involved in hosting a Jubilee event or street party, an event hosting pack can be downloaded from our website. Visit www. gedling.gov.uk/jubilee for Queen’s Diamond Jubilee related news, including events, bank holiday information, closures and street party information. Nottinghamshire County Council’s Diamond Jubilee Beacon Spectacular will be held on Monday 4 June 2012 from 7.45pm to 11pm at the National Water Sports Centre, Holme Pierrepont. Everyone is welcome to this spectacular and unique highlight celebration which includes free entertainment, an amazing
fireworks display and lighting of the Beacon. Other activities include: powerboat and hovercraft demonstration on the lake; Live music by Carmen Ghia and the Hot Rods and Red Hot swing and jazz band; Children’s rides; Face painting; Craft fair; Birds of Prey rescue centre display; Performance artists; food and drink; and lots more!! Nottinghamshire County Council Leader Councillor Kay Cutts said: “This is a once in a lifetime chance to celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and I’d like to pay tribute to Her Majesty The Queen for sixty years of public service. Other Beacons will be lit across villages in the county, but having a Beacon lit on the water will be extra special. This is a great opportunity to be entertained in a wonderful setting and we look forward very much to the celebrations.” The Pageantmaster of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Beacons has warmly welcomed the plans at the National Water Sports Centre as it is believed to be the only event nationally where a Beacon will be lit on water on 4 June. 2,012 Beacons will be lit across the country and satellite images taken to show Her Majesty the celebrations being held in her honour. Beacons will also be lit in Commonwealth and other countries. A Beacon chain is a symbol of unity across towns, borders, countries and continents.

ARNOLD U3A
“LEARNING AND FUN FOR OLDER PEOPLE” U3A stands for The University of The Third Age. It is not a university in the usual sense. Instead, it consists of selfhelp, self-managed, lifelong learning cooperatives all over the UK. Each local U3A is a charity in its own right that is run entirely by volunteers. Do you live in or near Arnold, Nottingham? Are you an older person who isn’t in fulltime work? If so, U3A could be for you. There is lots happening, at different times on various days, so there’s a good chance you’ll find something interesting that fits your diary. The main meetings are usually held on the first Tuesday of the month at Arnold Methodist Church located on the corner of Front Street and Worrall Avenue. King George V Playing Field - Consultation Groundwork Greater Nottingham, which is a charitable organisation delivering services to inspire people and places, is working in partnership with Gedling Borough Council to improve King George V Playing Fields both in terms of fund raising and the development of design proposals and subsequent implementation of improvement works. Part of this process is to carry out consultation with the local community and groups to find out: • How the park is used currently? • What issues affect the park? • What improved or new facilities are needed, for example new play equipment, more football pitches, footpaths, seating? • What the community would like to be able to do in the park? The consultation aims to obtain both positive and constructive negative feedback through a questionnaire and face to face consultation with known user groups such as the cricket and football teams and through the youth work in Killisick. Groundwork staff will also be attending the local Wednesday Market in Arnold to carry out one to one consultation in the community. A further consultation event at King George V Playing Field in conjunction with the Groundwork youth and play team, who can provide sport and games, is planned for the end of May. If you require any further information or would like to contribute to the consultation please contact Jo Phelan, Places Team Leader, Groundwork Greater Nottingham Tel: 0115 978 8212 ARNOLD LOCAL HISTORY GROUP Once again it is time to gather at Arnot Hill Park for the Arnold Carnival and all the fun of the fair. NEW WRITERS UK LAUNCH THE 4TH ANNUAL COMPETITION Have you ever wondered how to get your children away from the television or computer games and encourage them to use their own imagination? Or does your son or daughter already enjoy writing their own stories or poems and would like enter them into an entirely free, County Council supported competition? Over the last 3 years, over 150 children and young people in Nottinghamshire have entered the New Writers UK Creative Writing Competition for Children and Young People; entrants from the Gedling area have consistently been among the finalists indicating that the future of writing talent is safe in their hands. On Saturday, June 9th, the authors of New Writers UK launch the 4th annual competition at Rufford Abbey Country Park. Over the previous 3 years many of Nottinghamshire’s imaginative young people have entered this competition, won prizes, had their entries published and, unlike many other competitions, received free copies of their books at an official presentation ceremony.
ARNOLD ART SOCIETY'S SPRING EXHIBITION The Deputy Mayor of Gedling Borough Council, Councillor Sandra Barnes attended the Arnold Art Society's Spring exhibition that was held on 6 May. She is pictured below presenting an award for the best pastel painting to Karen Sheridan (right) with Mrs Josie Mangham (left).
Application forms to enter the competition can be downloaded from the New Writers UK website from 9th June. Forms will also be available at Rufford , from the Arnold Local Area Forum exhibit in the Craft marquee at the Arnold Carnival on 16th and 17th June, from Arnold Library and many other venues. The closing date for entries is Monday, 30th July, 2012. As in previous years, young people in the following groups are eligible to enter: Group One: Primary School Years 4 to 6; Group Two: Secondary School Years 7 and 8 and Group Three: Secondary School Years 9 and 10. In addition, this year we are creating a further category for young people 18 years old or under as of 30th July. For further information on the competition, other events or local authors, please visit www. newwritersuk.co.uk or email Julie@newwritersuk. co.uk or john@newwritersuk.co.uk

“Move fast without sacrificing the equity in your home” is the message from local property buyer, Oliver.
Many companies offer to buy your house quick, but expect a large hit on your sale price. It doesn’t have to be this way! Oliver offers a local home buying service that is fair, ethical and avoids the time and cost associated with estate agents, HIPs and readying your property for sale. Oliver will first seek to understand what you are trying to achieve by selling and deliver a tailored solution that works for you. What amazes people the most is how fast and simple the whole process is. From contacting Oliver to handing over the keys in less than 14 days is typical.

The Lazy Gardener.... Hits the decks
Decking can really add another dimension to a garden. A few years ago we replaced our tired and depressing mixed level concrete patio with a lovely new deck. It was hard work but well worth it. Having it all on one level makes the garden seem so much bigger.
can covers 50 sq mtres of decking with two coats.
After a couple of harsh winters it now looks very dirty and scruffy and is in desperate need of some TLC. This is a good time of year to get on top of this job - so that it looks gorgeous for all those hot summer days and bbq parties (fingers crossed!)
Now would also be a good time to tart up any tired looking garden furniture. Luckily our small table and chairs are metal and glass so require little more than a good scrub with some soapy water.
One of the key things to bear in mind before you start is to check for a few days of dry weather. You need this to enable the products to dry properly. There are three main steps to deck maintenance; cleaning, restoring and protecting. Cleaning - There are loads of cleaning preparations specifically designed for decking. We use Swarfega Decking Cleaner, £9.98 for 5ltrs from B & Q. Most garden centres and DIY stores sell a good selection of branded and own label products.
So there you go - with a couple of days graft, the decking will look like new and you can sit back and enjoy a cold beer and admire your hard work.
Elsewhere in the garden - the runner beans are coming along nicely on the window sill and my mum has kindly donated various other vegetable seeds which will be going into the garden over the next couple of months. I received a lovely email from a reader recently. Gaynor runs a stall on Sherwood market called Sherwood Specialilty Herbs and Edible Plants. The market is held on the first Saturday of the month through til August from 10am til 2pm. Gaynor will be selling different plants every month. I can’t wait to get along and stock up.
First you need to get the deck clear of debris. We brush and then hoover the deck to get all the old leaves and dirt off. Then you can apply the cleaner following the manufacturers instructions. Restoring and Protecting - Once the decking is clean and dry we use Ronseal Decking Oil in Clear, £39.98 for 5 ltrs from B & Q. Decking oil is a special treatment/ preserver that penetrates the timber so as well as looking good it also protects the wood from the elements. We apply the oil using a large paint brush - which takes a while - after leaving to dry you need to apply a second coat. A 5ltr
If you are thinking of having decking and can’t face the thought of doing it yourself there are a number of businesses listed in the magazine who would be delighted to come and quote you. Many of these businesses will also restore old decking for you. © Ali Wale

Easier Recycling of Small Electrical Items in Gedling Thanks to New Initiative
Citizens Advice Bureau at Gedling Borough Council from May
Gedling residents with unwanted small electrical equipment can now recycle them locally thanks to new WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) banks.
A free advice and information service is launching through Gedling Borough Council this May.
The WEEE banks can be found with our other recycling banks on Haywood Road, Mapperley, Morrisons in Colwick, Sainsburys in Arnold and Milton Court in Ravenshead. They are distinguishable by their grey colour with pink writing and the Gedling Borough Council logo. The banks are a joint initiative between Gedling Borough Council and Veolia Environmental Services, Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors. They are suitable for small electrical items such as toasters and irons and once collected, will be sent on for recycling. Other bulkier items such as fridges and freezers can be taken to a Household Waste Recycle Centre or collected by Gedling Borough Council for a small charge. The banks are running as a pilot scheme and if proven successful, will be rolled out to other districts across the county.

Painting & Timber Maintenance
This time of year is usually perfect for the maintenance of paint on your home. My personal experience in this field is extensive as every school holiday I worked for Kelham Painting and Decorating. Often overlooked, it is a very important part of keeping rot and infestation away; it’s also a great way to quickly and massively improve the appearance of your property. Preparation is key. Sand down and remove rotten areas of timber. Treat then fill none structural damage with timber sections and/or quality filler, we like Ronseal products for this. Use good quality brushes, Harris are good. We are very impressed with the Dulux Trade Weathershield system of primer, undercoat and gloss or their masonry primer and paint. We find it outlasts many other paints and has a great finish. Keep your eye on the weather for dry periods.

Through the Forest by Bob Massey When driving or walking along the A60 Mansfield Road, it is hard to believe that this is one of the oldest routes in the country. The road was probably originally a wild beast tract through the forest that covered most of the land north of Nottingham. The earliest travellers were probably our Stone Age ancestors trying to find a way through the thicket. There is evidence that these earliest travellers stayed and built a village in what was to become Arnold. The settlement was constructed away from the road for protection from those who traversed it, but close enough so that the settlers could use it themselves.
has to pay a fine of £8” (£5000 in todays money). We talk of a road, but those of you who have visited Sherwood Forest in such places as Blidworth will know the paths through these trees are well maintained but are still tracks. This is far better than Mansfield Road would have been. In those days there were no systems in place to get the roads repaired. It would be very easy to get lost and this road was dangerous. The forest had hidden traps. Outlaws lurked, waiting for unsuspecting travellers and wild beasts roamed. Not the place to be without a trusted guide and definately not to be travelled upon at night. By the time travellers reached Redhill they had not passed through any villages since leaving Nottingham and would not pass through anymore for some time to come. Redhill was very much steeper in those days and so named after the red mud from the rich clay deposits which made it near impassable in wet weather. The weary travellers would have to face the climb up a very steep mud track which would have been very hard on foot and even more difficult with a horse or wagon.
Over the centuries, the Mansfield Road has been used by various invading armies ; Romans, Saxons and the Vikings have all marched along this road as it led from London via Leicester and Nottingham, to Blyth and York. The road passed by or through Arnold parish for 4 ½ miles and by the time of the Domesday Book in 1086, it was regarded as such an important route that it and the surrounding forest were strongly controlled by the King. The Doomsday book states; “that the road towards York is so guarded that if any one ploughs or makes a ditch within two perches of the King's road he
The village of Arnold was over half a mile away from Redhill hidden in the forest. As it could not be seen from the road it was difficult for travellers to get assistance. As time went the problem of climbing the hill became well known and the rules regarding the forests protection were relaxed so that a guide house could be built. This house provided local guides and extra horses to pull wagons up the hill It also provided food and a welcome rest place for the traveller. Over time this area developed around this trade and became the hamlet of Redhill, more of which in a future article.
I am researching the people and history Arnold and would like to hear from anyone with memories or photographs of Arnolds or the people involved. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG magazines

Penny’s B
outique
Ladies, welcome to Penny’s Boutique.... First of all let me introduce myself. My name is Penny and I am very excited to have been asked by the team at NG Magazines to write a regular fashion page. I have been buying, selling and dressing ladies in Fashion for quite a while now and I LOVE IT! I had the great pleasure of being the Fashion Advisor at John Lewis, Nottingham and last October opened my own shopBoutique 11 on Plains Road in Mapperley, selling “real clothes for real ladies”. I not only want to talk about the coming season’s colours, styles and prints but also about how to put that fashion together to suit YOUR particular age, shape and uniqueness. First of all, I’d like all you ladies out there to start truly believing that age and size are really nothing but numbers. It’s not the clothes that you wear but how you wear them and that’s all down to carefully picking things from current trends that suit your individual shape. Believe me ...every single one of us ladies has something about our bodies which we hate and complain about. The thing we need to do is enhance our favourite bits and disguise our bad bits! So here goes................ This coming summer it’s all about colour....lots and lots of colour, from acid greens and pinks to soft blues and yellows. Bright, bright coloured jeans and skinny trousers are everywhere and when teamed with a lovely simple white top or blouse, can really suit everyone. The trick is to
get the right shape and length of the top to wear with them. Team that with a fabulous brightly coloured loafer and you are good to go. Dresses are also very, very popular this summer. Lovely feminine “Julia Roberts” style dresses. Just pick the correct shape and length for your own body shape. Again in all sorts of pretty colours and patterns from tiny little daisy prints to huge bold asymmetrical designs. I love this very feminine look, especially its versatility. It can be made to look a little funky with leggings and a flat ballerina pump or any height wedge. It can be dressed up to be sophisticated with a simple patent court shoe..... Voila a dress that can take you absolutely anywhere. All I ask ladies is please don’t dismiss any fashion look until you have experimented a little. I have lost count of the number of times I’ve suggested ladies try on something a little different from what they would normally choose. To their surprise they’ve absolutely loved it and say “I feel like a new woman in this” or “I would have never thought I could wear this and I love it” Just remember, enjoy yourselves, try to make buying yourself a new outfit fun and if I can help in any way you know where to find me. Until next time....Happy Shopping Penny x Boutique 11, 0115 960 2006

Only one category of crime has seen an increase in the last six weeks, and that’s burglaries of outbuilding, like sheds and garages. With the lighter nights comes an increased likelihood of falling victim to burglars on the lookout for valuable items we keep outside, like lawnmowers and bicycles. Just six weeks into the new financial year, we are already recording significant reductions in crime where you live. All crime has fallen by a considerable 33%, which equates to 127 fewer victims of crime. House burglaries continue to be one of our top priorities and the work being carried out by the local beat teams and by CID detectives is certainly paying off. Reported house burglaries fell by 59.4% last year, which equates to 19 fewer victims already this financial year. Being a victim of burglary is an extremely intrusive and upsetting experience, which is why it’s so encouraging to know that we are successfully preventing more and more people from becoming victims. Residents have also undoubtedly played a significant role in tackling burglary as they are increasingly working with us to ensure they make it difficult for burglars who are intent on stealing their prized possessions. These results do not mean that Arnold is suddenly problem free.
I urge all residents to follow some very simple advice to safeguard against becoming a victim. Keep your shed in good condition so it’s not easy to break into and consider investing in an alarm. Mark and photograph valuable tools and equipment and register it at www.immobilise.com so it can be traced back to you if it is stolen and later recovered. Fit a padlock to your shed and consider putting wire mesh across its windows. You should also consider fitting a motion-activated outside light to deter burglars who rely on the cover of darkness. Plant prickly shrubs and plants near windows, drainpipes and fences and use gravel on driveways and paths to help alert you to anyone outside. The Rotary Club of Sherwood Sunrisers has a new home and now meets every Tuesday Morning at the Park Inn by Radisson, ( the old Savoy Hotel ) Mansfield Road, Nottingham NG5 2BT. We have over 30 members, Male, Female, Young and Old and are dedicated to helping others with our aim of “Service before Self”. We are part of Rotary International, a worldwide network of inspired individuals who direct their energy and enthusiasm to relevant social causes at home and overseas to change lives in communities. Rising Arnold Artist in Solo Exhibition
Arnold based artist Joe McKenna held his first solo exhibition of his works at the Nottinghamshire Society of Artists gallery on Friar Lane in April. The exhibition followed the success of Joe’s first show, which he shared with another more established artist. But with almost unheard success for a new painter, Joe’s show was a virtual sell-out. Speaking about his first shared exhibition last year, Joe said, “I had really expected that I would just be displaying my work for the duration of the exhibition, as most new artists will tell you, it can take time to establish yourself in the market. However as each day passed, more and more red ‘sold’ stickers went on my work until almost every piece had been purchased. I could hardly believe it; I had always been advised that this would not happen! That then gave me the impetus to produce new works, and I knew that I wanted to make sure that my first solo exhibition was in my home town of Nottingham.” Joe’s training was at Derby University where he achieved an outstanding BA first class honours degree in Fine Art and he has recently won a commission to paint a mural at Kingsway Hospital in Derby. His work juxtaposes industrial architecture against nature and he cites his influences as Francis Bacon and Turner.

Thank You!
The 21st Birthday Show of the Grand Central Chorus on the 10th March was a great success. Thank you to all that came and made it so. The Derby Theatre was full of enthusiastic show goers. ‘We’ve never had such a big house for a show like this’ said one of the box office clerks. ‘A brilliant show, ten out of ten for entertainment,’ said an audience member. The Chorus were delighted that all the effort had been worthwhile. Ten new men have joined recently and seven of them were singing in the show. ‘It was a wonderful experience’ said new member George Mackie ‘ I’ve sung and played guitar for years but performing with the Chorus has added a new dimension to my singing pleasure.’ By the time you read this the chorus will have performed at St. Johns Church in Long Eaton and will be continuing their preparation for the National Convention at Southport on the 26th May. They are hoping to improve on the bronze medal they were awarded in 2011. The Chorus rehearse every Wednesday at 7.15pm in Harrington School, Derby Road, Long Eaton, NG10 4BJ. Any men interested in singing contact Martin on 07855270803. Contact Peter on 01530 243822 if you are seeking entertainment for an event. A group of four to a full chorus can be supplied. Fees are negotiable. See the website www.grandcentralchorus.com for further information or e-mail publicity.gcc@gmail. com

Residents across the borough are being asked to lend the council souvenirs for the duration of the exhibition, or bring them on the day itself. Notts Guided Walks Are Back Again!!
Local Riders Take on 1000 Mile Challenge for Charity
The Notts Guided Walks Partnership is pleased to announce that sufficient funding this year has enabled the publication of their 2012 Guided Walks booklet and web-site www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk. Thanks to our volunteer leaders and groups, this is the largest compilation of walks the Partnership has produced so far. Copies of the 52-page free booklet will be available at libraries, country parks, information and leisure centres containing 129 guided walks in Nottinghamshire right through to the end of the year. Most of the walks are free and led by experienced walkers from the Ramblers and other local walking or wild-life groups. The web-site is now online. A new feature this year is a “Walking Festival” for the week Sunday 3rd to 10th June. During this week, 17 walks have been specially planned to encourage even more individuals and families to take to the countryside during possibly the best month of the year. The Festival will be supported by Radio Nottingham - indeed, one of the walks will be led by John Holmes. Another will be led by Paddy Tipping, ex-MP and Notts Area Ramblers’ President. It’s your chance to enjoy some healthy activity at little cost - and make new friends too. Six of these walks can be reached by public transport. For those not yet ready for several miles of effort, there are many pages of Health Walks included in both booklet and web-site, led by experienced leaders who are trained for the job. If you’re trying to regain fitness after a period of illness, have a look at what’s there to help you in your area. It may introduce you to a new group of friends. Happy walking!

A group of local cyclists are taking on the ultimate cycling challenge - riding from John O’Groats to Lands End. This gruelling 1000 mile trip is to raise money for The Meningitis Research Foundation. The ten riders are leaving Nottingham from Beeston Hockey Club on the 19th July and will start the ride on 21st July. They hope to complete the journey by 31st July. The riders include Robert Proctor who contracted meningitis as a child and is partially deaf as a result. The others making the trip are Steve Musson, George Kilpatrick, Paul Neal, Nick Parr, Ben Meakin, Owen Robinson, Dan Smith, Pete Shuttleworth and Will Proctor. There will be 6 support crew following the riders using a bus donated by Trent College. If you would like to donate to this worthy cause and support these guys with their challenge simply go to:

Robert Mellors School Design Sensory Bed Pupils form Robert Mellors Junior School visited Arnot hill Park leading up to Easter to take part in activities of a sensory nature to help them to design a flower bed within the park.
Once the final design has been submitted for the pupil’s final approval they will return to Arnot Hill Park to plant the bed with the help of the rangers who have worked with the children to produce the final design.
Organised by the Greenwood Community Forest Team for partners Gedling Borough Council, activities included using sight, smell and touch to develop plans. The final design ideas included wind chimes and speaking flowers as well as plants such as vibrantly coloured dogwood, furry “Lamb’s ears” and the delightfully named Chocolate Daisy.
Gill Grievson, Greenwood Conservation Project Officer, said: “This was a really in depth project that made the children think hard about what they would like to include. They came up with some good ideas of their own, and seeing the plants being grown at the nursery really helped them to visualise the end result.”
Previously the children had also visited Rufford Country Park and Old Hall Nurseries to come up with ideas of the type of plants and other sensory objects to include in the bed. The year 4 pupil’s visit to Rufford helped them to understand and touch different types of sculpture to help with planning the bed.
