KILLER FILLERS
In a previous life I used to own a sandwich bar and we always made all our sandwich fillings from scratch. Here are some of the best sellers. These would make great fillers for jacket spuds, cobs, wraps, salad bowls and of course sandwiches.
Coronation Chicken
1 chicken small onion - finely chopped 1tsp garam masala 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander 1 tsp turmeric 2 tbsp tomato puree 5 tbsp red wine 1 lemon - rind & juice 2 tbsp apricot jam ¾ pint mayo
Poach the chicken. Once cooked & cooled strip meat from bones. Gently fry the onion in some oil. When soft add all the spices and tom puree. Cook for 1 minute. Add the wine, lemon rind & juice. Cook for 5 mins. Add the jam and leave to cool. When cool - strain and then mix with the mayo and pour over the chicken. Mushroom Paté
Corned Beef Crunch
200g tin corned beef ½ red pepper - diced 2” cucumber - diced 1 stick celery - diced ¼ red onion - diced 2 tbsp mayonnaise 1 tsp horseradish sauce black pepper
Mash the corned beef up with a fork. Mix with all the vegetables. Mix the mayo & horseradish and stir into the mix. Season to taste. The crunch mix works well with tuna, cheese and cream cheese.
200g mushrooms - sliced 1 small onion - chopped 15g butter 1 tbsp olive oil 1 clove garlic - chopped small bunch parsley 1 tbsp sherry 200g cream cheese grated nutmeg, salt & pepper, lemon juice
Melt butter & oil in pan. Cook onion & garlic gently til soft. Add mushrooms & cook for 5 mins. Add sherry & boil rapidly until all liquid gone. Cool the mixture then add to a food processor with the parsley, seasoning & cream cheese. Whizz to desired consistency. Place in serving dish & refridgerate for 2 hours.

Drayton Manor Park has always been a family favourite of mine and with fond childhood memories of the rides and the zoo there, when we were asked to review the park for the magazines I jumped at the chance. Now with four children of my own ranging from 3-15 years and even Grandad joining us for the day, I was excited to be visiting the park again. It had everything for a great day out with Thomas Land for the littlies and the big rides for the older two but surprisingly there were a number of rides we could all enjoy together, including the Flying Dutchman, Drunken Barrels, Wild West Shoot Out, Buffalo Coaster and the Big Wheel. So if you go as a family don’t forget to check these out as well as the zoo and reptile house. As with all theme parks there are height restrictions on some of the rides, for more information visit their website, which is also the best place to buy your tickets as they are cheaper bought online before you go. DINING OUT – THE BENTINCK HOTEL
N
ottingham has a lot to offer. Many visitors from the UK and globally enjoy the city, which boasts excellent entertainment venues, including the Royal Centre and Capital FM Arena. Retail therapy is another major attraction, for visitors to Nottingham. Fashion (many designer), independents and high street names satisfy today’s requirements, very well indeed. The Council House, with its 200ft high dome, overlooks the Old Market Square. Nottingham Castle, the caves, Robin Hood, Nottingham Forest and Notts County Football Clubs, plus Trent Bridge cricket events, draw many people to Nottingham, every year. Perhaps a boat trip on the River Trent appeals or a visit to the National Water Sports Centre, at nearby Holme Pierrepont. Nottingham is home to the National Ice Centre, too. Ye Olde Trip To Jerusalem, reputed to be the country’s oldest inn, is a popular venue amongst many very interesting properties, in and around Nottingham. The Bentinck Hotel, Bar and Brasserie, is in a perfect location, next to Nottingham’s rail and tram stations. Following a £1.5m restoration and refurbishment, this Grade II listed building offers luxury bedrooms, which have retained many beautiful, original features and also enjoy views of Nottingham Castle, as well as having the technology requirements, for today’s living needs. The restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch and dinner, to both residents and non-residents. The menus utilise many ingredients and produce from the Nottinghamshire area. Healthy and hearty breakfasts satisfy all tastes. Lunch and dinner menus can include popular starters of Smoked Salmon & Prawn Salad
WIN A MEAL FOR TWO UP TO THE VALUE OF £50!
Just answer the following question: How much did the Bentinck restoration cost?

and Seafood Risotto. Mains have Sirloin Steak served with king prawns, peppercorn or blue cheese sauce. Chicken Milanese is served with spicy tomato sauce and olives. These are favourite choices for many diners. Main courses are plentiful and come complete. Black Cherry Cheesecake is amongst desserts available. The ‘Express Menu’ has Croque Madame, Minute Steak and Season Risotto, amongst ample choices, if time is a limiting factor.
Hotel guests enjoy a discount in the Brasserie, which also stocks a very good range of wines/drinks. Booking is advisable, particularly during busy periods. pets Join - and make a real difference to local animals Readers are invited to make a real difference to local, vulnerable animals by joining a local ‘lifeline’ animal charity. Nottingham based Animal Accident Rescue Unit provides a literal lifeline to injured, abandoned and neglected domestic animals plus wildlife. Its work is only made possible from a mixture of donations: financial from kind members of the public - and time from its volunteers. For a modest annual subscription, membership of this small charity is potentially the best way to help it continue - and brings with it benefits such as newsletters. Whether for yourself or as a present for another, this gift ‘keeps on giving’. Alternatively, weekly or monthly payments, direct from a bank account or by cheque can be arranged. Yearly membership is currently OAP/student/unwaged at £3.50, single at £7 or family at £10 – whilst tax can be reclaimed on Gift Aid status donations. As one volunteer explains on costs: ‘If, for example, existing members gave just £1 a week, this would buy a year’s supply of insulin and needles for a diabetic cat, or microchips for fostered animals.’ As a registered charity, donators can be assured that every donation goes where it should; helping dogs like Ellie (pictured) who readers may recall was found in an appalling state … but thanks to the charity’s supporters was rehomed to a lovely home. To join or donate to help Animal Accident Rescue Unit’s work, visit www.aaru.org.uk to join securely online using Paypal, email admin@aaru.org.uk, call 0115-932 1555 or write to Animal Accident Rescue Unit, PO Box 5414, Nottingham NG14 5DT for a membership form.

Spring Skin Blues Why can I not get rid of the fleas on my cat, even though I am treating him? The main reason flea control is not working is either you are not using an effective treatment, you are not using it frequently enough or you are not controlling reinfection from eggs left in the cat's local environment. Flea treatment should be carried out all the year round, it is important that you also treat carpets etc for flea eggs & larvae and that you treat all cats, dogs and even rabbits living in the house. Always get advice from your veterinary surgeon or pharmacist who should be able to provide you with the most effective treatments.
Why is my dog itchy in Summer? He may be licking his feet, scratching his ears, his skin may be red and hot and he may be losing hair from his coat. The most common cause of itching is ECZEMA or allergic dermatitis. This is a very common problem especially in Summer. Eczema is due to an allergic reaction to things in the environment such as Fleas, Tree & Grass Pollens. If your dog shows some or all of these signs then it is best if he is taken to the vet who will try to assess the problem and prescribe relevant treatments, these often include flea control, medicated shampoo and tablets to combat itches and infections. © Andrew Draper, Senior Vet, Oak House Veterinary Centre

Nottingham & District Pre-Retirement Group Celebrate Their 47th Anniversary
A Club with Ambition...
A charity in the East Midlands is celebrating its 47th Anniversary. They help people who are approaching retirement by providing seminars which cover finance, health, legal advice, safety, security, income tax, consumer rights, volunteering, pensions, benefits and how to occupy leisure time. There are many important changes in legislation which will affect State Retirement Pension date/ages and full details will be explained in the seminars. This will be particularly pertinent in relation to the Flat Rate State Pension which will start in April 2016. The recent budget proposals will also be explained in full during the sessions. During the course, each delegate receives a Resource Pack and a 1:1 with each speaker to discuss any personal queries. The Course Leader (always a retired person) is in attendance for the whole of the time and can give first hand experience and help. The 3 Day Seminars are held each month and a charge is raised to cover the admin. costs. It is recommended that people attend within 3 years of retirement so that they can plan ahead. The next Seminar is to be held on 23rd, 24th, 25th June and places must be booked in advance as lunch is included. All the dates for 2014 are on the website. Full details at www. ndprc.org.uk or ring the office for an Information Pack. Tel: 0115 922 3824. Bookings can be made on-line for Pre-Retirement or Mid-Life Seminars. For NHS Staff, special courses are held 3 times a year in March, July and October. A Nomination form will need to be completed to book a place on these courses.

The UK economy is forecast to grow this year with most predictions running well above 2%. As the employment market becomes increasingly fluid the opportunity for interview becomes much more likely. There are many things that can be done to maximise the potential for success when connecting with a possible employer. In any situation preparation is key as the lack of it can seriously inhibit self-confidence. Before any type of interview give yourself plenty of time to • Research the role and the organisation – think about how your experience and skills fit the job and company ethos • Anticipate the questions you may be asked – prepare answers • Find out how the interview will be conducted e.g. single, panel, group Many employers will screen candidates by telephone initially. When preparing for this type of interview it’s important to consider: • Your tone of voice – be enthusiastic and use positive language • Battery life – charge your mobile fully before the interview • Location – find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed At a face to face interview it’s imperative that you stand out from the crowd for all the right reasons by ensuring: • You arrive on time or better still, early • You are organised. Take along your application, CV and examples of work ( if appropriate)with you • You listen carefully to the questions and answer concisely • Your body language is confident and outgoing. It’s a proven fact that non-verbal communication is an important factor when considering applicants • You have practised the points that you want to get across. Build your confidence by hearing yourself speak before the actual meeting Time and time again we encounter candidates who have represented themselves poorly at interview because they did not get the basics Arnold Local History Group right before attending. It is imperative that We aim to encourage and support an interest you in the history of the Arnold area and help • Plan the day of the interview, especially the conserve and archive material of local interest journey. Take cash in case you need to take a taxi or bus unexpectedly, carry an A-Z map During the next few months we will be or put the destination postcode into Google taking part in a number of events: maps on your mobile to prevent getting lost Arnold Carnival | Gedling Show • Decide beforehand what to wear and set Nottingham History Fair | Gedling Book it out the night before – clean and pressed. Fair | WW1 Events in October Suits and business wear are the best option History Walks in June & October with clean, polished shoes Local History Courses begin again in September. • Get an early night – it makes sense! If you are interested in the history of the area please For further advice or help with your come along and see us at these events. You would recruitment needs please contact me direct be also be most welcome at our meetings. Will you be thriving or surviving this year? Lacking Self Belief‌? Worn down with other problems or issues‌?
Sometimes problems come and go. If we have strong personal foundations, and are resourced enough, we are more likely to move on quickly. If we are lacking self-esteem or, we are dogged by unhappy experiences and limiting beliefs perhaps from childhood experiences - we may not thrive so easily.

New Skate Park Opens in July King George V Park in Arnold will soon be home to a new £110,000 skate park which will complete the recent major refurbishment of the park and facilities. This is the last phase of works at the park on Hallams Lane. The park has undergone a major £350,000 refurbishment, which has included new children’s play area, outdoor gym equipment, footpaths, football pitch, park furniture and soft landscaping. When consultation began, over 500 young people signed petitions asking to have a skate park. As well as being heavily involved in the implementation of the skate park, young people from the area also raised nearly £600 organising a skate jam in Arnot Hill Park and a fundraising visit to a local indoor skate park.
The project cost in the region of £110,000. £50,000 came from the Nottinghamshire County Council local improvement scheme, £5,000 from Gedling Homes, £48,500 from WREN through funds
donated by FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund, and £5,000 from Gedling Borough Council. Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said; “The new skate park is a great example of partnership working and also an example of young people getting involved in their local community. Not only were they heavily involved in the consultation but they also raised money to make sure they had the skate park they wanted and we’re sure they’ll enjoy it for many years to come.” Cheryl Raynor, Nottinghamshire Grant Manager of WREN, said; “WREN makes a difference to people’s lives by awarding grants to community, environmental and heritage project across the UK. We’re delighted to support Gedling Borough Council and hope the skate park will be a valuable resource for local children.”

Ella’s Teen Talk:
Handling Friends
They say that you can’t choose your family, but what about your second family? What about the family that you spend every ‘working’ day of Ella Higginbotham aged 16 the week with? This family can definitely be your own personal pick and for lots of us it takes many years to perfect; swapping and changing friendship groups in primary school and ending up with a new best friend every day. However in our teenage years we seem to have grown out of this and we all have friends that are there to stay- our second family. I am lucky enough to have found a group that are as wacky as me. You can’t have friends that don’t understand your weird ways (and you of course have to trust them to not tell everyone else these weird ways!). I see some friendship groups that constantly argue over silly things and it’s impossible to keep up with who is friends with who or who took who’s side- it must be exhausting! If you can’t stick with your friends for longer than a week without some sort of dispute then maybe they aren’t your ‘best friends for life’ after all. With the stress of school and families that some teens have to live with, a solid friendship group is needed for that support and release when you just need a laugh! In secondary schools, everyone always pictures the stereotypical friendship divide: the nerds, the jocks, the popular group. But is that realistic? Are we living in ‘Mean Girls’? Maybe to some extent but in the big picture, we are all just sleepy teenagers that turn up to school and complain together about being there. The biggest stereotypical problem is that you can barely walk down the corridor with a member of the opposite sex without being attacked with wolf whistles and questions about if you are a new couple. Sure, some people tease, but really, after five years in school, they should have realised that you Next are not a new couple and just friends! Basically, friends can torment you sometimes but that’s what they’re there for! Imagine how boring life would be if everyone was serious the whole time; that doesn’t appeal to me! If you can’t have a laugh with and get support from your friends then what is the point?!

Swimming News...
ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS
Nottinghamshire ASA County Championships 2014
Well done to all the swimmers who represented Arnold Swimming Club in the Notts ASA 2014 BAGCAT’s (British Age Group Categories) Championships. Congratulations to Thomas White, Grace Perry and Henry Osborne who gained an amazing 10 club records between them. These three swimmers and Ellie Blakey also finished in the top 10 overall in their respective age group. Our other swimmers who took part in the Championships were Jack Bannister, Andrew Tsolakis, Maisie Chung, Hannah Davies, Samuel Williams, Robyn Galloway, Aimee Glendenning, Emily Keen, Maddison Mason, Joshua Merrifield, Grace Forward, Ben Cuthill, Samuel King, Eloise Towsey, Keira Winter, Latrell Wynter, James Simpson, Albie Stapleton, James Dwyer, Gabriel Hutton, Morgan Green and Georgia Bramley. Well done to all of you.
Senior Captains, Vice-Captains & Junior Captains 2014 - 15
Further to the Annual General Meeting, Arnold Swimming Club are delighted to announce the appointments of Harry Martin and Natalie Bacon as Senior Club Captains, Philip Isherwood and Hannah Drewett as Senior Vice Captains and Sam Williams and Robyn Galloway as Junior Club Captains.
Presidency at Arnold Swimming Club
Bill Hammond decided to step down from his role as President of Arnold SC at this year’s AGM and we wanted to take the opportunity to tell you a bit about him and his work for the club. Bill is a life-member of Arnold swimming club and has been associated with the Club for over 60 years. He joined the Club at the age of 8 and represented the Club in swimming competitions in the 1950’s before going on to coach swimmers poolside for 17 years including his two children (Jonathon and Andrew, both now in their 40’s). As well as holding discos, picnics and bonfire parties at his farm, Bill also took many swimmers to galas in the back of his Land Rover (Health and Safety wouldn’t allow this now!). Bill was also an active member on the Committee being Chairman for 5 years before becoming President of Arnold SC and has always been a regular at our Annual galas and presentation evenings. Whilst Bill has taken the decision to stand down as President of Arnold SC, he will still be a regular visitor to the Club when he takes his granddaughter, Daisy to training. We would like to thank Bill for his contribution to the club in the many different roles he has held over the years. The Committee are also pleased and honoured to announce that Bill Hopkins has accepted the role of President of Arnold SC. Pictured is Dave Palmer being presented with the Coach of the year 2013 award by Bill Hopkins (left) and Bill Hammond (right).

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... Cyclists; love them or hate them you can’t deny that they are everywhere at the moment. Whether or not you like taking to the road on two wheels, you can probably appreciate that having a car crawling behind you while waiting to pass is just as frustrating for the cyclist as it is for the driver. And as the weather perks up, you can guarantee that more and more people will be taking their bike out for a ride. So please, whether you are behind a wheel or at the handle bars, let’s all be patient and considerate on the roads and don’t forget those helmets. But it’s not just your own safety that you need to be mindful of, take a moment to think about the security of your bike otherwise you could be facing a long walk home. Most bike owners do the right thing by securing their cycles to allocated posts. The problem is the chains that are often used are very easy to cut. Putting a £5 padlock or chain on a £1,000 bike is a bit like closing your front door but leaving it unlocked. It isn’t enough to stop criminals. Take pride in your ride. Lock
up your bike if you leave it, no matter how short your stop, and always park where it can be seen clearly. D-locks are stronger than cable locks or chains as they are a solid metal and very difficult to cut through. Make sure the lock is tight so that your bike is difficult to move around, twist or lever when it is parked. Never lock your bike to something that is weaker than your lock and never leave the lock lying on the ground where it could be smashed easily. Mark your bike’s frame via Bike Register or with Selectamark or CreMark. Always keep a record of the frame/serial number and take photos of your bike, including details such as the make, model, frame size, colour and any other unique markings that could help us find it. Register those details at www. immobilise.com or www. bikeregister.com as this will help us get your bike back to you if it is stolen and later recovered. Report suspicious or unusual activity around bikes to police on 101 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 with any information.

Christ the King student wins county Young Coach of the Year Rio Henley, Year 13 at Christ the King Catholic Voluntary Academy in Arnold, was nominated for the Gedling Area Awards last November by her PE teacher Mr Riding who attended the awards and was very proud to see her pick up the title and award for Junior Coach of the Year. This in turn led to being shortlisted for the County awards held at the East Midlands Conference Centre in January where we are very proud to announce Rio once again was recognised for the outstanding attitude and dedication she shows to her coaching and won the title of Nottinghamshire Young Coach of the Year. Rio coaches the disability sport Boccia working with the Boccia England Talent Squad and The Lion Squad. She has also been recognised by the sport’s national governing body Boccia England as their young coach of the year. They describe Rio’s manner as “Outstanding - she takes the initiative and gets stuck in!” Locally, Rio is the lead coach at Nottinghamshire’s Boccia Club Rainworth and Head coach at Rushcliffe Boccia Club. The youth sport trust also utilised Rio’s talents last year and asked her to become a mentor for national young coaches at Loughborough University a role she thoroughly enjoyed. Earlier this year Rio was involved in the skills testing for Paralympics GB. Rio hopes to continue to develop as a coach through Buxton University later this year. We wish her well and look out for her name in the next Paralympics!

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Summer 2014 The Nottingham Centre (supporters of National Trust) has enjoyed a very successful twelve months under the excellent leadership of Sylvia Hale, who took over as chairman last year. This year’s summer excursions got off to a good start with a visit to the Macclesfield Silk Museums, and Cuckoo Clock Museum. This was followed by a trip to Iron Bridge Gorge museums in May. In June, members are looking forward to a day in Lincolnshire, visiting Alford Manor House, reputedly the largest thatched manor house in England. After lunch the party moves on to Gunby Hall. There are no booked tours here so visitors are free to explore the lovely gardens at leisure. Keen walkers can also enjoy an organised ‘TV’ walk through Lyme Park in the Peak District. Then in August a three day walking holiday is planned. The thriving Garden Interest Group will visit Doddington Hall Gardens, near Lincoln, Park Farm, Southwell, and Penarth Gardens, Sherwood, a beautiful garden found in the unlikely setting of the old Nottingham Brickwork quarry. The Nottingham Centre is affiliated to National Trust and takes pleasure in contributing financially to NT properties in need. Over the past year donations have been given to several properties, including Belton House, Croome Park, Rufford Old Hall, and Stoneywell, a beautiful ‘Arts and Crafts’ house in Leicestershire, a recent acquisition. The cost to join the Nottingham Centre is £6.00 for individual membership, £10.00 per couple, but it is necessary to be a member of National Trust to join. It is a friendly organisation offering something for everyone. In winter meetings are held at The Mechanics, North Sherwood Street, Nottingham. For more information contact the membership Secretary, Heather Brooks, Tel: 0115 943 6272, (mobile/weekends: 07867563885) email:heatherbro@aol.com www.nottinghamnt.co.uk

Smashing the Frames by Bob Massey During the latter part of the 18th Century, framework knitting had become the main industry in the Nottingham area, especially in Arnold. Over ž of the population were employed one way or another in the production of stockings.
On March 11th 1811, a large crowd of framework knitters assembled in Nottingham market place and after a number of very angry speeches the crowd dispersed and began moving up Mansfield Road toward Arnold.
Framework knitting had started as a side line for the agricultural community to earn money especially during the winter months. The frames they used were rented to them by hosiers who also provided the materials all at a cost to the workers. Framework knitting was a skilled trade and workers had to serve a seven year apprenticeship. The Napoleonic war produced a great demand for cheap hosiery for the troops but the war also produced huge shortages in raw materials. These shortages affected the poorest workers most of all.
Arriving in Arnold, they entered the premises of hosiers who had “rendered themselves the most obnoxious to the workmen and destroyed a total of 63 stocking frames. No other damage was done and no violence was reported.
In order to produce cheaper products some hosiers introduced wide frames that could be operated by semi skilled labour known as colts. They also reduced the wages paid to all employees. The framework knitters still had to pay to hire the frames and received a fine if they did not produce stockings even if the hosiers did not provide the raw materials. These changes to the industry combined to produce great poverty amongst the knitters. The time-served knitters were worried about a decline in the quality of the hosiery and saw it as a threat to their skill and craftsmanship. The knitters decided to take action. After an appeal to Parliament failed, they decided to take direct action against those hosiers who employed colts.
A report on 15th March in the Nottingham Journal named a hosier, or ex-hosier, Bolton, as the man who had particularly suffered from the attacks. Bolton had written to the Journal in January of that year to state that his frames were rented to Brocksopp and Parker, and warned anyone against frame-breaking. The legal limitations on the Nottingham authorities prevented an effective response to the events of Arnold in March. The Nottingham City authorities simply had no remit to stray over the Nottinghamshire County borders without obtaining permission from the Home Office - obviously impossible at such short notice. This attack became known as the start of the Luddite movement. Over the next six years the attacks became worse and the authorities became more and more concerned. Over 200 frames were destroyed in Arnold alone. The local militia were called into the affected areas and at one point there were more soldiers involved in the fight against the Luddites than there were on the continent fighting Napoleon. Eventually a combination of Parliament, fashion and world events conspired to improve the framework knitters status and pay and the industry continued through the 19th Century.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine. www.arnold-history-group.org

Controversy at Gedling Country Park by Brian Cluff With some months to go before its official opening in the autumn, there is already considerable disquiet and controversy over the Borough Council’s landscaping of the former colliery site. Phase One of the work to turn it into a country park has demanded some widening and firming of paths to improve safety and ease of access. However walkers are finding the whole site criss-crossed with 3-metre wide unsightly roadways instead of the grassy footpaths that were a much-loved feature of the area, with many of the new trees destroyed in the process. It is difficult to reconcile such intrusive and destructive changes to the land with the Council’s declared intention of keeping it as a cherished nature reserve. Feelings are running high. Many local residents familiar with the site have agreed to serve on a ‘Friends of Gedling Country Park’ group, but even before the first meeting in April, several had already disassociated themselves from the group in protest at the insensitive nature of the changes. They believe that the Park deserves a much lighter touch that not only respects the wildlife that has populated the area since the pit’s closure, but more closely reflects the attitude of nature-lovers and walkers who want to feel part of that environment. They want to see the wild deer, stoats, hares, foxes and bats, the birds (both common and rare immigrants) and the wealth of wild flowers that have blossomed there as nowhere else. But not from wide roadways that look like an inviting race-track to cardrivers and motor-cyclists, some of whom have already used it and put walkers in danger. This Park could have been preserved as an attractive Nottinghamshire asset, managed with a light touch to preserve its distinctive qualities and allow residents to enjoy it under carefully managed conditions. The Council’s decision to make this an ordinary country park, with wide lanes and a children’s playground, lacks vision. It is a lost opportunity to make it something far more worthy of Gedling’s and Nottinghamshire’s residents. If you want to contact Gedling Borough Council about this telephone 0115 901 3901 or email: parks@ gedling.gov.uk Councillor Peter Barnes, portfolio holder for environment said: “The park has been designed to make it accessible to as many groups of different people as possible, we’re particularly keen to create disabled access to the park and access to those with mobility difficulties and the wider paths makes this possible. “There is still plenty of landscaping to be done which will affect how the pathways look, including tree planting and the installation of verges along the paths. We’re also conducting extensive surveys over the summer which will outline our wildlife conservation programme for the park. “This site is at a very early development stage and we welcome comments from local residents, over forty people have joined the Friends of group and whilst we appreciate that we cannot meet everyone’s expectations, we’re working very closely with residents and our colleagues at Nottinghamshire County Council to ensure that this park is a place all local residents can enjoy.”

Help Wanted to Put Notts Brownies in the Picture Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is looking for help to build a library of pictures covering 100 years of Brownies across the county. This year marks the centenary of the formation of Brownies, which is the section of Girlguiding specifically for girls aged 7-10. Activities to mark the milestone are taking place all over the UK and one of the projects here in Nottinghamshire is to compile a digital photo-album showing Brownies in action over the decades. The pictures will also be used to support news stories about the Brownies’ celebrations, and the best ones will be sent to ITV Central News for a feature later in the year. ‘We’re asking people to scour their attics and old photograph albums to find archive pictures of local Brownies and their leaders,’ says Aspley Guide Leader Kayleigh Hunt, who is managing the project for Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. ‘The pictures should be scanned and sent to us by e-mail, accompanied by brief details as to who’s in the picture and when or where it was taken. The images will be added into our Big Brownie Photo-Album, creating a unique record of Brownies in Notts.’ K a y l e i g h stresses that she is not asking for treasured original photographs to be sent in. ‘We need digital files only, preferably jpgs,’ she says. ‘But anyone without access to a scanner is welcome to get in touch and I’ll do my best to help get their pictures added to our album!’ Images and queries should go to Kayleigh Hunt at pr@girlguidingnottinghamshire.org. uk

Foundation Unit runners up in National Award Robert Mellors Foundation Stage Unit recently came runners up in the national Communication Friendly Spaces Awards. The school have been working hard since September to set up the new Unit for 3-5 year olds, with new wooden furniture and cozy spaces. Their approach is based on research showing that children learn best when their environment is not over stimulating. Neutral colours were used rather than bright displays and visual clutter was reduced. Robert Mellors are working with Nottingham Trent University to research how the environment for children impacts on their speech, language and communication development. The school also have close links with the local Sure Start Children's Centre to work together to make sure children get the best start to their lives. The team are delighted to be considered for the award and will continue in making Robert Mellors an outstanding school.

Two council car parks are now open to the public in Arnold and as part of the launch there will be free all day parking at both until July. The car parks, which will have over 100 spaces between them, are on the sites of the former Druid’s Tavern pub and on Croft Road. The Druid’s car park is a brand new car park and has 74 spaces with four disabled bays, four secure cycle lockers and two electric vehicle charging points. Croft Road, which is being reopened following the completion of the new health centre, will have 47 car parking spaces with three disabled bays and suitable access for Motability users. The Druid’s Tavern car park was developed with funding from the Department of Communities Growth Point Funding and Gedling Borough Council. Both cark parks will have free all day parking until July and then after that they will be free for the first two hours in line with other parking arrangements in the area. Councillor John Clarke, Leader of the Council said; “The opening of these two car parks will be a great boost to the local economy and local businesses. By offering free all day parking between now and July we hope that local residents will use the facilities and help support local businesses. The electric vehicle charging points at the Druid’s car park are also an example of the council delivering on its promise to develop our sustainability plans and provide better access to renewable energy in the borough.”

MUSICAL roundup
If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.
Introducing Carlton Brass.. Our roots date back to the old Netherfield Railwayman’s Silver Band formed in 1902 at the Colwick Locomotive Depot, part of the Great Northern Railway. Carlton Band Organisation now consists of two sister bands Carlton Brass (Nottingham) 2nd Section Band, and Carlton Brass Training Band. Both bands attend a wide range of events from contests to weddings and Christmas Carols. Carlton Training Band have just started sending out their requirement squad to local schools, providing an interactive assembly and getting children interested in their local brass band. With having the two sister bands we cater for a wide range of abilities and age groups ranging from 8 to the over 50s. You are never too old to learn a new skill! If you fancy giving it a go for further information please contact:

Music for Everyone gets Sherwood singing! Nottingham based music education charity, Music for Everyone, is recruiting for singers to join their daytime choir in Sherwood. Especially designed for singers of all abilities and experience, the choir rehearse on a Thursday afternoon from 2pm - 4pm at Sherwood Methodist Church. So is Music for Everyone’s aim to get everyone in Nottingham Singing? Angela Kay of Newark, founder and Artistic Director of Music for Everyone for the past 30 years exclaimed “Let's hope so, we started with just one group in 1983 and now we have numerous choirs and other ensembles rehearsing and performing all over the city and county, so who knows!” Anyone interested in joining Daytime Voices can try out a session for free on Thursday 12 June at Sherwood Methodist Church (2pm - 4pm). For more information contact Music for Everyone on 0115 9589312 email admin@music-for-everyone.org or visit their website www.music-for-everyone.org
Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir – 93 years old and still going strong!
Founded in 1920, ECMVC is still very much alive and kicking all these years later. ECMVC is not only very proud of its history but continues to innovate and promote the very best of male voice singing as it performs for local groups and audiences, hosts visiting choirs and joins others as guests elsewhere. In 2008, ECMVC took a bold idea and turned it into reality. What about inviting a few other local choirs to join in and raise some much needed funds for charity? Sounds Sensational was born and has raised thousands of pounds for charity over the years. As important as these events are, the choir have at their heart the need to promote the enjoyment of singing whilst performing on their own for local organisations. For the very latest news and concert details, please visit the choir’s website – www. ecmvc.org.
