Dear Readers This month Abby aka The Fishwife’s Kitchen has given us some fabulous recipes that include ingredients that can be found growing wild. With summer well and truly on the way we love a good evening walk in the sunshine. Now we will be keeping our eyes peeled for wild garlic, elderflowers and nettles so we can make these delicious recipes. We all love a good holiday - whether it’s a staycation or the trip of a lifetime. Reading Ella’s History page really made us appreciate how lucky we are, with the choices we have these days. Wherever you go and whatever you do - ENJOY!! Happy Reading Ali, Cat, Sarah & Francine

Heat Stroke In Dogs And Other Pets Andrew Draper from Oak House Veterinary Centre talks about looking after your pets during the summer.
controlled using intravenous fluids, nursing and drugs, especially if we can see the patient soon enough.
Late spring and early summer is a time when we often see cases of heat stroke and related problems such as heart failure or respiratory distress. This is due to owners being caught out by the variable weather and suddenly having a hot day out of the blue. We especially see problems with dogs kept in cars or in conservatories, where the environment magnifies the problem.
Prevention is always the best way to keep your pets safe and involves awareness from owners, never leaving pets in cars or behind glass when the temperature is very hot, always providing water, a shady spot and some ventilation for your pet. If you think they may be slightly overheating then use a water spray or wet cold towel to cool them down while providing a fan to help keep the air moving. Also never work/over exercise your dog in hot weather- where possible wait until dusk and dawn to go for your walks and playtime.
Dogs are especially susceptible to heat stroke as unlike humans they only sweat from their feet, to cool down they have to be able to pant and also be able to drink water. Signs of heat stroke can range from excessive breathlessness and listlessness through to full blown collapse and even death. Certain breeds and pets are mores susceptible and extra care should be taken with elderly, overweight, dogs with pre-existing heart problems or breeds with shorter noses such as Bulldogs, but remember any dog or other pet can be effected.
Always carry some water and a bowl with you if you are exercising in hot weather and try to keep to shady walks such as in the woods rather than open spaces. Enjoy the spring and summer but always be careful of heat stroke!
If you are concerned about heat stroke phone the vet immediately for advice and an emergency consultation, normally the hyperthermia can be

pets Ginny: Hoping For A Home – At Last! Introducing lovely Ginny – who is still waiting for a home a year after being rescued by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit.
WIN....
A PAIR OF TICKETS for the opening night performance on 3 Oct
Ginny has seen many friends rehomed, and now sadly feels ignored. At 6 years old, she is extremely affectionate and, despite her rough start and a resulting sensitive tummy, she loves smoked salmon! Like all the charity’s cats, Ginny was FIV/ FeLV-tested and is negative. She is spayed, flea and worm treated, micro-chipped, littertrained and vaccinated; her new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. The charity recommends cats are kept indoors for 6-8 weeks, for bonding with the new owner/home, and safely kept indoors at night. To find out more about gorgeous Ginny, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. The charity is volunteer-run, and needs more drivers and phone operators; to offer help contact Becky Campbell on 07522101619 or email admin@aaru.org.uk. To raise funds, there are monthly fairs full of bargains and refreshments; the next one is on Saturday 10 June 2-4pm, at Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www. animalaccident.org.uk.

Live & Let Pie PIE & MASH TAKE AWAY
There’s something a bit different going on in Arnold. An independent, family run Pie and Mash shop!
Delivery is an option too for a small extra charge, plus there is a small amount of seating inside if you’d rather eat in.
The owners, David and Sarah, with help from David’s daughter Paige, set this business up last December after working within industries that did not excite them. They decided to go for it and fulfil their passion for cooking and their long time ambition to open a pie shop.
We thought that these pies were better than homemade! No cooking! No washing up! Great value! Enjoyed by us adults and the kids alike. Basically, fresh home cooked food at your convenience! Definitely worth a try!
All pies are freshly baked on the premises daily with the best quality ingredients. We ordered steak and ale pie and chicken, ham and mushroom pie. The pies were loaded with chunky, tender meat and had a lovely crusty pastry. As a family meal deal, these came with creamy mash and a choice of mushy peas or garden peas and scrummy onion gravy. The meal deals are £15 for 2 adults and 2 children for pies and also for Sunday dinners. There is certainly plenty for everyone. Other flavour pies on offer are chicken balti, sweet potato and feta, and minced beef and onion. Also on the menu is slow cooked beef brisket chilli (including a vegetarian chilli), lamb shanks and faggots. There are daily specials to watch out for so keep your eye on their specials board or facebook page. The Sunday dinners to takeaway are proving popular with a choice of beef brisket, roast chicken or slow cooked pulled pork. To finish off your meal they do a classic apple pie and custard or an assortment of Ben & Jerry’s Ice cream.
David is keen to receive any feedback to help them improve the menu as they want to make sure they offer what their customers want. As well as a weekly competition, there are already lots of great comments on facebook. A good sign!! Their passion for their business is clear, their pies are lovely, so we wish them every success, they deserve it! Have a night off! Try a pie! You’ll find them across from the Greyhound Inn. Customers are welcome to park in the pub car park.

Have Your Fill From Nature’s Larder Foraging has, of course, been a part of the human eating experience from the beginning, but in modern times you are more likely to pop to your local supermarket or, if you’re feeling adventurous, to your local farmers’ market for your supply of veg, fruit and salad than you are to grab a bag and head into the woodlands and hedgerows. But in recent years the appetite for foraging has grown in strength, as people enjoy the authenticity of local, seasonal, usually indigenous and, of course, free, food. So in demand has foraged produce become, wild mushrooms in particular, that some places have banned people from picking for personal use altogether, as restaurants and markets have employed those in the know to hunt out the best sites or have turned a blind eye to their sources and picking has been on an almost industrial scale, spoiling the fun for the rest of us. But there is still much to be found in the English countryside, if you just take the time to look. The pièce de résistance of foraging for many is the amazing array of wild mushrooms and fungi that appear from late summer to late autumn. I used to go mushroom hunting a lot when I was younger, morels, chanterelles, field mushrooms and boletes, but I find as I’ve got older I have
become increasingly risk averse and am no longer prepared to take a chance on mistaking my innocuous field mushroom for the deadly similar Deathcap. Whilst there isn’t much to beat wild fungi on the flavour front, I strongly recommend you only gather them with a qualified expert at your side, or better still, pop to a local market and find the farmed versions. Even without mushrooms though, you’ll find a host of edible species in the fields, woods and hedgerows from early spring to late autumn, favourites such as elderflower and wild garlic, nettles, blackberries, sloes and rosehips and the less well known wild sorrel, mallow and fat hen - perfect for creating your own salads, cordials, jams, beers and soups, pretty much for free. There are rules though! Never pick or eat anything you are unsure of, if in doubt, leave well alone, only take from plentiful supplies and never dig up or remove any kind of plant, take only what you intend to eat and always seek permission from the landowner if you are on private land. You can find further advice from the Woodland Trust on-line. If you do fancy dipping into nature’s larder though, here are a few really simple recipes to get you started.
Abby Brennan is a former café-owner, food writer, speaker and small/start-up food-business mentor. You can find her blog at fishwifeskitchen.com
Wild Garlic and Nettle Soup (April/May)
Elderflower Cordial (June/July)
Bramble Jam (August/ September)
Play around with the recipe as you see fit, a dash of white wine and/ or double cream (at the end) make great additions. (Caution, unless you know you are gathering “dead nettles” with the white or purple flowers, make sure you wear gloves, the sting goes once the nettles are cooked but not before!)
Ingredients 2.5 kg white caster sugar 2 lemons (unwaxed or washed, zested and sliced) 20 fresh elderflower heads (trim off the stalks) 85g citric acid (most chemists sell this)
Ingredients 450g brambles (wild blackberries), rinsed well. 450g white granulated sugar (blackberries can be low in pectin so you might what to improve your chances of a good set by using “jam sugar” which has pectin added) Juice of 1 large lemon.
Ingredients (serves 4-6) 1 tbsp vegetable oil 25g butter 1 onion finely diced 1 leek, 1 celery stick & 1 carrot finely diced (the last optional) 1 small potato, peeled and diced Approx 1 ltr of good chicken or veg stock Roughly 300g young nettle leaves (washed) Roughly 200g wild garlic leaves (washed) 3 tbsp milk Method Heat oil & butter in a large pan, add onion & potato (& other veg if using) add a generous pinch of salt, stir well & allow to sweat for around 15 - 20 mins on a low heat. Add stock & simmer for 10 mins then add nettles (in batches) and garlic leaves. Simmer for a couple of minutes. Remove from the heat & blend using a stick blender. Return to the heat & add milk (or cream). Season to taste. You can also use the young wild garlic stems as a side dish, simply place in a pan with a tight fitting a lid, add a splash of water & a knob of butter & let the stems & leaves steam for a few minutes until wilted.
(makes about 4 litres)
Method Put sugar & 1.5 litres water into a large saucepan. Heat gently (without boiling) until all sugar is dissolved. Bring the pan to a boil then remove from the heat. Gently rinse the flowerheads in a washing-up bowl or bucket to remove any dirt & insects, shake off the excess water & add the flowers, lemon slices, zest & citric acid to the syrup. Stir well, cover & leave to infuse for 24 hrs. Line a colander with a clean tea-towel or piece of muslin & place over a large bowl, ladle in the syrup and allow to drip slowly through. Discard any bits and then use a funnel to fill freshly sterilised bottles. The cordial will keep for about 4 weeks in the fridge. Add to soda water or sparkling white wine for a refreshing summer drink.
(should make a couple of jars)
Method Put the brambles in a pan & add the lemon juice, simmer gently for around 15mins. When the fruit is cooked, add the sugar & cook over a low heat until the sugar has dissolved. Turn the heat up & bring to a boil, keep at a rolling boil, & keep stirring for around 15 minutes until setting point is reached. (Either a temp of 104.5C or when a spoonful of jam dropped on a freezing cold saucer wrinkles and sets when pushed with your finger). Fill your sterilised jars with the jam, seal & allow to cool before storing in the fridge.
Wildy Good by Cat Hedges
Welcoming isn't the word, this place is marvellous. The staff were great, the food delicious and the decor modern and inviting. The kids (6 & 8) were spoilt with paper chef's hats to colour, stickers and sweets on top of the usual kids menu to colour and crayons which kept them occupied and happy throughout the whole meal. Wildwood are a small collection of restaurants that serve freshly prepared food with a European theme. As the name might suggest they are very conscious of their social and environmental responsibilities with regards to the food they source, how their restaurants are run and the work they do in the local community. In fact they protect 1 acre of rain forest per year per restaurant, so right now they are protecting 19 acres!! We started our meal with Toasted Focaccia Bread (£3.95), ‘melt in the mouth’ Meatballs with tomato sauce and melted cheese (£5.65) and the Baked Mushrooms with melted gorgonzola cheese, spinach, walnuts and focaccia (£5.95) absolutely delicious. For mains the kids chose Breaded Chicken, Chips and Peas (£5.95 with a dessert) from the kids menu, with real chicken strips they went down a treat. My teenager decided on the Margherita Pizza (£7.75) which was absolutely amazing as it was cooked in a
proper pizza oven and reminded us of Italy. Brett had the Sirloin Steak (£15.95) which was cooked to perfection and served with a delicious peppercorn sauce. I went for the Wild Boar & Chorizo Burger(£11.65) with jalapenos and mayo, it was absolutely scrummy and a great twist on a classic. We were all suitably stuffed but couldn't resist the desserts! The kids had ice cream as part of the kids menu and were spoilt again with cones, sprinkles, sauce and marshmallows! Brett chose the Mixed Berry Crumble (£5.50) from the specials board which was delicious and being a chocoholic I had the Chocolate Honeycomb Fudgecake (£5.75) which was divine and I will definitely be returning but not just for that!

Nottingham BikeWorks Roles Out New C&G Bike Mechanic Courses N o t - f o r - p r o f i t organisation, Nottingham BikeWorks are delighted to roll out a new training provision from highly regarded training body, City and Guilds. Executive Director, Tom Barber was himself inspired to learn a new skill and take a career change; his love for bikes, resulted in him quitting his 9-5 and opting for a vocation of passion. “I’ve always cycled everywhere and been interested in bikes” says Tom. “So when the idea to start Nottingham BikeWorks gathered momentum it seemed too good an opportunity to miss.” Tom and co-founder Anthony Hopwood, had a clear desire to help disadvantaged children and adults in the local community learn new, practical and usable skills around bicycle repair and maintenance. These hands-on courses have gone from strength to strength since being rolled out in 2015, and the new City and Guilds offerings are another big step down this path. NBW offers 3 C&G courses: Entry Level 3 suitable for those with little or no experience; the more advanced Level 1; and finally Level 2. This 10 day course is a recognised professional, industry standard qualification. To ensure the centre could meet the standards of City and Guilds, Nottingham BikeWorks called upon neighbouring bicycle brand Raleigh, who helped to supply the workshop with 12 identical Raleigh Strada 3, specially selected for their reliability and quality. These bikes will be stripped down and rebuilt multiple times so NBW needed a bike that would stand the test of time. For more information on these City and Guild courses and others offered by Nottingham BikeWorks, please contact them 0115 979 2433; or email admin@nottinghambikeworks.org.uk; or visit their website nottinghambikeworks.org. uk.

The picture above shows President Lloyd with guest of honour, BBC East Midlands TV presenter, Anne Davies. Anne is a patron of FOREVER STARS and showed her skills throughout the evening becoming involved in the fund raising. Many club members worked hard at the event ably led by Neil Stevenson and incoming President Richard Shacklock to ensure all who attended enjoyed the event. 9 Things Not To Do At Interview Whilst there is lots of information out there regarding what to do at interview I thought I’d look at it from the opposite perspective. What are the things you probably shouldn’t do? Do Not... 1. Present your nerves: As a potential employee you need to present yourself as capable and confident. Interviewers are always aware that the situation is stressful for candidates but also expect those nerves to be under control. 2. Dominate the conversation: Some people are good listeners and others are good talkers. What we’re looking for at interview is the ability to do both. Again nerves can play a large part in personal presentation so take a deep breath and be calm. Don’t ever talk across the interviewer it will come across as rude. 3. Forget about fashion: When you’ve secured the job and can see for yourself what the everyday dress code is then you can react accordingly. For interview you need to project smart and professional in order to have a positive impact. An interview is never the right place to express your individuality. 4. Boast, even subtly: Appearing confident at an interview is necessary, but being over-confident could be a stumbling block. This can happen when candidates are referred by another employee or HR and they mistakenly assume that the job is theirs already and that interviewing is merely a formality. Mention your achievements with good grace not arrogance. 5. Criticize others: Never ever demean past connections. Don’t bad mouth about your former employer or workplace. It’s bad practice and will also flag up loyalty questions with the interviewer. 6. Start looking for perks: There’s a time and place to raise questions regarding holidays, sick leave or family emergencies. Your first interview is not the time or the place unless introduced as topics by the interviewer. Employers are not looking for candidates who ae focused on their holidays – they’re looking for candidates who are focused on doing the job well. 7. Refuse to commit: Don’t be flimsy in your responses – don’t forget that as much as you may want the opportunity it has to suit you too. Answer questions honestly and openly. 8. Be dishonest: Wasting your time and the interviewer’s by being dishonest is a really bad idea. Whilst presenting an excellent version of yourself at interview is necessary most interviewers are experienced enough to gauge quite quickly candidates who are not genuine or completely honest. 9. Fail to Prepare: Yes it might be your fifth interview in as many weeks but don’t ever neglect to do your research on a company before interview. There is so much information available on the internet that there’s simply no excuse for not finding out about the organisation and preparing some questions for the interviewer accordingly. Websites like LinkedIn and Glassdoor are a good source of background information. If you are applying for roles through an employment business such as SOLOS then your recruiter should also help you prepare for interview. Here at SOLOS we see candidates as extensions to our business and always aim to ensure they represent us well. © Helen Jones hjones@solosconsultants.co.uk

Pondhills Lane Community Centre Assett Transfer Pondhills Lane Community Centre is a former school, located on Pondhills Lane, Arnold, backing onto Calverton Road close to St Mary’s church. The Arts Wing is run by Gedling Borough Arts Association (GBAA). It is home to groups such as Arnold Arts Society, Arnold Camera Club, The Nottingham Guild of Magicians, The Prospect Players, Reason Academy of Dance. The community centre is available for hire for parties and functions. Arnold Arts Society regularly hold their Art Exhibitions here, and The Craft Group, White Tiger Kickboxing Academy and The Women’s Institute are regular users. What is Asset Transfer? Faced with continued budget reductions Gedling Borough Council has been exploring transferring centres such as Pondhills Lane to the management of community groups such as the GBAA in order to reduce costs but keep valuable assets open. The GBAA are hoping to take on Pondhills Lane, keeping it for the community. How can you help? We need the support of the local community if the transfer is to go ahead. You can help by offering a few hours of your time. We need a wide range of skills and experience to make this a success, from administrative to DIY, everybody has something that they could offer. To find out more please email annecrosbie@me.com or come along to our Open weekend 21st-23rd July.

HIIT
HIIT stands for High Intensity Interval Training. It can be a combination of or an individual exercise performed for a stated period with short rest intervals to break the intensity up followed by a short 1 to 2-minute rest. HIIT training is designed to push your heart and respiratory rate above an endurance level creating something called EPOC, excess post oxygen consumption. It is basically in short, the body taking in more than needed amounts of oxygen triggering fat stores to be used for energy.
Here is an example of a HIIT circuit that can be performed either in a gym or at home.
HIIT Circuit • 15-20 minutes’ total time (see how long you can last with maximum effort) • 4 minute rounds – within these 4 minutes you work flat out on each exercise for 20 seconds with a 10 second rest • Each 4-minute round should have 8 x 20 seconds of exercise.
This also creates a continuous reaction for a period after exercise where the body will look to replace the depleted energy store by breaking fat down to fuel the body until the body starts to receive carbohydrates to bring the blood sugar levels back up.
• After each 4-minute round take a 2-minute recovery break, as soon as the 2 minutes are up you start the next exercise.
A little piece of advice, if you are going to use HIIT as a form of exercise to lose bodyfat it is highly recommended you only use healthy carbs to recover. Consuming refined sugar will only speed up the uptake of carbs into the blood stream increasing your insulin and inevitably leading to a sweet tooth craving.

Westda leDenta I DENTALCARE FOR ALL THE FAMILY
Dental Health
Did you know that gum disease & plaque build-up are often the most common cause of tooth decay and eventual tooth loss? Around 80% of adults and more than half of teenagers are affected by gum disease. It is the biggest cause of tooth loss and linked to several major health conditions such as heart disease, stroke and bacterial lung infections.
At Westdale Dental we pride ourselves on the close working relationships between our dentists and hygienists so that you can be assured that your dental health is always in good hands. Our dedicated team of hygienists are fully qualified to assess and treat any gum problems you may have and carry out gentle but thorough scaling and polishing to more advanced gum treatments for gum disease. Our hygienists can also offer Airflow polishing; this is a gentle treatment which uses a fine jet of water with sodium bicarbonate to achieve great stain removing results. Direct Access - Change in legislation means that patients can directly access the services of a dental hygienist without seeing a dentist first. You can now continue to see your own NHS or private dentist for regular dental care and choose to see a dental hygienist for gum care and cleaning. At Westdale Dental, our team of hygienists are now able to offer appointments to non-registered patients who would like to benefit from this service and enjoy a healthier, cleaner, fresher mouth, or if it's just for that "Special Occasion", a wedding or a social event, why not call us today to book your appointment.

National Trust
(Nottingham Centre)
Nottingham Centre members have plenty of activities to look forward to over the summer months, including excursions, walks and holidays. Coach Excursions These include a trip to Coventry Cathedral and Leicester Guildhall, Hughenden Manor (NT), Lichfield Cathedral and the National Memorial Arboretum, and in September, Waddesden Manor(NT). Walks Several walks are planned, some of which start from Nottingham by public transport (that’s my kind of walk) to places of particular interest. In June there’s a walk from Bonsall to Rowsley in Derbyshire, in July, a walk from Knowle to Packwood House(NT), in August it’s Crich Stand to Cromford Mill, and finally, in September, Greetham to Edith Weston via Rutland Water. Holidays The short walking holiday in May has become a popular annual event. This year members will enjoy the beauty of Tintern and the Wye Valley. Two other holidays are planned: one in June - ‘Southern Delights’ will explore Hayling Island and Hampshire, while the break in September offers an opportunity to visit Lancashire Hotspots – in particular the Hotspots of Manchester! Garden Group Visits planned for this popular group include Thoresby Hall Gardens and Chatsworth RHS Flower Show. Local and Family History Group In addition to the delights listed above this group offers visits to Ruddington Museums, Stoneywell, the charming recently acquired Arts and Crafts house in Leicestershire (NT), and Beauvale Priory in Nottinghamshire.

Are you beach ready? might be asking yourself, what does a You psychotherapist know about getting beach ready? Surely someone who deals with matters of the mind isn’t going to be of much use in helping me to look good in a bikini? You’d be quite right – there are other people far more knowledgeable than me in matters of diet and exercise to help you look your best on the beach if that is what you want to do. I am speaking to the rest of you. Those of you who would maybe like to put in the time and effort to diet and exercise but know that realistically, that’s probably not going to happen this year. Should you resign yourself to buying a cheap tent from Decathlon and wearing that on the beach? No. I firmly believe that everyone has the right to feel comfortable in their own skin, no matter what size they are, no matter whether they have scars, stretch marks, folds of skin or any of the other bodily attributes that tend to get airbrushed out of media coverage. That doesn’t mean that if you wish to change your shape or lose weight that you shouldn’t try to do that - just that it doesn’t help you to feel bad about yourself right now. Very few people manage to make positive changes to their lifestyles or their lives by beating themselves up and tearing themselves to shreds. In actual fact, that is more likely to get in the way of positive change – after all, who feels like doing something positive for themselves after taking a verbal battering? One of the most important things you can do for your own body confidence is forget all about the images that you get fed through the media every single day. Those images are not a true reflection of how real people look – even the people in those
images don’t look like that in real life. The images are so digitally manipulated – stretched, slimmed down, every single human flaw edited out at the click of a mouse – that you will never be able to achieve that in real life and will only make yourself miserable trying. Nobody is perfect, not even the models that smile down on us from the billboards, and you will find it much easier to be at ease with yourself physically if you no longer try to live up to such unrealistic standards. In reality, when you are sat on the beach in your swimsuit, no one will actually be paying as much attention to you as you think they are. We tend to think that everyone is looking at us, most likely thinking negative thoughts about how we look or what we are doing, but really those people are doing exactly what you are doing, sat there wondering what everyone is thinking of them in their swimsuit. The truth is, most people are usually too busy thinking about their own stuff and their own lives to be paying too much attention to you and your life. Just to finish, whilst writing this article I came across a great tip for body confidence and I love it. The tip is... smile more. If you catch someone looking your way, give them a big smile as though you are brimming with confidence – not only will the other person think that you are indeed brimming with confidence, you will make yourself feel better too. Wear what you like on the beach as long as you wear it with a huge smile and spend more time having fun and enjoying your life than worrying about what you look like.

Stay Safe This Summer We hope you are enjoying the summer months in our beautiful county and spending time with friends and family.
Summer is a fantastic time to go visit local parks across Nottinghamshire but while spending time outdoors it’s important to ensure your property is secure. Security outside your home Ensure your doors and windows are shut and that your keys are kept in a safe place and out of sight, when outside. By leaving your house open in the warmer climate it can entice thieves to your belongings, so please don’t let them have this opportunity. Dogs trapped in hot cars Please don’t leave dogs in cars – even for a few minutes – as temperatures inside vehicles can rise rapidly, which can distress dogs. When the weather is warm owners should always ensure that pets have plenty of cool, fresh drinking water available to them. Cars, conservatories and caravans are not suitable for dogs to be left in. If the animal is starting to show distress but the situation is not life threatening, try to locate the owner to make them aware. If you are in a car park anywhere that may have a public address system, ask for an announcement to be put out. In the meantime, please contact the police on 101, giving as much information as you can about the vehicle, registration number and
location as officers can arrange to attend and try to make contact with the registered keeper of the vehicle to make them aware. If the matter is getting near life or death for the animal please call Nottinghamshire Police on 999 stressing the urgency. Going on holiday If you are leaving your property, please ensure your house is secure and notify neighbours so they can keep an eye on your property. Suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers otherwise it could alert thieves that you aren’t currently at home. Try to make your home look occupied while you are away. Use timer switches on lamps or your radio. Don’t leave valuable items such as laptops and jewellery in view of windows. Ensure that sheds and out buildings are locked and secured. If you have an intruder alarm, make sure it’s set. If you don’t have one consider having an approved alarm system installed. Visit www.nsi.org. uk to find approved companies in your area. Be a good neighbour If you see anyone acting suspiciously in your neighbourhood, call the police on 101 or, in an emergency, 999. If you would like to speak to your local police, call us on 101. There is also plenty of information and advice guides on our website: http://www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice

Under The Park by Bob Massey
Arnot Hill Park was once common ground known as South Field. It stretched from what is now Mansfield Road on one side, to Arnold Hill Road and Nottingham Road on the other, as far as the Greyhound pub. This area was common land used by the people of Arnold to graze animals, free of charge. All this changed in 1791 when, like large chunks of England, the common land was enclosed and given to local land owners. What was to become Arnot Hill Park was divided up between several different people. This had a devastating effect on the general population of Arnold as the stocking makers and others depended on this land to raise their few animals. Now in the hands of landlords who expected rent or cultivated the land, the people of Arnold were deprived of the very thing that kept them from starvation. John Hawksley and Robert Davison rented and then purchased some of this land from the new landlords to build a mill and a home for John Hawksley. This plan saved the village. It provided the stockingers and the village with work and changed what would have been a disaster into one of prosperity. These were times of unrest throughout England. Riots and protests were common and the owners of Arnold’s new mill were worried that they too would be subject to these disturbances some of which were becoming very violent. John Hawksley built what is now Arnot Hill House as his home. The mill was built on what is now the car park and bowling green in the park. An apprentice house housing 600 children and their adult overseers was
built on Nottingham Road on what is now a builders merchants yard. As part of this work, a tunnel was built that ran from the house via the mill to the apprentice house. This was a substantial system within the sandstone rock. In times of trouble this would allow passage between these three points. It also afforded storage and passage of goods and people in bad weather. Hawksley and Davison were very good employers and so managed avoid the troubles that started in the late 1790s. Their escape route was not therefore needed. Many other mills were attacked between 1811 and 1817 so they were right to be cautious. The mill ceased production and was demolished in 1810 just before the main Luddite demonstration. These protests started in Arnold and then spread across the country so the mill could well have been the first target. After the mill was demolished the apprentice house was converted into cottages, from then on known as Cottage Row. The tunnel was excavated when Cottage Row was demolished. The images show one section. The tunnel was a very substantial structure which was used as an air raid shelter in World War Two. It is now sealed off and so how much remains is unknown. It would have provided a great tourist attraction just like the caves in Nottingham but one end at least was just filled with concrete to make the builders yard. It’s now just another part of our history lost forever beneath our feet! At least the photos remain.
I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
Everything starts small.
Every cloud has a silver lining, and every piece of silver creates a cloud. Wishes-come-true can bring pressure (to live up to your dream), unexpected reactions or side issues. Don’t be surprised if this happens this month. All you need to do is to be strong, not necessarily in a ‘brute’ way but by demonstrating other forms of strength- compassion, resilience, faith and courage. A wonderful life event, and lesson, is coming your way.
(Page of Coins, Queen of Cups, The World)
(The Star, The Tower, The Emperor) A life changing month lies ahead…
It’s time to end something big in order to start something small; something exciting. Don’t fear that it doesn’t look like it will replace what you’ve curtailed, because everything starts small. Don’t fret or backtrack to familiar turf, because that day is over anyway. Invest in something/one else. This will become your future if you start it now.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
(Ace of Cups, The Devil, Temperance)
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Seven of Wands, Ten of Wands, Justice)
Be different this time around.
Be nice as you walk away.
A new enthralling, enduring romance is possible this month; one that reignites your appreciation for life itself. This time, play things differently to your usual code. Don’t follow the path of least resistance, but try a new approach. Consider where things have gone awry before and consciously break the pattern. This new love has the potential to change you for the better if you let it.
We often end something (a job, relationship, project, hobby) when we get into a conflict or it gets too much. That’s OK. And it’s happening again with something this month, but the important thing here is to be gracious and fair as you cut ties. Don’t disturb Lady Karma (because she remembers). You can escape unscathed if you behave chivalrously.
Kerry Ward is a Nottingham based tarot reader, and Cosmopolitan magazine’s tarot expert, with over 20 years fortune telling experience, and many happy clients all over the world. You can book a personal, written reading, which comes as a beautifully illustrated brochure, at www.tarotbella.etsy.com or follow her at www.facebook.com/mytarotbella. Kerry will be doing readings in person at The Tarot Van, in the courtyard of Nottingham Industrial Museum, from 12-3pm on Sunday 25th June and Sunday 30th July.

The Friends of Gedling Country Park have won £18,425 in funding from Nottinghamshire County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund to commission an artist to create a permanent piece of art in the new memorial garden at Gedling Country Park. It will commemorate the miners who worked and died on the site and provide a focal point for anyone wishing to spend a few minutes in quiet reflection. The group applied for money from the County Council’s Supporting Local Communities Fund. Gedling Colliery was the life-blood of the village and its surrounding areas until it closed in 1991. The site stood derelict for over 20 years before being transformed into a country park in March 2015. The Friends and Gedling Borough Council have been developing the memorial garden within the country park for a number of months and have already installed several large metal ‘rings’ to mark the entrance – these were salvaged from the former colliery, where they were used underground to maintain the stability of the tunnels.

WHAT’S NEW AT WEST MIDLAND SAFARI PARK? Staff at West Midland Safari Park have a fun-filled 2017 planned for their visitors, with brand new events, some exciting new arrivals and the chance to meet the latest babies. The Park’s busy events calendar has been updated to include some new exciting conservation weeks, where guests will get the chance to take part in unique VIP experiences, enter competitions to win some amazing money-can’t-buy prizes and learn just what they can do to help, even from the comfort of their own sofa. So come and join us at the park when we host Protect Lions Week on 17-25 June. As well as the new events, guests can come face-to-face with the newest arrivals at the Park - 2016’s babies! Ekozu, the southern white rhino calf, will most likely be charging around the four-mile safari. Then there is the chance to meet the pack of 22 African painted dogs, 14 of which were born in July - the biggest litter the Park has seen. In August and September, the Park welcomed Embu and Emali, two baby Rothschild’s giraffes. Then on 14 January 2017,
another baby giraffe was born. Named ‘Fennessy’ by his keepers, the baby boy already stood at six-feet-tall when he was born. Also new for 2017, a family of gigantic pterosaurs soared into the grounds of West Midland Safari Park and made it their new home. With a wing span averaging around 11 metres, quetzalcoatlus was the largest animal to have ever taken to the skies. West Midland Safari Park is open daily for its summer season from 11 February until 3 November 2017. The standard admission charge is £23.00 for adults, £18.00 for children aged 3-15 and £21.00 for concessions. Admission includes a voucher for a return visit or safari gift. Prices also include admission to the four-mile safari, Discovery Trail exhibits, animal encounters, African Village and live shows. Theme Park rides charged extra in all cases. Further information is available from the Park’s official website www.wmsp.co.uk or by telephone 01299 402114 You can follow the progress of the baby rhino on the Safari Park’s official Facebook page: www.wmsp.co.uk/facebook

Daybrook Girls Help Build A ‘Ginormous Choir’
£48k New Games Area For Arnold Play Park Plans to build a multi games play area in Arnold have been given the go ahead thanks to the awarding of £48,435.
500 members of Girlguiding Nottinghamshire gathered in Nottingham’s Albert Hall on Sunday 23 April to build a ‘Ginormous Choir’ in just a day. Those taking part included members of Rainbows (aged 5-7), Brownies (7-10), Guides (10-14), Rangers & Senior Section (14-25), plus adult leaders and volunteers from all over the county. Amongst a contingent of girls from the Daybrook Division were Nylah Baxendale (6), Daisy Perry (7) and Caitlin Marsden (7) (pictured) of 98th Nottingham Rainbows. Daisy and Caitlin both decided that Be My Guest was their favourite song, and all three really enjoyed singing with lots of other Rainbows. ‘This is my first Rainbow event,’ admitted Nylah. ‘I didn’t realise it would be so big!’ The day’s activities were led by a team from community arts organisation Music for Everyone, who steered the scratch choir through a selection of well-loved tunes from favourite Disney movies. The morning was filled by group workshops and rehearsals, with each age group given their own songs to work on, and the event closed with an informal concert where the ‘Ginormous Choir’ sang for their families and friends. Girlguiding Nottinghamshire is recruiting additional adult volunteers in order to whittle down the waiting lists and create more opportunities like the Ginormous Choir for girls and young women all over the county. Anyone interested in finding out what’s involved is invited to call 0115 987 7220 or visit www. girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

The Muirfield Road Recreation Ground in Arnold will be improved thanks to funding from WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. The money will be used to install a multi-use game area (MUGA). The funding bid was made jointly by Gedling Borough Council and the Warren Action Group, a local residents group. The group have been working to revitalise the playground area and were granted planning permission by Gedling Borough Council in March last year to start work and begin applying for external funding. Sue Jablonskas, Chair of the Warren Action Group, believes the facility will make a huge difference to the lives of people living in the area. Sue says: “It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our MUGA taking shape over the next few months. It will provide a safe place for ball games to be played and will encourage children, young people and adults in the area to be physically active. This is the first phase of our project to improve the facilities available on the Muirfield Road Recreation Ground. It will provide a real boost to the people in the Warren Action Group area. We are grateful to the Officers of Gedling Borough Council who have supported us with this application and we are continuing to work closely with them to achieve the best value possible for the money that has been awarded. ”

rs wer Range o P s w ie v e Bur ton R oot Go Go Reb Power Rangers holds a special place in my heart, starting at a very young age and finally deciding to quit the obsession way too long after I should have! So when Saban and Lionsgate announced they were making a film rebooting the original Mighty Morphing Power Rangers, I, with the rest of the internet, grimaced and just waited for the horrible betrayal of my childhood to be released. Power Rangers follows Jason (Darce Montgomery), Kimberly (Naomi Scott), Billy (RJ Cyler), Trini (Becky G.) and Zach (Ludi Lin), as these teens with attitude discover five unique brightly coloured coins that give them super strength and agility. With the help of Zordon (Bryan Cranston) these five teens learn to unlock their full potential just in time to stop an evil force, in the creepy form of Rita (Elizabeth Banks), destroying the whole world (of course). Probably the most surprising thing about this movie is that it doesn’t really feel like the cheesefest we all thought it would be. Great cinematography and a gritty atmosphere give this film a special feeling that helps the world of the Power Rangers become a tangible and relatable one that, while is taking itself seriously, isn’t afraid to dive into the fun and more outlandish aspects of the original show. Each member of the team had a really interesting backstory that was both surprisingly mature and well handled with modern issues that aren’t explored much in mainstream films. It is this grounded quality that really helps elevate the original Rangers from their cardboard 90s counterparts, to actual living, breathing characters. While the action that does happen is cool and had me smiling like a little boy again, fist pumping for team work and badass explosions, these cool moments of action are skipped over way too fast. No phase of battle is allowed the appropriate time to sit and bask in how epic it was. Instead the film barrels through the final battle, just
missing goosebump level, and leaving me happy at what I just saw, but feeling slightly off about the whole thing. So the film did have its problems, after all, it is a movie called Power Rangers. But the surprising amount of care and thought that was put into the film’s characters, atmosphere and cinematography, coupled with how damn cool the Power Rangers looked once it was time to kick ass and explode some giant monsters, really took me off guard and had me way more into the film than I thought I would be. Power Rangers= 7.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)
