Sensational Bill’s by Francine Leary

F

ormerly a bank, this Georgian building is a beauty. With high ceilings and a striking mezzanine, Bill's Nottingham restaurant is a mix of larger seating areas and cosy booths, with further seating outside for sunny days.

‘til 5pm) two courses for £11.95 or three courses for £14.95, or the Dinner (Sunday to Thursday from 5pm ‘til close) two courses for £16.50 or three for £19.50 incorporating most of what we ate. We'll be back!!!!

It has a quirky interior, almost industrial, with exposed brick and pipework yet cosy, a very relaxed and informal restaurant, the music and lighting were tasteful and not intrusive. This atmosphere genuinely put us all in a lovely mood ready for our meal.

At Bill's their menu caters for every occasion and dietary requirement. If you are vegan, vegetarian or avoiding gluten, they have you covered. They've also introduced new Dinner Specials so there is something new to try every day of the week.

So to our starters, wonderful crispy calamari with red chilli and lime aioli, cooked to perfection and chicken and seasame dumplings with Bill's spicy chutney. Very very tasty, enjoyed by both adults and our children alike.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable evening and Bills is up there as a family favourite!

Our beautifully presented main courses of Pan fried chicken with wild mushroom and a creamy mushroom sauce, Bills Fish Pie and then children's sausage and mash and a burger and chips were all delicious and fresh. Simply lovely! To finish, although full to the brim, we managed to share a Bill's chocolate and hazelnut praline sphere which was devine. Scrumptious brownies and ice cream for the kids. (The kids menu is £6.95 for 3 courses including a drink.) Bill's have great value set menus, either Lunchtime (Mon to Fri 12pm

Convenient for both the Theatre Royal Concert Hall and the Nottingham Playhouse, Bill's Nottingham restaurant is perfect for breakfast, lunch, dinner and everything in between.

Turkey... Not Just For Christmas! I

n Britain we have been eating turkey at Christmas since the 16th Century. In fact Henry VIII was supposed to have been the first person in this country to have turkey for his Christmas dinner. Like about 80% of the population we have turkey once a year, on Christmas day. However, having a fitness fanatic in the family has changed all that. Whether you are looking to cut down on red meat or just want a change, mince turkey breast might be worth considering. It is high in protein

and low in fat making it a really healthy alternative to mince beef. It was not something I would ever have even contemplated buying until recently. Now I buy it once a week and experiment with various recipes. It can be a bit of a bland meat so works well with spices and strong flavours. Here are a few tried and tested recipes that have been cooked by my 18 year old son – so I can guarantee they are foolproof and also delicious!

Ali Wale

Thai Turkey Burgers

Turkey Chilli

Turkey Enchiladas

500g turkey mince 100g fresh breadcrumbs 1-3 tbsp Thai red curry paste (depends on the brand, we use a very hot one) 4 spring onions - chopped 1 egg - beaten Salt & pepper Oil for frying

1 tbsp rapeseed oil 1 x onion 1 x red pepper 2 x garlic cloves 2 x sticks celery 1 x chilli (inc. seeds for extra heat) 500g turkey mince 1 tsp chilli powder 1 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander ½ tsp turmeric 1 x 400g tin chopped tomatoes 1 x 400g tin kidney beans, drained & rinsed 2 x squares dark chocolate (optional) Salt & black pepper

Turkey chilli (see left) 4 x large tortilla wraps Enchilada sauce (see below) Grated cheese

(makes 4 generous burgers)

Either place all the ingredients in a bowl and mix together with your hands or put them all in a food processor and pulse a few times to combine. Divide the mixture into four evenly sized burgers and shape. Put on a plate and chill for at least 30 mins. Heat oil in a frying pan and fry gently until brown on the outside and cooked through. Serve with coleslaw and a green salad - or in a wholemeal burger bun. EASY COLESLAW Thinly sliced white cabbage, grated carrot, finely chopped onion and sliced celery mixed with a sauce made of salad cream and mayo.

(serves 4)

Put the onion, red pepper, garlic, celery and chilli in a food processor and whiz until finely chopped. Or chop all finely by hand. Heat the oil in a large pan and add the chopped vegetables. Fry on a medium heat until soft (about 15 mins). Add the spices (cumin, coriander, turmeric & chilli powder if using) and cook for a minute then add the turkey mince and fry, breaking up the meat with a wooden spoon or spatula until the meat is cooked (about 10 mins). Add the tinned tomatoes and half a tin of water and bring to the boil. Simmer for 30 mins, stirring every few mins. Add the kidney beans and 2 x squares of dark chocolate (if using). Season to taste with salt and black pepper. Cook for another 5 minutes. Serve with rice, jacket potato or use for the filling for enchiladas.

(serves 4)

ENCHILADA SAUCE 1 tbsp olive oil 1 x onion, finely chopped 1 x garlic clove, finely chopped 500g passata (or 400g tin chopped tomatoes) ½ tsp dry oregano Tabasco sauce - dash Squeeze of runny honey Salt & black pepper First make the sauce - Heat the oil in a small saucepan. Add the chopped onion and garlic. Fry on a medium heat until soft (about 15 mins). Add the oregano and passata. Bring to boil, then simmer for at least 30 mins until reduced to a nice thick sauce. Add honey and seasoning to taste. Add Tabasco for a spicy sauce. If it looks too thick add some water. Heat oven 200°C. Grease a small square oven proof dish or roasting tin. Put a small amount of sauce on the bottom of the tin. To make the enchiladas – grab a wrap – put some chilli and grated cheese in, roll up and lay in the tin. Cover the top with more sauce and grated cheese and bake in oven for 30 mins or until golden. Serve with salad, Mexican rice & sour cream.

Walks With Emily & Friends Caythorpe Circular Walk Walk distance: 4.2 miles Difficulty: Easy (although please note there are quite a few stiles) Starting point: The Black Horse Inn (car parking at the pub) NG14 7ED Caythorpe is about 30 mins drive from Nottingham city centre. This walk is particularly scenic and passes some great farm animals on the way. Start the walk by turning right out of the pub car park, until you reach a road bridge over the Dover Beck. You will see a small turn off into a field marked by a public footpath sign and a green dog waste bin. Take this turning, and follow it round. At the end of this path you will see a stile leading into a field of sheep, keep to the right of the field along the path and next to the beck. Carry on down the path and you will reach another stile. Go over it and through the gate directly on your right towards Mill Farm. Ahead, you’ll cross Mill Stream (there is a ford on the left you can walk through, but the water was quite high when we went) there is also a footbridge, you’ll be pleased to know! Continue down the farm track until you see another public footpath sign pointing left. Follow this along a clear fenced path (with a lake on your left and a ditch on your right). Eventually you’ll reach the Gonalston- Hoveringham road. Cross this and carry on down the footpath. There will be another lake on your left and ditch on your right. Keep walking until you see a footbridge on your right. Go across the footbridge and follow the path towards and through the Hoveringham Village cricket field. Walk around the edge of the field and up past the Reindeer Inn on your left towards the main road through the village. Carry on down the main road for about 150 yards until you reach Post Office Yard on your left. Directly opposite this and next to Laburnum Cottage there’s a footpath (marked public footpath). Follow it down until you reach a field. Follow the edge of the field round to a stile at the top right and then continue to follow the path over a series of stiles. Eventually you will come to

16

Lodgefield Lane - turn right down here until you reach Boat Lane. Turn left down Boat Lane and follow the road round the bend. You will now be able to see the River Trent. Keeping the river on your left, follow the path for about a mile past the car park until you reach a gate. Go through the gate and continue along the side of the river. Please note these fields are used to graze cattle, so you will need to keep your dog on a lead at this point. Continue until the hedgerow bends round to the right and you can see another gate in the distance. Follow the path next to the hedgerow and through a gate to another field. Keeping to the right-hand side, follow this up until you reach the main roadHoveringham Road. Continue down Hoveringham Road for a short distance until you reach the starting point, The Black Horse Inn.

pets A Former Streetcat Called Mr Bob

A local animal rescue charity has transformed a feral cat into a real ‘softie’ – who is now appealing for a home. Animal Accident Rescue Unit, came to the rescue of ‘Mr Bob’ – who was eking out an existence as a stray. After months of care with his voluntary foster, Mr Bob is now extremely affectionate – and is appealing for an indoor home with no other cats. As his fosterer explains: ‘Mr Bob’s such a loving cat, and he deserves a proper home. He’s FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) positive. This is a hugely misunderstood condition: it doesn’t affect his quality nor length of life, but just means he cannot live with non-FIV cats.’ As with all the charity’s cats, Mr Bob is micro-chipped, flea and worm treated, littertrained plus vaccinated – his new owner is responsible for further vaccinations. Mr Bob would love to hear from potential adopters: to arrange to meet this exceptional cat and for details, please either call 0115-9321555 or email admin@aaru. org.uk - leaving your contact details clearly. A volunteer will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck and cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads, unless indoor-only. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals needing homes, see www. animalaccident.org.uk.

Tanya About Town Can you believe we’re already half way through the year? Let’s keep our fingers crossed for a great summer because festival season is upon us. Nottingham’s first ever Fake Festival kicks things off (1st June) with a day of live music from six pro-level ‘Fake Bands’ with tributes to the Killers, Green Day, Stone Roses, Bowie, Blondie and Pink. Speaking of tributes, you can also catch Meatloaf (7 June) and Tina Turner (29 June) at the Royal Concert Hall. Detonate, one of Nottingham’s favourite underground and electronic music festivals also returns this summer to the idyllic surroundings of Colwick Country Park (8 June). Newark Festival is back for its eighth year running in the beautiful setting of the Riverside Park, in view of Newark Castle. Expect music, food and fun for the family. Forest Live is back at Forest Pines, part of the beautiful Sherwood Forest (28-30 June). This year welcomes Jess Glynn, Paul Weller and Jack Savoretti. The concerts are renowned for their informal and relaxed atmosphere set to a spectacular forest backdrop. Money raised from ticket sales helps to look after the nation’s forests sustainably, for people to enjoy and wildlife to thrive. Nottinghamshire’s biggest outdoor music event, Splendour, takes place at the beautiful setting of Wollaton Hall and Deer Park (20 July). Headlining are Manic Street Preachers and The Specials, as well as Rag’n’Bone Man, All Saints and a whole host of artists, comedians and entertainers. As well as the festivals, of course there is the usual line-up of talent to look forward to. The Royal Concert Hall plays host to SophieEllis Bextor (4 June), Nick Cave (25 June), John Barrowman (28 June) and Gladys Knight (30 June) while down the road at the Motorpoint

If you prefer your drama indoors, Mousetrap, the longest running show of any kind in the history of theatre comes to the Theatre Royal (17 - 22 June). Hit musicals The Body Guard (11-22 June), Kinky Boots (27 May - 8 June) and Club Tropicana (8-13 July) are all worth going along to see at the Theatre Royal and you can’t escape from those stars of Strictly! Catch a trio of the Professional dancers in Here Come the Boys at the Royal Concert Hall (4 July) plus Anton and Erin waltz in to Thoresby Hall Hotel as part of the entertainment (5-8 July). Food lovers can look forward to joining Harts Hotels head chef Martin Sludds for an evening of Lobster, Chateaubriand and a bottle of Chateau Violette Moulis 2014 (7-17 June), or enjoy a hearty BBQ and traditional steel band - a real treat for dads on Father’s Day at the lovely Ye Olde Bell Hotel and Spa in the quaint village of Barnby Moor in Retford and there’s the chance to learn all about Beer and Cheese pairing at The School of Artisan Food (30 June). If you’re a fan of fitness, there’s another chance to try the Sunrise City 5k (5 July). The early morning walk/run will take in famous landmarks, including Nottingham Castle and Ye Olde Trip to Jerusalem before a picturesque return along the Notts-Beeston Canal or give your pooch a work out at the Muddy Dog Challenge taking place in the grounds of the spectacular Wollaton Hall (29 June) and raise money to

help care for the dogs and cats at Battersea. Animals of an all together different kind descend on the Royal Concert Hall (6-7 July). Dare to experience the dangers and delights of Dinosaur World Live in this roarsome interactive show for all the family. Yet another record for the Notts Guided Walks booklets Demand has again forced the popular Notts Guided Walks booklet to a 9,000 print run for 2019, supported now by a more modern website nottsguidedwalks.co.uk that is more mobile-friendly. Some self-guided routes are being given down-loadable GPS files for your mobile phone. See our web-site for details. Most of the walks are short - the longest is 8 miles. There is a large section in the book for health walks too, perfect for our less able or recovering walkers. These walks are taken by trained leaders as part of a national scheme.

Bingham and District Choral Society

Over the past two years, we have concluded our singing year with a short, informal lunch-time concert in St Mary's Parish Church, Newark. We have enjoyed beautiful weather on both occasions and have attracted tourists and Saturday shoppers as well as regular supporters of the choir. Last year we performed alongside other choirs and ensembles as part of the Byron Festival. This year the choir will give its own concert of English folk songs, including a selection from John Rutter's Sprig of Thyme. This will take place on Saturday 6th July 2109 at 11.30am and will last for approximately 45 minutes. Guy Turner will conduct and Edward Turner will accompany.

a helping hand Not just about transport...

There’s a lot more to Gedling Voluntary Transport Scheme (GVTS) than transport. Firstly, it’s about people. Getting out and about is what most people take for granted, but for people with walking difficulties or health-related conditions, it makes getting out a challenge and it’s very easy to just give up and become isolated. That’s where the transport service steps in to help. One passenger said: “Without this service, I would be housebound –it’s really comforting to know that you are there”. Around 200 people in Gedling rely on friendly and helpful volunteer drivers to get them to many different places from doctors and health visits to socialising and shopping and many more venues. The transport service connects people to their friends, family and communities helping to ease loneliness and keeping people involved, interested and contributing to their communities. New passengers join regularly, but GVTS is keen to spread the word to ensure anyone who could benefit is aware of the service. GVTS is always keen to welcome new customers and is always interested to hear from new voluntary drivers. If anyone is recently retired, or wants to give back to their community, then please get in touch and volunteer your driving services. Expenses and petrol are covered. Call the transport team on 0115 969 9060, email transport@rushcliffecvs.org.uk or visit our website at www.rushcliffecvs.org.uk

Many thanks to all who have responded to last month’s article on Arnold Foodbank from Vernon Coaker. Since then the official national statistics for Foodbanks across the country have been published which has confirmed a 19% rise in demand from 17/18. Arnold’s figures for the same period are nearer 30%! Some people have questioned me over the years on the need for foodbanks. Some say “I struggled when my family were young but I managed, so can they” – my response – wouldn’t it have been good if there was someone there for you to turn to. Many people coming to us are estranged from their families so don’t have that support network. Many have parents in similar difficult situations to them. We also have a large amount of people with mental and physical health issues that mean they struggle to have stability in their life. They are often just getting on an even keel when a change in their life sends them off course again. Then there are the very ordinary folk – people like you and me and your neighbours. Redundancy, bereavement, illness, even just a child leaving home, can all send your finances into chaos. Don’t stick your head in the sand. There are people out there to help you – even before you get to the need of Foodbank. I would recommend King’s Money Advice Centre – based at Kings Church, off Rolleston Drive. Citizens Advice is also available in the Civic Centre on Fridays. To donate to the foodbank we have collecting points at the Civic Centre and Asda Arnold as well as most of our churches. You can also donate directly to us at Daybrook Baptist on Monday, Wednesday and Fridays from 1.153pm.

Climate Change -

the biggest crisis our planet has ever faced? For what has seemed like the first time in over two years, the main story taking up the majority of parliamentary debating time and dominating the headlines both nationally, and locally, is not Brexit. With this lull in Brexit related news, parliament has managed to allocate valuable time to debating the one issue that transcends Brexit, and arguably takes precedence over all other issues. It is of course, climate change. Climate change is the one issue that affects us all, whether you live in Arnold, NG5 or Athens, Greece, the pending climate disaster should concern us in equal measure. Given the severity of the warnings provided by scientists and climate experts, I was both relieved and encouraged to see climate change climb up the agenda in Parliament in recent weeks. You may have read in the national papers that a merry band of fresh-faced climate conscious youths are spearheading this movement, and you’d be right, but it’s not just the Swedish teenage campaigner Greta Thunberg making waves where climate change is concerned. The climate action youthquake has not escaped NG5. I have been working closely with the incredibly impressive duo, Amy and Ella Meek – founders of Kids against Plastic. Kids against Plastic operate on the understanding that for consumers to be, as they describe, more “plastic clever” they not only need to be armed with the facts, but also need to be given the choice to make more informed, environmentally friendly lifestyle choices. Since they started, Kids Against Plastic have picked up over 60,000 pieces of single-use plastic. We can all be more plastic clever by simply substituting everyday items that we buy with sustainable or recyclable alternatives. Even something as simple as swapping your morning plastic takeaway coffee cup for a re-usable alternative is a good place to start.

Amy and Ella have been employing a series of lobbying campaigns, with the primary aim of encouraging businesses, schools and even councils to become plastic clever. Which brings me on to the impact that Kids Against Plastic have had on our local Borough Council. Earlier this year, following a speech made by Amy and Ella to councillors, Gedling Borough Council unanimously approved a motion to become one of the first Plastic Clever Councils. This will involve the gradual phasing out of: all sales of single plastic use bottles, disposable cups, cutlery and drinking straws, as well as many other measures to discourage unnecessary use of plastics. Gedling Borough Council are not the only council on board. I recently met Alisha and Shahnaz from the Carlton Le Willows School Council, who handed me their climate change petition signed by a plethora of their fellow students from Carlton le Willows Academy. I will continue to fight their corner in parliament and represent their concerns regarding the decline in our environmental standards. In a world where young people often get a bad rap, I’m sure many of you will agree with me how refreshing it is to see young people as pugnacious as Amy and Ella Meek, and as passionate as Alisha and Shahnaz making a positive contribution towards the most pressing issue facing our future. We can be sure that the future of our planet is safe in the hands of the next generation. With the stellar work of Gedling Borough Council that complements perfectly our youth activist hard work, I see no reason why our local area can’t be at the forefront of the climate change revolution. We can be proud that our community is leading the way in the fight against climate change and showing other areas how it’s done!

How To Spot An Employment Scam by Helen Jones There have been a few news reports in recent months of job hunters being scammed whilst searching for an opportunity. In a survey conducted by SaferJobs, 71.3% of job seekers assumed a job would be genuine if it was posted on a jobsite. The same survey showed that 62% of people look online for new positions. Research shows that young people aged between 18-24 are most likely to be targeted. People pay for expensive training courses which don’t exist – sometimes jobs which don’t exist – or pay for CV services or security checks with illegitimate companies. The fact is that recruitment businesses like Solos are governed by legislation which has been drafted to protect candidates and also to make it easier to identify reputable and ethical agencies. We are required by law to tell you up front about our services and what we will charge you for. For example an agency cannot make finding you suitable work conditional upon you paying for an additional service i.e. CV writing. Any advertisement must clearly state whether the opportunity is permanent or temporary so that job seekers are not misled in any way. If a job offer seems too good to be true it probably is. If communication comes from a generic email (hotmail/gmail/outlook etc) not a legitimate company then be wary. There are numerous organisations which can guide you during your job search. If in doubt always seek further clarification. And never be afraid to quiz any recruitment agency who may contact you : www.safer-jobs.com www.gov.uk/agency-workers-your-rights www.rec.uk.com/about-us/for-jobseekers

THE POWER OF FITNESS Article after article, I love to be able to bring you some sort of take away value that you can implement into your life and reap the benefit. This time I’d like to share something that’s close to my heart. Two people, two stories… two very different approaches.

STORY 1 You might recall the article on my client Gail a few months back, how Gail had retired and taken on a new challenge to push the boundaries of limitation. Gail came to me wanting to compete and step on stage with the intension of saying ‘I did this’, a personal conquest. Gail is doing amazingly well – her relationship with food and exercise has been transformative and she is on target to meet her goal.

STORY 2 Katie, another client of mine, came to me because of the unique skill set I have of turning life and all aspects of it around using fitness and nutrition… with a little mindset coaching in there too. Katie suffers with mental health issues, something very close to my own heart and knowing full well how fitness saved my life, Katie found herself in a similar situation a few years back.

You see, when you get the balance right, the body falls in line and food is enjoyable because you get to eat how you like and still move in a positive direction. What most fail to realise is the power exercise holds in crafting the future we deserve. It saved my life, gave Katie focus and a new positive way of living and gave Gail a challenge that helped her achieve a personal goal.

Wanting to not stress about exercise, understand how to nourish her body but still enjoy life as it should be, was the goal.

Don’t follow the crowd. Don’t conform to outdated values. Plough your own furrow and follow your dreams. Exercise and fitness can play a part whatever your plans.

Katie intended to start my program to take back control of her life, what she got was a lot more.

Small changes can massively improve your quality of life and how life presents itself.

In a matter of four weeks we’d already established a lifestyle that really fitted with Katie’s demands of day to day living.

How will you change your life this week?

The point I am making here is how powerful fitness is and what it can help you achieve when you get the right guidance. Most people think exercise is only about weight loss and building muscle and associate it with a vanity thing. Sure, for some that might be the case, but for others, including those I work with, this is far from the case. Exercise is an outlet, a focus, a motivating factor, a contributor to life and career. Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show Goes From Strength To Strength Leading classic vehicle events organisers Classic Shows reported an ‘excellent turnout’ for the popular Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show which took place at Thoresby Park over the early-May Bank Holiday weekend. Now running for over 25 years, this family friendly event attracted 1,000+ vintage, classic and modern classic vehicles over the weekend and featured a large autojumble, vehicle judging and awards and quality food and drink all set within the stunning grounds of Thoresby Park & Courtyard. Visitors were also able to experience a host of new content for 2019 including modern vehicle dealership exhibitors, new trade stands and enhanced children’s entertainment. Classic Shows director Matthew J Harvey commented ‘Once again, we saw unbelievable support from vehicle exhibitors and visitors alike who turned out in their numbers and contributed towards a fantastic weekend of motoring heritage. We were delighted with how the new content was received and a specific mention must go to our sponsors Classicwise Collection and Crowdpullers Events who managed the modern vehicle dealership stands. Bookings are now open to exhibit, trade and visit our next event at Thoresby Park on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2019’.

Classic Shows will run over 20 events in 2019 – including the huge Father’s Day Motor and Classic Car Show at Castle Howard, nr. York on 16 June 2019 – and return to Thoresby Park for a one-day event on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2019. Vehicle exhibitor, trade/autojumble and visitor bookings are now open and can be made by visiting www.classicshows.org or by phoning the Classic Shows office on 01484 667776. Don’t miss Classic Shows’ return to Thoresby Park for the Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show, Monday 26th August 2019.

NG5 JUNE / JULY 2019

A winning year for Marshall Volvo NOTTINGHAM’S Volvo dealership is celebrating a record-breaking year for the Swedish brand. The motor manufacturer with a reputation for producing some of the safest and most sturdy cars around picked up no fewer than 43 significant awards during 2018 while also enjoying its highest sales in the UK in 28 years. With a total of 50,319 new car sales, the firm certainly bucked the trend in a UK market which declined overall by seven per cent. There were awards for all three Volvo SUVs, with the XC40 claiming 12 of them. These included the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year title and Auto Express’s Small Premium SUV of the Year award for the compact model now available to test drive at Marshall Nottingham on Valley Road in the city. The XC60 was the first award winner of 2018 in being voted Best Medium Crossover in the UK Car of the Year honours. The XC60 also won the Safety Award in the What Car? honours and was voted New Car of the Year in the AM Awards in which Volvo was named Manufacturer of the Year. This model was further voted UK Car of the Year in the UK Car of the Year Awards and took the Best Large SUV titles in both the Fleet World Honours and Parkers New Car Awards. In the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year competition, the XC60 pulled away from the pack as Towcar of the Year, the Best Family Towcar and the Best Towcar, caravan weight 1500kg-1700kg. The XC40 was Best Towcar, caravan weight 1350kg1500kg. The XC90 was named Large SUV of the Year in the Company Car Today CCT100 awards while the Which? Awards saw Volvo selected as Car Brand of the Year.

Volvo was voted Best Fleet Manufacturer in the ExpertEye Awards and in the Motor Trader Industry Awards and BusinessCar Awards was Carmaker of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year respectively. The PHEV Manufacturer of the Andrew Moss, Year went to the brand in Retailer Principle, Marshall Nottingham the GreenFleet Awards. Volvo’s drive for cleaner motoring was further recognised with the XC60 T8 Twin Engine voted as Large Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in the DrivingElectric Awards. These achievements were reflected internationally, with the XC40 named European Car of the Year and the XC60 mid-size SUV acclaimed as the World Car of the Year. Meanwhile Volvo’s UK performance contributed to another year of record global sales, with more than 640,000 Volvo cars sold worldwide. The launch of the new V60 premium estate delivered further success, with family car awards from Parkers and News UK, and the Practicality Award from carwow. It was also named Estate Car of the Year in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards and Best Compact Executive by Carbuyer. Andrew Moss, Retailer Principal at Marshall Nottingham, said: “This exceptional run of awards is amazing to see, but each one is appreciated for the vote of confidence it represents in what we are doing to extend the all-round strength and appeal of the Volvo brand. “We are immensely proud of our new range of cars, and our record-breaking sales show our customers rate them, too. We encourage car buyers in Nottingham to come and take a test drive to experience their award-winning features for themselves.” For more information on the Volvo model range, go to: www.volvocars.com/uk or visit Marshall Nottingham on Valley Road, telephone 0115 8284533.

Arnold Market by Bob Massey

As I write this, Arnold market, now run by Gedling Borough Council, is being transformed. Most town markets have a long history, often given a charter by some king in the 13th century, but not Arnold. Arnold did exist then, and was a well established small town. It was some five miles from Nottingham, the nearest large town, and isolated in the centre of Sherwood Forest; but it didn’t have a market. In fact it never had a market until the present site was filled with stalls in 1966. So I’m sorry Arnold folk, there was no visit from King John to give it a royal charter. He was not far away, at Bestwood, from time to time so he may have visited the village, but not to shop for food! The oldest street map of Arnold dates from 1609 and shows the land, now the market, as farm land with a farm house situated about where the Methodist church is today. The boundary of this farm appears to be the row of shops known as Market Place on one side, and the ends of Worrall Avenue and Gedling Road. As time moved on through the centuries, it remained farm land but a new farm house was built on the other side of what became Worrall Avenue, on the site of the present building society. This site eventually became the last of the farm houses in Arnold, latterly called Suttons before being replaced with the present building. John Worrall, the builder and farmer, occupied the site and still had the fields opposite. He gave his name to the new street. The Methodist church first met in the barn that was then on the land that is now the car park for the building society. Worrall gave part of his land, on the other side of the road, to build the old Methodist church, the Ebenezer Chapel.

The land left over from removing the school was an ideal position for a market and so this was opened in 1966.

But why had it taken so long for Arnold to aquire a traditional centre for the town? In the past, Arnold was isolated in the forest and people did not travel far in this inhospitable area. As a town it was very self-contained with factories, workshops, shops and later cinemas, clubs and dance halls, in fact everything that was needed to sustain the population was right there in the town. The local farms also grew mainly vegetables, not crops. As vegetables were the main reason for markets to exist, Arnold people did not need a market until the population started to move and some of the old factories and other facilities closed down and the vegetables were now being sold to the supermarkets. What is the most popular and longest running stall on our present market? The vegetable stall of course! As the market was originally farm land and most farms grew vegetables maybe you have always been able to get your vegetables here...

The land now occupied by the market was given by Worrall to build the British School. This was built as non-conformist alternative to the Church of England National School on Calverton Road. When the school closed it was demolished, along with the old Methodist church and a new church (the present one) was built on the site.

Heleniums

MY FAVOURITE PLANT The great garden writer Christopher Lloyd, when asked what his favourite flower was, replied: “the one I’m looking at now”. It’s that way with me with heleniums; all are beautiful in their own right, all are equally easy to grow and all do a great job in the border, be it a 15-inch (38cm) edger to a 6-footer (180cm) at the back. Heleniums come in all shades and variations of yellow, orange and red. The only thing to remember is that heleniums need good sunlight to obtain the best colours. All heleniums are a great source of nectar for bees and butterflies which will flock to the flowers with glee. Gardeners often think of heleniums as late-flowering, adding colour to the August and September garden, but with careful selection of varieties and regular dead heading and watering, you can have heleniums in bloom from mid-June until the beginning of November. The short varieties are usually earlier to flower and with dead heading will go on longest. Probably the best is the 2ft (60cm) tall Mardi Gras with its jolly masses of flower and a strong constitution. Also, highly recommended is the bright red Red Army and Fata Morgana a lovely variety with upswept petals in apricot with orange undersides making a beautiful two-toned effect in the garden.

Mid height heleniums (3ft / 60cm tall) are great for the middle or back of borders (depending on the size of border). The most popular is Sahin’s Early Flowerer but a better choice is the magnificent El Dorado with very large golden yellow flowers. Tall varieties (4-6ft / 120180cm) might need a stake in an exposed site but I rarely need to resort to this as the stems are very thick and strong. Amber is the best of newer varieties with masses of flower on upright plants. You can’t go wrong with the 4-5ft old variety Kanaria with its canary yellow flowers. For something showier the picoteeedged flowers of Vicky stand out well at the back of the border. Heleniums mix well with lots of garden plants. I particularly like them with grasses in late summer – short moor grasses (molinia) or taller silver grasses (miscanthus) and feather grasses (pennisetum). There are a few simple rules to follow to get the best out of heleniums: water whenever dry even in spring or autumn; deadhead short varieties regularly; cut down the stems to just above the ground in winter and only divide or move them in spring not autumn. Follow these and heleniums should come back each year to brighten up your summer and autumn garden.

m (!) a z a h S : s w e Bur tonRevi DC has been on a winning streak recently in cinemas. Things have been looking up for the company that started all of this superhero business way back in the day. Now, to kick off 2019, a young and mostly unknown hero wants to impress his elders and rule the box office. But it’ll only happen if he says the magic word: Shazam! Shazam! (yes, the exclamation mark is actually in the title) is basically every kids wish fulfilment put on the big screen. After being magically transported to the lair of an ancient wizard who protects all the realms with his magical powers, 14 year-old Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is tasked with taking up the wizard’s mantle as protector of all. But he’s just a kid, I telepathically hear you cry, how can he protect his lunch money, never mind “all”? Well luckily when Billy says the name of the wizard, Shazam, with heroic intent he becomes a superpowered adult (here a beefed up Zachary Levi) with a multitude of mystical powers such as flight and the ability to shoot lightening from his fingers. It’s a pretty sweet gig. That is until a bonafied supervillain, in the form of Dr. Sivana (Mark Strong), hunts down the superman-child wanting the wizard’s power all for himself. Can Billy show the good doctor that experience isn’t everything, or should the wizard have chosen someone else? While DC hasn’t always been on the mark when it comes to casting, every member of the Shazam! cast is instantly loveable, making for an entertaining movie even with a bland and often awful storyline. The dialogue of Shazam! feels lazily written. This laziness extends to the overall plot unfortunately. Through the early moments of the movie Dr. Sivana is an intriguing villain. Set up as Billy’s evil mirror version, his back story is refreshingly well told and the parallels between Sivana and Shazam are grounds for a great discussion on nature and nurture. However past the early parts of the film, about when Sivana gets his army of seven bland sins, the good Doctor becomes nothing but a faceless bad thing to punch a lot. Instead of evolving the superhero genre further, Shazam! simply falls into many of the same bad and

boring tropes that we have seen too many times before. I don’t know whether it is because of a lower budget, but almost none of the fantastical elements of Shazam! look good at all, especially the sickly CGI. Every time Shazam leaps into the air to begin flight you can instantly see where the man ends and the awkward rubbery CGI body begins; nothing on screen looked believable or impressive. Overall I did have a good time with Shazam! The cast are an immensely talented bunch that are clearly having a shed-load of fun, and I wish I could have had as much fun with them. But when your script is this bad, your story is this bland, and your CGI this ugly, it is hard for anyone’s charm (even Zachary Levi) to outweigh this many cons. Maybe with a bigger budget and tighter script this could have been another DC great, sadly that is not what happened here. Shazam! = 6/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

5 2 e h T e l a T Year

Along with the Ford Mondeo, Jurassic Park and Power Rangers, last year Gary and I celebrated our 25th anniversary. Together for 25 years!!! Looking back it really is a miracle that we made it past 25 days. Here are some of our firsts:

First met – at a night club in London on Halloween, queuing for the cloakroom at the end of the night. Him to me: nice hot pants. Me to him (sarcastically): whose coat you wearing? Your dads? Him to me: my dad’s dead. To be fair, that could have gone better. First date – an Indian restaurant in Harrow. After a lovely meal he tells me he’s only got a tenner. Not being funny but even 25 years ago that was never going to cover the bill. Start as you mean to go on…

Did you know... • up until 1875 only 25 & 50 year anniversaries were celebrated • apart from silver, roses & iris are traditionally given for a 25th anniversary • the most common gift for a 25th anniversary is jewellery (hint, hint!!) First row – this coincided with our first weekend away in a quaint cottage somewhere in Wales. All weekend I kept setting him targets (in my head, not out loud). So, I would say to myself, if he doesn’t clear the dishes and wash

up, he’s dumped. Or, if he doesn’t make me a cup of tea, he’s dumped. Needless to say – he was dumped. First home – tiny little flat in London. When it came time to move we cleaned the flat from top to bottom and on the last night decided to “cook” ourselves a romantic meal, M&S Cumberland pie followed by a Heinz treacle sponge. Living the dream! Only trouble was, we failed to see the inch high black warning on the tin to “open this end” and the minute we stuck the tin opener in there was a liquid explosion of molten syrup that literally sprayed the whole kitchen. Our romantic night was spent scrubbing every inch of that kitchen. First proper holiday – never doing things by halves we decided to go on a world trip. Landing in our first destination we were so excited that we left the airport and got in a taxi before realising we had left our ruck sacks in the baggage reclaim. Not the best start. First child – all our friends thought we were a bit weird, having a baby. Clearly none of them had the first idea about parenthood. Presents I received in hospital after giving birth consisted of a set of pink lacy undies and a pot plant!! So, what do we put our longevity down to? I say patience, understanding and a live and let live attitude. Gary says wine!

kids Killisick Pupil Heads To Slovakia Killisick Junior School pupil, Harry Childs (age 10) has received the fantastic news that he will attend the ‘Great Britain Lions Development Squad’ for Ball Hockey being held in Zilna, Slovakia. The training camp is preparation for the upcoming 2019 International Street and Ball Hockey Federation (ISBHF) Development Camp and Zilna International Tournament. Harry plays under 13’s ball hockey with the Nottingham Huskies, part of the Wolves Academy, and says he loves the sport, “I was about 7 years old when I first started to play, and I really enjoy it. My Dad took me to my first game and I liked it straight away. “I wouldn’t say I am the best player on my team, but I am really good in defence. I think the faster I go, the stronger I am when I hit the ball!” Harry says his dream is for his team to win tournaments. “I sometimes get nervous before a game, but I love it when my team scores a goal, or I like it when the really good players give me advice.” Harry lives in Arnold and says he owes a lot to his family for support. Mum, Ali Childs said, “It’s worth the effort for me. I love to watch him play and as a family we have always really loved the sport. It’s great to see Harry enjoy it so much and even his sister has started to play now too.” Harry says he is looking forward to travelling abroad to brush up on his training. “I feel really good about all the new things happening to me because of hockey, and I am really excited because I have never been to Slovakia before!”

£100k Funding for Arnold Play Park A popular play area in Arnold will have a £100,000 refurbishment and extension thanks to external funding. The Muirfield Road Recreation Ground in Arnold will be improved thanks to funding from WREN, a not-for-profit business that awards grants for community, conservation and heritage projects from funds donated by waste and resource management company FCC Environment through the Landfill Communities Fund. WREN will be providing a grant total of £89,250 and the Warren Action Group will providing the required match funding of £10,750 making a total of £100,000. The funding bid was made jointly by Gedling Borough Council and the Warren Action Group, a local residents group. The group have been working to revitalise the playground area and previously received £48,000 from WREN for a multi-use games area which was opened in 2017. Sue Jablonskas, from the Warren Action Group said: “It’s fantastic that WREN has awarded us this money and we’re really looking forward to our new play facilities taking shape over the next few months. It will encourage children and young people in the area to be physically active. This is the third and final phase of our project to improve the facilities available on the Muirfield Road Recreation Ground and will provide a real boost to the people in the area. We are grateful to the officers of Gedling Borough Council who have supported us with this joint application and we are continuing to work closely with them to achieve the best value possible for the money that has been awarded. ”

kids Killisick School Library An Oasis For Reading

Killisick Junior School has a newly revamped library which is proving to be a calm oasis for children to read in. Kay Greensmith is a Parent Governor at the Arnold based school and attended the launch party. She said, “The room is a lot airier and has a very pleasant environment now. I think that the library will be used a lot more by children, especially because we have a lot of new books available.” The story books in the library are now organised by author said Kay, “I think that’s a really clever idea because when children find a book they have enjoyed, they can easily find others by the same author.” Teacher Karen Carpenter (English Lead at Killisick Junior School) is responsible for the transformation in the school’s library. She said “It was a fairly standard room before with old book cases and was a bit messy and disorganised. We have tried to create a much more positive and cheerful area. To do that I have painted the room and put a mural on one wall, we also have all new bookcases and have just ordered another £1500 worth of books.” Many of the new books were chosen by pupils and included their favourite subjects, characters and authors and there is also a ‘recommended to read’ area to encourage children to try new titles. The grand opening was attended by children who are the pupil librarians along with their parents and Parent Governors of the school.

Ernehale Infant School Raise Massive Amount For Comic Relief!

Children at Ernehale Infant School took part in a ‘Street Dance-a-thon’ to raise money for Comic Relief. But when staff totted up the sponsorship money, they could hardly believe their eyes! Head Teacher, Emma Johnson explained. “The children had prepared well for the dancing event and even before we began, they had been working hard to get sponsors. “To raise the money our Foundation children danced non-stop for 30 minutes, the Year 1’s for 45 minutes and Year 2’s for 60 minutes. The children had great fun being taught how to street dance by Laura from Premier Arts, part of the Premier Education Group, who taught pupils lots of new and exciting dance routines.” Emma said that the local community were always willing to get involved. “The school’s friends, families and wider community are always great supporters of the events the children take part in, and it is something we are always grateful for. That being said, we couldn’t believe the generosity they had shown to raise money for Comic Relief! “In total we raised a staggering £2025.95 for the worthy cause, and when you consider that we only have 210 pupils, it demonstrates not only the perseverance of the pupils to complete their dances with smiles on their faces, but also their determined fundraising efforts and the outstanding generosity of the Ernehale community. All of the staff and children want to say a big thank you to everyone who supported us in this fundraising effort.”

still no response. Slightly unnerved I called one of my housemates and between us we couldn’t get it to function. We just sat there, wordless. Gutted. Bizarrely I hung onto both the machine and the games for a year or so, possibly in the hope of some Lazarus style miracle. Barring the brief return to Playstation, I now own an Xbox 360. It does me fine for my gaming needs and, truth be told, I own more games than I’ll end up playing (and certainly more than I’ll end up completing). My son and I engage in regular games of Fifa, Lego Star Wars or Harry Potter, and he’s even taught me how to play Minecraft.

I

used to be alright at playing computer games, I spent many hours of my youth (probably too many) playing various games on various systems. Yet now, my mojo has left me. I think this might be the first stage of admitting that I’m getting old. How do I know this? My son reminds me every time we play. It only takes a game or two for me to realise how far I’ve fallen. Now my son takes me apart on a regular basis. Like a professional footballer whose best days are gone, it’s a chastening experience to see the youth overtake you. My love of games started when my family got a ZX81 (ask your dad kids), and on the occasions that the computer didn’t overheat we got to play and a passion was born. My best friend had a Spectrum and I graduated to a Commodore 64. Those glory days were characterised by having to play 2 player games each using different halves of the keyboard, constant arguments about which was the best joystick on the market, spending our pocket money on tapes (yes, tapes), and engaging in all sorts of despicable cheating to ensure we always got one over on each other. Then consoles hit and I variously owned a Megadrive, Playstation, and a Dreamcast (probably my favourite ever console). And I still remember the day my Dreamcast died with perfect clarity. I went to play a game of Jet Set Radio after work. I pressed the “on” button and nothing happened. I pressed it again,

Now though, the pressure’s on. He wants to play Fortnite and I know he’ll be well ahead of me. He already plays with his mates and now they’re telling me to update to a new console. There’s nothing as embarrassing as being told by a bunch of kids to up your game! And here’s the kicker, I think that these days I’d rather put on a game where I don’t have to think too hard. It’s easier for me to play a familiar game than work out something completely new. There’s nothing that worries me more about computer games than having to learn a new set of controls, or spend all that time getting into the story. I still love playing computer games, it’s a great pastime, but I’m certainly not the best player in the world. I’m not even the best in my house! And games are everywhere these days, on computers, consoles, tablets and phones. There’s never been a better time to play them, and I look forward to both my children realising that dad isn’t actually that good at them, no doubt they’ll end up teaching me (assuming they don’t think I’m completely rubbish).

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

The Lost City Adventure Golf has been shaking things up in its jungle themed Tiki Bar by adding shakes and light bites to the menu for adventurers to enjoy before or after they take to one of the themed 18-hole courses. Adding to the fun on offer at the venue, the selection of mouthwatering milkshakes sees three traditional flavours being given a tasty twist: Banoffee pairs fresh banana with sweet caramel syrup and toffee sauce while Strawberry Shortcake adds shortbread pieces to a blend of fresh strawberries, vanilla ice cream, milk and strawberry sauce. The Rainbow Chocolate option comes topped with bright, crunchy smarties and plenty of chocolate sauce. The perfect way to reward an adventure through the jungle, adults can even opt to add a shot of something alcoholic! Adventuring can be hungry work, so if you're feeling peckish try one of the new light bites, available throughout the day. Explorers of all ages will love the bitesize dough balls with a choice of dip while The Lost City platters have something for everyone with a selection of naan, pitta and flatbreads, various dips, and olives and marinated Mediterranean veggies. Take things up a notch with more vegan and vegetarian options including spiced croquettes and mini falafels, perfect for more adventurous tastes.

Perfect for explorers aged from 3 to 103, The Lost City is based in the centre of Nottingham in the Cornerhouse and offers fantastic fun for everyone – whether you're looking for an activity to do with the family, fancy an adventure with your friends, plan on bringing that date you're trying to impress or want to beat the boss with your colleagues on a work night out. Open whatever the weather 7 days a week from 10.30am – 11pm Monday to Friday and from 10am at the weekend, early bird discount applies before 12 noon, making it an epic way to start the day! Unless your group size is 10 or more, you can simply come down and play – there's no need to book and both of the courses have been designed to be wheelchair user and pushchair friendly so all adventurers can play!

it is as difficult as possible for them.

Please take our advice to keep your home safe whilst you are away:

• Fit a strong hasp and padlock to your shed door. Make sure the door is strong enough to resist being kicked or pushed in.

• Suspend any deliveries, such as milk and newspapers. • Ask a friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property. • Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there. Use timer switches on lamps or your radio. Securing your shed Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof.

• Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges. • Consider fitting a battery operated shed alarm. • Visibly mark the property you keep in your shed and garage and use anchor points to secure larger tools and equipment. • Register your valuables on the national online property database Immobilise so that Police can reunite you with them if they are ever stolen and later recovered. Visit the Immobilise website.

However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors. We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure Interested in a job working for the police?
