MUSICAL roundup If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: info@ng5.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.

Band Entertains Visitors in Style Nottingham Concert Band entertained visitors to a celebratory picnic at Patchings Farm Art Centre near Calverton in August to mark the centre’s 25th anniversary. The concert included a ‘pick-&-mix’ first half, where Conductor R o b e r t Parker invited members of the audience to help choose some of the pieces for the 50-strong band to play. The second half of the programme took the form of a mini-Proms concert, complete with enthusiastic singing and flag-waving. ‘The selection of music, the quality and the atmosphere was just what we wanted and we couldn’t have asked for more,’ said Patchings’ Chas Wood. ‘ It really helped us celebrate in style!’ For more about Nottingham Concert Band, visit www.nottinghamconcertband.org or call 01949 860126.

Old songs, new songs and Xmas! The Grand Central Chorus members returned to their first rehearsal after the International competition in Canada, looking to gently flex their vocal chords and ease their way back in. The Director had other ideas! - with new members to assimilate into the chorus and performances to prepare, it is into the repertoire of songs, a good feeling! The Christmas Concert this year is to be held on Saturday14th December in the May Hall, Trent College, Derby Road, Long Eaton NG10 4AD at 7.30pm. Tickets: £8 Children £5. Obtainable from Brian on 01773749737 , Nelson on 07967091202 or the e-mail below. The concert will feature Gem Ladies Chorus from Long Eaton as well as Grand Central and their quartets. Sweet treatS

Banoffi Pie

Kieran’s Key Lime Pie

300g ginger biscuits 70g butter 397g tin condensed milk or caramel 3 bananas 300ml whipping cream chocolate for decoration 20cm spring based cake tin Method

This recipe is adapted from a BBC Food recipe. 375g gluten free digestive biscuiits 150g butter 8 large limes (zest & juice) 1 pint double cream 397g tin condensed milk to decorate (optional) 85g creme fraiche If using condensed milk - place tin in a 1 tsp lime zest large pan of boiling water - making sure the tin is completely covered. Boil the tin for 2 to 3 hours. Keep checking and topping up with boiling water. This is very important. If the tin isn’t covered it could explode! If this is too much for you just use a tin of caramel. Grease the tin. I line with greaseproof paper to make it easier to get the pudding out. Crush the ginger biscuits (I use a food processor) to fine crumbs. Melt the butter in a saucepan. Once melted, add the biscuit crumbs and mix well. Line the bottom of the tin with the mixture and press up the sides. Use a flat bottomed jar to press the mixture firmly then place in fridge to set for a couple of hours. Slice the bananas and place on the biscuit base. Pour over the caramel (if using boiled condensed milk be very careful when opening the tin). Whip the cream and when cool cover the top with cream. Decorate with chocolate shavings or sprinkles.

Method

Crush the biscuits either in a food processor or in a bag with a rolling pin. Melt the butter in a pan and stir in the crushed biscuits. The mixture can be split between 2 x 18cm tins or 1 x 23cm tin. Press mixture into tins & chill in the fridge. Put lime juice, condensed milk & cream in a bowl and whisk for 1-2 mins. Add lime zest to mixture (save a tsp for decoration) and stir in. Pour mixture onto biscuit bases and chill for 2 hours or overnight. Decorate with crème fraiche and lime zest

Strawberry Tart

This recipe is adapted from one by Jocelyn Dimbleby in a Sainsbury’s cook book called Sweet Dreams.

175g plain flour 60g caster sugar 100g butter 300ml creme fraiche 350g strawberries 3 tbsp strawberry jam finely grated rind & juice of 1 orange (3 tbsp) Method

Sift flour & sugar into a bowl. Melt butter in a pan along with the orange rind and 2tbsp juice. Once melted add to bowl and mix well until a smooth dough is formed. Press mixture into a 24cm flan tin. Using hands press over the bottom & up the sides then chill in fridge for 30 mins. Heat oven to 200°C. Bake pastry blind for 20 mins until edges are pale golden colour. Take out oven and pour in creme fraiche then return to oven for 10 mins. Once tart is cold decorate with strawbs. Gently heat the strawberry jam with a tbsp of orange juice and spoon over the top to glaze. Chill until ready to serve.

Volunteers Wanted for Books on Wheels Service Royal Voluntary Service is a national charity with over 70 years experience and 40,000 amazing volunteers of all ages, who support older people to stay independent at home and active in their local community. Our extraordinary history of service to local communities is matched only by our passion to make Britain a great place to grow old. We would like to recruit Volunteers to our Books on Wheels Service particularly in the Arnold area of Nottinghamshire. The key task would be to deliver and collect library books, CD’s etc for older/ housebound people. We are looking for individuals who can drive and have access to a car. However if you cannot drive, there are still opportunities to source and collate books within the Library, and also to go on rounds with other volunteers. Just a couple of hours every week, fortnight, or month can make a big difference and volunteers can use all the valuable skills and experience they have gained over the years, or develop new ones whilst helping someone in their local area. We provide any training necessary and reimburse expenses so that volunteers are not out of pocket. To find out more please contact our Service Co-ordinator Christine Precious on 01623 703939, Mobile 07834 753385, email: christine.precious@ royalvoluntaryservice.org.uk

Arnold Park Celebrates Green Flag Award

Arnot Hill Park in Arnold is celebrating after it was announced that they have been awarded the Green Flag award for the seventh year in a row. The national award, handed out by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognises and rewards the best parks and green spaces across the country. A Green Flag flying overhead is a sign to visitors that the space boasts the highest possible standards, is beautifully maintained and has excellent facilities. Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said: “We are delighted about winning the Green Flag award for the seventh consecutive year and the picnic in the park is just another example of the great events that take place in the park. We are very proud of the work done by our Park Rangers and Parks team, all year round, to make Arnot Hill Park one of the best parks in the country.”

Thanks to a Nottinghamshire charity, a young dog has recovered from horrific neglect and injuries – and found the loving home he has probably never had. Chips, a Staffordshire bull terrier was only three months old when rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit. This vulnerable youngster was enduring a fractured skull, swollen limbs and multiple cigarette burns – clear signs of abuse. Helped by funds and dedicated care from the charity’s volunteers, Chips recovered from his ordeal - with the best news being that he recently moved into his real home! As for all the charity’s adoption animals, Chips was micro-chipped, neutered plus flea and worm treated; and his new home pre-checked. The charity, however, still has many other ‘Chips’ – rescued, loving cats and dogs yearning for that chance of a home. To find out who is currently waiting for that special place, visit www.aaru.org. uk, or to enquire, submit your telephone number and postcode by email to admin@aaru.org.uk or call 0115-9321555. Following his traumatic experience, Chips enjoyed the comfort of a foster home provided by Animal Accident Rescue Unit volunteers. More fosterers, however, are urgently needed for other equally needy rescued animals. Learn more about this enormously rewarding role by either emailing as above or calling the Recruitment Officer on 01159563799. For general and other information, call the charity’s lifeline number 0115-9321555 or visit www.aaru. org.uk.

Grants Available for 100th Anniversary of First World War On 4 August 2014 we mark the 100th anniversary of the start of the First World War and I am urging all community groups, schools and other organisations to consider applying to the Lottery Fund for money to help with any planned community projects. Grants from £3,000 to £10,000 are available for such projects. All communities in the UK have been affected by the First World War and the changes which it brought about and with a grant from the Lottery, groups will be able to share their experiences. It should help engage young people and others who haven’t been involved in heritage before in exploring the experiences of people affected by war. I am already aware that some schools are planning events jointly with other community

partnerships to explore the effects of WW1. The Lottery Fund’s new programme will enable, for example people from the community to conserve a war memorial or perhaps explore archives and help young people understand how the war shaped our modern world. I’m delighted that the Heritage Lottery Fund is making this money available to local communities. Like many areas across the UK, the impact of the First World War on the people of Gedling was extensive. For those who want to find out more about its legacy or who wish to mark the Centenary, I would urge them to get in touch with HLF. Inspector Andy Knight talks.... Halloween can be a trick or a treat this year depending upon a number of factors. Traditionally the next couple of weeks are a very busy time for police officers. We all like to make the most of a happy occasion and celebrations for both Halloween and Bonfire Night tend to spill over into the previous and following days and nights. But part and parcel of these celebrations comes the unfortunate increase in calls to the police. I’ll be donning the vampire fangs, gorging on treacle toffee and enjoying the light display in the night’s sky with the rest of you, but this year I would like to make a few requests. Parents, be aware of where your children are Trick or Treating and who they are with. Ensure they keep it light-hearted and respectful and don’t let them stay out too late. I can say with confidence that most people do not want goblins and ghouls knocking on their doors at midnight. In fact, why not grab a Jack-o’-lantern and join your children. You never know, you may get a few sweets thrown your way for your efforts.

And don’t forget your pets, while you are out having fun watching and listening to the rockets flashing and banging, your animals are probably very frightened. Ensure you keep them indoors to reduce the impact of the noise and avoid the chances of them escaping. The Fireworks Regulations 2004 prohibits the use of fireworks after 11pm. On 5 November fireworks can be used until midnight. Breaches of this curfew can result in a penalty notice of £80. Remember, the purchase or possession of fireworks by those under the age of 18 is illegal, as is the sale or supply of fireworks to someone under 18. The throwing of fireworks, no matter what the target, is not only illegal, but wholly unacceptable and dangerous. You can be sure it will be dealt with robustly by my officers. We will be conducting increased street patrols and officers have the power to stop and search anyone believed to be in contravention of the firework laws. Any breach amounts to a criminal offence and can result in fines, prosecution and even jail. And as well as posing a threat to your criminal record, the misuse of fireworks, including sparklers, can also inflict severe burns, which can leave scars, cause blindness and even death. No one wants that on their conscience.

Website prices that are too hot to handle... We’re not sure if you’ve noticed, but Synergy Design has gone into overdrive with a new advertising campaign. Unfortunately, only a week after launch our bus campaign came to a grinding halt when the bus was totally gutted after catching fire (due to an engine problem, not our scorching hot deals). We’re glad to say that nobody was injured and that the new bus is now back on the roads. WHY? - The reason we are making such a big hoo-hah is because we have come up with a way for you to get a website that’s as cheap as an everyday boring static site, but as beautifully designed & mobile device friendly as a totally bespoke site. IN SHORT! - We have combined fantastic web design with unbeatable prices - FACT! SCARY! - Most people get worried when you mention websites, but on our site we explain everything you need to know in Layman’s terms. We have also put a great deal of thought into how the order process works, we have specially designed content forms, which we believe makes life so much easier when you want to get on-line. WOW! - With amazing 5-page websites that we build for you, from as little as £20 per month, you’d be mad not to at least visit our website and have a look for yourself. If you already have a website but paying high hosting fee’s, we carry on with our unbeatable prices for your needs too with hosting including one mailbox for just £45 for the entire year! Get on-line, visit synergydesign.org.uk for more details.

A big Thank You to all our local customers! We’d just like to take this opportunity to thank all our local, customers for their wonderful support over the last 4 years. As some of you know, we started out at the height of the recession, and like to think that our constant drive to offer the best customer service available and very competitive pricing has allowed us to grow at a fantastic rate. As a result we have moved to larger premises within Calverton and now have a showroom and workshop located on Park Road East within the Daleside House Business Park. Due to further demand for expansion, we’ll be looking to double our workshop size over the course of the next few months and install some offices dedicated to our website design work. Of course, none of this would have been possible if it wasn’t for the support from all our customers over the last 4 years, and again we’d just like to thank you for your repeat custom and recommendations to friends and family. If you haven’t had chance to meet us yet, why not pop down or give us a call? We’re a friendly bunch and always up for a chat! Thank You once again, Andrew and the team at pcmIT

Age: 13 Sport: Swimming - Racing County: Nottinghamshire How did you first get involved with your sport?

I learnt to swim on holiday when I was 4, and then started swimming lessons when I got home. I joined Arnold Swimming Club when I was 8.

Swimming News... Arnold Leisure Centre Refurbishment - Latest

The refurbishment of Arnold Leisure Centre started after the August bank holiday with the initial refurbishment of the reception area due to be complete by the end of September. The Leisure Centre will then open temporarily until late November before closing for refurbishment of the changing rooms which is due to take approximately 12 weeks. As we announced in the last edition of NG5 we are delighted to have secured alternative pool time at other local pools. Details of where and when we will be training are presented at the bottom of this article. Swimmers will be made aware of the sessions they are expected to attend and it’s important that swimmers try and attend as many of these sessions as possible to maintain their fitness for the Club Championships and hectic gala season which is now in full flow. We intend to keep swimmers and parents up to date with any developments and changes via the Clubs Website and e-mail and therefore can members please ensure the Club has up to date contact information which can be submitted via the Website.

Whiting Trophy Gala - Mansfield

The club gala season began on Saturday 7th September with us taking part in Mansfield SC Whiting Trophy Gala at Watermeadows. Unfortunately due to swimmer availability the squad was a little under strength in a couple of age groups which meant some swimmers having to swim up out of age group. However that said the team worked really hard throughout the evening and there were some good early season performances. Congratulations to Charly Neilson, Amelia Tsolakis, Anthony Tsolakis and Andrew Tsolakis who all competed for the club for the first time.

Who was the first person Club Championships Due to the refurbishment of Arnold LC all of this year’s events will be to spot your talent? Ella’s Teen Talk:

Handling Parents

...especially at Christmas!

The date was the 26th July. I was completely unprepared. I couldn’t believe it. I was happily spending my day taking a lovely walk and shopping with my mum when she turned to me and said ‘’Oh I better start thinking about Christmas presents!’’ It was July.

Ella Higginbotham aged 15

Don’t get me wrong I love getting in the Christmas spirit; going out and buying lots of presents then coming back home and wrapping them with a warming cup of tea and my favourite Christmas CD playing in the background, but that normally occurs about a week before Christmas. Why do some parents insist on starting the preparations for Christmas before the Halloween costumes are even in the shops? Bless them; they just can’t contain their excitement! Well when I say parents, this usually applies to mums. In fact the dads are quite the opposite, waiting until Christmas Eve to approach the shops with a panicked look as they rummage through the scraps of what the women haven’t already brought. So my advice to you is to leave them both to it and just aim to start your preparations somewhere in between so if your parents do get stressed, it isn’t your problem (but don’t tell them that, that wouldn’t help with their stress!) Another parental bug bare of mine around Christmas is the food shopping. Do they think that there will be food shortages for 9 months after Christmas?! Seriously there are only so many mince pies I can eat before I actually resort to fruit as a substitute. I really do appreciate the effort that goes into Christmas dinner (my favourite meal of the year) and indeed the effort in the whole day in general, but it is ruined when we live off the left overs for weeks afterwards. My last column was about handling money so here is an extra tip for parents: buy half the food that you think you need, for the sake of the children! In my opinion, winter is the best time of year; coming home from school after battling through the cold and snow to be greeted with a hot chocolate Next and pyjamas at 4 o’clock in the afternoon, Christmas is just the icing on the cake. issue: Everyone loves the festivities no matter how many times they have been through New it or how hard it was to get there so my Years last tip is this, even if your parents get too overexcited about buying presents or Resolutions... decorating the tree don’t ruin it, it is a a good thing? magical time for them.

Auxillary Hospital by Bob Massey 2014 marks the centenary of the First World War. The war was a turning point in world history and effected the lives of everyone globally. Local history groups and organisations around the country are involved in projects to mark the centenary throughout the year. As many of you will know I am the Vice Chairman of the Arnold Local History Group (ALHG) who are one such group looking into the events of 1914-19. Our group are focussing on those who served and survived to return to Arnold. In 1913 Arnold Urban District Council bought Arnot Hill House and Arnot Hill Park as a new headquarters for the council. At the outbreak of war in 1914 they were organising their move from the old offices on Front Street but decided to let the Red Cross have the house and grounds for the duration of the war; little did they know that they would not now move in for 5 years.

farms or in trades where their skills were needed or where they had dependant relatives as well as a few conscientious objectors. Many of these local people volunteered for services such as the Red Cross and St Johns Ambulance, helping with the Auxillary Hospital, playing a vital role in the area. Arnold Local History Group are very interested in these soldiers and those who cared for them. We would love to know what happened to the men and the hospital staff and would be delighted to hear from anyone whose family were involved or who have family memorabilia of the hospital, its patients and staff. Did any of the staff or patients remain in Arnold? Are their relatives still here?

The building became an Auxillary Hospital run by the combined services of the Red Cross and St Johns Ambulance under the guidance of the local surgeon Dr Francis. Soldiers wounded in France were shipped back to Arnold by train to Daybrook Station in the middle of the night (so that people would not see a lot of wounded men). They then remained at Arnot Hill until they recovered and were either sent back to the front, invalided out of the service or died. When conscription was instigated in 1916 there were some, who though called up, were either deferred service or exempted altogether. This could be due to their involvement in war work, working the

There will be an exhibition and World War One heritage day in October 2014 when we will be able to show our findings. If you are interested in helping or have any knowledge however small we would love to hear from you. We will keep you up-todate via our web site www.arnold-historygroup.org which also gives details of all our meetings, courses and events.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

The increasing popularity of U3A in Nottingham will be demonstrated on Saturday 23rd November, when Gedling Borough Council’s Civic Centre at Arnot Hill Park is given over for the day to three local groups and U3A’s HQ in London, from 10.30 am to 3pm. The University of the Third Age will be promoting its key attractions to retired and semi-retired people – a new social life with many ‘Interest Groups’, started and managed by its members, to bring a sparkle to retirement and lots of new friends. Arnold Group, Carlton and Gedling, Nottingham and the Head Office will be represented, with leaflets and stands to promote their activities. These range from art appreciation and bird watching, through gardening, languages and local history, to theatre, travel and walking – well over 40 groups in Arnold alone. Morning coffee and afternoon teas will be served. With an annual subscription under £20, the U3A brings a lively but inexpensive boost to the fortunes of those in the ‘Third Age’ throughout the country. For further information, contact: Arnold 0115 967 9959 | Carlton/Gedling - 0115 911 6419 | Nottingham - 0115 950 8412 | Burton Joyce - 0115 931 2076 | National Office 020 8466 6139 or email national.office @ u3a.org.uk

The van, the first of its kind purchased by the council, will be used by the council inspectors making visits around the borough. The vehicle is exempt from road tax and 100% electric. It will reduce the council’s carbon footprint, reduce emissions and could make financial savings on a vehicle which could travel over 9,000 miles a year. Kevin McGuiness, Parks and Street Care supervisor, who has been using the van as part of his inspections around the borough said; “The biggest thing you notice is how quiet it is. I don’t miss stopping at the petrol station and overall it’s a very smooth ride. It can do around 80 miles per charge which, at the moment, is enough for me to get around the borough to do my job.” Councillor Peter Barnes, Portfolio Holder for Environment said; “It makes sense economically and environmentally for us to use these types of vehicles. This electric vehicle is a step in the right direction towards a more sustainable borough and we hope other local authorities and businesses fleets will follow suit.” The Borough of Gedling is also set to become one of the top sustainable energy providers in the UK thanks to a new solar farm that is to be established in the borough.

and mounds to enhance the ecological habitat of the area.

The solar panels that will make up the farm will triple the amount of clean energy provided in the borough from 2.38 megawatts of electricity (MWe) to 7.84 MWe, and could generate enough renewable electrical energy to run a 1,000 households - a small village.

Councillor John Clarke, Leader of Gedling Borough Council, said; “The solar farm will provide long term renewable and sustainable energy for our residents. This, in addition to the recent announcement of plans for the Country Park, shows our commitment to reducing our carbon footprint and providing a solid sustainability plan for future generations.”

To reduce any impact of the farm on local wildlife, developers Re-Fin Solar will install nestboxes

The solar farm is expected to be installed by 2014.

Gedling Borough Council approved plans on 7 August 2013 for the solar farm to be installed in the new country park on the former Gedling Colliery site.

The facts about fracking in Nottinghamshire

Nottinghamshire County Council is publishing a fracking factsheet for residents following a surge in enquiries prompted by recent media coverage on the issue. To date, Nottinghamshire County Council has not received any planning applications for exploration, testing or production of shale gas using fracking or any other method of extraction. The Council is reassuring residents and other interested groups that if plans were ever received in the future, they would be extensively publicised and subject to full consultation with the public and other relevent agencies. The Council's factsheet sets out the process any operator would have to go through before being given permission to carry out any fracking activity. The factsheet can be downloaded from: www.nottinghamshire.gov.uk/thecouncil/democracy/planning

ARNOLD TOWN FC

Good Start to the League Campaign

A good start to the League campaign with three wins in four has been somewhat diluted after early exits in two major Cup competitions. Defeat at Brigg Town by 4-2 in an FA Cup replay and at home to Blaby & Whetstone by the same score in the FA Vase all within five days has been a massive blow to the Eagles hopes this season although the League still remains a priority.

Fundraising

Fundraising is a big issue and ongoing at the Club and as promised a percentage raised will be given to Cancer Research the nominated charity of former Chairman Roy Francis. Chairman Graham Peck seen left handing over a cheque for £100 before the recent FA Vase game.

Local Joiner Celebrates 10 Years In Business Brendan Beecroft started his apprenticeship in 1985 aged just 16. He worked in the manufacture of luxury motor boats in Nottingham learning many skills and techniques that were to prove useful later in his working life. Brendan then worked in other areas of the joinery business from cabinet making, kitchen manufacture and fitting to wood floor fitting, shop fitting and general joinery work.

regret it for a moment, it enabled me to do my own thing and get back to a variety of work using those skills I have built up over the years." Now Beecrofts Joinery offers a complete joinery service from the smallest job right up to full renovations all at competitive prices.

"The boat building was a great grounding. When you think about it a boat contains everything you have in a house - beds, doors, cupboards etc. but they all have to be fitted in a confined area where space is at a premium. I learned a lot." Ten years ago Brendan made the decision to go self employed, "at the time I was doing lots of real wood and laminate flooring installations and had some help from local companies but realised I needed to cover a wider spectrum of work to make the most of my abilities. It was a big step but I don't

“Brendan built us a large, fitted storage unit...the final result was everything we wanted. We couldn’t be happier with the work and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend him to others.”

BEECROFTS JOINERY All joinery work undertaken by a time served tradesman with 25 years experience. All internal & external doors, hard & soft wood, supplied & fitted. All types of wood flooring fitted. Kitchens supplied and fitted. Happy to undertake any job, large or small.
