TAROSCOPES Libra (5 of swords, 9 of swords, Queen of wands)

There’s a woman you know. She’s sharp and demanding. You play out scenarios with her in your head: stressful ones. This is going to change, potentially in an unexpected way. Remember: your relationship has been fractured for a reason. You may not see, or like, it now, but there is a lesson concealed in your troubled rapport. Let the tension subside, because the worst is over. Heads high… her influence is moving into the rear view mirror.

Scorpio (3 of swords, 5 of cups, 2 of cups)

Betrayal is a wound with layers of pain. Then it forms a scar, usually a deep one, to prevent more of the same… But you’re going to meet someone this winter who reminds you of the positive power of a twosome. It might be a romance; it might be the rekindling of a relationship that’s waned; it might be a new friend or ally. But this relationship will be truly, mutually beneficial. A lifelong connection. Treasure it.

Sagittarius (King of cups, King of coins, Queen of wands) Everything ebbs and flows, nothing stays the same; good news when you’re down but a source of anxiety when you’re up. This winter, you are on the ‘up’ in the two big areas of your life: emotions and resources. You’re mastering how you feel about something which was once painful, and you’re realising you can make money and protect your security even in tough conditions. You’re a survivor. Revel in your strengths; nothing can stop you this season. Capricorn (8 of coins, The High Priestess, The Hierophant)

Ever the ‘climber’, you never stop planning and forging onwards. The path has been hard, but you’ve mastered much; what once was awkward now comes naturally. And yet there are still challenges to face. Perhaps the biggest one yet: what do YOU really want? Is the path you’re on as resonant and fulfilling as it was? Soul search your inner, authentic self this winter. Is 2017 a pivot for changing course?

Kerry’s Fresh:

Delivering to your area now! The Kerry family have been supplying the people of Nottingham with fresh fruit and vegetables for 131 years. That’s an awful lot of apples. But it is the next 131 years that boss Dean – the fourth generation of this popular local company - is thinking about with the launch of their brand new website. Kerry’s are evolving and in late September will launch an online store that will offer delivery to homes and offices across Nottingham. Dean said: “I am really excited to launch this new side of our business, along with my wife Gillian, son Aidan and the rest of the hardworking Kerry’s Fresh team. “We pride ourselves on providing our customers with high-quality produce, and can now do that in a way that is convenient and still inexpensive for them.” Customers will be able to choose from a variety of over 150 products, as well as a selection of fruit, veg and salad boxes, all at affordable prices. Business boxes have been specifically designed to hold 50 pieces of fruit, separate from one another to ensure that they do not bruise and are in the best condition possible for when they arrive to brighten up your workplace. Kerry’s will cater to the delivery needs of each business where possible. Home orders will be processed via postcode. Your area will be delivered to once a week, and your produce packed on the same morning to guarantee freshness. Delivery is free on orders over £15. Home boxes range from £8.99 to £17.99, while business boxes start at £20, with the best seasonal fruit as optional extras for an additional £5. All NG readers are entitled to 50% off their first order using the discount code opposite.

Mist and Mellow Fruitfulness As summer draws to a close and the nights become longer, the smell of Autumn is in the air. Harvest Festivals are celebrated, many of us are making jam and chutney by the lorry-load to use up the last of the summer fruits and those green tomatoes that never ripen, as well as all the windfall apples, plums and pears. Autumn also heralds a range of ancient festivals, Halloween of course, (the modern version largely imported from the US) but also a range of quirky local rituals that are still practised. In some villages, barrels of tar are set alight and paraded through

the main street, in some places cider is poured over apple tree roots and bizarrely dressed troupes ward off evil spirits with “Soul Cakes”. Halloween itself has its roots in a pagan Celtic festival “Samhain” and the Christian Festival of All Saints Day (All Hallows), when prayers were offered for the souls of the dead. Soon it will be Bonfire Night, with traditional toffee and warming soups and then, Winter will be upon us again. Make the most of the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” with these seasonal recipes.

Autumn Berry Flaugnarde

Fig and Dolcelatte Tarts

What better time than the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn to use up the last of the soft fruits and berries in this delicious and easy dessert. Not quite a true Flaugnarde and a bit like a traditional cherry clafoutis, this is cheap to make and perfect for using up a glut.

Fresh figs are a fantastic and under-used addition to the Autumn table. Their high sugar content makes them perfect to serve with something strong and salty, like blue cheese or prosciutto.

Ingredients A little softened butter for greasing 400g or so of mixed seasonal berries (or you could use plums) For the batter:50g ground almonds 2 tbsp plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 250ml double cream Heat oven to 190oC fan or 170oC/ gas 5. Grease a 23cm flan dish or shallow pie dish (not loose bottomed) and scatter the berries over the base. Place all the batter ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk until smooth, pour it over the fruits and bake for around 30 minutes until risen and golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of single cream.

(makes 6)

Ingredients 2 sheets filo pastry (22cm x 25cm square) A little melted butter 3 ripe figs 100g creamy blue cheese, I used Dolcelatte 1 tsp lemon juice 3 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped Sprinkling of ground paprika Preheat the oven to 190oC/Gas6. Brush two sheets of filo with butter and place on top of each other. Cut into 12 equal squares. Put the squares together in pairs on top of each other at a 45 degree angle (so they make a star shape). Press into the holes of a muffin tin or Yorkshire pudding tin. Bake in the oven for around 6/7 mins or until just golden brown and crisp (keep a close eye as they are so easy to burn!). Transfer to a baking tray. Chop the figs into small pieces and divide between the filo cups. Put the cheese, sage, lemon juice into a bowl. Mash down with a fork, season with black pepper, then spoon a small amount of the cheese

mixture on top of the fig. Sprinkle lightly with paprika. Bake in the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the cheese has just melted.

Apple “in and out” pudding Ingredients (1 apple per person) 4 evenly sized Bramley cooking apples 75g unsalted butter 75g soft brown sugar approx 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, approx half teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 175g plain flour, cold water, 3 eggs, pinch salt, 450ml full fat milk (more or less) Pre-heat oven to around 200oC or 190oC fan oven. Peel (or not) and core apples. Cream together the butter and sugar and add the nutmeg and cinnamon, or whichever spices you are using. Fill the centre of the apples with this mixture and place them in a large buttered oven-proof dish. It needs to be a deep dish so the batter can rise to almost cover the apples. Blend the flour and salt with a little cold water and then add the eggs and enough milk to make a thick creamy batter (slightly thicker than a Yorkshire pudding batter). Pour this over the apples and bake in your pre-heated oven for around 45 minutes, until the apples are soft and oozy and the batter is risen. It should have a golden crisp surface and a soft centre. Serve immediately, with custard or cream. But beware, it will be

extremely hot!

These are part of the Happy Hour deal. About to pop after two very generous courses, we ordered ice cream for dessert. The kids ordered fluffwich soldiers and chocolate dip. Council to offer ‘life changing’ grants of up to 30k for disabled needing help in their homes Gedling Borough Council has received funding from the Government to provide grants for residents which can cover the costs of property adaptations. The grants will help those with disabilities to remain living independently at home and give financial support to make this possible. Grant money could go towards ramps, widening doors, adapting or providing suitable washing/bathing or toilet facilities, installing a stair lift or a ‘through the floor’ lift. The grants are means tested - applicants need to be referred to Gedling Borough Council from an Occupational Therapist who will assess the individual’s needs, then the council decides if they qualify. The maximum grant available is £30,000 and residents living in rented properties would require the owner’s permission for any works to be carried out. John Byrne, a resident who had bathroom adaptations and a stair lift fitted through the funding said; “The Occupational Therapist was brilliant and the process only took three months from start to finish. I couldn’t fault the process, it has changed my life and I’d recommend anyone else with a disability to see if they’d qualify.” Residents who feel they would qualify for a grant should contact Nottinghamshire County Council’s Occupational Therapists on 0300 500 80 80 for a referral.

Celebration of 100 years of women getting the vote can you help gather together information on Florence Paton MP? In 2018, it will be 100 years since women got the vote – although in 1918 they did have to be 30 years old to do so – lowered in 1928 to the age of 21. As part of events to commemorate women voting for the first time, researchers in Westminster are seeking more information on the country’s female MPs. The Representation of the People Act 1918 allowed women to stand as parliamentary candidates and one of the first was Florence Paton, who held the Rushcliffe seat between 1945 and 1950. The seat included Netherfield and Carlton – before a series of boundary changes created the Gedling seat held by Vernon Coaker. Mrs Paton was born in Somerset and worked as a school teacher in Wolverhampton, and was a Methodist Lay Preacher, before contesting her first

election in 1928. She had a number of unsuccessful attempts at becoming an MP, eventually taking a seat as Labour Member for Rushcliffe (but not on current boundaries) shortly after the end of the Second World War. She served the constituency between 1945 and 1950. Vernon Coaker, current MP for Gedling, is seeking any information local people may have on Florence and her family. He is supporting the work being done by researchers working for Hansard – the official record of parliament – to gather together information on the lives and work of women MPs. If you know anything at all about Florence Paton, please email vernon. coaker.mp@parliament.uk or directly to Hansard at cainem@parliament.uk

National Adoption Week This year’s National Adoption Week will take place from 17-23 October. The hashtag #SupportAdoption is the theme behind this year’s event. This is in recognition of the many people whose lives or hearts have been touched by adoption. Family Care are a local adoption agency who recognise the impact that adoption can have on people’s lives. As a voluntary adoption agency and children’s charity they have been working to support children and families across the region for 130 years. They believe supporting their adoptive families is important at every stage of their journey, which is why they offer lifelong support to anyone who adopts through them.

If you are considering adopting, Family Care offer regular Adoption Information Evenings which offer a gentle introduction to adoption and the chance to meet members of their team, hear their adopters’ story and ask any questions you might have in a relaxed and informal setting. The remaining Adoption Information Evenings in 2016 will be held on the following dates: 25 October 29 November These will take place at their offices from 7-9pm: 28 Magdala Road, Mapperley Park, Nottingham NG3 5DF. If you are wanting to attend you can register your interest with Laura Mynett via email: laura.mynett@ familycare-nottingham.org.uk or call on 0115 960 3010. Advice on Ticks and Fleas This year we have seen an explosion of tick and flea activity, I suspect mainly due to the perfect storm of mild conditions over the last few years and then the ideal insect conditions we have had so far over the spring and summer. Virtually all dogs, cats and rabbits will be exposed to fleas and ticks at some stage in their lives and it is always the best policy to protect them from a flea or tick infestation throughout the year by using an effective and safe treatment. Recently their has been reports in the press of the increased risks of tick borne diseases such as babesiosis, thankfully the risks to our pets are relatively rare but we are best to be cautious. Ticks themselves are horrible creatures and if your pet picks one up it is important to remove them safely, using the correct tool and procedure. It is best to get advice from your vet if you are at all unsure.

Generally you are best to discuss what works best for your pets with your Vet, as they have access to the most up to date and effective treatments. Remember it is important to treat all the pets in the house and to treat them as per the instructions. Always treat your pets for fleas and ticks all the year round not just in summer. We also recommend treating the house itself with an effective spray to stop the build up of flea larvae and eggs which continue to reinfect. Always worm your dogs and cats as well, as fleas are the major source of tapeworms. Remember prevention is always better than treatment.

There are a bewildering number of flea and tick products on the market to use on your pets and some are much more effective than others.

pets Second time lucky?

This month, Tilly dog and Venus cat are asking for homes. Sadly, this is Tilly’s second appeal: she was adopted last year from Animal Accident Rescue into a loving home, but family health problems mean she was returned to the charity. Previously attacked by dogs, she is happiest being the only dog with no children, but is used to chickens, cats and horses! At 8 years, this gentle Collie-x-Whippet needs an experienced owner to continue building her confidence. Gentle too, is 9-month old Venus – with fantastic fur and matching personality, she loves humans and plays hide-and-seek with her fosterer. She is happiest being an only cat in an adult household. Both are wormed, flea-treated, spayed, micro-chipped, house/litter-trained, currently vaccinated – with Venus “snap” FIV/FeLV blood-tested (clear). To discover more on Tilly, contact the Dog Adoption Officer on 07511-891989; for Venus contact the Cat Adoption Officer on 0115-9985063 after 6pm. Neither number must be used for any other purpose – or email the relevant volunteer at admin@aaru. org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck, with no cat-rehoming on or near busy roads. Totally reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat and dog fosterers. It does not deal with healthy strays/ unwanted pets; but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all animals needing homes visit www.animalaccident. org.uk.

Small Fundraiser Big Heart

Little Libby from Arnold recently presented the charity Guide Dogs with a cheque for £30 after taking the initiative to organise her own fundraising activities after seeing an article on the charity in ng magazines. The eight year old raised the funds by baking cakes, organising a cake sale and selling cakes to her neighbours. Once a year Libby does a cake sale for charity and her brother Jack displays his Thomas the tank engine collection to the neighbours. Libby’s mum, Carol, said: “We are very lucky to live in a community where everyone is very supportive of each other. Libby loves baking and her favourite bake is her chocolate cake. Although the banana and raisin loaf sold the best at this year’s cake sale.” Guide dog owner David Newsham and his guide dog Elliot collected the cheque from Libby, thanking her for her support and letting her know how the money she raised will help make a difference to someone with sight loss. If you would like to find out how you can fundraise for Guide Dogs please contact the local Guide Dogs team on nottingham@guidedogs.org.uk or 0845 372 7424 or visit www.guidedogs.org. uk

If you are looking to review exisiting Investments or Pensions or indeed looking to make new Investments for income/growth or both, I would be happy to help. It is crucial in today’s uncert ain financial climate that you regularly review your financial arrangements. Formerly employed by Lloyds Bank for 32 years I specialise in life and critical illness cover for individuals and businesses. I am able to review existing arrangements and in most cases I am able to save you money and/or increase your level of protection. Land Your Dream Job Through Social Media Research has revealed that making smart use of social media could improve your chances of landing that dream job. Why don’t job hunters use social media more? It could be the case that people are scared of using social media to find new positions, network and sell their skills to potential employers, because they are worried about making the wrong impression. However, if personal and professional use of social networks are kept separate, and users always share and post with their professional image in mind, job hunters can enjoy very positive results from being a pro-active social media user. Tips for job hunting via social media It’s important to remember that many employers are actively looking for people who have skills that can help their businesses in the future, as well as now. If you can demonstrate successfully techniques for promoting yourself and your skills using social media, this shows businesses that you can promote them too. Here are some top tips for job hunting via social media: • Make LinkedIn your priority. There are certainly opportunities for self-promotion on other platforms, but this professional social network is a very good place to focus most of your attention. • Post interesting, valuable content. In order to impress, and to avoid being too repetitive or desperate-sounding in your self-promotion, demonstrate that you have your finger on the pulse of your industry by providing your target employers with interesting, valuable content that they actually want to read. • Engage with your potential employers. If there’s a company you really want to work with, start to engage with them on networks like Twitter beforehand – your interest could make all the difference if you manage to get an interview. • Clean up your personal profiles. It’s good to show yourself as a well-rounded candidate with both a personal and professional online presence, but if there’s anything you’d rather not be judged on, remove it before you start your job hunt.

Council submits plans for £1.2 million Heritage Centre in Gedling Country Park Plans for a new heritage and cultural visitors centre in Gedling Country Park have been submitted by Gedling Borough Council. The proposals for the £1.2 million centre will incorporate the park’s mining history alongside a modern café and outdoor seating area. The design for the centre was inspired by work undertaken by students from Nottingham Trent University, who worked with the Leader of the Council, Councillor John Clarke and the council’s Parks Team on potential design ideas earlier in the year. The final design was produced by Allan Joyce Architects. The centre developments coincide with the start of the build of the new £120,000 children’s play area in the park which began earlier this month. The new play area, designed by Proludic, will incorporate the park’s mining heritage with a rustic mining tower, mining train and ‘old pit’ grasslands ensuring the history of the park is remembered for years to come. The park is being part-funded by the council who are providing £70,000 alongside a grant from WREN’S FCC Community Action Fund, who will provide £50,000 after a successful bid for funding by the Friends of Gedling Country Park group.

Belmores Pavilion Theatre by Bob Massey

Before 1911, Arnold had no proper theatres or music halls so travelling into Nottingham was the only way most people had of seeing a “professional live show. Every September, the Arnold Wakes provided a more local entertainment but this was only once a year. One other travelling amusement visited the town from time to time, that was the portable theatre. Fit Ups, as they were known, became all the rage during the 1800s. Their shows ranged from melodramas to condensed classics and included ballet, circus, comedy and children’s acts as well as magic acts and waxworks and of course pantomimes. The standard of these portable theatres varied considerably from the very professional to the down right awful. In areas like Arnold portable theatres were very popular as they could be dismantled and moved easily, setting up on some spare ground. They moved about using wagons with all the props, scenery, costumes and the theatre itself packed together. The owner may well have had a living van but the performers would stay at an inn or lodgings in the town or village. The company usually consisted of the owner and his family with a few extras employed for each season. As the income was dependent on the money raised at the entrance, a bad show could mean the end of the road. One of these fit ups, that entertained the people of Arnold from at least 1887, was

the Belmore Pavilion Theatre. They would usually arrive about the start of June, and remain until the wakes. The members of this company did receive a small salary, unlike most of the others, as well as their share of the box office takings. This show appears to have been of a better standard than many of the other travelling shows. The stage had a wooden, rather than canvas roof, and a more substantial structure than the tents used by most companies. Charles Belmore-Clifford was born in London in 1841. He had started as a member of the Ewers Theatre company, another travelling theatre, in the 1860s. He then left to form his own company with his wife Elizabeth and mother-in-law Mary Ann Cooke, both fellow actors. The Belmores had two daughters, Phillis born 1873 and then Phoebe who also became an actress in the company. They staged farces, melodramas and sometimes more serious pieces. Very often different shows each night, similar to the seaside shows on the piers in the 1950 and 60s. Belmore also staged comedy shows for the children where sweets were thrown to the audience. Always a good crowd puller. He was successful and was always advertising for new acts in the Stage newspaper around the country. Many of the artists who started in his company went on to join the legitimate theatre and had successful careers. Belmores continued visiting Arnold until about 1910. Charles Belmore died in Mansfield in 1917. One famous visitor to Belmores was D.H Lawrence who went to this theatre in 1903. He used this experience as the theme in two of his books describing the perilous existence of these travelling shows.

I am researching the history of Arnold and would be very pleased to hear from anyone with more details or information. Email: bob.m.massey@gmail.com or post via NG5 magazine.

Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your health instead With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. We asked Nottingham based nutritionist, Eva Humphries, to give us the low down on what you can expect from a nutritional therapy consultation.

Don’t expect a diet plan

comprehensive assessment of your relative requirements are made so the advice given is completely unique to you. Your digestive health, energy levels, hormones and eating habits are all considered alongside any symptoms you may be presenting with. This may sound like a lot of data but in reality you just get to spend an hour talking about yourself.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

Evidence based science

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

What can nutritional therapy help with?

It’s personal There is another huge issue with diet plans: they don’t take into account individual requirements. During a nutritional therapy consultation, a

Qualified nutritional therapists will look for the clinical research to support your health goals. This nerdy data, is the real scientific evidence that underpins each recommendation made. So, if we tell you to eat two more portions of green veg a day, be sure to know there is a research paper to back up that recommendation.

Nutritional therapy is about upgrading your overall health. Energy, digestive and skin health, as well as cognitive function may all be improved with the help of a qualified nutritional therapist.

Eva Humphries is a Nottingham based nutritionist, founder of Wholefood Warrior and appreciator of good food. Eva holds health and wellbeing talks on topics including the basics of nutrition, improving energy and detoxing. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk for more information.

Summer Success

ARNOLD SWIMMING CLUB NEWS

The last competition of the summer, the Notts ASA Summer Gala at Harvey Hadden Sports Village on 16/17 July, brought a worthy end to a glorious season. Impressive swims from Arnold swimmers resulted in 68 new personal best times as well as a very impressive 26 new club records, together with a haul of medals: 4 Gold medals: Sam Williams x 2, Lily Jackson-Oates x 2, Morgan Green x 1 and Oliver Silver x 1 8 Silver medals: Sam Williams x 2, Oliver Silver x 2, 1 each to Alfie Silver, Amaia Steele, Bethany Easton and Ellie Blakey 8 Bronze medals: Ellie Blakey x 3, Alfie Silver x 2, 1 each to Bethany Easton, Oliver Silver and Lily Jackson-Oates

Sponsored Swim July – usually a quieter time but nevertheless Arnold SC swimmers took up the challenge to engage in a Sponsored Charity Swim. The challenge - to swim collectively 1 Million Metres over a 2 week period – the result a staggering successful 1 Million and 63,000 Metres! Congratulations to all club swimmers and many thanks to our sponsors who raised just over £300 for the Club’s Charities.

Club Championships 2016 The competitive focus now turns to the Club’s internal Championships. This competition allows individuals to update their personal best times and compete for awards within their own age groups as well as individual strokes. Some swimmers will also have the opportunity to achieve qualifying times for Midland Short Course in November 2016 and the Nottinghamshire County Championships in early 2017. MUSICAL

If you are involved in a choir, singing group or band then we would love to hear from you. Every month, space permitting, we will include the latest news, concert information and forthcoming events. You just need to email us at: ali@ngmagazines.org.uk by the first Friday of the month.

WOODTHORPE SINGERS CORRECTION... In the last edition we announced the retirement of Marjorie Rogers. To clarify, Marjorie is not retiring and will continue with choir work and piano tuition. Marjorie has a few slots available at the moment. For more information please call 0115 931 3965.

Gem Connection have been out and

about during the summer months with their very popular Teddy Stalls raising funds which help towards the purchasing and legalising of their music and the specialist coaching they receive throughout the year. October rehearsals will be intense, polishing up the package they will be taking to Harrogate where they will be competing in the Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers (L.A.B.B.S.) National Competition at the end of October. The ladies are holding an Open Rehearsal Night on Thursday October 20th and would love to perform to an audience. The evening is free to friends, families and anyone who would just like to come along for a cup of tea and to listen, give encouragement and have a good night of entertainment. The evening will be open to visitors from 7.45pm, meeting at The Harrington Middle School, Derby Road, Long Eaton. The Gem’s would love to see you there.

Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir have had an extremely busy year, with some excellent concerts already under their belts, including a joint concert with Beaufort Male Choir, that was a sell-out three weeks before the event!. They are already planning their centenary celebrations (starting 2019) but their main focus right now is their early autumn performances.

On October 8th, they are delighted to join with one of the youngest choirs in the area, the Rock & Soul Singers, based in Underwood (at Underwood Church). What a night that promises to be – an Octoberfest of song! Later that month, they will be joining Ilkeston Brass at the United Reform Church, Ilkeston for what has become an annual event – Saturday 29 October at 7.30pm. November is a quiet month as they prepare for the Christmas period.

Visit the web site at www.ecmvc.org – and come along and give them a try – new members always welcome! And if you are a Facebook user, search for ‘ECMVC’ and take a look at the frequent news updates.

Christmas starts here with the Lace City Chorus annual Christmas Show. 4pm Sunday 18th December 2016 at the

Albert Hall, North Circus Street Nottingham NG1 5AA

Special guests, East Bridgford Children's Choir, and Newstead Brass Band Ticket price £12-Adults, £8-Children 14 and under Tickets available from www.lacecitychorus.org and from Tourist Information Centre 4 Smithy Row Nottingham NG1 2BY

Bring a touch of the tropical to your garden Canna Lilies – A garden essential! Canna Lilies are stand out performers in the garden. Available from garden centres and supermarkets they bring a touch of the tropical to your plot. These exotic beauties have lush bold flowers and their patterned leaves are architecturally stunning. Despite appearances however they are surprisingly easy to grow. Follow my tips to ensure you keep them flowering till the frosts and bursting back into bud next summer.

Get maximum blooms Cannas are happy in flower beds or pots but they always seem to perform at their best as the showy centre piece of a container display. Never deadhead them. The new flowering stem comes up through the old flower so keep your secateurs sheathed to ensure the longest flowering period. Despite their tropical appearance Cannas grow best in semi to full shade. Bright sun causes the vibrant colours in their leaves and

flowers to fade. This makes Cannas your ideal choice to brighten up a shady corner. They tolerate drought conditions. Growth is lusher and denser when grown in moist environments but they still perform brilliantly when things get a little dry. This combined with the fact they don’t need deadheading means they are the perfect flower if you are planning a few weeks away over the summer.

Winter care Lift the Canna rhizomes after the first frost. Pop them into pots and cover with compost. Keep the pots in a shed or garage over winter ensuring the soil stays slightly moist. Plants will start to send out shoots in Spring. As soon as these shoots are visible move the pots into a frost free greenhouse or porch. Once any fear of frost is passed the Cannas can go back into your garden.

Cannas are hot, exotic, tropical and easy to grow.

The Annual Club Dinner later that month was well attended and very enjoyable as always. Our final responsibility was creating a number of fabulous displays for the Holme Pierrepont Flower Show. kids Students Get First Peek At Their £14 Million New School Building

New Primary Academy opens in Burntstump, Arnold

Students at Arnold Hill Academy have been getting a sneak peek at their brand new £14 million school building, which looks set to become the blueprint for new school builds around the country.

Set in idyllic surroundings Burntstump Seely Church of England Primary Academy opened its doors in September with a new head teacher and new management team running the school.

Arnold Hill is the first school to get the latest state-of the-art “super block” design – a 3-storey square building with a 4-court indoor sports hall, 380-person capacity theatre forming its centre and classrooms wrapped around. Built by Wates Construction, the cutting edge building is being described as the first of a generation, and the government are now considering making it the recommended design for all new school building projects. Pupils at the school were given their own tour inside the newly finished block, and there were gasps of delight as they explored its impressive facilities, which also include a dance studio, a recording studio, ICT rooms, food rooms and art rooms. Annabelle Carter, aged 12, said: “Wow, it’s amazing. The dance studio is like you see on the films with all the mirrors, like a proper dance school. It’s great to have so much new equipment. We’re going to be buzzing coming to school now, knowing we can use all this.” The 8000m2 building, which has been funded by the government’s Education Funding Agency (EFA), marks an exciting new era for the 1700 pupil school and it will also be a valuable resource for the local community.

108

Formally Arnold Seely C of E School, Burntstump Seely Church of England Primary Academy is, says new Head teacher Heather Gabb, a hidden gem. “Burntstump is a very special school because of its wonderful family atmosphere and beautiful setting. Although we are so near the A60 and A614, it feels as though the school is in the middle of the countryside.” Heather says that the Christian ethos at the school means that it is an encouraging and supportive environment. The original school was gifted to the community by the Seely Family of Sherwood Lodge (now Nottinghamshire Police headquarters) in 1902 and will now operate within the Diocese of Southwell & Nottinghamshire MultiAcademy Trust (SNMAT). Mr Chris Moodie, Chief Executive Officer at the Trust said that the school will now be able to work in partnership with other Academies within the Trust, strengthening impact on educational outcomes for children and accelerating learning. The Burntstump Seely Church of England Primary Academy will offer 4-11 education. To arrange a visit please call during term time on 0115 963 2833.

kids Eddie in the Flo for Olympic Glory

Skateboarding prodigy, Eddie Lowe (7) from Arnold is being tipped by FLO skatepark to be a future Olympic champion. The brave seven year old skateboarder has made a remarkable improvement since taking up skateboarding at Christmas and is already pulling off tricks that most experienced skaters can only dream of completing. After his first skateboarding lessons, Eddie was instantly hooked. He has loved learning the adrenaline fuelled tricks and is a fearless learner. If he wants to learn a new trick, he will keep on going until he’s mastered the skill. It can take months of practice and many bruises along the way before a trick can be mastered. However, young Eddie is so determined and will never give up until he has achieved his goal. The Arnold Mill pupil’s favourite trick is dropping down giant vert ramps and completing 180 degree turns in the air. It is a really exciting time for the sport because skateboarding will now be part of the Olympics in 2020. This will inspire a new generation and FLO wants to be part of that journey. Nottingham has some outstanding outdoor skate parks and has a giant indoor facility that has ambitions to become a world class hub for skaters, BMX’s and scooters. Eddie’s dream is to be like his hero Tony Hawks and to one day be part of Olympic Skateboarding.

eview: R d a u q S e Suicid e e Madhous h t o t e m o Welc The story of Suicide Squad sees the worst residents of the DC Universe’s prisons get drafted for a super covert team capable of taking down the baddies that ordinary men and women just can’t. The main strength of this film is its characterisation of some of the most popular and some of the most obscure DC characters that are for the most part making their big screen debut. As an avid fan of DC comics, it was a great pleasure seeing these unsung heroes/villains brought to life for the first time. Almost every character was brought to life brilliantly in this film. No matter how much screen time they got, what was apparent from the offset was the fantastic talent and thought put into how the actor approached the character and the amazing visuals used to bring them to life, whether it be in their costume design, or the realisation of their abilities, each character resembled their comic counterparts fantastically and made me feel like I was watching a comic on a very big screen. And while the plot is rather basic; a simple get her, grab that, destroy that and bobs your uncle the world is saved kinda deal, where the movie shines is seeing these characters not only meet and bounce off each others quirky personalities but also the emerging bond between them. Seeing how each individual relationship, especially between Deadshot and Harley Quinn, evolves and brings out new aspects of the characters was really fun and interesting to watch and just made me want to spend even more time with these deranged characters. While most characters are realised beautifully in this film, a good portion of them were criminally short-changed too. With such a huge cast to be introducing to an unsuspecting public, it is expected that some characters would get lost and severely relegated. One of the main antagonists of the film isn’t even given a name. Another section of the movie that was just a bit off was the rapid and unforgiving pace of the first third of the film. Scene changes barely gave me enough time to adjust before being hurdled into another situation leaving me with a

severe

case of whiplash. While the fast pace was very much in line with the chaotic tone of this film, in the beginning it was a bit too much and made the film feel choppy. On the whole, the action was an exhilarating explosion of badass fury, with the clear standouts being Harley’s ferocious power on the battlefield and Deadshot’s amazing impression of Rambo on steroids that made one of the early fight scenes the highlight of the whole film. Overall this film was bags of fun. Seeing these characters on the big screen was not only a pleasure to see, but I also left the movie wanting to spend more time with them. This wasn’t a mind blowing event like Civil War but it was a solid addition to the genre that, while it did have it’s fair share of problems, was a great experience. O

n Sunday 10th July we arrived at Go Ape in Sherwood Pines Forest Park for our tree climbing, swinging and Zip Trekking Adventure. I took the family along, grandad, dad and two teenagers – all of whom should feel at home swinging through the trees. Our day started with a safety briefing, being strapped into a climbing style harness and then practising using the safety equipment, clipping onto the safety lines and swapping from one obstacle to another. After this we were set free to traverse the course by ourselves. We climbed a ladder up into the tree tops and then decided which out of two paths to take. The tree top trails involve swinging into giant cargo nets, crawling through barrel type tunnels, edging along tightrope wires, stepping across wooden slats, and much, much more. My favourite and worst moment was swinging across into a cargo net after dropping a few feet first. This was great for someone like me, who was determined to fight my fear of heights and have a great day with the family.

The whole adventure start to finish lasted around 3 hours and even though the site itself was busy we hardly ever got held up. All in all a fantastic day out with lots of laughs and monkeying around. A Baboon (10-15 years) costs £25 and a Gorilla (16 years +) costs £33. Go Ape was dreamed up by Tris and Becs back in 2001 while on holiday in France with their six month old baby. They came across a French family swinging through the trees and when they saw how much fun they were having came up with the idea of Go Ape. Since then they have built 30 courses all across the UK and have also added Segway experiences, Tree Top Junior Adventures and at one site a zip wire adventure. Lucky for us the Sherwood Pines location has the Tree Top Adventure for 10 years and above, the Tree Top Junior for 6-10 years, and the Forest Segway. DEADLINE 31ST OCTOBER

Home Grown Olympic Talent Shines 5,812 That’s the number of miles from Nottingham to

Rio de Janeiro. A total of 24 athletes made the trip from the East Midlands competing in various events from equestrian to table tennis. Here are five atheletes that impressed at this year’s games.

Michael Whitaker – Equestrian

Chris Adcock – Badminton Competing at the Olympics from the age of 24 in Los Angeles, Michael’s equestrian achievements include a Team Gold medal and individual Silver medal at the European Championships in 1989. Whitaker’s game regrettably ended due to his horse Cassionato showing symptoms of colic. Despite this, Michael did manage to come 12th in the team jumping finals, and finished 8th in the individual qualifiers. Going into the Olympics, Chris had already claimed a mixed doubles gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with his wife Gabby, and went into the games with high hopes of collecting a medal. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old from Ravenshead crashed out to Polish opponents Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba. Adcock is expecting to compete at Tokyo in 2020, with the ambition of reaching a final. Helen Richardson-Walsh – Hockey

Sam Walker – Table Tennis Sam’s journey to Rio began at just two years old, his dad using a piano stool to allow him to see the table tennis table. Just 3 months prior to the games, Walker was part of the England team that picked up Bronze at the World Team Championships in Malaysia. That success continued into Rio, Sam and his team (Drinkhall and Pitchford) breezing past first round opponents France before losing 3-0 against eventual gold medallists China. Worksop-born Walker will have his sights firmly set on Tokyo 2020 to put some wrongs right. Molly Renshaw – Swimming

Although not born in Nottingham, Helen spent her childhood in the NG area, playing for West Bridgford and Sherwood Hockey Clubs before joining Leicester Hockey Club and eventually earning her first England cap in 1999, age 17. A bronze in London 4 years ago was the perfect platform for Helen, and sister Kate (captain) to launch their 2016 medal bid. The squad had a rollercoaster journey to the final, before beating the Netherlands in a penalty shoot out to claim the team’s first ever Gold medal.

20-year-old Molly Renshaw competed in her first games this summer after agonisingly missing the qualifying time in 2012. Born in Mansfield, Renshaw set a new record of 2:22:33 while qualifying for the 200m breaststroke final. While Molly swam a superb semi-final, she struggled to keep up with Japanese champion Rie Kaneto, falling almost 3 seconds behind the leader, finishing 6th. A young athlete with plenty of talent, the future of British swimming looks bright.

Staying Safe Online... Nottinghamshire Police has issued a reminder to gamers to ‘stay safe online’ following the release of the Pokémon Go smartphone app in the UK.

making sure they know what apps their children are using, who they are speaking to online and where they may be travelling to use these apps.”

The app, which is currently the top grossing app on both the Apple and Android download charts, encourages gamers to discover in-game characters in the ‘real world’ using the location services on their smartphones.

Nottinghamshire Police is also asking gamers to be considerate towards others after officers were required to respond to a report of torchlight being spotted in the south Nottinghamshire village of Normanton-on-Soar in the early hours of Tuesday 12 July 2016.

Users travel to real world locations where Pokémon characters appear on-screen through their smartphones camera. Gamers can then attempt to ‘catch’ each character and battle other gamers in the real world to progress within the game. Detective Inspector Pete Quinn from Nottinghamshire Police said: “The risks that this app presents are not new or unique and, as with any other social media, there is always the potential to put yourself at risk by letting your guard down and coming into contact with people you don’t know – both online and in the real world.

Officers travelled on blue lights – their most urgent level of response – to investigate the report from worried residents where they discovered two teenage boys out searching for Pokémon. It was established that no offences had been committed. For more information and advice about helping you or your children to stay safe online, please visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at: www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice/prevention

“We are also appealing to parents to have an open and honest conversation with their children who may be using the app to remind them about the potential risks, as well as Special Constabulary Recruitment - Are you interested in becoming a Special Constable? To find out more about our prerecruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links
