Feeling Positive! Ok, so here is a very frequent question we are asked about general health, nutrition and fitness. ‘Why am I failing?’ Let me stop you there for one second... what is failure? Is it stalling weight loss? Is it not completing a fitness programme due to exhaustion? There are many reasons we put ourselves down due to what we think is failure. What we tend to forget is how far we have come. About this time of the year, the new year resolutions are being tested. Have you maintained a healthier diet? Really?? Or have you reverted back to old ways but justifying it now by regularly exercising? If this is the case then yes, falling back into old unhealthy eating habits is a negative step, but you are still dedicated to making healthy life choices. Exercising regularly is still a positive step forward therefore you are still going in the right direction. Yes, progress may be slow, or slower than expected, the scales may be stuck for a week or two, but this doesn’t mean you are failing. There are so so many factors, variables, causes and effects to take into account when it comes to a slowing momentum in achieving a goal you set out to accomplish at the start of your journey. Ask yourself, how many times have you moved the goal posts to achieve something better than you expected? Then you question yourself when results are slow, forgetting you have already achieved your original goal! When you work with a health coach, like myself, we take into account many variables and break them down to really get to understand the

person we are helping. One of our most successful clients came to us with a poor diet and heavy social life that lead to an unhealthy lifestyle and sadly brought on painful dietary gout. Suffering in pain for too long, we got to work breaking down his lifestyle choices and establilshing some new routines. After six months working closely with us, this guy managed to alter his daily diet which in turn meant altering his social habits. We educated him on the cause and effect of choices that he was making and got him physically active by working through a progressive training programme. To this day he is one of our hardest working clients and most importantly, has managed to reverse the dietary gout he suffered from. No longer in pain, with our support, he continues to be physically active and is able to lead a healthier life. Most of us measure our achievements on the number the scales show us. If it is down we praise ourselves, if it is up we punish ourselves and question our dedication. Try instead to focus more on how you feel. Do your clothes fit better? Are you stronger? More alert? Sleeping better? These are all signs of positive forward progression and improving health. Improving your health should be taken as a whole rather than focusing on one thing - like the numbers on the scales. Forget the one negative and count all the positives. Be positive, think positive, produce a positive outcome.

a helping hand

Enjoy a ‘happiness trial’ with the Oddfellows local friendship society. Nottingham Oddfellows has shared its top five tips for feeling happier in later life. Said Karen Pye-Smith: “We’ve more than 200 years’ experience in helping people to get more out of life and to form lasting friendships, so we thought we’d share a little of what we’ve learnt along the way.” 1. Keep your brain busy. Challenge yourself with crosswords, start a course, catch a talk or play, or write a letter. 2. Help others. Not only does volunteering encourage you to mix socially, it can supercharge self-confidence, self-esteem and life satisfaction. 3. Join a local club or society. More often than not, regular contact with those who share a common interest or hobby will result in meaningful friendships. 4. Get physical. There are so many rewards to regular exercise aside from keeping trim. It reduces many cardiovascular risks, including high blood pressure and heart disease. It also gives your mental health a boost, helping combat stress, anxiety and depression. 5. Seize the day! Society research revealed that one of the benefits to retirement was being able to shop during less busy hours and not having to leave household chores to the weekend. By using time more wisely, you can do more of what you love – including steps one to four! In addition to running social events throughout the year, Nottingham Oddfellows offers volunteering opportunities and care and welfare support to members who may feel lonely, unwell or who are facing other difficulties. For information on how to get involved, call Karen Pye-Smith on 01949 843727 or 07921821866 or email karen.pye-smith@ oddfellows.co.uk.

The Recovery from Separation & Divorce course gives help and support, as well as practical tools, to get through your relationship breakdown and divorce. It is a safe, non-judgmental environment to meet others who are in the same situation, which allows discussions and questions whilst grappling with important issues. The course has been developed by divorcees with different specialties: a judge, solicitors, communications experts, counsellors, family life experts, and mediation advisers. It has been helping thousands of people recover from relationship breakdown. All the people that run and help with the course have been through divorce and separation themselves and have a passion to help others recover completely from the impact that relationship breakdown brings. Although the RSD course is run in a church building in the city centre, it is specifically designed for people who may not go to church or who do not want to discuss faith issues. The setting is welcoming, relaxed and unthreatening. What others have said after being on this course:“I now feel less like a failure, less like a social pariah and less as if I have let myself and others down”. “I wish I’d come on this course before now”. “I’m excited about finding myself, investing in and nurturing the relationships that matter to me”. The courses run over an eight week period. They ask for a small donation of £30 towards refreshments and materials, however bursaries are available for people under financial pressure. If you would like more information please contact Judy Collinge on 0115 779 1315 or email: judy.collinge@ gracechurchnottingham.org or visit the website: www.gracechurchnottingham.org/ rsd

Chocolate Treats Most of us love chocolate, eating it, cooking with it, drinking it. But did you know that people have been enjoying chocolate for over 4000 years? Archeologists have found evidence that ancient cultures living in present-day Mexico as early as 1900BC consumed a bitter drink cultivated from cacao plants. It is even claimed that the 16th Century Aztec Emperor Montezuma drank around 3 gallons a day as he believed the bitter beverage to be an aphrodisiac! Chocolate spread (no pun intended!) to Europe through the Spanish conquistadors and when a Spanish Princess married King Louis XIII the popularity of chocolate continued through the royal courts.

It was still rare and expensive however and chocolate remained a treat only for the aristocracy until a Dutch chemist invented the cocoa press in 1828 enabling, for the first time, a dry powder to be extracted from the cacao beans that could then be used in confectionary. J S Fry & Sons produced the first solid chocolate bar in 1874 and we have never looked back, Lindt, Cadbury, Mars, Hershey are all now household names. Despite the availability and affordability of chocolate, it still remains a special treat, for a gift, for a delicious pudding, to celebrate Easter, birthdays, Valentine’s day or just to say “thank you”. If you fancy some special chocolate treats, try one of these simple recipes.

Abby Brennan is a café-owner, food writer, speaker and small/start-up food-business mentor. You can find her blog at fishwifeskitchen.com

Seriously Easy Chocolate Truffles This recipe makes a lot of Truffles (about 60), you can halve the ingredients if you prefer, or make loads, vary the flavourings and coatings and give as a special gift. 200g Cream Cheese, softened 350g icing sugar, sifted 500g plain chocolate (melted slowly in a heat-proof bowl over simmering hot water) 1 1/2 teaspoons of vanilla essence Beat cream cheese in a large bowl until smooth. Gradually beat in the icing sugar until fully blended. Stir in the melted chocolate and vanilla until no white streaks remain. Refrigerate for roughly about an hour and then shape into bite-sized balls. You can roll the truffles in ground nuts, desiccated coconut, icing sugar or chocolate sprinkles or you can omit the vanilla and add a flavoured liqueur such as coffee, orange or almond.

Mars Bar Mousse This makes a very rich mousse so serve in tiny portions! 2 full sized Mars Bars 50ml milk 4 tbsp cocoa powder 3 large egg whites mini chocolate eggs for decoration Carefully slice up the Mars Bars roughly into quarters, and put along with the milk and cocoa in a solid-based saucepan. Heat on a very low temperature, stirring constantly until all the chocolate has melted. Transfer to a bowl and leave to cool for about 15 minutes. Whisk this mixture frequently to ensure it remains blended and smooth. Whisk the egg whites in a separate, clean, dry bowl until softly peaking. Use a metal spoon to fold half the whites into the the chocolate sauce to lighten it, then fold in the remainder. Turn the mixture into about 8 small cups (or sherry glasses) and chill in the fridge for at least 2 hours before serving. Decorate with chocolate mini eggs or chocolate shavings

Chocolate Krispie Egg 175g milk chocolate, broken into pieces 50g Rice Krispies cereal Gently melt the chocolate pieces in a heatproof bowl over simmering water, or microwave on a low heat (checking regularly). Stir until smooth and then remove from the heat and stir in the Rice Krispies, mix well until until the Krispies are full coated with chocolate. Spoon the mix into one half of your egg mould and press down using the back of a metal spoon, make you sure you cover the whole mould but leave a deep dip in the middle and leave a thick edge. Cool in the fridge until set (15 mins or so). Once cool fill with mini chocolate eggs, chocolate buttons or other sweets of your choice, wrap in a pretty ribbon and give as a gift (or polish off yourself if you prefer!).

Situated in the heart of Nottingham, Revolucion de Cuba transports you straight to the heart of Havana. Located in a stunning building on Market Street, the cantina takes your breath away. With its high ceilings, shabby yet stylish interior and buzzing atmosphere the only thing missing was the 90 degree heat! Throughout our meal we were treated to live music from a great salsa band. We started our meal with pinchos (nibbles); crispy tortilla chips with homemade guacamole and fresh salsa. Our tapas plates were mouthwatering; patatas bravas, Cajun cream mushrooms, gambas pil pil (succulent king prawns tossed in butter, chilli, garlic and lime), pork belly skewers, chicken rumba skewers and honey roast veg. One member of our party went for the steak – cooked to perfection and served with a creamy rum sauce (of course!) We managed to share a mini dessert selection and a couple of cheeky cocktails. Gin served in a teapot was a first for me (bramble tea) and hot buttered rum hit the spot. After a meal, we headed upstairs where Salsa lessons had been held earlier. The atmosphere was

positively convivial! We were impressed with the dancing, it definitely felt like the streets of Havana rather than Nottingham. The upstairs bar also hosts Fiesta Friday!!! See their website for a run down of what they have to offer. Happy Hour with 2-4-1 cocktails is Monday to Saturday 5pm until 7pm, plus it is worth noting ‘Havana great time on Sunday’ where tapas, cocktails and coffee are 2-4-1. A great deal! Revolucion de Cuba really does have the WOW factor. Even the toilets are a talking point. Whether you're after the finest Cuban coffee, a full on Latin feast, classic cocktails or great live music, we've got it all at Revolucion de Cuba Nottingham.

Approx 2000 healthy animals are put to sleep every week in the UK Low cost speying & neutering schemes for pets available in the Nottingham area

Local author, Victoria Harwood, is keen to raise awareness around hedgehogs. The author, based in Nottingham, has written a number of books in a series called Bushhog tails and donates all profits to wildlife charities.

Helen@preventunwantedpets.co.uk reg charity: 702569

The population of hedgehogs has really declined in just a few years due to environmental changes and Victoria is appealing for us all to help. Hedgehogs will be coming out of hibernation In March. You can help by leaving some nice meaty cat food out for your little visitors with some fresh water. Or you can get some proper hedgehog food from most pet shops. It is important to always remember that hedgehogs are lactose intolerant so they must not have milk. They must not have bread either as this can swell their tiny stomachs and make them very sick. If neighbours agree, a tiny hole in the fence will allow the hedgehogs to roam freely from garden to garden in search for food.

Hedgehogs are nocturnal creatures so if you see one out in the daytime then it could be sick and might need urgent help. Contact http://www.britishhedgehogs.org.uk/ if you are worried about a hedgehog. They will give you the correct advice for helping it. Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!

With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing

“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.

10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

Dear neighbours... One of our aims here at Sherwood and Mapperley Park NHW is to develop our relationships with local businesses. We believe it is important to celebrate the hard work and success of our increasingly vibrant high street.

£695!

07736 391971

To celebrate this, at our last AGM we launched the first ‘Spirit of Sherwood’ award to recognise the important contribution local businesses make to our community. The first recipient of this award, voted by the members attending the AGM was ‘Eat Out’ of Mansfield Road run by Kate Kaur. The official citation congratulates Kate for running a Sherwood business ‘... that contributes to its community spirit, plays a full part in the life of the neighbourhood and provides a valuable service to the area.’ We were able to present Kate with her award in December and it is now proudly displayed in the shop for you to admire next time you’re in.

GRANGE curtains and blinds

This though, is just the beginning. We know that there are lots more businesses that deserve recognition and, with this in mind, we plan to extend the Awards this year with more categories and a public vote. Do you have a favourite shop, pub or restaurant which you feel deserves recognition? If so, please look out for our next article in NG5 and social media which will tell you how you can get involved.

We are also looking at attracting a sponsor for the awards so, if any individual or business would like to work with SAMPNW on this exciting project, we would be delighted to hear from you. In the meantime, a huge thanks to all those hardworking business owners who make the area such a vibrant place to shop, eat and drink. roundup

Gem Connection Ladies recently held a special rehearsal night to present a

cheque to The Teenage Cancer Trust which is based in Derby. Each year the ladies choose a charity and donate money in lieu of sending Christmas cards and also sing carols at the Navigation Inn in Breeston where the collection is boosted by the customers. The Gem’s would like to thank the staff and Customers from the Navigation Inn for the contributions made there during the night which helped raise £215. 00. for the trust. Gem Member Maralyn Wilkinson who volunteers at the Teenage Cancer Trust presented the £215. 00 cheque to Steph Grayson, the representative of the Trust who came along to receive the money. Gem Connections next big event is our show “CELEBRATE” which we are staging at the Long Eaton School in Long Eaton on Saturday April 23rd to celebrate our Bronze Medal which we gained from the National Convention in October 2015, also Our 18th Birthday in May and the 40th Anniversary of The Ladies Association of British Barbershop Singers. Following in May we have our Be a GEM For a Day event. Which is a workshop with the opportunity to sing with us and to learn the art of our wonderful hobby. All details for both events and more information about us are on our web site www.gemconnection.org or phone Maralyn on 01332 761394.

nt Review: a n e v e R e h T r for Leo a c s O n A y Finall When I saw Birdman I instantly fell in love with director Alejandro González Iñárritu’s style and unique use of camera that made the film into an experience to behold. When I heard that he had a new movie coming out with Leonardo DiCaprio as the lead I was already sold. The story for this film is actually kind of thin and more about the journey it puts its main characters mercilessly through. It tells the story of an 1820’s frontiersman out to revenge the death of his son. He must traverse a brutal and unforgiving frozen land full of warring factions and dangerous beasts, none of which are on his side. The first thing that stands out about this movie is just how phenomenal the acting is, with a stand out performance from Leonardo DiCaprio. Even as a man of little words, DiCaprio agonisingly portrays every torturous hit, every second of pain, both emotionally and physically. You can really feel it. His character takes you on the journey with him and if DiCaprio hadn’t already proved he was worthy of an Oscar, there can be no argument against it now. His performance was simply incredible. Alejandro González Iñárritu’s innovative and exciting use of camera and directing style is also fantastic. His fluid movement of the camera gives the action scenes great momentum as you are whisked across the battlefield as if you are a frontiersman scrambling from cover to cover. The use of unfaltering close ups also helps to develop the strong connection that is built between the characters, especially DiCaprio, and the audience. We really feel for the characters as they endure the harsh struggle brought on by this cold land. In the down time of this film Alejandro González Iñárritu knows how to get the most out of the already breath-taking scenery. His cinematography and use of the landscape was not only impressive but a marvel to see as we are treated to beautiful vista after vista whilst not losing sight of how dangerous and unforgiving this place is. While the film has it’s fair share if intense and brutal action set pieces there seemed to be double the amount of slow paced and honestly tedious

moments too. While the story obviously lends itself to lengthy periods where nothing really happens, as the characters long and arduous travels across land are depicted; there are only so many shots of DiCaprio looking painfully into the snowy distance I can take. If this movie was vastly cut down from its 150 minutes runtime it would have been a much more streamlined and enjoyable experience, instead of the slog it sadly felt like for most the time. Overall this movie has its fair share of unapologetically brutal and absorbingly intense, edge of the seat moments. I actively willed for both DiCaprio’s survival and victory. However it also has more than enough slow and boring sections that seem to drag and add nothing substantial to the plot. Thank goodness for the breathtaking cinematography and DiCaprio’s phenomenal acting. The Revenant = 7.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 18)
