Local Parks Among the Best in the UK Gedling Country Park and Arnot Hill Park continue to be recognised as two of the UK’s very best green spaces. Both parks have been recognised by the Green Flag Award Scheme as some of the very best in the world. Arnot Hill Park has retained the flag for the 12th year running and Gedling Country Park for the 3rd year in a row.

WWI ‘Tommies’ Unveiled In Park

New Heritage Nature Trail To Open At Gedling Country Park A new heritage nature trail, complete with handcrafted wooden sculptures and interactive booklet is now open.

Four Remembrance Tommy Soldiers figures were unveiled at Gedling Country Park in July as a tribute to men and women who died during WWI. This is part of Gedling Borough Council’s plans to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the end of the war. The six foot aluminium Tommies are believed to be the first to be installed in Nottinghamshire and will be a permanent fixture at the park. The Tommies were the brainchild of the There But Not There Campaign, an organisation who are supporting a number of armed forces charities by making the soldiers to raise money. The soldiers have been made by army veterans, employed by Royal British Legion Industries. The council has also announced plans that on Saturday 10 November at Arnot Hill Park from 11am, it will host a WWI commemorative event. On Remembrance Sunday, the council will be lighting beacons at Arnot Hill Park and Gedling Country Park and bells will be rung across the borough at 7.05pm.

24

The trail features eight 3ft wooden sculptures of the wildlife found across the park – a heron, badger, hedgehog, fox, rabbit, mole, pipistrelle bat and a green woodpecker. These were created by artist, Peter Leadbeater. Each carving will have information signs with facts about each animal set at wheelchair friendly height and interactive ‘rubbing plaques’ where children, using crayons, can create animal impressions in their booklets. The booklets will be available from Café 1899, along with crayons. The trail follows the ‘High Hazels’ accessible footpath, which is a 1.4km (0.87miles) wheelchair and pushchair friendly circular route.

Something inspiring, something fun and something which reawakens your powerful optimism and enthusiasm. You need a motivating goal, and it’s time to create a fresh one.

blast from the past is on the way. An old relationship is set to reignite this month, with some fiery ramifications. Passions will run high and you’ll feel totally absorbed by the unfolding events. he Wasp t d n a n a ws: Ant-m Bur tonRevie ur Friends O m o r F lp Little He After moon shattering battles, universe defying conflicts and armies of heroes versus the worst of the galaxy, what can Marvel do next to knock our nerdy-patterned socks off? How about a story about a guy and girl who can turn real small, on a quest to find a long lost mum? Honestly, sounds like a refreshing break. Ant-man and the Wasp picks up two years after Antman’s scene stealing cameo in Captain America Civil War, and follows some of the plot threads laid out by the first Ant-man. BUT, this movie takes place before the forever earth changing events of this summer’s box office ruling, Avengers Infinity War. Make sense? Good. Scott Lang’s (Paul Rudd) decision in Civil War has brought the full force of the law down upon his family and friends. Under house arrest, Lang hasn’t been able to be the incredibly shrinkable Ant-man since the fight in Germany. And because of said fight, creator of the size-manipulating technology, Hank Pym (Michael Douglas), and his kick ass daughter Hope (Evangeline Lilly) have been on the run from the police ever since. But when Scott remembers something from his time in the quantum realm that could point to the location of Hank’s wife, Scott is thrust back into the superhero lifestyle fraught with danger, impossible decisions, and awesome costumes. What a lifestyle to have. The star studded cast is charming and it’s a blast to get to see them bounce off each other in these ridiculously fun and energetic sequences. Rudd knocks it out of the park again on all fronts, as loving and conflicted father, as well as in-over-hishead superhero. Whether it’s for the laughs or feeling sorry for this guy just trying to do his best, the connection between the audience and Rudd is palpable. And fellow tiny-hero the Wasp is also a sensational hit. Acting as the straight-woman to Scott’s goofball, Hope’s character has come on leaps and bounds since the first Ant-man. Set up as one of Marvel’s more comedic franchises, it’s not surprising that this film will make you belly-laugh a good handful of times, but what

is surprising is how the emotional beats of this sequel land with a mighty boom. This film knows how to pull at your heart strings and make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside. However, there is one aspect of the film that doesn’t always amaze. The fight scenes leave a lot to be desired. They are confusing and it’s hard to keep track of what punch came from where and towards who. Overall, Ant-man and the Wasp is a nice little breather after the impossibly high stakes of Avengers Infinity War. A surprisingly emotional ride with a stellar cast that delivers a classic personal Marvel story, while surrounded by wacky 80s scifi and a cool concoction of powers; it may not be deciding the fate of a cinematic universe, but it’s still damn fun to watch. Antman and the Wasp = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

The Touring Tale I have always been a camper - although over the years we have ditched the tent for a white box on wheels. These days, understandably, the kids are reluctant to come. Sadly, teenage boys and the outdoor life don’t mix well in our household. I think the damage was done with one too many cub camps! In desperate need of a couple of days away, we decided to head off with just the dogs. I picked a site not too far away, it was adults only, so peace and quiet were guaranteed, right? As soon as we got there my heart sank. The rule an outdoor activity involving list was longer overnight stays away from than my arm and home in a shelter such as a tent everywhere there (or white box on wheels!!) were signs telling you what to do, or what not to do more precisely. This was camping on another level. In fact this wasn’t camping at all. This was touring. No tents here, thanks very much.

Camping; [kamp in] noun

The set ups some of our fellow tourers had were pretty impressive (if you like that sort of thing). Vases of plastic flowers adorned their awnings - and bloomers billowed majestically off their rotary washing lines. And since when did having your own fence become a thing? The whole place felt like a cross between the set of The Prisoner and a retirement home.

Don’t get me wrong, the facilities were 5 star. Actually, the toilets were the best on a site I have ever seen, but it was boring! Unless you wanted to discuss the latest edition of Practical Caravan or compare the literage of your water tanks forget it. To kill some time, we decided to go for a long walk around the fishing lakes with the pooches. Nowhere could you let them off the lead, which was frustrating for the dogs and us, but as ever, we made the best of it. Strolling along the side of one of the lakes, sun shining and at peace with the world, suddenly Herbie (remember the gusset munching maniac?) made a bolt for it. The lead flew out of my hand and the dog dived, four feet first, into the lake after a duck. Feathers flew and in the pandemonium that followed, Harry (normally a well behaved dog who doesn’t really like water) decided to dive in as well. As we fished them both out and quickly walked away from the crime scene, we could feel the eyes of twenty angry fishermen burning into our backs. I think we can safely say that such sites have a place in the world, but not for us. Although we may no longer be under canvas, in our hearts we are still campers. Campsites need kids. They need laughter, energy and noise. Luckily, prosecco and chocolate cake got us through, and on the last night we entered the pub quiz and came second, winning a tenner. Well, if you can’t beat them, join them!!! © Ali Wale

Cat Foster Homes

help still needed A local animal charity is still appealing for cat fosterers – can you help by offering a small, temporary space in your home? Animal Accident Rescue Unit has so many cats in its care, that fosterers are constantly needed. With no premises, all the rescued animals are fostered by the charity’s volunteers in their own homes. Sometimes, there are special cases – like dear Major Tom (pictured) who is permanently fostered by the charity for the rest of his life. He was likely a stray for years and, as a result, has several health issues. He has now however a good permanent home with fosterers, financed by the charity. This approach shows Animal Accident Rescue Unit’s lifelong commitment to animals in its care. For shorter term fostering, if you can offer a homely space and care for a cat or kitten until rehoming, the rescue would love to hear from you. Commonsense and some relevant experience are needed; fostered cats must be kept indoors for safety, and a pre-foster homecheck is always done. Plenty of practical support and advice, are given by the charity. If you live in or around Nottingham and are interested, please contact Animal Accident Rescue Unit on admin@aaru. org.uk, or leave a message with your details on 0115-9321555 and you will receive a reply as soon as possible. All animals waiting for permanent homes are at www.animalaccident.org.uk .

Win a fantastic family day out for up to 5 people at Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre! Up for grabs is an amazing day out for a family of 5 including a private ski lesson, 30 mins tubing, 5 viper slides, 4 toboggan rides & a hot meal in the Alpine Lodge. Swadlincote Ski & Snowboard Centre, which is in the heart of the National Forest, bustles with activity and has so much to offer. Not bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days. It was transformed by John Nike whose estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK. If you’re a budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you. Swadlincotes Cresta Toboggan Run didn’t disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. It is something I have always wanted to try since watching ‘Cool Runnings’ and boy was it fun. Age restrictions

apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own. Next we tried the Sno-tubes which are large inflatable rings that can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.) So much fun. There is also the viper slide which you ride down in an inflatable ring, this consists of a 70m slope full of twists and turns. On top of all this, Swadlincote also has the Alpine Lodge & Bar which overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the coffee lounge that overlooks the nursery slope. For more information on age restrictions please visit:

Fatherly Faux Pa 's - part 1 A friend of mine recently became a dad for the first time and once he climbed out of the bunker of paternity leave it really struck me how quickly time flies. It seems only yesterday that my two were babes in arms, dependant on us for everything when we were knee deep in nappies and onesie’s. It struck me how encountering a new parent is like watching a war movie. You know the scene, the new recruit joins up with his regiment on the front line for the first time full of optimism and youthful vigour, asking where the enemy is. He’s met with silence by the grizzled veterans, each with a five o’clock shadow you could light a match on. Between the silence someone takes a long drag on a cigarette and mutters: ‘kid, you don’t know nuthin’. And how could we know anything? There’s no instructions, just an industry of baby books and advice from friends and family. Not to mention the occasional unwanted insight from random people who think it’s great to tell you how to raise your child. So far, I think we’re doing okay. There’s been up’s and down’s. We’ve got plenty wrong and plenty right, and somehow we’re muddling through. I’ve noticed that we’ve made one fantastic faux pa year on year, which I will share should anyone need to take some unwanted advice. I was really looking forward to sharing some of my interests with my kids, where you create a strong bond that will define your relationship. Not in a pushy way, I’m not going to force my children to share my interests, but it happens through a sort of osmosis. In the last few years my son has variously liked Star Wars, Harry Potter, computer games, toy soldiers, football and now superheroes. This is great, I’m super happy about this. But what we forget every time is that ‘OH MY GOD, MY KIDS ARE OBSESSED!’ They never stop talking about a subject they’re into. Once they start you just have to grit your teeth and strap yourself in because they aren’t going to let this go for a while. On a long car journey talking about Star Wars? Good luck, you’re going to have to explain every plotline and character and then be told why you’re wrong by someone who thinks Jar Jar Binks is the funniest thing in the galaxy.

Planning on watching a football match? You might as well put it on mute for 90 minutes as the miniature John Motson pulls out stat after stat whilst telling you just what the problem with VAR is (even though you’re pretty sure he’s just repeating what Alan Shearer said at half-time). There isn’t a subject your kids can’t put you off. But it’s brilliant, funny and insightful to see how they absorb information and understand it whilst simultaneously having no social awareness of how annoying it can be. My favourite was when my son (not yet ten) calmly asked me why the sword Anduril was renamed after it was reforged from the shards of Narsil (an obvious question for all the dad’s who love The Lord of The Rings right?!). I had no response, so he kept asking. And kept asking. And. Kept. Asking. Until I lost the will to live. I was tempted to put him on a one way flight to New Zealand to ask Peter Jackson. So here’s my advice for new dad’s. Take advice from where you need it. Enjoy the ups, learn from the downs. And for God’s sake, don’t let your kids near your hobbies!

Edging into my forties, I’m a wrangler of two young children who are either going to keep me eternally young or drive me to an early grave. I’ll be sharing some of my experiences of parenthood and my terrible attempts at staying relevant!

Merchants Restaurant Truly Magical I had read great things and viewed fantastic pictures so I was dressed and ready for an evening at this boutique fine dining restaurant. I was not disappointed. We were greeted by the lovely staff who showed us to a table in the very stylish Saint Bar with its beautiful feature marble bar. Our Pornstar Martini and Strawberry Bellini cocktails looked stunning and tasted even better, what a great way to start the evening! Once seated in the very elegant restaurant we were served an amuse bouche which is compliments of the Chef for all diners. It included an amazing Watermelon Yoghurt Drink, Crispy Ham Hock with Lovage Emulsion and Steamed Buns with Cod Roe Emulsion. This was then followed by some delicious homemade treacle bread and yoghurt butter. Superb. We were made to feel right at home by the fantastic Maitre D’ who chatted through the menu and explained the intriguing dishes to us. The menu is divided into ‘The Beginning’, ‘The Middle’ and ‘The End’ and is a reflection of head chef Luke Holland's memories which include those of his late grandpa, Ivor who was a big influence in his life, as well as time spent in the Royal Marines where he first learnt his trade. Created with a focus on using fresh, seasonal and local produce, Luke says “I can see the lamb from my bedroom window”. It's also amazing value as prices start from £32 for 3 courses. To begin I chose the Isle of Skye Langoustine, Chrysanthemum| Carrot | Caper. A truly magical blend of flavours, beautifully presented and a real treat to behold. For the middle course it had to be Hogget, Fermented Turnip| Broccoli

| Mint, a delicious melt in the mouth lamb rump served with the best crackling I have ever tasted. To end my meal it could be none other than the 80% Madagascan Chocolate Cocoa Nib, Granola | Mango | Lime. The chocolate mousse when mixed with the mango, coconut and lime created an explosion of different flavours that just worked and for a chocoholic like me, it was heaven. Stand out dishes for my dining party included the Holstein Friesian Beef, Barbecued Celeriac | Mustard | Shallot “a mouth-watering dish which is served raw but tastes like it's been barbecued”. North Sea Cod (middle) “a delicate blend of flavours which are given character when eaten with the 36 month old parmesan, wow!”. Sweet Pea – 2016 (end) “Luke has created a taste that is out of this world – so memorable”. All round a fantastic experience that I can highly recommend to anyone and everyone.

LET’S GO BANANAS! A

bbey, aka the Fishwife’s Kitchen, is having a well earned break and I am stepping up to the plate for this edition. While sitting racking my brain about what to cook, there was a fruit bowl with a bunch of very ripe bananas staring at me. Bingo! I don’t know about you, but my kids refuse to eat them unless they are bright yellow and blemish free. So we usually end up with some stragglers, especially in the tropical weather we have been enjoying. Bananas are high in potassium and a rich source of carbohydrate and they are a fruit

bowl staple for most of us so it is useful to have a few tried and tested recipes up your sleeve for those over ripe ones! You can peel and freeze bananas and use them in smoothies. Another great idea for a quick pudding is to make a slit through the skin and flesh on one side – don’t cut all the way through – stuff the slit with giant chocolate buttons. Wrap the banana in foil – sealed but not too tightly – and either BBQ until the skin is black or bake in an oven at 200°C for 20/25 minutes. Serve with ice cream.

Banana and White Chocolate Muffins

Best Ever Banana Cake

You can add pretty much whatever you want to this recipe and it usually works.

225g plain flour 100g caster sugar 1 tbsp baking powder 1/2 tsp salt 1 egg 4 tbsp vegetable oil 4 tbsp milk 250g mashed banana 85g white chocolate chips

This is kind of a healthy ‘ish cake.

90g golden syrup 135g butter 50g brown sugar 230/250g rolled oats 1 tsp cinnamon 250g (about 3) ripe bananas 100g dried fruit (I use cranberries) 30g cacao nibs/choc chips (optional) Method: Heat oven to 180°C. Line a 23cm square tin. In a saucepan, melt golden syrup, butter and sugar gently until all dissolved. Put oats and cinnamon in a bowl. Mash bananas in another bowl. Pour the melted ingredients into the oats and mix well. Add the bananas, fruit and cacao nibs (if using). I start with 230g of oats and add more at the end if the mixture looks too runny. Tip into the tin, smooth over and bake for 25 mins or until golden brown. Leave to cool in the tin and then cut into squares. Store in an airtight tin and they should last a few days - unless you live in my house!

Method: Heat oven to 200°C. Line a muffin tin with 12 x cases. Put all the dry ingredients in a mixing bowl. In another mix together the egg, milk, oil and banana. Add the wet ingredients to the dry ones. Mix together but don’t over mix. Spoon the mixture into the muffin cases and bake for 20-25 mins. They should be golden brown and a skewer inserted in a muffin should come out clean.

150g rye flour 100 spelt flour 2 tsp baking powder 1 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tsp bicarb of soda 100g coconut oil, melted 200g brown sugar 4 small ripe bananas 200ml almond milk or coconut milk 1 large egg 2 tbsp cacao nibs Heat oven to 180°C. Grease and line a 900g loaf tin. Put all the ingredients in a food processor and whiz until well combined. Pour the mix into tin and bake for 50mins. A skewer inserted should come out clean when it’s cooked. This is a gooey cake and doesn’t keep too long, so I tend to freeze half.

Sustainable Ways To Eat With increasing marine pollution, intensive farming and the ever declining bee populations there has never been a better time to become a little bit more environmentally conscious. The world's population is booming, in fact in the past 100 years, we have multiplied at unprecedented speed and with that, natural resources are under increasing pressure. Our food supply is probably the biggest area of concern owing to the fact that, well, we all want to be able to feed ourselves for basic survival. No bees = no plants; too much pollution = ill health, you get the gist. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to remain sustainable and still eat well. Here are a few tips:

Sustainable Protein

Industrial animal farming has the single largest impact on our environment and that's before we come onto the ethical issues surrounding it. So how can sustainably?

we

eat

protein

1. Pay more for organic or highquality free-range - yes, it's more expensive and yes that may mean you won't be able to eat meat every day, but actually, we shouldn't be. Organic farming practices are far more environmentally conscious and ethical, plus the latest research points to the fact that eating better quality meat and far less often than we are currently used to is better for overall, long-term health.

2. Consider British shellfish - We are an island nation so it should come as a bit of a no-brainer to look to the water that surrounds us for sustainable food sources, but we are missing a trick in a big way. Many of the farmed fish species come with as many environmental issues as factory farming (I urge you to look into salmon farming) and most fishing practices are major contributors to marine plastics and pollution. On the other hand, bivalves (oysters, mussels and clams) are amongst the most sustainable. Oysters, mussels and clams come with the added environmental advantage of cleaning the water around them. Yes, you are reading that correctly, they filter the water in which they grow, depositing impurities in silt and removing it from the water. Just ensure you are buying British. 3. Eat more British beans - A few years ago, the East Anglia Food Link asked an important question: Could Norwich feed itself? To cut a very long story short, they figured out the only sustainable way to feed a city, with produce grown around it, is to introduce more beans to peoples' diets. Beans are a good protein source, grow vertically, therefore, needing less space and they fix nitrogen, meaning they do their share for the environment.

Go Locally Organic

From those beans from Kenya, to the lamb from New Zealand, our food clocks up some serious mileage. In fact, if your food had a

frequent flyer card, it'd likely rack up more air miles in a year than you would in a lifetime. Scary, right?

Buying local is a great alternative, however there is a slight catch. If the local farmer, whose produce you are purchasing, is heavy on the use of chemicals (fertilisers Don’t&expect pesticides), it could potentially have a greater environmental impact than shipping the product from a different country. The best option is to buy organic or if that is cost prohibitive, then speak to the farmer. Many of the smaller farms cannot afford the organic certification but they may also not be able to afford the chemicals, spraying crops only if they really have to.

Choose Minimally Packaged Goods

Let's be realistic, packaging is not It’s personal something that we can 100% get away from, but there is lots that we can all do to reduce our impact. Pick the fruit and veg that aren't in a plastic bag, make your own lunch, grab a reusable cup for your coffee and buy water in glass rather than plastic. It all adds up.

Tanya About Town W

e’ve enjoyed a spectacular summer which has been just perfect for everything from outdoor festivals to open air theatre, but as the nights draw in it’s time to swap those t-shirts for woolly jumpers. I love cosying up on an Autumn night, but with so much going on in Nottinghamshire it’s time to wrap up and head out.

You can’t beat the sights, sounds and smells of the Goose Fair. One of Europe’s largest travelling fairs, it dates back over 700 years. Visitors can enjoy more than 500 attractions when it returns from 3 - 7 October. The weather can’t dampen the spirits (or the 1000 real ales and 200 ciders) at this year’s Robin Hood Beer & Cider Festival as it moves to its new indoor home of the Motorpoint Arena (17 - 20 October) and of course Nottingham’s best loved free fireworks display is back at the Forest Recreation Ground (5 November) Prepare to be spooked in the run up to Halloween this October. Not for the faint hearted, join the Original Nottingham Ghost Walk for an exclusive tour of the fantastic old Nottingham Arts Theatre. Hear the chilling tales of the site as well as discovering the labyrinthine back stage area (8 & 29 October). A brand new stage adaptation of Bram Stoker’s iconic novel, Dracula, is brought to life in a contemporary interpretation at the Theatre Royal (9 - 13 October) completely reimagined by a world-class creative team from London’s West End, discover the gothic thriller that started them all. Mayhem Film Festival returns to Broadway Cinema (11 -14 October) with premieres, previews, special guests and midnight screenings, the festival showcases the best in horror, sci-fi and cult cinema. Want to

get more involved? Join Hart’s Restaurant for an evening of murder, mystery and suspense. Work out ‘whodunit’ at a British Bake-off themed night. There’s a killer in the marquee, can you guess who? (26 October) Speaking of food, there’s plenty going on for foodies. Join the fungi foray at Sherwood Pines (3 October) or learn all about foraging and wild food cookery with the School of Artisan Food in Welbeck (6,27,28 October/1 November). TV Chef James Martin brings his legendary cooking skills to the Theatre Royal (10 October) and Southwell celebrates the origins of the Bramley apple with its festival (20 October). Want to know what to wash all that food down with? Join Notts/Derby Wine School at St James Hotel (28 October) for Nottingham’s very first wine festival. An opportunity to try and buy wines from all around the globe. There’s a heavy dose of nostalgia musically for the latter part of the year. Some of the leading stars of the 80’s join together at the Motorpoint Arena (27 October) for the Stepback! Concert and Culture Club pay a visit (9 November). Over at the Royal Concert Hall you’ll find The Proclaimers (16 October), Rick Astley (12/13 November) and Deacon Blue (28 November). We can almost see Christmas from the end of November. Festivities kick off with Nativity The Musical at the Theatre Royal (21 - 25 November) closely followed by Patchings Arts Centre’s Christmas market (23 - 25 November), Winterfest Arts & Crafts Fair at Thoresby Park (24 - 25 November) and Nottingham Playhouse launch their 2018 pantomime, Robin Hood & The Babes in the Wood on 30 November. Doesn’t the year go fast when you’re having fun!

PROGRAMME BUILDING We all have the capability to write ourselves a little home or gym-based training programme but the first question we often get asked is where or how do I start? There are a few things we advise you to consider if you choose to tackle this challenge yourself. To help you we have provided some guidance so hopefully you achieve much better results, a little faster. You will also now have some basic knowledge to implement into your training.

Muscle Selection As a rule of thumb, if muscle growth is your aim, hit each muscle group twice weekly. Yes, twice! Studies have shown this is the optimum amount for growth. Some people respond well to three targeted sessions, especially on lacking areas. If time is the issue, full body push, pull routines work well or push, pull and legs, then repeat this protocol.

This is how long you should take to do 1 rep or an entire set. Let’s keep this simple, aim for 40-60 seconds, as this is the ideal window for muscle growth. Yes, that means slowing things down a little and controlling what you are lifting.

Muscle selection should be kept balanced. Try to hit a muscle in each direction it contracts at least once a week to maintain balance. Don’t stop training a muscle in one specific lift like a shoulder press because you may be advanced in to focus on the weaker movement for example, a lateral raise. The press still needs to be included to attain balance, just focus more on the lateral raise to improve the weaker movement.

Rest Periods

Too Much?

TUT – Time Under Tension

If you’re looking to build strength, 2-5 minutes between heavy sets, 30-120 seconds for muscle growth. The idea for growth is to keep the intensity high and the muscle under stimulation as much as possible.

Reps and Sets For strength building programming, you want to keep reps under 8 and sets under 6 as an ideal. A common block you will see is 5 x 5, 5 x 3 and 5 x 2, then your 1 rep max efforts. With body building, it’s usually between 8-16 reps (or more for high volume work), 3-6 sets. As a guide, if you choose lower reps you’d generally choose higher sets to fill out the volume needed to progress. An example here is the common 3 x 10 most perform. Consider the TUT, aiming for 40 seconds or more and you’ll see positive improvements. For strength work, focus more on connecting with the movement and explosiveness of the movement.

Email: info@strengthyphysique.co.uk Website: www.strengthphysique.co.uk

If all of this seems a lot to take in, Strength and Physique have an academy that helps guide, educate, support and deliver sustainable results.

We give away FREE spaces over our social media pages every month to random entrants so be sure to follow if you’d like the chance to make a positive change to your health and fitness.

Drive for Volunteer Drivers We are looking to build our team of volunteer drivers, therefore, if you like driving and have a few hours to spare and you want to make a difference to the lives of those with lifelimiting illness, why not become one of our volunteer drivers? We are looking for volunteer drivers to bring patients to the Woodborough Road centre for day care services from various locations in Nottinghamshire. Volunteer Services Development Manager Sarah Rice says: “Our drivers are often the first person our patients meet in the morning and the last person they see after their day with us at the Hospice.

Courses available throughout the year

Competition Winners

Congratulations to: G Dodd who won a beauty package ; M Gold & M Briggs who won theatre tickets; C Hughes who won a £100 meal; J Fletcher who won a £20 voucher; C M Green, M Hooper, M Booth & Mrs Stevenson who won golf passes. Thanks to: Theatre Royal, Beauty Temple, Haveli & Lost City Golf

“For some patients their first visit may be an anxious time, so a friendly face and understanding attitude from the driver puts them at ease. For some the journey may be their only trip out of the house for the week, so the driver becomes a regular part of someone’s life.” Most of our drivers make a commitment of at least once a week, however this can be flexible and it’s up to you how much help you offer. Volunteers need to have been driving for three years or more with no more than three points on their licence. Drivers receive a mileage allowance of 45p per mile, and full training will be given. If you or anyone you know could provide a couple of hours to help patients get from door to door with us at the Hospice, we would love to hear from you. Hold on to your handset Whatever you use your phone for, be it to keep in touch with family and friends, for taking photos and videos, using social media, or for business purposes, you won’t want to lose your phone numbers and other data stored inside. Securing your phone Never leave your phone unattended. If you have to leave it, make sure it’s secure, out of sight and can’t be heard. Don’t draw attention to your phone by leaving it on view on tables in pubs, cafes and restaurants. A tactic used by thieves is to place newspapers or other items over the phone and scoop it up. They sometimes distract phone owners by asking for directions and taking the phone when they are not looking. Don’t leave your phone unattended in coat pockets or bags. If your phone is stolen - report it to the police immediately. Tell them your IMEI number, if you have any tracking apps installed or any markings on your phone. Tell your insurer and service provider too. For more crime prevention information please visit our website: http://www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice
