‘I deserve a second chance!’ A loving young dog who was abandoned as a puppy with others, has once again found herself homeless and is appealing for a new home. Readers may recall the appalling case of 15 puppies dumped by the Erewash Canal in November 2013. Thanks to Nottingham based charity, Animal Accident Rescue Unit, all were rescued and found homes. Sadly now, however, one of them, Peppa, needs a new one. Her owner’s older dog has developed health issues and become aggressive towards Peppa, meaning the family is now forced to rehome her. At 3 years old, Peppa is friendly, likes children and dogs, and deserves a second chance! If you are interested in Peppa and would even like to meet her, please contact our Dog Adoption Officer on 07857 120774. This mobile number must not be used for any other purpose – or you can email the relevant volunteer at admin@aaru.org. uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All potential adoptions need a successful homecheck. Totally reliant on volunteers and donations, the charity urgently needs more cat and dog fosterers in the Nottingham area. It does not deal with healthy strays/unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured or vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. For all rescued animals also still needing homes visit www.animalaccident.org.uk.

New Year... Do I Really Need A New Start Every New Year a number of people will make a resolution to change jobs or look for a new career. The employment market in recent years has seen a strong recovery after the gloomy days of 2008/2009 and no longer do staff have to stay put out of a sense of gratitude for having a job. But despite the healthy state of the employment market is it always wise to move? • Am I taking a good job or just running away from a bad one? To make an informed decision, you need to know what appeals to you about the new opportunity—not just what you don’t like about your current company. • Do I know what I’m getting myself into? Will your visions of a pleasant work environment, rewarding projects and an appreciative manager be the reality? While the grass may indeed be greener on the other side, it still pays to do your homework. Research the firm’s corporate culture, financial stability and leadership. It’s amazing how much information is out there on the internet – and also try and network with current employees. • Will I be paid what I’m really worth? Don’t make the mistake of only comparing the salary offer to what you presently earn. Your paycheck isn’t necessarily the best benchmark. Glassdoor (www.glassdoor.co.uk) has a free salary comparison tool. • What does the total compensation package look like? Yes, salary matters. A lot. But don’t fall into the trap of focusing solely on that one element. A better benefits package, more generous pension plan and bigger bonus opportunities, for example, can boost your bottom line. Also consider your work/life balance. A shorter commute and increased holiday entitlement can make life much more pleasant. • Which company offers more room to grow and progress? At the end of the day, only one person is responsible for your career: you. But it’s certainly beneficial to have an employer that supports your professional development. Opportunity to access training, tuition reimbursement and to attend industry conferences can keep you moving forward professionally. Ideally, you want to work for a company that is committed to helping you grow your skills. Who offers a more clearly defined career path? Pay and benefits are important, but professional development and advancement potential should also be priorities. • Am I letting fear drive my decision? Just as it’s unwise to impulsively leave a job for the wrong reasons, don’t allow fear of the unfamiliar to hold you back from accepting a new one. Changing jobs always carries some degree of risk. But if you’ve thought through the situation and your gut is telling you to make a move, trust your intuition. And who are we to argue with Albert Einstein? “I believe in intuitions and inspirations...I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am” On behalf us all at SOLOS may I wish NG readers a happy and prosperous New Year. © Helen Jones

What is so super about superfoods?
D
o you know your maca from your matcha? Does camu camu confuse you?
Superfood powders are a rapidly growing section of the health food market but if you aren’t the smoothie sipping type then you may be oblivious to their existence. Here is a what’s what of the superfood world by registered nutritional therapist Eva Humphries. Before we begin this list, let’s focus on why you’d bother in the first place. After all our populations have existed and even thrived without that ancient berry from the depths of the rainforest that everyone on social media is buzzing about. The term superfood refers to a nutrient-rich food that is considered to be especially beneficial for health. Put simply, these foods can enhance our existing diets with great ease by adding essential vitamins and minerals that would otherwise be harder to obtain. Take baobab powder for example. Just two teaspoons has the same amount of vitamin C and twice as much fibre as an orange but unlike the orange you don’t have to peel it. Think of superfood powders as the latest convenience foods with the great exception that they are actually good for you.
Maca Grown high in the mountains of South America, this root is a distant cousin of broccoli and is especially prized for its adaptogenic benefits. Adaptogens are
thought to adapt to your bodies needs during times of stress by supporting the adrenal gland (the part of your body that is responsible for releasing the stress hormones).
Baobab This African fruit originates from the “tree of life” and dries naturally on its branches. It is high in Vitamin C which can contribute to better immune function and healthy skin.
Matcha Matcha is a finely ground, pure green tea powder. Originally cultivated by Zen Buddhists, matcha is thought to bring greater mental clarity.
Camu camu Grown on small bushy trees in the Amazon region, this cherry-like fruit is dried and ground to produce an antioxidant-rich powder. It is thought to be especially beneficial for the immune system and for repair.
Mushrooms Reishi, chaga, lion’s mane and maitake are all medicinal mushrooms that are growing in popularity thanks to their varied applications. They are adaptogenic, some evidence suggests they may contribute to lowering cholesterol and they strengthen the immune system.

Time for a Change? The decorations have been packed away for another year and by now the days are starting to get longer, even if only imperceptibly so right now. For many people, minds start turning to the idea of making changes in their lives. Some of you will no doubt be sick of the mention of New Year’s resolutions – maybe you make them every year and watch your resolve crumble a few hours into the first week, day even! Maybe others hate even the mention of resolutions and don’t make them and don’t intend to either. But for many, the start of a new year is like a fresh blank page just waiting to be written or drawn on. It’s a natural break in time, which can look like a good opportunity to make changes. That is how a new year always feels for me – a great opportunity to make positive changes in life, a chance to make this upcoming year the best one yet!
wedding) that makes training for a marathon best left until you have more time to give to it. It might be that right now isn’t the best time to get stuck into your life changes but a few months down the line will be better for you.
So how can you go about making sure that your resolutions for 2017 are your most successful yet?
Many life and business coaches recommend the SMART method of goal setting to help you achieve your goals. To utilise this method, you need to ensure that your goals are Specific (well defined rather than vague); Measurable (so you know that you have reached your goal), Achievable (not overreaching); Realistic (learning Italian = realistic, holidaying on the moon = maybe not so much) and finally,Time-bound (the date by which you want to have achieved your goal).
Firstly, it is a good idea to have a think about what is coming up in the year ahead and what you want to achieve. Is right now the best time to try to achieve these goals? Is there anything coming up in the year ahead that is likely to interfere with your plans for the year – or the flip side of that, is there something coming up in the year ahead that you want to have made life changes prior to? Maybe you want to learn to speak basic Italian before your dream trip to Rome in July or lose weight before your stint as a bridesmaid in September. Or alternatively, when you look at the months ahead, maybe you have so much going on (maybe a house move or planning a
Secondly, think about what exactly it is that you wish to achieve. Visualisation is a good technique to help you to work out what you would like to achieve and how it might make you feel when you have achieved your goal. If you sit and picture the “new you” in your mind, in as much detail as possible, you will get a good sense of what you want to achieve. Does it feel as good as you thought it would? Will it provide what you are looking for in life?
However, you don’t need to wait for a new year or spring or any specific date to make positive change to your life – any day can be a good day to make changes if that is what you think you need to do to lead your best life.

Nottingham Centre (National Trust)
Winter 2017
The Nottingham Centre’s Winter programme continues in to the New Year as follows: February 9th at 2.15pm - ‘Far and Away’, by Josanne Peet: the fascinating story of the Nottinghamshire Emigrants to The New World in the 19th Century. Friends of Wollaton Park in the person of Pete Forster arranged a photo walk which was so successful it looks like becoming permanent. The group, open to the public to join of course, walked round the Park looking for seasonal inflections with a view to making a calendar for next year, each photographer choosing his or her own special feature of the park. Sound advice was given on camera practice, from composition to the technical know-how of f-stops, speed, white balance and ISO, which was appreciated by all. Resulting photos can be seen on the FoWP’s Facebook. Friends have also cleared out masses of rhododendrons around the lake recently, to expose fine views of the island and a vista of the Hall, plus erected new fencing. New activities will be announced in the coming months. Check your local notice-board or Facebook to keep up with us. And don’t forget, the transformation of the changingrooms is on course to begin soon. Any suggestions for its planning are welcome. New members continue to be added to our lists. Anyone who wants to become a member of the FoWP group can join for the sum of £5.00 for an annual subscription, by contact via email or phone. This covers insurance, parking on task days and various perks. Friends of Wollaton Park committee meet on the first Wednesday of every month and invite anyone interested in joining to contact wollatonpark@hotmail.com or telephone Mark Jacobs, the membership secretary, on 07747 616680. Volunteer activities normally take place on the third Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Look for us on Facebook.

ith an impressive 81 years under its belt, the Savoy on Derby Road is the only pre-Second World War cinema left in Nottingham out of 52! It was built in 1935 by the architect Reginald Cooper in the style of art-deco with a curved front. It began its days with just one single auditorium until 1972 when it was rebuilt to become the multiscreened cinema it is today. The Savoy offers a nostalgic trip down memory lane for those of us lucky enough to remember the good old days of velvet seats and curtained screens. I can hear you humming the Pearl and Dean tune now!
The Savoy has majestically preserved the essence of the early days making any trip a real treat, and at only £18 for a family ticket* it’s very affordable too. If you are visiting as a couple then its newly refurbished big screen includes love seats designed especially for the Savoy and its customers to enjoy and snuggle up on. As well as offering the latest movies the Savoy streams live events such as The Royal Shakespeare Company productions and ‘Exhibition on Screen’ art events.
Win 1 of 5 family passes*
Savoy are great for children’s birthday parties too, offering a private screening of a blockbuster film of your choice for as little as £150 for up to 30 children and 8 adults, 2 free cinema tickets for the birthday girl or boy and use of the party room immediately after the film.
Just answer the following question:
Or for all you gamers out there how about a console party which only costs £95 for up to 2 hours? Ever wanted to play your favourite game on a large screen with your mates? Then this is the one for you.
Name:...........................................................................................
On top of all this the Savoy is a fully licensed wedding venue! That’s right you can hire the venue for your big day. To find out more info, what’s on and book tickets visit: www.savoyonline.co.uk or call 0115 947 5812
How old is the Savoy cinema?

Ar rival: s w ie v e R n Bur to re Yet? Are We The Denis Villeneuve’s (director of Prisoners and Sicario) next film, Arrival, has been shrouded in a fog of secrecy. Without giving too much away, Arrival documents the human race’s first contact with extra-terrestrial life through the eyes of linguistic expert Dr. Louise Banks, Amy Adams (the current Lois Lane of the DC Cinematic Universe), and her team of America’s best and brightest as they try and discover just why these aliens have come to our little slice of the universe. While you may be thinking the trope of first contact is completely overdone in the film industry and that nothing they do to this stereotypical sounding story can surprise you, let me tell you, Arrival will prove you sorely wrong. You are engrossed in trying to solve the mystery of these aliens with the characters on screen. This makes every win by the team feel like a win shared by you, as you lose yourself in the tantalising mystique of the plot. By now we have seen more alien encounters than we have had hot meals. But somehow Denis Villeneuve makes meeting this race of alien feel like it’s the first time you have ever seen anything unearthly. What helps hook you is how fresh and completely new everything in this film feels. You’re overwhelmed with awe and terror as the characters, and vicariously through them you, come face to face with this new being, and that is an exhilarating feeling that has been lacking in many sci-fi films of late. Every aspect of the film is executed not only in an innovative and mind bending way, but somehow in a believable and grounded one too, which only adds to the incredible level of immersion this film achieves. Amy Adams does a great job leading the team of scientists into the great unknown. But it was actually Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye from the Avengers) that really shone in this film. His portrayal of physicist Ian Donnelly perfectly captured the awe and excitement that comes with meeting a whole
new species for the first time. Renner adds just the right amount of ‘dork’ to the role that makes his character a loveable addition to the team instead of the horribly stereotypical science-geek it could easily have been. Overall this film is a refreshing and captivating new take on Earth’s first contact with other worldly beings. The mystery is not only fascinating, but how it unravels makes you feel like a part of the team. I was left flawed by how incredibly well Denis Villeneuve handled introducing us to a whole new kind of alien. He effectively invoked both feelings of awe and terror in me again and again. If you think you’ve seen all the “meeting aliens for the first time” films, think again... Arrival = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
You’ve got into a rut of projecting your inner anxieties regarding what others think of you outwards; creating (what you believe are) real obstacles and issues to pursuing your dreams. Don’t you know that you’re bigger and brighter than the characterised re-telling of you by other people? Well, you’re about to realise this, and discover the right place for your unique gifts to shine. Be ready to start developing them even further (ignoring what others might think).
You’re ready to leave behind, for good, something you’ve long wished to. This final preparation is about expressing the stress you feel regarding this closure; acknowledging your fears is the first step to breaking free of their, sometimes, paralysing hold over you. Gain fresh insight about your life’s direction, and strengthen your resolve to face adversity, by deliberately hunting down and vanquishing your inner demons. You WILL walk away from this internal confrontation stronger, and set for a new era.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Eight of Swords, The High Priestess, Eight of Coins, Ace of Wands)
(Eight of Cups, Nine of Swords, Temperance, Ace of Swords)
(Four of Wands, Two of Coins, Nine of Coins, The Devil)
(Queen of Swords, The Fool, Two of Swords, Ten of Wands)
You’re dying to move and improve where and how you live, and you’ve put yourself on the hook to work your socks off until you can. You’re liberated by the realisation that you alone control your life, and with that freedom comes equal responsibility to make something of it. You’re already focusing on the next goal, and your effort WILL be rewarded, so relax and enjoy the ride (p.s. do not succumb to old, bad habits- because you’re moving onwards and upwards!).
Where do you feel most oppressed, burdened or overworked in your life? You’re about to make a bold move to stimulate change here; one requiring risk, faith and swift decisiveness. Don’t overthink it- DO it. Once this change is initiated, your life will regain its forward momentum and you can tune back into the wise intuition that guides your best decisions and hunches. Make no apologies for the change you create. It’s for the best.

We all love the nostalgia of the British seaside and proper fish and chips don't we? Well in the heart of Nottingham you can have a little bit of that and more at the George's Great British Kitchen. Pick up a newspaper (their ‘Proper British Menu’), sit in one of their beach huts, admire the quirky but stylish award winning restaurant design and then enjoy British food with a unique twist! We decided on a twist on the classic cod and mushy peas for our starters. Cod pakoras with a coriander and mint dip and also mushy pea fritters covered in crunchy seaweed batter. Every bit as nice as they sound. For mains, I went for the eye catching fish chowder in a toasted bread bowl. If you generally love fish and something a bit different, this is for you! My hubby made his usual burger choice with the lovely proper dirty double burger and wait for it..... twice cooked Stilton chips. They have to be tried!! The staff here are a particularly happy and helpful bunch, always nice!
There is an array of cocktails on offer too, ranging from splendid gin tipples to delectable sharing cocktails, served in a teapot with tea cups and saucers! Their trophy cabinet speaks volumes. They opened in 2014 and by 2015, they were winning awards for Best New Venue (Nottinghamshire Food and Drink Awards), Best International Restaurant Design and Best City Centre Experience at the Nottingham Post Food and Drink awards 2016.
As they say..... A good and proper place to enjoy the British seaside.... without leaving Nottingham.

Friday 31st March
Superfood Soups and Shakes Did you make any New Year’s resolutions? If you did, are you still on target or have you fallen at the first hurdle? I have only ever kept one New Year’s resolution in my entire life, but I optimistically try again every year. Most people attempt to “get fit” or stop smoking, or drink less or perhaps find a new job. Many of us resolve to “eat more healthily” and I am sure that many a New Year’s day is spent searching the back of the cupboards for the juicer that has been languishing there for the last couple of years, ready to juice or blend our almond butter and bee pollen or whatever this year’s “must have” ingredient is. We may even have a recipe book filled with “super smoothies”, miracle juice blends and cabbage soups promising to “detox” us and leave us with bright eyes and clear skin. The thing is, you have to be pretty committed to persevere
with wheatgrass, matcha and dandelion, and let’s be honest, most of them don’t taste all that pleasant, even if they are “doing us good”. But you can make some truly delicious and healthy soups and smoothies that will give you a real boost. These recipes are full of vitamins and nutrients that will help to revive flagging appetites after the excesses of the festive season and get you ready for the lighter evenings and milder days of spring. I can’t promise you’ll lose weight or cleanse your system or even feel 10 years younger, I can promise these are super tasty though, full of goodness and just that little bit different (and they don’t smell of grass cuttings!).

Curried Coconut,
Freshly ground black pepper (to taste)
and Kale Soup
Method You can either throw the lot in a slow cooker for 6 hours, or cook on the hob for around 2 ½ hours. Serve with crusty bread.
Peanut, Sweet Potato (this has a lot of ingredients, but is very, very simple to make, and hopefully most of them are already in your store cupboard) Ingredients (serves approx 8) 3 cloves of garlic, peeled & roughly chopped ½” knob of ginger, peeled & roughly chopped Handful of fresh coriander, roughly chopped Handful of parsley, roughly chopped 2 x jalapeno chillies Rock salt to taste 1 can full fat coconut milk I large leek 1 generous tsp cumin 1 generous tsp smoked paprika 1 generous tsp oregano 1 generous tsp mustard powder 1 generous tsp ginger powder 2 generous tsp curry powder 1/2 tsp cinnamon I pt water I large sweet potato (roasted, roughly chopped, inc. skin) Approx 100g shelled peanuts (blended, with 2 parts water) 100g shelled peanuts (whole) I tin black lentils Fresh kale (roughly chopped) Juice of 1/2 lime
Banana Nutshake This is a truly delicious dairy-free shake which the kids will love too! Ingredients (serves 1) ½ a banana (peeled, chopped & placed in the freezer) 2 handfuls of unsalted cashew nuts & 150ml of water (to make the cashew milk, soak the nuts for at least 2 hours in water (2 parts water) then blend the nuts and water together for 1 and a half minutes) 5 pitted dates Ice cubes Method Pour the cashew milk in the blender and add the frozen banana pieces, the dates and 5/6 ice cubes. Blend for 1½ minutes. Sprinkle with flaked dark chocolate and serve. (Thanks to Jago Barnes at “The Little Vegan” for this super recipe)
Beetroot Coconut Latte Ingredients (serves 1) Half a boiled (not pickled!) beetroot 100ml boiling water Couple of drops of vanilla essence 5 drops maple syrup or honey 150ml coconut milk (or milk of your choice) Method Blend the beetroot with the boiled water, vanilla essence and maple syrup. Pour the milk over the beetroot juice base and serve.
Rothera Sharp Celebrates 30 Years at Wollaton The Wollaton branch of Rothera Sharp Solicitors recently celebrated its 30 year anniversary. Originally a branch of German and Soar Solicitors, the office was officially opened in November 1986 by Martin Brandon-Bravo, local Conservative MP at the time alongside Tim Soar, then Senior Partner at German and Soar, and Partner Jayne Smith, who is still at the branch today. Jayne now leads the Wills and Probate department for Rothera Sharp, advising on Court of Protection, lasting powers of attorney, elderly client, wills, probate and tax planning issues. In 2001 German and Soar Solicitors was incorporated and Wollaton became a branch office of Rothera Dowson Solicitors. As of June 2016 Rothera Dowson merged with Sharp Young and Pearce, becoming Rothera Sharp Solicitors. Today the branch specialises in wills, probate and trusts and residential conveyancing services, with our friendly team able to advise and assist on a wide range of legal matters. Jayne Smith says of the anniversary: “I grew up in the area and attended the Bilborough Grammar School. It has been a privilege to be involved in the local community over the past 30 years and I look forward to continuing to help my clients in the years to come”.
A Halifax Building Society agency also operated from the premises, run by Jayne alongside the legal practice, which offered services such as wills and probate, conveyancing, personal injury, crime and family law. Other employees included Patricia Wheeler and Michelle Young, who was secretary

misogyny in all its forms. It’s a very important aspect of the overall hate crime work being conducted and one that will make Nottinghamshire a safer place for all women.
Hate crime is any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by you or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate.
“What women face, often on a daily basis, is absolutely unacceptable and can be extremely distressing. Nottinghamshire Police is committed to taking misogynistic hate crime seriously and encourages anyone who is affected by it to contact us without hesitation.
It can take many forms but it’s most commonly seen when a person acts differently towards you because of racism, homophobia, transphobia, disability, religion, belief or gender. We will listen to your concerns and support you to stop it from happening. If you are a victim of hate crime you may feel isolated, vulnerable, angry, frustrated and helpless. It’s important to know that you’re not alone and there are people who can help you.
“The work we are doing with Nottingham Women’s Centre is so valuable and I am looking forward to continuing that work.” If you have been a victim of hate crime call your local police on 101.
In 2016 Nottinghamshire Police was the first force in the country to recognise misogyny as a hate crime Chief Constable Sue Fish said “I’m delighted that we are Special Constabulatory Recruitment - If you would like to find out more about becoming a Special Constable and our pre-recruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links.
a helping hand The Nottingham Emmanuel School Hosts Careers Event £127 £197
The annual ‘Work Matters’ conference organised by The Nottingham Emmanuel School has given 500 students from across Nottinghamshire access to 28 separate industrial, business and educational experts, in order to inform students of the sheer range of ambitious pathways available to them. The event, held at the Nottingham Trent University’s Newton Building gathered students from The Nottingham Emmanuel School, Trinity School, Bluecoat Academy, National Academy Hucknall and Magnus C of E Academy Newark. “The Work Matters conference is so much more than a careers fair –it is an opportunity for students to really consider pathways into sectors that they have never even heard of let alone considered working in before. We wanted students to look beyond the starting salary, the employment perks and instead to really consider the level of fulfilment and job satisfaction that entering a career in a particular field could have. All of the keynote speakers and business representatives were willing to give up their time to support the event because they believe passionately in supporting the local community and in creating employment opportunities to help drive forward the local economy,” said Kerry Wiltshire, Assistant Principal at The Nottingham Emmanuel School.
Volunteers needed – can you help?
Are you looking for volunteer work that is challenging, engaging, and rewarding? The PSU provides non-legal practical and emotional support to people attending court without legal representation.
What do we do?
We do not give legal advice. We have a small office in Nottingham County Court. Clients can receive guidance, support and procedural help from volunteers.
Volunteers invest their time, skills and energy to solve clients’ problems and accompany them through the court process.
