Walks With Emily & Friends Cossall Canal Walk Walk distance: 3 miles Difficulty: Easy Starting point: council car park off Cossall Road (free parking)
This is a very pleasant walk which follows well trodden paths and bridleways. You’ll follow the Erewash Valley Trail taking in the scenery of Nottingham Canal just a stones throw from the picturesque Nottingham village of Cossall. We started our walk from the car park just off Cossall Lane. This car park is free all day. Dogs are ok off the lead for pretty much the entire route of this walk (as long as they don’t go swimming in the canal!) apart from the short stretch on the main road.
To download the Ordnance Survey map route, and for more dog walks around the Nottinghamshire area and beyond: visit www.greatbritishdogwalks.com Follow us on social media for updates: Facebook: @greatbritishdogwalks Instagram: @greatbritishdogwalks Twitter: @gbdogwalks
From the car park (with the road behind you), follow the path to the right with the canal on your right hand side. You’ll pass a handy ‘you are here’ map as well. Walk down the path ignoring any turn offs to the left until you reach a sign which reads “Erewash Valley Trail Shortcut”. Take this to the left and follow it down until you reach a green railway bridge. Cross this and make your way towards Nottingham Canal. Turn left here (with the canal on your right) and follow the path down. Keep following the path until it reaches the main road in Ilkeston. Turn left and keeping on the path, walk until you cross a small bridge and the road bends to the right. Here you will see a path and a footpath sign leading straight on. Watch the road here as there is a sharp bend and limited footpath. Follow the path crossing back over the railway and back up to the canal. When you reach the canal, turn left with the canal on your right. Follow this path and you will eventually come back to the car park where the walk started.

Fancy (a) Biscuit? A special cat rescued by a local charity is now looking for home – can you help? Animal Accident Rescue Unit rescued Biscuit, who was living rough with a painful abscess. Following vet care, he returned to his beautiful long-haired biscuit-coloured self! As his fosterer explains: ‘Biscuit’s the most wonderful companion – he absolutely deserves a proper home after his tough past. He’s special as he’s FIV (Feline Immunodeficiency Virus) positive ... but this hugely misunderstood condition does not affect his quality nor length of his life. It just means he cannot live with non-FIV cats and must live indoors.’ Indeed the charity has rehomed hundreds of FIV- cats, who have gone on to live full lives in their new homes.

Last week a line was crossed.
The gy Wag Tail
Gary and I were out walking the dogs in some fields. I turned around just in time to see Gary getting his whistle out and comparing it to another guy’s whistle. We are talking dog whistles of course! In that moment I realised we had passed over to the dark side. Or should I say the dog side. We had become “dog people”. It was time to accept and embrace our new lives. So how do you know you are a “dog person”? It goes deep but there are tell tale signs... Waterproof trousers and walking boots are your outfit of choice. Every pocket of every coat you own is full of treats, poo bags and manky balls. You separate your “dog walking” clothes from your “best” to start with, and then suddenly you only have “dog walking” clothes! Your car/van is full of towels, old sheets and mud. You become far less house proud (to be fair that didn’t take much for me) and much less squeamish. My Herbie is a roller. He is in ecstasy having a good roll in fox poo. It used to be a reason for hysterical clapping and shouting, Benny Hill style chasing him around a field and an instant bath. Now we have an “odourometer” of 1 to 10. Measured by the time it takes from getting the dogs into the van to the smell hitting our noses. 10 is a definite bath, 5 is a shrug and we convince each other it’s not that bad... light an incense stick and move on. Standards have slipped.
New stench heights were reached last week. Walking round a lake, young Herbie dived in and retrieved a massive dead fish. When I say dead I mean rotten, furry and stinking! Proud as punch and super excited, he then proceeded to rub himself all over with “eau de stinky fish”. Even for us “dog people” this was horrific. This was assessed as a grade 20 on the scale and two baths later he had only just reached a 10. Before we adopted Harry I was adamant that I couldn’t scoop the poop. Weirdly though, when it’s your dog you can. Herbie (it’s always Herbie), has introduced us to a new challenge in this regard. Apologies if you are eating while reading this. As a grass muncher, Herbie often has what Gary and I like to call a “dangler”. It’s a technical term that I won’t expand on – suffice to say, what goes in must come out. He has been known to run around the field with what can only be described as a link of sausages hanging from his backside. This is unacceptable and assistance is usually required. It’s a two man (and one dog) job involving two twigs, chop stick style and lots of arguing about the most efficient removal method. How has my life come to this??? On the bright side, thanks to those two hairy stink bombs we have never been fitter, happier and healthier ... even with the mud, fox poo, stinky fish and a few danglers. © Ali Wale
BIG HEARTED
RESTAURANTEUR RECOGNISED Restaurateur John Molnar – from the Cod’s Scallops in Carrington, Bramcote and Long Eaton and the Nelson in Burton Joyce - has been recognised for his support and great work in the local community - including fundraising and supporting local groups. His achievements
include raising an amazing £60,000 for Maggie's – over the last three years – based at the City Hospital Maggie’s offers professional support to people with cancer and their loved ones. John was presented with the Special Recognition Award, sponsored by Eden PR, at the annual Nottingham Restaurant & Bar Awards - a celebration of the food and drink industry that the city and the county has to offer. The 2019 winners and nominees in 15 categories were announced at a spectacular Awards Ceremony held at Colwick Hall Hotel attended by 300 people from across the restaurant and bar industry. John personally undertakes challenges to raise money – he has run the Great North Run twice for Maggie’s as well as the Robin Hood Marathon. John is also in the top 5 per cent of personal fundraisers on Just Giving for his annual Robin Hood Half Marathon efforts for Maggie’s. In addition, John has hosted various events to support the community such as holding free festive lunches at The Cods Scallops for both less fortunate families and the elderly with help from Age UK. Through Tasty Tuesdays he has donated food to a homeless shelter in the city. The Cods Scallops is also in the process of launching Food Waste UK where any food left overnight is advertised on an app and collected by less fortunate people. The Cods Scallops also raises money for the other charities such as Fishermen’s Mission - the only fishermen’s charity that provides emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care. John comments: “It’s really important that we do our bit. We regularly support local causes, through charitable donations, and hold charity quizzes every month each for a different local cause. Since we took over the Nelson last June, we have raised £2500, and our ambition is to raise at least £10,000. “I’ve always tried to help people less fortunate, from employing ex young offenders and drug addicts to donating
hot meals for the homeless. After working with Maggie’s Cancer with collection boxes, I came up with the idea of adding £1 to everyone’s bill. “ “As well as charity work our businesses are passionate about helping the environment with a bid to use less plastic and only using sustainable produce whenever possible. We have just featured in Giles Cohen’s new book Truth, Love and Clean Cutlery which highlights businesses that serve good food in an ethical and sustainable way.” Originally from Nottingham, John has been in the trade over 30 years, starting when he used to skip school to help his Dad in the kitchen at his restaurant in Derby. After catering college, he started a Youth Training Scheme at a four-star hotel in Nottingham and has worked everywhere from Scotland to Newcastle and even Bermuda! Kathryn Greenwood, Joint Managing Director of award sponsors Eden PR who presented the accolade added: “John is a worthy winner, we had a huge number of entries for this category and there are some amazing venues across Notts who do great work in the local community. John stood out because he gets so involved personally and is a real inspiration.” Annie’s Burger Shack and Perkins Bar and Bistro were runners up for the award and the Plough at Normanton received a special mention. A hugely popular winner, when John was announced he received a standing ovation from those attending the awards event. His latest project is Top Floor Development launched in November 2018 and is a unique dining concept where customers can dine on the perimeter of a professional kitchen. It’s a warehouse-style private dining room that seats up to 24 and tickets are sold on an individual basis or the whole venue can be hired exclusively for bespoke events. As well as ticketed five-course events, he regularly holds one-off pop-up nights, such as recent Meat & Malbec and Tour of Italy events.

Probably the best fish and chips...
Prices are really reasonable with mains averaging about £10 and puddings all under £5. Worth every penny and the fact that the restaurant was packed on a Tuesday night is evidence that the good folks of Nottingham agree with me!
When the girls asked me to review a chippy, I had to double check I was hearing right. What can you say about fish and chips? Well, quite a lot actually...
Kids eat free all Summer
The Cod’s Scallops was created by John Molnar in 2011. The concept was very clever – fresh, sustainably caught fish cooked and served in a fun, family friendly environment. You pick your fish, choose how it’s cooked and select a side dish. Simple as that. We visited the Carrington branch and even before you walk through the door you are transported to the seaside of yesteryear with the lawn and deckchairs out front. The decor is bright and cheerful with plenty of retro touches like the framed, old fashioned seaside postcards on the walls. The guys and girls working there all wore either knotted hankies (boys) or fifties style headbands (girls) and their tops all had funny writing on the back; “Had dock me duck” and “What a Brill Plaice” were two that made me chuckle. It is this attention to detail that really makes this place special. Then there was the food. Meals were served in white china versions of a takeaway box and I noticed that children’s meals came in sandcastle buckets. Very, very clever. Between us we had hake in batter, haddock baked with garlic, lemon and herbs, Whitby giant scampi and a Gold award winning steak and scale ale pie, all served with chips. Sides of battered onion rings and mushy peas rounded off the order. Hand on heart, the best chips I’ve ever eaten. The fish was out of this world and the onion rings tasted more of onion than ring, if that makes sense. They received the highest accolade from my son; “best ever”. Frying in beef dripping makes a massive difference. Four empty plates said it all. Sticky toffee pudding and a chocolate brownie sundae rounded the evening off with style. All washed down with a bottle of crisp, white wine.
Every Monday, from 4.30pm – 6pm*
Starting Monday 29 July throughout the school holidays kids up to 12yrs eat free in all three branches. *T & C’s apply.

Give Chickpeas a Chance! Chickpeas,
also known as garbanzo beans, Egyptian peas and kabuli chana, are an ancient legume, used in cookery all over the world. As well as the beige ones we are familiar with, chickpeas can be black, green and red. I buy mine in tins but you can also get them dried or in a jar. They are a cheap and versatile store cupboard favourite eaten at least once a week in my house. The humble chickpea also packs a punch. A great source of fibre and high in protein they also contain antioxidants, vitamins and minerals making them a great vegetarian alternative to meat. What’s not to like! Something you might not know is that ground chickpeas are used as an alternative to coffee and supposedly it tastes delicious. I’m not a coffee drinker so let me know if you give this a try.
Chickpeas have a delicious nutty flavour and depending on how they are cooked can have a creamy texture when mashed or crunchy when roasted. They are so versatile! I have loads of recipes and it was pretty hard to select just three. Hummus is the classic recipe but feel free to pimp it up with other flavours like roasted peppers or add some chilli for a spicy version. The curry I have picked is also totally flexible, depending on what you have in the fridge/freezer. Use peas instead of spinach and omit the paneer if you are watching the calories. Chick chick bang bang is a favourite in my house and one I am teaching my son to cook for when he goes off to university. Cheap, nutritious and tasty it ticks all the boxes. Enjoy!

Classic Hummus
Chick Chick Bang Bang
Chickpea Curry
400g tin chickpeas (drained & rinsed) 2 tbsp lemon juice 6 tbsp extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp tahini 3 or 4 cloves garlic – crushed 1 tsp ground cumin pinch of salt water (as needed) paprika to garnish
2 or 3 medium sweet potatoes 400g tin chickpeas – drained & rinsed olive oil 2 red onions – halved, quartered & sliced 30g fresh coriander - chopped 2 tsp harissa paste 3 or 4 wholemeal flatbreads or wraps 2 tbsp mango chutney 500g spicy breaded chicken (optional) 300g halloumi (optional) coleslaw & salad to serve
1 tbsp sunflower oil 1 onion – finely chopped 2” piece ginger – grated 2-3 garlic cloves – crushed 3 tbsp spice paste (I use Patak’s Madras) 50ml water 400g tin chickpeas – drained & rinsed 400g tin chopped tomatoes 240g baby spinach 250g paneer – cut into small dice and fried (optional)
You need a food processor or hand blender for this. Put the chickpeas, lemon juice, tahini, olive oil, garlic, cumin and salt in the processor or bowl and whiz to a creamy paste. Add a small amount of water and blend again until you have the right consistency. This is a personal choice. I like mine fairly thick. You also need to taste and tweek as you go. Maybe add a bit more lemon juice or salt. Serve with carrot sticks or toasted pitta bread.
Put the oven on to 200°C. Peel and chop the sweet potato into small dice. Put in a pan with salted water. Bring to the boil and simmer until just cooked (about 7 mins). If using, put the chicken in the oven to cook as per packet instructions. Drain the sweet potatoes and pat dry with kitchen roll. Crush the chick peas lightly with a fork or masher. Heat a splash of oil in a non-stick pan and fry the onion for a few minutes, then add the sweet potato and fry until it starts to brown, then add the chickpeas, harissa and coriander to the pan, stir well and warm through. Put the flat-breads in the oven for a couple of minutes to warm through. If using halloumi, slice and fry gently in a non-stick pan until golden brown both sides. To plate up: put the warm flatbread on a plate. Spread with mango chutney then put the chickpea and sweet potato mixture over the top. Then add the chicken or halloumi, a couple of spoonfuls of coleslaw and some salad leaves and enjoy!
In a large shallow pan, heat the oil and gently fry the onion until soft. Add garlic and ginger and fry for 2 mins. Add the spice paste and water and cook gently for 5 mins. Add chickpeas and tomatoes. Bring to the boil and simmer gently for 30 mins. If it gets too dry add some water. Add spinach a handful at a time and stir until wilted. Add paneer (if using). Check and season to taste. Serve with rice, naan and a dollop of yogurt.

Research shows that young people aged between 18-24 are most likely to be targeted. People pay for expensive training courses which don’t exist – sometimes jobs which don’t exist – or pay for CV services or security checks with illegitimate companies. The fact is that recruitment businesses like Solos are governed by legislation which has been drafted to protect candidates and also to make it easier to identify reputable and ethical agencies. We are required by law to tell you up front about our services and what we will charge you for. For example an agency cannot make finding you suitable work conditional upon you paying for an additional service i.e. CV writing. Any advertisement must clearly state whether the opportunity is permanent or temporary so that job seekers are not misled in any way. If a job offer seems too good to be true it probably is. If communication comes from a generic email (hotmail/gmail/outlook etc) not a legitimate company then be wary. There are numerous organisations which can guide you during your job search. If in doubt always seek further clarification. And never be afraid to quiz any recruitment agency who may contact you : www.safer-jobs.com www.gov.uk/agency-workers-your-rights www.rec.uk.com/about-us/for-jobseekers

FREE paint on offer for residents and community groups in Nottinghamshire. Nottinghamshire residents and community groups now have more opportunities to collect free paint thanks to the Community RePaint Nottinghamshire scheme run by Veolia (Nottinghamshire County Council’s waste contractors). Did you know that more than half of us have between four and twenty tins of perfectly good paint gathering dust in our homes? This leads to an estimated 40 litres of reusable paint being wasted from our homes every minute in the UK? Community RePaint Nottinghamshire is hosted at Calverton, Warsop, Newark and Beeston Recycling Centres, where reusable paint can be taken by Notts residents for reuse, and Nottinghamshire residents, local community groups and schools are able to pick up that paint for free! Free paint is available to collect on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. A collection slot must be booked in advance. For residents, between April and September at slots between 6pm - 7.35pm. a helping hand A Guiding Light For People With Sight Loss A recent report by Guide Dogs, revealed that over 42% of people with sight loss feel that they are ‘left out’ of everyday moments, such as socialising, family life and work. To tackle the problem, the charity is calling on people to sign up to become a ‘My Guide’ volunteer. My Guide is a free service that matches trained sighted volunteers to a person with sight loss, helping them to build confidence and take part in social and leisure activities. Alan, a former World Championship rower lost his sight at a young age. Alan enjoys leading an active life, which he says would not be possible without the My Guide service. Alan is matched with volunteer Karen, who helps Alan to go to the gym. The two were matched because of their mutual interest in fitness and sport. Karen applied to become a My Guide volunteer after leaving her job, and says she enjoys helping Alan pursue the interests he loves. If you think you could help someone like Alan, contact Volunteer Manager Elizabeth Felgate on 0345 143 0221 or email:Elizabeth.Felgate@guidedogs. org.uk. Applicants will need to be over 18 years of age and willing to undergo training.

Climbing Mountains And Facing Fears For Macmillan
It’s not every day you decide to do something crazy, but in November 2018, Rachel Chambers signed up to do a 10 day trek in Nepal for Macmillan and she flies out to Katmandu on 12th October. Macmillan is a fantastic resource providing nurses, information and advice for people affected by cancer. You only realise how important they are until you need them, as Rachel did when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2011. This challenge is no walk in the park. It will take Rachel up the Langtang valley reaching a glacier that is over 4000m (12,000 feet) above sea level, undoubtably causing altitude sickness and fatigue. Finishing with two days of project work in a village hit by earthquakes in 2015. One hurdle that Rachel is dreading is crossing an ‘Indiana Jones’ style rope bridge. This may seem insignificant, but a fear of bridges means it will take every ounce of courage for this brave lady to cross and continue the trek. You can help Rachel reach the £4k target by donating at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/ rachel-chambers14. Any donation will be gratefully received. Follow Rachel’s training and fundraising through the just giving page or instagram page: rachels_nepal_trek_ macmillan19.

T
he winner will get a private ski lesson, 30 mins tubing, 5 viper slides, 4 toboggan rides & a hot meal in the Alpine Lodge for a family of 5!! Swadlincote Snowsports Centre, in the heart of the National Forest, bustles with activity and has so much to offer. For the budding skier or snowboarder they offer lessons on a nursery slope, and for those with a little bit more experience they have the main ski run of over 160 metres. You can book lessons or open sessions whatever suits you. I don't know about you but ever since I watched ‘Cool Runnings’ I have wanted to try a Toboggan run. Well Swadlincotes Cresta Run didn't disappoint with 500 metres of exciting twists, tunnels and turns. Age restrictions apply, 4-7 year olds must ride with an adult and 8+ years must ride on their own.
The Sno-tubes are so much fun, they are large inflatable rings which can be spun and linked together to slide down a section of the slopes. (Min age 4 years.) They also have the viper slide to ride down in an inflatable ring, which consists of a 70m slope full with twists and turns. The Alpine Lodge & Bar overlooks the slopes and offers hot and cold food as well as beverages for those apres ski moments, or you can relax in the new coffee lounge which overlooks the nursery slope. Not too bad to say it started its life as an old spoil heap left over from the highly productive coal mining days and was transformed by John Nike who's estate also owns many other ski centres in the UK.

Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show Goes From Strength To Strength Leading classic vehicle events organisers Classic Shows reported an ‘excellent turnout’ for the popular Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show which took place at Thoresby Park over the early-May Bank Holiday weekend. Now running for over 25 years, this family friendly event attracted 1,000+ vintage, classic and modern classic vehicles over the weekend and featured a large autojumble, vehicle judging and awards and quality food and drink all set within the stunning grounds of Thoresby Park & Courtyard. Visitors were also able to experience a host of new content for 2019 including modern vehicle dealership exhibitors, new trade stands and enhanced children’s entertainment. Classic Shows director Matthew J Harvey commented ‘Once again, we saw unbelievable support from vehicle exhibitors and visitors alike who turned out in their numbers and contributed towards a fantastic weekend of motoring heritage. We were delighted with how the new content was received and a specific mention must go to our sponsors Classicwise Collection and Crowdpullers Events who managed the modern vehicle dealership stands. Bookings are now open to exhibit, trade and visit our next event at Thoresby Park on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2019’.
Classic Shows will run over 20 events in 2019 – including the huge Father’s Day Motor and Classic Car Show at Castle Howard, nr. York on 16 June 2019 – and return to Thoresby Park for a one-day event on Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2019. Vehicle exhibitor, trade/autojumble and visitor bookings are now open and can be made by visiting www.classicshows.org or by phoning the Classic Shows office on 01484 667776. Don’t miss Classic Shows’ return to Thoresby Park for the Classicwise Collection Notts Classic Car & Motorcycle Show, Monday 26th August 2019.

NG8 JULY / AUGUST 2019
A winning year for Marshall Volvo NOTTINGHAM’S Volvo dealership is celebrating a record-breaking year for the Swedish brand. The motor manufacturer with a reputation for producing some of the safest and most sturdy cars around picked up no fewer than 43 significant awards during 2018 while also enjoying its highest sales in the UK in 28 years. With a total of 50,319 new car sales, the firm certainly bucked the trend in a UK market which declined overall by seven per cent. There were awards for all three Volvo SUVs, with the XC40 claiming 12 of them. These included the prestigious What Car? Car of the Year title and Auto Express’s Small Premium SUV of the Year award for the compact model now available to test drive at Marshall Nottingham on Valley Road in the city. The XC60 was the first award winner of 2018 in being voted Best Medium Crossover in the UK Car of the Year honours. The XC60 also won the Safety Award in the What Car? honours and was voted New Car of the Year in the AM Awards in which Volvo was named Manufacturer of the Year. This model was further voted UK Car of the Year in the UK Car of the Year Awards and took the Best Large SUV titles in both the Fleet World Honours and Parkers New Car Awards. In the Caravan and Motorhome Club Towcar of the Year competition, the XC60 pulled away from the pack as Towcar of the Year, the Best Family Towcar and the Best Towcar, caravan weight 1500kg-1700kg. The XC40 was Best Towcar, caravan weight 1350kg1500kg. The XC90 was named Large SUV of the Year in the Company Car Today CCT100 awards while the Which? Awards saw Volvo selected as Car Brand of the Year.
Volvo was voted Best Fleet Manufacturer in the ExpertEye Awards and in the Motor Trader Industry Awards and BusinessCar Awards was Carmaker of the Year and Manufacturer of the Year respectively. The PHEV Manufacturer of the Andrew Moss, Year went to the brand in Retailer Principle, Marshall Nottingham the GreenFleet Awards. Volvo’s drive for cleaner motoring was further recognised with the XC60 T8 Twin Engine voted as Large Plug-in Hybrid of the Year in the DrivingElectric Awards. These achievements were reflected internationally, with the XC40 named European Car of the Year and the XC60 mid-size SUV acclaimed as the World Car of the Year. Meanwhile Volvo’s UK performance contributed to another year of record global sales, with more than 640,000 Volvo cars sold worldwide. The launch of the new V60 premium estate delivered further success, with family car awards from Parkers and News UK, and the Practicality Award from carwow. It was also named Estate Car of the Year in the Scottish Car of the Year Awards and Best Compact Executive by Carbuyer. Andrew Moss, Retailer Principal at Marshall Nottingham, said: “This exceptional run of awards is amazing to see, but each one is appreciated for the vote of confidence it represents in what we are doing to extend the all-round strength and appeal of the Volvo brand. “We are immensely proud of our new range of cars, and our record-breaking sales show our customers rate them, too. We encourage car buyers in Nottingham to come and take a test drive to experience their award-winning features for themselves.” For more information on the Volvo model range, go to: www.volvocars.com/uk or visit Marshall Nottingham on Valley Road, telephone 0115 8284533.

Heleniums
MY FAVOURITE PLANT The great garden writer Christopher Lloyd, when asked what his favourite flower was, replied: “the one I’m looking at now”. It’s that way with me with heleniums; all are beautiful in their own right, all are equally easy to grow and all do a great job in the border, be it a 15-inch (38cm) edger to a 6-footer (180cm) at the back. Heleniums come in all shades and variations of yellow, orange and red. The only thing to remember is that heleniums need good sunlight to obtain the best colours. All heleniums are a great source of nectar for bees and butterflies which will flock to the flowers with glee. Gardeners often think of heleniums as late-flowering, adding colour to the August and September garden, but with careful selection of varieties and regular dead heading and watering, you can have heleniums in bloom from mid-June until the beginning of November. The short varieties are usually earlier to flower and with dead heading will go on longest. Probably the best is the 2ft (60cm) tall Mardi Gras with its jolly masses of flower and a strong constitution. Also, highly recommended is the bright red Red Army and Fata Morgana a lovely variety with upswept petals in apricot with orange undersides making a beautiful two-toned effect in the garden.
Mid height heleniums (3ft / 60cm tall) are great for the middle or back of borders (depending on the size of border). The most popular is Sahin’s Early Flowerer but a better choice is the magnificent El Dorado with very large golden yellow flowers. Tall varieties (4-6ft / 120180cm) might need a stake in an exposed site but I rarely need to resort to this as the stems are very thick and strong. Amber is the best of newer varieties with masses of flower on upright plants. You can’t go wrong with the 4-5ft old variety Kanaria with its canary yellow flowers. For something showier the picoteeedged flowers of Vicky stand out well at the back of the border. Heleniums mix well with lots of garden plants. I particularly like them with grasses in late summer – short moor grasses (molinia) or taller silver grasses (miscanthus) and feather grasses (pennisetum). There are a few simple rules to follow to get the best out of heleniums: water whenever dry even in spring or autumn; deadhead short varieties regularly; cut down the stems to just above the ground in winter and only divide or move them in spring not autumn. Follow these and heleniums should come back each year to brighten up your summer and autumn garden.

dgame: n E s r e g n e ews Av Bur tonRevi Making e h t n i y r o t His The day is finally here. We’re in the endgame now folks. After 11 years of record breaking, trend setting and history making, Marvel studios is putting a cap on their first saga. The end of a journey that has spanned half of my life, set the film industry ablaze, and created one of the best entertainment properties ever put to film that has and will inspire generations to come with its heroic characters, fantastic world building and thrilling adventures. And now we are here to witness the end of all that hard work as we say a hearty farewell to many of the members that founded this wide and beautiful universe. So Thanos won, and now with only the original Avengers left standing, the world is in bad shape. With half the population blinked out of existence it is up to our remaining heroes to pick themselves up and continue the good fight. First off let’s get the obvious out of the way. The humongous cast of this film is phenomenal. From relative newcomers to day one veterans, these iconic titans of the comicbook industry come to life. And what makes these performances shine even brighter is that the writers of Endgame completely get these historic characters. The opening of Endgame introduces us into a heart broken MCU, and what such a heavy and sad tone needs is time to breathe, so it has the impact it deserves. However, what happens here is a rushed set of scenes that still deliver great moments, but so rapidly that the effect of each moment is a fraction of what it could and should have been. Sadly, wonky pacing isn’t the only thing Endgame has to battle with; there’s also an annoying over reliance on jokes. Outside of Paul Rudd’s surgically precise delivery of every Antman moment in the movie, a lot of the attempts at humour just did not land and chaotically clashed with the muddled tone of this film. Now, you may be worried that the end of this phenomenal saga is actually a fun but disappointing mess; and up until this point I was worried about coming to the same conclusion. But then a switch is flipped, the goofy jokes
are put to one side, our heroes suit up, and everything changes. The last hour of Endgame is a nerdy fever dream that may be the best battle to ever appear on a cinema screen. Humour is organic and rightfully brings out rapturous laughter, the fights are intense, awe inspiring feats in CGI and choreography and the emotional peaks throughout this biblical last act of a whole universe are heights no franchise or movie has hit and may never hit again. To say the end of Endgame is a dream come true would genuinely be an understatement. While Avengers Endgame has its fair share of problems with a rushed opening and goofy middle, throughout, it never forgets to show why the MCU is so great; and that is because of the phenomenal characters it is filled with and the growth we get to see them go through. And with THAT ending, how can anyone come out of this disappointed. Avengers Endgame = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 21)

This year the choir will give its own concert of English folk songs, including a selection from John Rutter's Sprig of Thyme. St Mary’s in the Lace Market was filled to capacity as 500 singers, musicians and audience gathered for a glorious performance of Mendelssohn’s much loved Old Testament oratorio “Elijah”. Joining the Ruddington Choir were the Burton Joyce Choral Society, the Nottingham Hospitals’ Choir and the Djanogly Community Orchestra, plus soloists Jane Harwood, Fiona Milburn, Simon Lumby and James Gaughan and organist Michael Overbury. THE POWER OF FITNESS Article after article, I love to be able to bring you some sort of take away value that you can implement into your life and reap the benefit. This time I’d like to share something that’s close to my heart. Two people, two stories… two very different approaches.
STORY 1 You might recall the article on my client Gail a few months back, how Gail had retired and taken on a new challenge to push the boundaries of limitation. Gail came to me wanting to compete and step on stage with the intension of saying ‘I did this’, a personal conquest. Gail is doing amazingly well – her relationship with food and exercise has been transformative and she is on target to meet her goal.
STORY 2 Katie, another client of mine, came to me because of the unique skill set I have of turning life and all aspects of it around using fitness and nutrition… with a little mindset coaching in there too. Katie suffers with mental health issues, something very close to my own heart and knowing full well how fitness saved my life, Katie found herself in a similar situation a few years back.
You see, when you get the balance right, the body falls in line and food is enjoyable because you get to eat how you like and still move in a positive direction. What most fail to realise is the power exercise holds in crafting the future we deserve. It saved my life, gave Katie focus and a new positive way of living and gave Gail a challenge that helped her achieve a personal goal.
Wanting to not stress about exercise, understand how to nourish her body but still enjoy life as it should be, was the goal.
Don’t follow the crowd. Don’t conform to outdated values. Plough your own furrow and follow your dreams. Exercise and fitness can play a part whatever your plans.
Katie intended to start my program to take back control of her life, what she got was a lot more.
Small changes can massively improve your quality of life and how life presents itself.
In a matter of four weeks we’d already established a lifestyle that really fitted with Katie’s demands of day to day living.
How will you change your life this week?
The point I am making here is how powerful fitness is and what it can help you achieve when you get the right guidance. Most people think exercise is only about weight loss and building muscle and associate it with a vanity thing. Sure, for some that might be the case, but for others, including those I work with, this is far from the case. Exercise is an outlet, a focus, a motivating factor, a contributor to life and career. Medal Success For Aquastars! Bramcote SC AquaStars recenty travelled to Walsall to take part in the West Midlands Novice Synchro Competition, bringing home two trophies and 5 individual medals. Congratulations to Lizzy Gayton, Molly Doolin, Alice McMillan, Heidi Woolley and Alice Hunter who all won medals in the individual figures. The afternoon saw them set out to challenge for success in the team routine events. And what an afternoon it was! Three teams entered and three teams medalled. Team Matilda won a bronze medal. Gold in this category was taken by BSC Aquastars Team Rock who swam brilliantly to a medley from School of Rock. Team Rouge defended their title in the 15 + under category and once again achieved 1st place with a superb swim to a medley of songs from the film Moulin Rouge. All of this success has been the result of a lot of hard work and training. The athletes practice for between 5 and 6 hours per week and it is obvious that this commitment to training is paying off for the club. Coming up, these teams, as well as the clubs’ more experienced girls, will be competing in the Warks and Staffs competition, again at Walsall, and will then be travelling to London to compete in the national event, the Synchro Combo Cup, at the London Aquatics Centre. Hopefully more medals and trophies will be coming their way.

• Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there. Use timer switches on lamps or your radio. Securing your shed Sheds are often targeted by thieves because they are not designed to store valuable equipment and property - they were originally designed to house potting plants. Their fairly flimsy construction makes them easy to break into via the door, windows, walls or even the roof.
• Replace standard hinges with strap hinges secured by coach bolts or use security screws on existing hinges. • Consider fitting a battery operated shed alarm. • Visibly mark the property you keep in your shed and garage and use anchor points to secure larger tools and equipment. • Register your valuables on the national online property database Immobilise so that Police can reunite you with them if they are ever stolen and later recovered. Visit the Immobilise website.
However, many homes have little outside storage space, so the shed inevitably becomes a place for storing items that are not wanted indoors. We are working hard to prevent criminals from targeting sheds and properties, but you can play your part in making sure Nottinghamshire Police is recruiting. Please visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk/careers for details of what opportunities are currently available.
