One In Five Executors Only Find Out They Were Appointed When Someone Dies Despite the majority of people who become executors to a will being consulted when the will is being drawn up, new research has revealed that one in five people appointed to be an executor only find out that they hold this responsibility after a friend or loved one has died.

The study, by the Co-op, also discovered that an additional fifth of people were made aware that they were an executor before someone died, but after the will had already been written, making it difficult for them to turn down the role. Being an executor involves taking responsibility for administering a person’s estate after they have died, which can include arranging the funeral, collecting the deceased’s money and possessions, paying their debts, taxes and expenses and making sure that the wishes expressed in the person’s will are carried out.

10

Executors can renounce the role, but only after someone has died and before they start the job. They can also appoint an attorney to handle the estate on their behalf if they would prefer not to. Of the 2000 people surveyed, 32 per cent had acted as an executor, with 42 per cent of these saying they liked having the responsibility. However 27 per cent thought the role was stressful, 20 per cent were upset by the experience and 12 per cent sought professional advice because they were uncertain about how to take on the role. When asked whom they would choose to act as their executor, 29 per cent said their spouse, followed by children (16 per cent), a legal provider (9 per cent), a sibling (9 per cent), or a friend (4 per cent). 32 per cent responded that they were unsure. To get advice about choosing or acting as an executor, including if you want to discuss the benefits of appointing Rothera Sharp as professional executors, please contact our Wills & Probate team on 0800 088 6261.

The Magical...

by

What an enchanting restaurant! I was hooked from the minute I stepped out of the car. From the amazing smells wafting through the air, right through to the flaming puddings that were cooked at the end of our table! We visited the restaurant on a Sunday afternoon with the whole family (6 of us) and were greeted by the authentically dressed staff who really looked after us. Suraj, the manager, who has a great rapport with customers, was very helpful when we were trying to decide what to order. The restaurant itself is traditionally Indian, decorated with vibrant colours & fabulously colourful pictures. It boasts beautiful lakeside views with amazing sunsets - very romantic. We chose the Sunday special; a selection of 5 starters and 5 mains with accompaniments for £19.99 each and Suraj kindly offered to do our daughter a veggie version, which she loved. The other starters were a delicately spiced Malai Chicken (£6.95) and Samosa Chaat (£5.95) which was amazing. For mains, the kids had Chicken Korma (£11.95) and to accompany their dishes they had nan and pilau rice (around £3.50 each). All in all the food was delicious and beautifully presented, especially the starters with their hollowed out tomato lanterns! A palette cleanser of mango sorbet was served between courses and the hot towels are a wonder to behold! I’m not going to spoil it but they need to be seen to be believed. We managed to squeeze in three puddings and boy are we glad we did! We chose; pistachio kulfi served in a spun sugar basket (£4.95), crepes suzette (£7.95) and pineapple flambe (£7.95), both of which were cooked right there at our table, flames & all. Overall a truly magical journey with delicious food, a live pianist and wonderful surprises along the way. If you are looking for something extra special, Mewar Haveli is the place to go. We will definitely be returning and the sooner the better.

Spring I love the onset of Spring. As the evenings draw out and the nip in the morning air recedes a little, everything starts to come to life. From blossom on the cherry trees to the new born lambs, Spring heralds the opportunity of a new year and the inspiration for lighter dishes and fresh seasonal ingredients. As early Spring begins to turn to summer there is a wealth of produce to choose from with rhubarb, new potatoes, oysters and leeks in March, to wild garlic, sea bass, crab and spring lamb in April to asparagus, artichoke, mint and mackerel in May, the list is endless. Springtime sees a flurry of festivals and special days, some dating back many hundreds of years, others more modern – from the well-known such as Mothering Sunday, Shrove Tuesday and, of course, Easter, to the less well-known such as “hare pie scrambling” in Leicestershire, cheese rolling and eel throwing in Cambridgeshire and the “Obby Oss” dance festival in Padstow. Well, as spring is in the air and the weather is warming, here are a few of my favourite springtime ingredients in recipes that won’t leave you slaving over a hot stove all day. Traditionally, it was considered best to enjoy oysters when there is an “r” in the

month, this is because the sea is cooler in the northern hemisphere and the oysters are not spawning, in truth, with modern storage methods this is less important. Still, if you are a proper “ostreophile” (oyster lover) you might want to hold with this tradition. Personally, raw oysters with a shallot vinaigrette suit me just fine, but for those who prefer their oysters cooked, try throwing them on the first barbecue of the year and serving them with garlic, parmesan and paprika. Spring wouldn’t be spring without lamb for most of us, especially at Easter, but how about ringing the changes a little and put yourself in the mood for your summer holidays with a Greek inspired roast leg of lamb with lots of oregano and olives. To follow, try the new season’s rhubarb, Yorkshire forced rhubarb, grown in the dark and harvested by candlelight will be in the shops from January, but our local Nottinghamshire produce will be in the shops by March. Of course, you can’t beat a good rhubarb crumble but how about something a bit lighter for spring? Try this spiced rhubarb with yoghurt recipe for a lighter alternative, and a great way to use up those leftover Christmas dates!

Barbecued Oysters with garlic, paprika and Parmesan butter If you prefer your oysters raw, try serving with a simple red wine and shallot vinegar (peel and finely chop shallots, mix with a good quality red wine vinegar and leave to infuse for 1 hr). If you prefer your oysters cooked, impress your guests with this flavoursome recipe for the first barbecue of the year! Ingredients Serves 4 12 oysters (ready shucked unless you really know what you are doing!) Chunks of good bread to serve For the butter 60g butter, at room temperature 1tsp flat leaf parsley, finely chopped 1 tablespoon lemon juice 1tsp cayenne pepper 2tsp smoked paprika 1tsp onion powder 50g Parmesan, grated 2 garlic cloves, crushed Method (heat the barbecue until the coals are white) In a small bowl, beat the butter until soft, then add all the ingredients and mix well. Lay a piece of cling film out on a clean surface. Spoon the butter into the centre then roll into a sausage shape and seal tightly. This will keep in the fridge for up to a week. Slice a round of the butter and place on top of each oyster. Place (shell down!) on the barbecue and grill for approximately 6 mins or until bubbling. Serve with some “proper bread to mop up the juices.

Greek inspired Roast Lamb Ingredients 1 large leg of Lamb (about 3kg) 6 garlic cloves 1 large bunch fresh oregano (you could use dried if necessary) Zest and juice 1 lemon 6 tbsp olive oil New potatoes (approx 4 per person) 400g can chopped tomatoes Large handful pitted Greek olives, chopped Method (pre-heat oven to 240C) Pound the garlic, half the oregano, lemon zest and a generous pinch of salt in a pestle and mortar, then add the lemon juice and a slug of olive oil. Stab the lamb all over with a sharp knife, then pat the mix all over the lamb leg, pushing as much of the herb paste into the slits as possible. Toss the new potatoes in the remaining olive oil & herb paste and place in the roasting tin around the lamb. Roast for 20 mins then reduce the temperatures to 180C. Roast for 1hr and 15 mins for medium-rare, adding another 15 mins for medium. Baste the lamb once or twice with the juices and turn the potatoes. When the lamb is done, remove from the tin and allow to rest. Throw the rest of the oregano in with the potatoes and keep warm. Place the roasting tin over a medium heat, add the canned tomatoes and chopped olives to the pan juices, then simmer for a few mins, add a pinch of sugar if the tomatoes are a little bitter. Serve the lamb with the potatoes and sauce and a simple salad. Side Salad Mix 100ml olive oil with 2 tablespoons white wine vinegar and a pinch of salt. Finely shred 2 Cos lettuces and slice 6 spring onions. Crumble over approx 100g feta cheese. Toss everything together with freshly ground black pepper just before serving.

Roasted Spiced Rhubarb with Dates and Yoghurt Ingredients - Serves 4

Roughly 28g unsalted, shelled raw chopped pistachios or flaked almonds 50g dates, pitted and chopped 2 teaspoons finely grated orange zest Half teaspoon vanilla extract 2 tablespoons runny honey 1 tablespoon caster sugar 3 large rhubarb stalks cut into 2 inch pieces Quarter teaspoon cinnamon 140g natural Greek Yoghurt Method (pre-heat oven to 170C) Gently toast nuts in a dry frying pan tossing frequently until golden brown. Cool and chop. Place dates, zest, vanilla, 1 tablespoon of the honey (and sugar to taste) and roughly 200ml water in a small saucepan and bring to the boil. Reduce heat and simmer gently until dates are very soft and liquid is reduced by about a half – 8-10 minutes. Place rhubarb in a small baking dish and toss with cinnamon and the date mixture, then place in the oven and roast for approximately 25 mins (turning halfway through) until rhubarb is tender but still holding its shape. Whisk the yoghurt together with the remaining 1 tablespoon of honey in a small bowl, serve with the spiced rhubarb and juices on top and sprinkle with the pistachios.

’s Creed: in s s a s s A iews Bur ton Rev lums! Damn Hood Videogame movies...to be or not to be? That’s the question we have been asking ourselves for decades, as each game-to-movie project comes and fails. 2016 seemed to be the year that this would change. But after Warcraft’s terrible critical reception earlier last year, all of our hopes and dreams were left on the shoulders of one lonely Assassin... The story of Assassin’s Creed (or AC for short) is reported to take place within the expansive universe of the games and sees a death row inmate, Callum Lynch (Michael Fassbender), saved from demise by Abstergo, a huge corporation who basically control the world through their monopoly of everything on this universes’ shelves. After waking up in one of their facilities, Callum is hooked up to a machine called the Animus. In this, Callum experiences the memories of his ancestor Aguilar, an Assassin in the Spanish Inquisition. In the games, you experience the game through Desmond Miles, a blank slate of a character allowing you to immerse yourself in the experience and become the character as you control him. This blank slate approach seems to be one that the film has taken too, but in this case to the nth degree. When we meet Callum we don’t really know anything about him, what he’s like, why he is on death row, nothing. And throughout the course of the film we don’t really get much more information out of him thanks to his angry and detached demeanour, effortlessly acted by Fassbender. This lack of character depth and overwhelming mystery makes it hard to connect with the character. There were some interesting and engaging characters in this film, mostly from the supporting cast. Ariane Labed’s badass Spanish Assassin added a much needed feeling of fun and energy to the film. The action in the film was also mixed. What ruined the flow and feel of the action scenes in almost every case (except for an awesome

final confrontation that was shot and executed epically well) was the fast and confusing editing. The constant and irrelevant jumping from the 1400’s to modern day kept yanking me out of the moment, so you lose the flow and feel of the scene thanks to the three second trip back to the present. It may sound like I’m giving this film a really harsh time, but it did have some real potential. There were so many story beats that could have gone in some really interesting and uncharted directions. Or if they had been explored and fleshed out just that bit more, it would have made for a really engaging and inventive piece. Sadly the film seems to miss the mark at every juncture. What we got was a weird story that just didn’t delve deep enough into this complex universe. And then there was the editing, oooh don’t get me started on that editing again. Assassin’s Creed = 5.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Nottingham River Cruise Company Makes Short List for Group Travel Awards 2016 Relocation will make them the best! Princess River Cruises have been selected by GTO Magazine as Runners Up for best canal or riverboat operator for groups 2016.

Coming Soon! Our new building will be ready for us to occupy early Spring 2017

Now in their 20th year of operation from the Park Yacht Club in Colwick, Princess River Cruises are relocating to a brand new site 400 metres down river to a purpose built location. A unique river location opposite the racecourse in Colwick. This new location will create the opportunity for the company to improve on its services to include a land based bar function room with parking facilities, ensuring their passengers have a quality pre-cruise establishment, as well as having the facility to offer the people of Nottingham a pristine riverside location in which to hold functions such as weddings, corporate hospitality, family anniversaries etc. The proposed move is expected to happen early in April 2017, and until then services will carry on as normal.

Nottingham Flower Club Report In September we had our demonstration entitled "In a Dream World" which was most enjoyable. October saw our workshop where talented members showed us how to make medilino shapes to enhance arrangements and how to wire and plait palm leaves, we also had a demonstration entitled "Around the World" (pictured left). At the end of November we had a very seasonal demonstration entitled "Deck the Halls" which gave our members lots of good ideas. Finally, in December we had our Christmas Social with lots of tasty seasonal goodies and lovely Christmas arrangements demonstrated by fellow members. A good way to acquire new skills for all members.

New Admissions Policy at Clumber Park

Clumber Park is a special and important place, which is why it’s one of only a handful of Grade I registered parks in the country and is enjoyed by so many. We are changing the way we admit visitors to the Park. We are doing this by removing the pay barrier around the Walled Kitchen Garden so that everyone who comes to Clumber Park can enjoy it, and by modifying our admissions model from pay-per-car to pay-perhead. The change came into effect on 4 January 2017. This change marks the start of a £8.5m programme of revitalisation of Clumber Park that will include restoring areas of heathland and important habitats for wildlife which have been badly damaged by cars and erosion, bringing the historic Walled Kitchen Garden and Pleasure Grounds to life, opening up views that have been lost, protecting ancient trees and investing in and improving visitor facilities. National Trust members will continue to benefit from free entry. Further information about Clumber Park Revitalised is available on our website at www.nationaltrust.org.uk/clumberpark photo: National Levenson

Uncertain times I

’m sure there are many people out there, reading this, who are feeling scared and anxious in these uncertain times, with Brexit, the American election result and the ongoing economic crisis all contributing to these feelings. Whatever your beliefs or politics there is little denying that it can feel a little like standing on shifting sands at the moment and for people who already suffer from feelings of stress and anxiety, this can start to feel unbearable. So what can we do when we start to feel as though our negative feelings about uncertainty are beginning to overwhelm us? As mentioned in a previous article, the first and easiest thing we can do when we feel the physical effects of stress or anxiety in ourselves is to take our focus to our breathing. By focusing on our breathing, on slowing it down and breathing in for a slow count of four and out for a slow count of five, we can stop ourselves from spiralling into the rapid breathing, racing heartbeat and hyperventilation that can leave us feeling panicked. But breathing techniques aside, what else can we do? I’m sure many readers will be familiar with the Serenity Prayer, with its request to “grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, courage to change the things I can, and wisdom to know the difference”. It can be very important when dealing with feelings around uncertainty to know what you do have the power to affect and what you don’t. As hard as it may seem, as Elsa in Frozen would suggest, sometimes you just have to let it go. Many of the things going on in this world right now are so huge and beyond our control that we do have

to let them go, especially if you suffer from anxiety disorders. If you are someone who does suffer with anxiety, mindfulness techniques can be useful in allowing you to experience the thoughts without getting attached to them. As the next bit of the Serenity Prayer states, it can also be incredibly helpful when struggling with feelings of uncertainty to take action! Taking action, however small, can help you feel as though you are back in control of things and as though you are doing something. Knowing that you are doing something can help quell those feelings of helplessness that can come with uncertainty. Join an environmental action group or volunteer to help those affected by the economic crisis; write to your MP with your concerns or join with your neighbours to set up a neighbourhood watch scheme. Whatever you do will be better for your mental health and your state of mind than simply worrying and becoming overwhelmed by your feelings. However, if you find that your negative feelings around uncertainty are having a major impact on your life then it might be worth finding a good talking therapist to help you work through them in more detail. Although some people find it hard to get help for their mental health issues, the stigma around them is fading fast as more and more people realise that it is nothing to be ashamed of. You wouldn’t feel bad about getting a physical complaint seen to and nor should you about getting a mental or emotional health issue dealt with. Times really are changing in all manner of ways...

to be aware of opportunist thieves, who may take advantage of your vacant home and enter through any doors or windows which have been left open in the warm weather. You will need to know how to stay safe in the Spring and be aware of the steps you can take to protect your property.

Lock your doors and windows: Whilst it’s tempting to keep doors and windows open to make the most of the fresh, spring breeze, this is a perfect opportunity for thieves to enter your home and remove any valuable goods. Make sure you lock your doors and windows before going to bed or leaving the house. Security outside your home: Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property. Visible burglar alarms and carefully directed security lighting can deter burglars. Make sure alarms stop sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t disturb your neighbours.

and ask a trusted friend or neighbour to keep an eye on your property. Try to make your home look occupied while you are not there - timer switches can be used on lamps or your radio. Students heading home for Easter: Easter is a popular time for students to head home, meaning a popular time for opportunist thieves to enter your University house. If you are leaving Nottingham for the Easter break, make sure you take your laptop and any other valuable items with you – do not leave them behind, even if you don’t need them. Don’t leave any empty electrical boxes outside your home, as this could indicate that you have something worth stealing. If you would like to speak to your local police, call us on 101.

Going on holiday: As Easter approaches, thieves will be aware that homes may be vacant as families make the most of the Bank Holidays. TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini

Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus

Even Air signs understand that ‘no man is an island’ (though they need their space, god knows). This spring, you’ll feel a deep, compelling urge to get involved with something; join a group, a team, a movement. Something bigger than you alone, in which you truly believe. And whether the cause is worthy or not, you’re going to find wonderful new friends, fellowship and satisfaction by being part of it. So, dive in!

A handful of Kings is never a bad thing! This spring, you will master many areas of your life. Your emotions, intentions, ideas and resources will align and you’ll enter a phase where you’re taking the lead on plans you’ve long awaited to execute. Everything comes together to create a ‘success-fest’, and it’s down to you playing to win and taking control.

Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius

Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio

You’re a ‘man with a plan’. Sharing and engaging with people and situations that make you uncomfortable has helped you to develop and refine your own ideas in new directions. It’s from our ‘opposites’ we learn the most. And your plans have now been pressure tested: you’re confident they’ll lead to a better future. The next step? Get help. The Universe has lined up opportunities and resources to accelerate your progress. Find them, and use them, to go further faster.

You matter more than you realise. You arrive at a powerful insight about your life to date; one which galvanises you to make a brave leap into something new. It’s something which inspires you, and happens as part of a group or team. It’s fun and social; it creates new bonds and friendships in your life. And, importantly, it makes you realise how much you count, and how much you have to offer the world.

Boxer Rescue News

More Fosterers Needed!

We have had an increase again in older dogs being surrendered to the Rescue and have had two boys aged 7 and 8 in kennels now for a very long time. It would be absolutely fantastic if we could finally find them their “furever” home. Both boys are playful, and need to be in a home where they are the only dog without young children or cats. In return they will offer unconditional love, share your settee and keep you warm on cold evenings. This is also a special appeal for Jessie, a lovely 2 year old little girl who has been diagnosed with a life threatening disease for which there is no cure. Juvenile Kidney Disorder is a kidney disease that doesn’t allow the kidney’s to operate as they should, they don’t grow to their full size therefore cannot cope as the dog grows. Jessie has been diagnosed with this cruel disease and her owners have decided they can no longer mange her illness and have therefore signed her over to us. We agreed to take Jessie on in the hope we can find a foster-carer for her who is around during the day and ideally has experience of the disease. Jessie will need regular “toilet-breaks” and accidents are a possibility as the disease takes hold. The Trustees, on the advice of our Vet, have agreed to continue with medication as this will prolong the inevitable but there is no cure. We know she will only have a short life-span and we think we have found a special foster carer who can love and look after her for the remaining time she has, this could be months or years, but she will not live beyond the age of 4. Apart from her illness, she is a typical bouncy boxer who loves cuddles and walks but she does tire easily, we are therefore appealing for donations towards the cost of her medication, please see the just giving section on our web if you can help at all. If you can support us in any way; by donating financially, your time, leaflet drops, donating unused gifts or knitting, sewing, baking, anything we can include in raffles, no matter how large or small, please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you for you continued support and interest.

A local animal charity that gives a ‘lifeline’ to abandoned domestic animals and wildlife, is appealing for more fosterers. With frequently no room to admit any more, an influx of abandoned animals at this cold time of year is a worry. Animal Accident Rescue Unit runs a foster system as it has no premises. Fostering benefits domestic pets by giving a ‘real’ home environment, even if temporary – particularly appreciated during winter months. Fosterers see the transformation from nervous animals to happy, confident pets ready for adoption. Just like Jason and Kylie (pictured) whose long-term owner sadly suddenly died. They are now thankfully in a great new home. As one fosterer highlights: ‘Even if you can only offer a short-term home, the charity wants to know … all you need is space, be reliable and experienced in looking after a cat or dog. For safety reasons, we expect foster cats to stay indoors.’ Dog fosterers must be patient – but advice is offered, and all fosterers and adopters are homechecked. To find out more on helping transform the life of even one needy cat or dog, leave a message you’re your contact details on 0115-9321555, or email the details to email admin@aaru.org.uk. You will get a reply as soon as possible. To see who would love a new start, all the waiting animals are online at www. animalaccident.org.uk

Something for all ages! Drayton Manor Park & Zoo is a theme park resort in Tamworth, Staffordshire. Built in 1949, the park covers 280 beautiful acres of lakes and parkland, and is packed with great rides and attractions. A family run business since George & Vera Bryan OBE first purchased the home of the former Prime Minister Sir Robert Peel (famous for starting the police force) and opened it up to the public in 1950. Today, the park features some of the biggest, wettest and scariest rides around, a zoo with over 100 species from around the world, a 4d cinema and a number of arcades. There are plenty of rides for everyone from the ever popular Thomas Land™ boasting a multitude of great rides for the little ones to the more daring Shockwave, Maelstrom & Apocalypse, with its 54 metre plummet to Earth which can be done seated or standing, be prepared to scream! In between these rides there are plenty of favourites for the whole family that bring back nostalgic memories from my childhood including the Flying Dutchman, The Big Wheel & the Buffalo rollercoaster. To top it all off you can stay on the campsite or enjoy a stay in the lovely Drayton Manor Hotel, which has 15 Thomas & Friends™ themed rooms. We visited as a family of five, including little ones, teens and adults. We spent the whole day there, with plenty to keep us all busy and entertained. We could have done another day. Opening hours can be found on the website but generally the park opens at 9.30am, rides start at 10.30am & close at 5pm. We could see why they have 1.5 million visitors each year. To win a family pass just answer Deadline the following question: 21st May Drayton Manor started in which former PM’s home? 2017 Answer: ......................................................................................................
