Easylink – making the City more accessible! Nottingham City Council and Nottinghamshire County Council have launched a new and accessible network of Easylink buses for people who may struggle using existing local bus and tram services. Easylink is operated by Nottingham C o m m u n i t y Transport and provides a door to door service, from 8am to 7pm Monday to Friday, travelling anywhere up to ten miles from Nottingham city centre. Fully wheelchair accessible buses allow passengers to get to the shops, leisure activities, visit friends, medical appointments or anywhere else they want to go. Easylink buses offer: • Regular, fully-trained and friendly drivers who can help passengers on and off the vehicle and help carry any shopping to their door. • Brand new fully wheelchair accessible vehicles with a rear lift and space for up to two wheelchairs as well as up to eight conventional seats. • Low-cost travel for concession card holders and free travel for their escort or companion if they need one. • The ability to book a journey up to seven days in advance for a one-off trip, six weeks in advance for regular journeys or three months in advance for a trip to a medical appointment. All people need to do to make use of the service is register with Nottingham Community Transport. Unless they already have a Nottingham City Council Mobility Citycard concession card or Nottinghamshire County Council Disabled Concessionary pass then they are automatically a member of the Easylink scheme. When a passenger books a trip they will be given an exact price for that door-to-door to journey. Journeys can be booked by phone, text or email.

You As A Brand When considering your future, think of yourself as a product. You are trying to sell your expertise and skills to companies. It will be harder to convince someone to buy a product when its packaging is haphazard and sloppy. It is the same with yourself – maintaining a professional image is key. Things to consider: • What you wear – Maintaining a smart appearance is not only useful in creating a good first impression, but can also boost your confidence. • Your body language – Even if you are shaking with nerves, try to disguise it. Giving the appearance of confidence is more important than actually being confident. • Your speech – Try to keep your voice calm and controlled and don’t accidentally interrupt or talk over anyone else. • Email Addresses – It is extremely important to have a professional email address. Email addresses such as ‘poopsy@…’ and ‘missbabyface@…’ (both real life examples…) are inappropriate for anything professional. Create a separate professional email account if necessary. Something simple like ‘firstname.surname@…’ or a variation of this is best. When is this relevant? • Online – Employers are now using social media to browse the lives of interviewees so think about whether a post may come back to haunt you before you put it on there! • Interviews – Both telephone and face to face. Even when conducting telephone interviews (which many employers do in the first instance) you should be dressed as if you were in the same room. This will help you get into the moment and react professionally. Think of it as a method actor – playing the part of an assured, experienced professional. Just remember that you may meet potential contacts or employers at any time so always be polite and confident and try to dress in an appropriate way for important events.

eview: Deadpool R ny Title?! n u P A ? g in t You Expec W hat Were The sown up mouth job has been ripped off, the badass blood masking suit has been put on, and finally we can all say: the merc with the mouth has officially and marvellously been put onto the big screens. The story of Deadpool is an incredibly simple one. When it comes down to it this film is just a good ol’ story of love and revenge, but with a Chimichanga flavoured twist. The simplicity of the story is in no way a bad point for this movie. The plot works perfectly by giving Deadpool a vehicle to exhibit just why he is such a beloved character. It puts him in plenty of situations where Deadpool’s special kind of brutality and quipage shines. And boy does it shine brightly. But it wouldn’t be any fun seeing Deadpool strut his stuff if the guy playing him wasn’t the right fit. Thankfully there was never even a whisper of an issue with Ryan Reynolds’ portrayal of the merc with the mouth. He was born to play Deadpool (properly, we’re all looking at you X Men Origins: Wolverine). Reynolds really does the character justice, getting the physicality spot as well as the genuine nature of the character. In the wrong hands, Deadpool could have come across as a stupid, gun toting, potty mouthed idiot. Don’t get me wrong, he still is a stupid, gun toting, potty mouthed idiot, but a real, loveable one thanks to Reynolds’ inherent charm and charisma. Amazingly faithful interpretation of beloved characters aside, this film is just incredibly good fun and hilarious. From the smart use of the opening credits, you know you are in for a ride full of laughs. From slapstick to incredibly crude to talking straight to the audience, Deadpools arsenal of comedic weaponry is both vast and highly effective. The jokes come thick and fast, full of self-deprecating humour, as Deadpool pokes fun at the superhero world in general. This film is one of the best comedies I’ve seen in a while.
The action is stylish, fluid and brutal from the outset and it doesn’t let up throughout the film. Taking full advantage of the 15 age certificate Deadpool doesn’t even hint at holding back, with moments of gore that will force your mouth open in both shock and laughter at how insanely cool what just happened was. Overall this film is a blast. From start to finish you are cracking up with laughter, and when you’re not giggling like a five year old at the latest inventive spin on trash talk, you are left eyes wide open at just how cool and badass they have made Deadpool as he puts down a ridiculous amount of fools. One of the best adaptations of a character I may have ever seen, from design to writing to acting, and one of the best superhero films I have ever seen. Deadpool = 9/10 © Sam Burton (aged 18)
Oaks restaurant and bar is well situated in the heart of Nottingham. They serve simple, locally sourced meat cooked over a wood fired grill, and boy do they do a good job! As you would expect from the name there is an abundance of oak everywhere. From quirky tables and chairs to the walls! Large chandeliers of candles, along with the open flame grill, give this place a really cosy, relaxed feel. Service was friendly and attentive and Marcos, the manager, made sure all the customers were well looked after. This is the second review where the toilets are a must see - must be the new thing! The menu, while not massive, is well chosen. In our opinion, better to have a select few choices but done well, than a huge array of mediocre offerings. To start, we had some lovely quail Scotch eggs and a real beauty, baked Lincolnshire poacher cheese with toast. Despite many attempts, we have been unable to replicate this at home. We followed this with a tasty honeydew beer and black pepper chicken that has clearly been well marinated and king prawns with herbs and chilli which was really impressive. The grilled chicken bites and hand-cooked chips were “like no other chicken we have ever tasted” according to the children - high praise indeed! Even the desserts are made with locally sourced ingredients. We enjoyed apple tarte tatin with toffee apple ice cream along with a selection of other delicious ice creams.
Liquid refreshments are chosen with equal care. There is a great selection of craft beers and for all those cocktail lovers out there, the restaurant’s range of unique cocktails is available for just £4.50 each between Monday and Friday – happy days! OAKS also has several other offers during the week. On Tuesdays and Wednesdays diners can enjoy Rump Day – an 8oz Sirloin steak, handcooked chips and a glass of wine for £13.50. Diners on Saturdays can soak up the weekend from 12pm till 4pm with Bottomless Brunch, a choice of tasty brunch options with the option of unlimited Bloody Mary or Prosecco. The restaurant also offers a special Sunday roast menu, where kids eat free and meals start from £10. With live music on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights, there are lots of reasons to give this place a go. Great quality food, bubbles, beer and a brilliant atmosphere – what’s not to like?

Go Al Fresco! Summer has finally arrived and it’s time to head out for bit of al fresco dining. Who doesn’t love a picnic or “pique-nique” as it first appeared in the 1692 edition of the “Origines de la Langue Française”. The piquenique was a kind of French version of the “bring your own” style meal, with everyone contributing a course or wine. The first reference in English in 1748, suggested the “picnic” was a meal eaten outdoors but a more elegant affair than the traditional farm-worker’s meal eaten during a break from the harvesting. Whatever its origins,
most of us can’t resist the lure of a sunny afternoon in the park or by the river. The challenge for us, of course, is the Great British summer weather. As soon as the sun comes out and the grass is dry enough to sit on, we need to be ready to seize the moment, grab the picnic rug and head out. Take a break from the traditional cheese & pickle and meat-paste sandwich staples and try one of these really simple, but a bit special, picnic suggestions to make the most of those fleeting summer days.

Picnic Sandwich Loaf This is one of my favourite picnic sandwiches, inspired by the young Irish singer and foodie, Donal Skehan. It is a bit more effort than your usual butty but well worth it (amount of filling does depend on the size of your loaf!) 1 long ciabatta loaf, sliced in half lengthways Handful of baby spinach leaves Few slices of roasted red pepper from a jar 4 slices prosciutto or Serrano ham Handful of basil Ball of Mozzarella, sliced Half a red onion, finely sliced 3 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp balsamic vinegar 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp Dijon mustard Slice the ciabatta loaf in half lengthways, brush with olive oil on the cut surface and place, crust side down, under a hot grill for a few minutes until slightly browned and lightly toasted. Put the olive oil, balsamic vinegar, garlic and mustard in a bowl, then whisk them together until combined. Drizzle the bottom slice with about half the dressing and then arrange the rest of the ingredients in layers, starting with the spinach and red onion. Drizzle over the rest of the dressing
and place the other half of the ciabatta on top. Press down on the sandwich to squash all the layers together, wrap in greaseproof paper or baking parchment and tie it together with string. If you have something suitable to place on top for half an hour (I used a heavy wooden chopping board) that helps to stop the sandwich coming apart when sliced. Cut and serve in slices for the perfect picnic snack
Easy Lamb Koftas If you have a portable BBQ or can find a disposable one, add a hot dish to your picnic with these really simple Koftas. 500g minced lamb 2 tsp ground cumin 1 tsp ground coriander Handful of chopped fresh Coriander 3 fat garlic cloves crushed 2 tsps dried Chilli Flakes (or chopped fresh red chillies) 1 tbsp chopped mint Salt and freshly ground black pepper oil for brushing Place all the ingredients in a large mixing bowl and combine well. Divide into 8 balls, then roll each ball on a board to form a sausage shape. Thread onto 4 metal skewers and brush with oil. Cook on a hot griddle or on your portable
barbecue for 4/5 mins each side. Ensure the meat is well sealed before turning to ensure they don’t stick to the grill. Serve with natural yoghurt, salad and flatbreads.
Portable Raspberry Ripple Cheesecake How do you transport a cheesecake in a picnic basket? Easy, make it in jar! 150g buttery biscuit (I used Fox’s Butter Crinkles) 150g cream cheese 150g double cream 5 tbsp icing sugar 2 tsp vanilla extract 500g raspberries 6 smallish lidded jars (jam jars for example) Blitz the biscuits to crumbs in a blender or place in a freezer bag or similar and crush with a rolling pin. Divide the biscuits between the jars. Whisk the cream cheese, cream, 4 tbsp icing sugar and vanilla extract until softly whipped. Tip half the raspberries and the remaining sugar into another bowl and purée with a fork. Ripple the purée through the cream and divide between the jars. Top each cheesecake with remaining raspberries, secure the lids and chill until it’s time to go. Transport in a cool box or bag.

Even greater circulation for the Notts Guided Walks booklets As always we’re busy at Friends of Wollaton Park, this time cleaning up the worldfamous Camellia House and making new flower beds to enhance the area. In previous months we have repaired and erected new fencing and cleared some shrub-weed. Plans are going ahead for the restoration of the old Kitchen Garden via the Council Steering Committee to open and re-plan it for full public access, with help (we hope) from outside funding, such as the Lottery Fund, local businesses and others. For those of you who don’t know, the Kitchen Garden is to the left and rear of Mr. Man’s and is the size of a couple of football pitches and more. It was used for supplying the Hall kitchens and had heated walls in order to grow pineapples and other exotics for his lordship. If you have any ideas as to what you would like to see erected in this area (a tearoom, café, small covered music venue, new herb gardens or allotments, the head gardener’s cottage refurbished, etc.) please use the contacts given below. We welcome any new ideas. Meanwhile thanks to all our friends. Anyone not a member of the FoWP group may join for the sum of £5.00 for an annual subscription by contact via email or phone. This covers insurance, parking on task days and various perks. Friends of Wollaton Park committee meet on the first Wednesday of every month and invite anyone interested in joining to contact wollatonpark@ hotmail.com or telephone Rob Kirkwood, Chair of the Group, on 07855-151658. Volunteer activities normally take place on the third Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Look for us on Facebook.

Such is the growing demand for the Notts Guided Walks booklet, its circulation for 2016 has been pushed up to nearly 7,000 across the County, backed by a comprehensive web-site. Once again generously funded mainly by the Big Lottery, the Partnership has distributed its booklets to County and City libraries, information centres, visitor centres and country parks throughout the County. Most of the walks are short – up to about 4 or 6 miles, but with a few of 7 to 8 miles. As the booklets contain a large section of Health Walks for less able or recovering walkers, many health centres will receive copies too. These shorter walks are taken by trained leaders and organised by the county boroughs as part of a national scheme. Each of these guided walks will also be featured on the Notts Guided Walks’ website at www.nottsguidedwalks.co.uk which is updated with new walks during the year. It contains several well-illustrated selfguided walks in attractive areas for those who prefer to walk at their own pace, using downloaded instructions. Click on the ‘SelfGuided’ section of the web-site for further information. Just a small amount of regular exercise can make a huge improvement to a sedentary lifestyle, especially when linked to the friendly social outdoor atmosphere of a small walking group. Life is good for walkers!

Magazines is 10 Still going strong and getting stronger thanks to all our advertisers, readers and contributors. It’s hard to believe it was 10 years ago that we started ng magazines, or ‘ng5’ as we were known back then!!
With us from the start... “I set up my business at the same time as ng mags and have been with them right from the start. They have been the best form of advertising for me, and the staff are always friendly and ready to help, such a useful magazine”. Mark Maggs - All Weathers Plumbing
“I met Cat & Ali 10 years ago when our business manager at the bank introduced us. They have always been good to me and I get a lot of customers from the mags. Some have been with me the whole 10 years and I’m still getting regular ones now” Andy Crowley - AKJ Contracts.
10 years of helping local businesses, providing a service to our readers and supporting the local community, it has been an amazing journey. We started distributing the ng5 in Arnold in May 2006 to 5000 homes and businesses, and I mean distributing - we used to post all the mags ourselves in the early days. This would be impossible now because we deliver 8 magazines to 93,000 so rely on a lot of our readers who have become distributors for us. We would like to say a great big thank you to all our readers, distributors, contributors and advertisers, without whom this would not have been possible.

Carlton Male Voice Choir
We have the Flint MVC coming on 16th July for a joint concert with us at St. Paul's Church, Carlton and on the 23rd July we are singing at the Bonnington Theatre on High Street Arnold for the Mayor's Charity.
Bingham and District Choral Society Following our Spring Concert performed jointly with Southwell Choral Society in Southwell Minster on 7th May, we hope to round off a successful year with a short, four-week singing course. This would be an ideal opportunity for non-members to get a flavour of singing with the choir and perhaps help them to decide whether they might like to join us for our 2016-2017 season beginning in September. Provisional dates for the short course are 18th May, 1st, 8th and 15th June. It will be informal and fun, culminating in a small concert for family and friends on the last evening. Guy Turner, our Musical Director, will be in charge and the sessions will take place at Carnarvon Primary School, Nursery Road, Bingham NG13 8EH from 7.15 to 9.30 pm. The total cost will be £20 per person. If you are interested or would like to find out more, please contact Janet Chapman on 0115 9332834.
Eastwood Collieries’ Male Voice Choir is one of a handful of original colliery
male voice choirs surviving in the country. No stranger to prestigious venues such as the Royal Concert Hall and Albert Hall in Nottingham, Derby Cathedral and the Royal Albert Hall in London, the choir is equally at home in more modest settings. We especially enjoy the intimacy that promotes a very real emotional connection between choristers and audience - as well as allowing a sense of fun to develop at the appropriate moment! We delight in helping local charities raise much needed funds for their own needs. The choir has a very busy 2016 and in the next couple of months will be performing at: Alfreton Grange Arts College (21 May); Belper Arts Festival (St Peter’s Church 28 May); St Mary’s Church, Eastwood (5 June) with guests Braintree Male Voice Choir. Visit the web site at www.ecmvc.org – and come along and give us a try – new members always welcome!

Flash Bang Wallop!
Musicians get to bang on their own bass drum A year of fund-raising has enabled West Bridgfordbased Nottingham Concert Band to buy its own bass drum. The instrument was put through its paces on Saturday during a concert in Gedling’s All Hallows Church. ‘The concert was called A Splash of Spring Colour so we had great fun choosing a colour-themed programme,’ says Music Director Robert Parker. ‘And, to mark the drum’s debut, we played a medley from the musical Half a Sixpence. Remember the line ‘bang it on the big bass drum’ from Flash Bang Wallop? Well, the audience did!’ Nottingham Concert Band’s ‘drum fund’ was supported by Notts County Councillors Liz Plant and Gordon Wheeler, who both made donations from their Divisional Fund allowances. Now in its 25th year, Nottingham Concert Band is an independent community wind-band comprising sixty or so adult members across woodwind, brass and percussion sections. Rehearsals are held weekly in West Bridgford and enquiries about membership and concerts are always welcome call Jeff or Jill on 01949 860126, e-mail music@ nottinghamconcertband.org or log-on to www. nottinghamconcertband.org

in three rural areas of Nottinghamshire can now receive news, information and appeals from their local police team straight to their mobile phone, thanks to a new text messaging pilot launched this month.
Anyone living in the Bassetlaw, Newark and Sherwood areas can register to receive free text message alerts from officers about issues affecting their area, including information about recent incidents and advice to help them avoid becoming victims of crime. Nottinghamshire Police have launched the pilot thanks to funding provided by the Nottinghamshire Police and Crime Commissioner, Paddy Tipping. Mr Tipping said: “Many people living and working in rural areas struggle to receive information from their local police in a timely enough way to be able to protect themselves as they are so heavily reliant on unstable mobile internet connections to access information online, through social media and by email.
Service thousands of local people at the click of a button, bringing officers closer to the communities they serve and improving how they let local people know about the work being done to tackle rural crime in their area.” The pilot will be run using the Neighbourhood Alert community messaging system which Nottinghamshire Police already use to share information via email with tens of thousands of residents and businesses across Nottinghamshire. How to register Anyone in Nottinghamshire can register to receive free email and text message alerts from Nottinghamshire Police by visiting www.nottinghamshire. police.uk/alert There is no cost for receiving alerts by either text message or email and anyone registering will have complete control over what kind of information they receive, how often they receive it and whether they also receive alerts from other organisations using Neighbourhood Alert in Nottinghamshire.
“This new text messaging service will allow Nottinghamshire Police to share information with Special Constabulatory Recruitment - If you would like to find out more about becoming a Special Constable and our pre-recruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links.
