MASALA j u n c t i o n

AN ABSOLUTE GEM THAT WON’T BREAK THE BANK! After a three year break from the restaurant trade, Naj Aziz is back with a bang. Using his 25 years of multi award winning restaurant experience (The Indian and MemSaab), he has launched Masala Junction. Situated in the old Natwest bank on the junction between Mansfield Road and Hucknall Road in Carrington/Mapperley Park, the restaurant offers authentic Indian dishes in a building with both history and character. A year in the making, Naj bought the bank back in March 2015, and with the help of architect and sister in law Lyn NiblockAziz, he has transformed the building into the stunning restaurant it is today. Truly a family affair, Mr Aziz’s brother is a partner in the venture, his niece designed all the graphics, his cousin is the manager and his nephew works front of house. The love and passion the family have for the restaurant filters down into everything they do. I took my own brood, including children aged 5, 7 and 16, there for my birthday. The little ones don’t like food that is too spicy (korma kids) and my eldest is a vegetarian that doesn’t really eat vegetables so I was slightly worried! Well, I needn’t have been. Isram (Naj’s brother in law) who looked after us, was amazing. He suggested korma for the children, even though it wasn’t on the menu and poppadoms and chutneys appeared pretty quickly to keep the hungry children busy. To start we had the paneer and broccoli tikka (£6.50) and the sigri kebab selection (for 2) that included chicken tikka, lamb

chops and rehmi kebab (£12.50). It was exquisitely presented with vibrant pickles, purees and a range of garnishes. The chicken tikka went down a treat with my daughter (7) and the paneer was loved by my 16 year old too, a very successful start to our meal. For mains we had the junction jalfrezi (£11.95), lamb rogan josht (£12.95), vegetable biryani (£13.50) and of course the chicken korma, served with pulao rice (£3.50) and a selection of nan breads (£2.50 - £2.95). All the food was delicious and cooked to perfection. The keema nan, always a good indicator, was packed with really tasty meat. Stuffed to the max we still managed to order a few puddings. The chocolate fondant was divine and the coconut icecream, served in a half coconut with all the trimmings was devoured by my 5 year old. All in all a fantastic evening. If you are looking for that wow factor then look no further than Masala Junction. It has it all. © Cat Hedges

DEADLINE

JAN 31ST 2017

Why do we eat Turkey at Christmas? Over recent years one might think we have become a little tired of the traditional turkey, with lots of celebrity chefs offering a range of alternatives - going back to the traditional Dickensian goose, or a stunning beef rib roast, duck, fish or more exotic combinations from cuisines around the world. But for most of us, Christmas simply wouldn’t be Christmas without a turkey, around 76% of us have it as the centrepiece of our festive meal. It wasn’t always the case of course, turkeys were first brought to Britain around 1526 but it remained a rare luxury. Instead, people ate goose but also roast swan, pheasant, peacock and even roast boar’s head decorated with holly and fruit. Rumour has it that Henry VIII was the first English king to eat turkey, although Edward

VII is said to have made eating turkey fashionable at Christmas. Indeed, turkey was pretty much a luxury right up until the 1950s when they became more widely available and refrigerators became commonplace, and now 10 million of them are eaten in the UK every year. Apparently, and this won’t come as much of a surprise to most of us… it is women who are mostly responsible for preparing the Christmas lunch with 67% of British women being in charge of the feast every year, although most of us don’t go for our first “solo” attempt until we are at least 34! Whatever you are eating for your Christmas lunch, or enjoying over the seasonal holidays, make the most of it, and soon the nights will be getting lighter again.

Salmon with Clementines, Vodka and Honey, with a Horseradish Crème Fraiche. Ingredients For the Fish... zest & juice 4 clementines & 1 orange, 2 further clementines sliced 100ml vodka 5 tbsp clear honey 1tsp caster sugar 1kg side of salmon, bones removed (oil the skin side before dressing) For the Crème Fraiche... 200g crème fraîche 2 tbsp creamed horseradish small pack chives, snipped salt and pepper to taste

To make the crème fraîche, mix all the ingredients together in a bowl, season with black pepper and a little salt (hold back a few chives to sprinkle on the top) When the salmon is ready, reheat the remaining glaze (add a splash of water if too thick) and brush it over the top .

Salt Rubbed Turkey with Clementine and Bay Butter (would serve approx 8) If, like most of us, you prefer a traditional turkey for lunch on the big day, why not keep the clementine theme and try this twist on the classic Christmas Day roast?

Method

Ingredients 11-12lb oven-ready turkey with giblets removed For the Salt Mix... 5 bay leaves, crumbled if dry, torn if fresh 1 tbsp fresh thyme leaf 1tsp black peppercorns 85g/ 3oz coarse sea salt zest of 1 orange

Heat oven to 180C/160C fan/gas 4. Line a baking tray with oiled baking parchment and place the (oiled) salmon skin side down in the middle. Slice the salmon into 8 fillets, cutting through the flesh but not the skin. Brush the salmon with the glaze, making sure you get in between the gaps. Save some for brushing on at the end. Lay the clementine slices down the centre of the fish, and bake for 20 mins.

For the Clementine and Bay Butter... 100g/ 4oz butter softened zest and juice 1 clementine splash of sherry large thyme sprig, leaves picked 2 bay leaves (fresh or dried)

Bring the clementine zest and juice, vodka and honey to a gentle bubble in a pan, season a little. Simmer for approx 10 mins until reduced, add clementine slices and simmer for a further 5 mins until soft and sticky. Remove fruit slices and set aside. Bubble the liquid until thickened and glossy.

Method Up to 24 hrs before, salt the turkey. Grind all the ingredients to make a wet salt. Sit the turkey in its roasting tin, gently rub a little vegetable oil over the bird and generously rub the salt all over. Cover with cling film and return to the fridge. To make the clementine & bay butter, mash all the ingredients together in a bowl with some seasoning and set aside. (Can be made up to 2 days ahead or frozen for up to a month) Remove the turkey from the fridge 1 hr before you want to cook it. Wipe the excess salt rub off the bird with kitchen roll and pat it dry. When you are ready to cook the bird, gently push your fingers under the breast skin from the neck cavity and loosen it from the meat, taking care not to break the skin. Rub some of the butter on the flesh under the skin and then bring the skin back over. Take the rest of the butter and rub it all over the outside of the Turkey. Cover loosely with foil and cook according to calculated cooking time. Brussels Sprouts on the Side

Do you love them or hate them? Apparently, it’s all down to your genes. Some people can taste a bitter chemical in this traditional veg and some can’t. If you want to serve them to a mixed group, how about combining sultanas, toasted pine nuts, caramelised onions, sherry and a drizzle of honey for something a bit exotic, or perhaps try shredding them and stir-frying with garlic and smoked streaky bacon (just don’t burn the garlic!)

Carry on Karting! WIN one of 5 x £80 activity vouchers* Langar Karting and Quad Centre is one of the largest activity centres in the country, offering a huge range of activities for all age ranges. I took four boys for a day of karting and quad biking; what a fantastic experience! We received a really warm welcome from Chris, the manager. The centre is well organised and very professional. You really feel you are in safe hands. The massive indoor karting circuit is great. After a safety briefing, we were let lose in the 270cc/50mph karts. There is a 150 foot long flyover bridge as well as a tricky hair-pin corner. You also get feedback after your go, giving you all the crucial stats so you can see who went the fastest. The boys absolutely loved it. “awesome”, “mint” and “really good fun” were their words. We then moved outside to the quad bikes. These were also a really good buzz and the boys were in their element. As well as quads the centre also has 400cc off road buggies, archery, laser clay pigeon shooting and paintballing, all ideal for team building and corporate events or stag and hen parties. There were a couple of parties going on while we were there and they looked like they were having a whale of a time. Chris, the manager said; “individuals and small groups are also very welcome. Our junior quad biking

parties are particularly popular.” (Prebooking is advised.) With Christmas approaching Langar Karting and Quad Centre is the ideal choice for Christmas parties or why not treat somebody to an Activity Gift Voucher? The centre is only 15 minutes drive from Nottingham City Centre. It took us about 30 minutes from Arnold but it is a lovely drive and well worth it. We are already planning another trip. © Gary Monks

kids Special Recognition for Local Volunteer

WIN

£30 One4All voucher

Volunteers from Wollaton and Stapleford were amongst those from all over Notts who were honoured in September at a celebratory tea party given by Girlguiding Nottinghamshire. Held at Portland College in Mansfield, the event gave new County Commissioner Jackie Brocklehurst the opportunity to present some 60 members and supporters with awards to mark their exceptional commitment and achievements. These included Hemlock Castle Division’s Christine Atkin (40 Year Long Service Award), Jane Hessey (30 Year Long Service Award) and Moira Sibert (County Brooch). In addition to presenting Long Service Awards to over 20 women who have devoted a combined total of 700+ years to Guiding – and accepting her own 30year service brooch - Jackie Brocklehurst gave Oak Leaf Awards to 10 Leaders and the Nottinghamshire Star to three nonuniformed volunteers in recognition of outstanding commitment to local Guiding. Four Queen’s Guide Awards were given special mention, whilst five County brooches and nine ‘Thanks’ badges were presented as personal gestures of appreciation. Adult supporters are essential if units are to remain active, and enquiries about volunteering are always welcome: call the county office on 0115 987 7220, e-mail countycommissioner@ girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk or visit www.girlguidingnottinghamshire.org.uk

Nottingham Flower Club

Nottingham Flower Club have enjoyed a busy summer starting with the Club Competitions in early June. Both categories were won by Diana Knight, "Ice Cube" and "Fabulous Foliage". We then had a fabulous demonstration by Sue Spencer of Rotherham entitled 'Rhapsody of Flowers" at the end of June and a talk by the Fuchsia Society in early July which was most informative. The Annual Club Dinner later that month was well attended and very enjoyable as always. Our final responsibility was creating a number of fabulous displays for the Holme Pierrepont Flower Show. Several of our talented members created displays in various rooms and a team led by our Chairman, Jane Walden decorated the whole staircase.

he: Don’t Breat ! Oh Really? Cinema prices can be a right rip off, especially in screenings of Don’t Breathe; not because it’s a bad movie, far from it, but because throughout the film I was glued to the edge of my seat; I mean I had to pay for three quarters of a seat that I didn’t even use. But to be honest, the price was more than worth it to see this heart pounding ride of breathtaking intensity. Fede Alvarez’s Don’t Breathe is one hell of a ride to experience. The story of Don’t Breathe has you following three thieves that decide to rob a blind man’s home, easy score right? Well, not so much, when it turns out said blind man, powerfully played by Stephan Lang, is a force of nature ex-veteran who would give the Terminator a run for his money. Suffice to say things don’t go as planned and our thieves are placed in the most terrifying game of Mouse Trap ever played. The movie is incredibly well paced, after a very small amount of setup, the tension of this film is allowed to rise and rise until it is almost unbearable; the sound of a pin dropping in the cinema could not only be heard, but would have probably given us all heart attacks. However what little setup there is does a great job of making you relate and really care about the thieves: Rocky (Jane Levy), Alex (Dylan Minnette) and Money (Daniel Zovatto). I went into this film thinking they’d just be your stereotypical douchebags that you can’t wait to see get pummelled by the unstoppable force of Stephan Lang, and while that is the case for one of this trio, I got surprisingly connected to the other two and felt genuine fear for their lives and real fist pumping hope for their survival. But when this blind man does begin his murderous shenanigans it is executed with a surprising amount of thought. The unique concept of the film allows for some really interesting and fresh scenarios to play out, adding to the horror as you really have no idea how anyone could escape from

his home. A home he knows like the back of his hand without having to see it. On top of the films well thought out and constructed scenarios, the way the camera was used not only sets this film apart from others in its genre, but it also helps keep the audience engrossed in the unstoppable tide of tension. Overall this film is great. It not only brings a fresh and unique twist to this played out genre, it also portrays the interesting and new scenarios of having a blind man as your terrifying antagonist in innovative and amazing ways. If you want a nonstop tension fuelled ride filled with characters you actually care about and a new, interesting and more than formidable villain, Don’t Breathe is the perfect movie for you. Don’t Breathe = 8/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Family Members Increasingly Abuse Lasting Powers of Attorney A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a document designed to give legal authority to someone you trust, to make decisions on your behalf relating to your property, affairs and health and welfare if you lose capacity and are unable to make decisions for yourself. However, a survey published by KPMG has revealed that in 2015 there was a 384% increase in the level of fraud committed within families relating to LPAs.

The survey identified that younger relatives were often the fraudsters, taking advantage of elderly relatives, with a total of £1.7 million stolen in the UK in 2014 from elderly relatives, by younger relatives, who held Power of Attorney over their finances.

Attorneys are not acting in the best interests of the Donor. In a recent case a man in his 50s stole most of the financial assets from his 86 year old mother, resulting in £39,000 being owed to his mother’s care home. In this case the Court of Protection decided that the son had not acted in his mother’s best interests because his stubborn refusal to pay her care home fees put her at risk of losing her placement and being evicted from the care home. As a result the LPA was revoked. The abuse of LPAs is likely to increase because of an ageing population, the value of house prices and an increase in dementia sufferers. Although revoking LPAs can help victims to protect their best interests, nothing can be done to repair the relationship between family members, or the financial damage incurred by the victim if the fraudster is unable to pay back the stolen money.

If you need advice about revoking an LPA contact our Wills and Probate team at Rothera Sharp on 0800 088 6270.

The same survey found that the baby boomer generation-(those aged 45 or over)-were responsible for 72% of the fraud committed, probably because the majority of elderly people choose their children to be their Attorney. As a result of this, the Court of Protection seeks to protect the interests of the victim, by revoking LPAs where

corner, it’s important to consider the growing problem of online fraud which happens often at this time of year.

You need to know how to stay safe whilst online to avoid the fraudsters, who could potentially ruin your Christmas. Online Shopping: For most people with busy schedules around this time of year, the common solution is to opt for online shopping, however, with this, comes risk. For example, items may not always appear as advertised, or, worse still, not show up at all. Try to stick to well-known retailers and always check if the item you’re buying can be returned. Children with new gadgets: They’ve been begging you all year and you finally surprise your child with a new laptop, but be aware of the dangers and get your child clued up on being cyber safe. Make sure you get good anti-virus software, but also check out the www. getsafeonline.org website, which has excellent free advice, as does the Child Exploitation Online Protection Agency’s www.thinkyouknow.co.uk site

When using apps like eBay and Depop, it is important to be aware of scammers. More often than not, a seller will want you to transfer the money using a safe payment page such as ‘’Paypal’’ or ‘’Depop wallet’’ so, if needs be, a refund can be issued. Alarm bells should start to ring if the seller wants to use a different method. Make sure you always check existing feedback given to the seller, as this can be a very good indicator of how reliable they are. If you are unfortunate enough to fall victim to online fraud over the Christmas period, don’t hesitate to contact Action Fraud on 0300 123 040 or at www. actionfraud.police.uk

TAROSCOPES Libra (5 of swords, 9 of swords, Queen of wands)

There’s a woman you know. She’s sharp and demanding. You play out scenarios with her in your head: stressful ones. This is going to change, potentially in an unexpected way. Remember: your relationship has been fractured for a reason. You may not see, or like, it now, but there is a lesson concealed in your troubled rapport. Let the tension subside, because the worst is over. Heads high… her influence is moving into the rear view mirror.

Scorpio (3 of swords, 5 of cups, 2 of cups)

Betrayal is a wound with layers of pain. Then it forms a scar, usually a deep one, to prevent more of the same… But you’re going to meet someone this winter who reminds you of the positive power of a twosome. It might be a romance; it might be the rekindling of a relationship that’s waned; it might be a new friend or ally. But this relationship will be truly, mutually beneficial. A lifelong connection. Treasure it.

Sagittarius (King of cups, King of coins, Queen of wands) Everything ebbs and flows, nothing stays the same; good news when you’re down but a source of anxiety when you’re up. This winter, you are on the ‘up’ in the two big areas of your life: emotions and resources. You’re mastering how you feel about something which was once painful, and you’re realising you can make money and protect your security even in tough conditions. You’re a survivor. Revel in your strengths; nothing can stop you this season. Capricorn (8 of coins, The High Priestess, The Hierophant)

Ever the ‘climber’, you never stop planning and forging onwards. The path has been hard, but you’ve mastered much; what once was awkward now comes naturally. And yet there are still challenges to face. Perhaps the biggest one yet: what do YOU really want? Is the path you’re on as resonant and fulfilling as it was? Soul search your inner, authentic self this winter. Is 2017 a pivot for changing course?

Don’t settle for a diet plan, upgrade your health instead With the rise of food trends such as “eating clean” and “lean in 15”, nutrition is fast becoming a hot topic. We asked Nottingham based nutritionist, Eva Humphries, to give us the low down on what you can expect from a nutritional therapy consultation.

Don’t expect a diet plan

comprehensive assessment of your relative requirements are made so the advice given is completely unique to you. Your digestive health, energy levels, hormones and eating habits are all considered alongside any symptoms you may be presenting with. This may sound like a lot of data but in reality you just get to spend an hour talking about yourself.

Let’s get the biggest misconception out of the way: the end result of nutritional therapy is not a diet plan. Sure, you will get some recommendations of what to eat but not in a prescriptive manner. Behind every nutritionist is a real person that, occasionally, eats cake, chocolate and all of that tasty stuff you will likely crave. We know what a perfect diet looks like but also understand this may not be realistic for everyone.

Evidence based science

For this reason, there are no perfect diet plans, only steady progress that will get you closer to your health goals.

What can nutritional therapy help with?

It’s personal There is another huge issue with diet plans: they don’t take into account individual requirements. During a nutritional therapy consultation, a

Qualified nutritional therapists will look for the clinical research to support your health goals. This nerdy data, is the real scientific evidence that underpins each recommendation made. So, if we tell you to eat two more portions of green veg a day, be sure to know there is a research paper to back up that recommendation.

Nutritional therapy is about upgrading your overall health. Energy, digestive and skin health, as well as cognitive function may all be improved with the help of a qualified nutritional therapist.

Eva Humphries is a Nottingham based nutritionist, founder of Wholefood Warrior and appreciator of good food. Eva holds health and wellbeing talks on topics including the basics of nutrition, improving energy and detoxing. Visit www.wholefoodwarrior.co.uk for more information.

Home Grown Olympic Talent Shines 5,812 That’s the number of miles from Nottingham to

Rio de Janeiro. A total of 24 athletes made the trip from the East Midlands competing in various events from equestrian to table tennis. Here are five atheletes that impressed at this year’s games.

Michael Whitaker – Equestrian

Chris Adcock – Badminton Competing at the Olympics from the age of 24 in Los Angeles, Michael’s equestrian achievements include a Team Gold medal and individual Silver medal at the European Championships in 1989. Whitaker’s game regrettably ended due to his horse Cassionato showing symptoms of colic. Despite this, Michael did manage to come 12th in the team jumping finals, and finished 8th in the individual qualifiers. Going into the Olympics, Chris had already claimed a mixed doubles gold at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow with his wife Gabby, and went into the games with high hopes of collecting a medal. Unfortunately, the 27-year-old from Ravenshead crashed out to Polish opponents Robert Mateusiak and Nadiezda Zieba. Adcock is expecting to compete at Tokyo in 2020, with the ambition of reaching a final. Helen Richardson-Walsh – Hockey

Sam Walker – Table Tennis Sam’s journey to Rio began at just two years old, his dad using a piano stool to allow him to see the table tennis table. Just 3 months prior to the games, Walker was part of the England team that picked up Bronze at the World Team Championships in Malaysia. That success continued into Rio, Sam and his team (Drinkhall and Pitchford) breezing past first round opponents France before losing 3-0 against eventual gold medallists China. Worksop-born Walker will have his sights firmly set on Tokyo 2020 to put some wrongs right. Molly Renshaw – Swimming

Although not born in Nottingham, Helen spent her childhood in the NG area, playing for West Bridgford and Sherwood Hockey Clubs before joining Leicester Hockey Club and eventually earning her first England cap in 1999, age 17. A bronze in London 4 years ago was the perfect platform for Helen, and sister Kate (captain) to launch their 2016 medal bid. The squad had a rollercoaster journey to the final, before beating the Netherlands in a penalty shoot out to claim the team’s first ever Gold medal.

20-year-old Molly Renshaw competed in her first games this summer after agonisingly missing the qualifying time in 2012. Born in Mansfield, Renshaw set a new record of 2:22:33 while qualifying for the 200m breaststroke final. While Molly swam a superb semi-final, she struggled to keep up with Japanese champion Rie Kaneto, falling almost 3 seconds behind the leader, finishing 6th. A young athlete with plenty of talent, the future of British swimming looks bright.

An amazing free day in July set up by the City Council Neighbour Community Office and volunteers, including FoWP. The Sherriff spent the day giving out prizes and enjoying herself while families picnicked on the lawns. This was a trial run – next year will be even bigger and better with more events and acts. Sponsorship came from fifty-two local shops and businesses, including contributions of food and drink and much else. While it is a local Wollaton event, visitors came from all over. The only cost was a £2 parking ticket – a superb day out for the family! Save the date! STOP PRESS...Wollaton Hall and Park were awarded the national Green Flag for providing excellent surroundings to the public and in recognition of hard work by both the council and the volunteer groups. Congratulations are in order to all! Anyone not a member of the FoWP group may join for the sum of £5 for an annual subscription via email or phone. This covers insurance, parking on task days and various perks such as investigating rooms the public don’t often see. Friends of Wollaton Park committee meet on the first Wednesday of every month and invite anyone interested in joining to contact wollatonpark@hotmail. com or telephone Rob Kirkwood, Chair of the Group, on 07855-151658. Volunteer activities normally take place on the third Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Look for us on Facebook.
