White-tabby Apple, with her kittens Custard and Crumble who were born outside, were rescued by local charity Animal Accident Rescue Unit. Meanwhile, black heavilypregnant Mali was dumped outside a Nottingham police station. She was taken to a vet that night and promptly gave birth to five kittens!

issued a reminder to gamers to ‘stay safe online’ following the release of the Pokémon Go smartphone app in the UK. The app, which is currently the top grossing app on both the Apple and Android download charts, encourages gamers to discover in-game characters in the ‘real world’ using the location services on their smartphones. Users travel to real world locations where Pokémon characters appear on-screen through their smartphones camera. Gamers can then attempt to ‘catch’ each character and battle other gamers in the real world to progress within the game. Detective Inspector Pete Quinn from Nottinghamshire Police said: “The risks that this app presents are not new or unique and, as with any other social media, there is always the potential to put yourself at risk by letting your guard down and coming into contact with people you don’t know – both online and in the real world.

sure they know what apps their children are using, who they are speaking to online and where they may be travelling to use these apps.” Nottinghamshire Police is also asking gamers to be considerate towards others after officers were required to respond to a report of torchlight being spotted in the south Nottinghamshire village of Normanton-on-Soar in the early hours of Tuesday 12 July 2016. Officers travelled on blue lights – their most urgent level of response – to investigate the report from worried residents where they discovered two teenage boys out searching for Pokémon. It was established that no offences had been committed. For more information and advice about helping you or your children to stay safe online, please visit the Nottinghamshire Police website at: www.nottinghamshire.police. uk/advice/prevention

“We are also appealing to parents to have an open and honest conversation with their children who may be using the app to remind them about the potential risks, as well as making Special Constabulatory Recruitment - If you would like to find out more about becoming a Special Constable and our pre-recruitment awareness events please contact us on 101 800 2429 or visit www.nottinghamshire.police.uk and follow the Specials links.

The Tower A Room With A View Places the public rarely see – Friends of Wollaton Park cleaned out the top tower room in July, making it available for tours.

WIN....

A PAIR OF TICKETS

for the opening night performance on 7 November

As Pete Forster said, a good day for us and the Hall. The task group got access to one of the most under-utilised and special spaces in the hall. It exhibits features from the build date and some features added during the Wyattville updates in the 19th century. Slowly the Hall is opening up its secrets. See Facebook for more pictures. July was a very busy month, with a fantastically successful and free Arts Festival, a well-attended Tree Walk (trees you never knew existed!), and the nationally prestigious Green Flag award to encourage future plans. Details of these will follow in forthcoming NG8 issues. Anyone not a member of the FoWP group may join for the sum of £5.00 for an annual subscription by contact via email or phone. This covers insurance, parking on task days and various perks. Friends of Wollaton Park committee meet on the first Wednesday of every month and invite anyone interested in joining to contact wollatonpark@hotmail. com or telephone Rob Kirkwood, Chair of the Group, on 07855-151658. Volunteer activities normally take place on the third Saturday and fourth Thursday of the month. Everyone is welcome. Look for us on Facebook.

Juicing has become the latest trend for those wishing to rid their bodies of toxins. “Detoxing” is touted as the newest way to leading a healthier, slimmer life, with companies offering 3 to 7 day juice cleanses and many more selling detox products. Is juicing really that beneficial? Can we detox without it? Before we begin, let’s take a look at what a toxin is: A toxin is a molecule that is capable of inducing disease in the body. Toxins enter the body via the air, food, water and through the skin and exist both indoors and outdoors. In a nutshell, it doesn't matter what you do, you will encounter toxins in your daily life. Luckily, we are equipped to get rid of toxins through a process called detoxification. Detoxification doesn’t just get rid of environmental toxins, it also shimmies out molecules from the body that have served their purpose. For example, those hormones that cause PMT, detoxification gets rid of them. Needless to say, it is a pretty important process. Do you really need a juice detox for this process to take place? The simple answer is: no you don’t, detoxifying is an everyday process. The major advantage of juicing comes

from not ingesting so many chemicals whilst on a juice fast. Think about it. Every meal has been replaced by a juice. You are probably avoiding that toxic artificial sweetener from your afternoon fizzy drink, that preservative laced bread is no longer an issue and your evening take away is non existent. This makes perfect sense for the 3 to 7 day juice cleanse but then you go back to loading up on everything you missed, including those toxins that just happen to be in your comfort foods. If detoxification is truly your mission, that juice cleanse won’t even scratch the surface. Instead of juice cleansing, focus your attention on how you can reduce your toxic load. This means everything that passes your lips, what you breathe in and even what goes on your skin (and yes, there is a good reason hippies don’t wear deodorant). Even more importantly, ensure that your gut and liver function is optimal. Without these organs, getting rid of toxins would be borderline impossible. Here are some tips & tricks to consider:

Avoid Toxins

Get rid of Toxins

• Filter water. • Wash all fruit and vegetables and buy organic where possible. • Ditch anything artificially sweetened. • Avoid sources of food additives. • Reduce your caffeine intake. • Don’t smoke - this one is obvious • Consider how much alcohol you really need. • Unless specifically advised by a doctor, over the counter medications such as ibuprofen, paracetamol, aspirin and the like are best avoided. • Switch to natural personal care products where possible.

• Load up on leafy greens. • Eat lightly cooked brassicas such as broccoli, brussel sprouts, cauliflower and cabbages. These may speed up detoxification. • Include herbs and spices where possible.. • Eat some good quality meat. Protein is essential for detoxification. • Drink plenty of filtered water. • Lose weight. Some toxins accumulate in fat so if you carry excess weight, weight loss is a necessity for detoxification. • Sweat it out. Some detoxification does happen through the skin • Sleep. 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep should be the aim.

These are part of the Happy Hour deal. (Happy Hour is 5-9pm Sunday to Friday and includes 2 for 1 on cocktails as well as these sharing starters) For mains we had the mother clucker burger (huge!) and the lobster ravioli (my dream dish.) Both really delivered on all levels. Yum! The kids chose their usual pizza (great size) from the kids menu which is great value at £5.95. This includes a main, side, veg, dessert and a drink. About to pop after two very generous courses, we ordered ice cream for dessert. The kids ordered fluffwich soldiers and chocolate dip. Mist and Mellow Fruitfulness As summer draws to a close and the nights become longer, the smell of Autumn is in the air. Harvest Festivals are celebrated, many of us are making jam and chutney by the lorry-load to use up the last of the summer fruits and those green tomatoes that never ripen, as well as all the windfall apples, plums and pears. Autumn also heralds a range of ancient festivals, Halloween of course, (the modern version largely imported from the US) but also a range of quirky local rituals that are still practised. In some villages, barrels of tar are set alight and paraded through

the main street, in some places cider is poured over apple tree roots and bizarrely dressed troupes ward off evil spirits with “Soul Cakes”. Halloween itself has its roots in a pagan Celtic festival “Samhain” and the Christian Festival of All Saints Day (All Hallows), when prayers were offered for the souls of the dead. Soon it will be Bonfire Night, with traditional toffee and warming soups and then, Winter will be upon us again. Make the most of the season of “mists and mellow fruitfulness” with these seasonal recipes.

Autumn Berry Flaugnarde

Fig and Dolcelatte Tarts

What better time than the end of Summer and the beginning of Autumn to use up the last of the soft fruits and berries in this delicious and easy dessert. Not quite a true Flaugnarde and a bit like a traditional cherry clafoutis, this is cheap to make and perfect for using up a glut.

Fresh figs are a fantastic and under-used addition to the Autumn table. Their high sugar content makes them perfect to serve with something strong and salty, like blue cheese or prosciutto.

Ingredients A little softened butter for greasing 400g or so of mixed seasonal berries (or you could use plums) For the batter:50g ground almonds 2 tbsp plain flour 100g golden caster sugar 2 eggs 2 egg yolks 250ml double cream Heat oven to 190oC fan or 170oC/ gas 5. Grease a 23cm flan dish or shallow pie dish (not loose bottomed) and scatter the berries over the base. Place all the batter ingredients in a mixing bowl and whisk until smooth, pour it over the fruits and bake for around 30 minutes until risen and golden brown. Serve warm with a drizzle of single cream.

(makes 6)

Ingredients 2 sheets filo pastry (22cm x 25cm square) A little melted butter 3 ripe figs 100g creamy blue cheese, I used Dolcelatte 1 tsp lemon juice 3 fresh sage leaves, finely chopped Sprinkling of ground paprika Preheat the oven to 190oC/Gas6. Brush two sheets of filo with butter and place on top of each other. Cut into 12 equal squares. Put the squares together in pairs on top of each other at a 45 degree angle (so they make a star shape). Press into the holes of a muffin tin or Yorkshire pudding tin. Bake in the oven for around 6/7 mins or until just golden brown and crisp (keep a close eye as they are so easy to burn!). Transfer to a baking tray. Chop the figs into small pieces and divide between the filo cups. Put the cheese, sage, lemon juice into a bowl. Mash down with a fork, season with black pepper, then spoon a small amount of the cheese

mixture on top of the fig. Sprinkle lightly with paprika. Bake in the oven for a further 5 minutes or until the cheese has just melted.

Apple “in and out” pudding Ingredients (1 apple per person) 4 evenly sized Bramley cooking apples 75g unsalted butter 75g soft brown sugar approx 1 teaspoon of cinnamon, approx half teaspoon freshly ground nutmeg 175g plain flour, cold water, 3 eggs, pinch salt, 450ml full fat milk (more or less) Pre-heat oven to around 200oC or 190oC fan oven. Peel (or not) and core apples. Cream together the butter and sugar and add the nutmeg and cinnamon, or whichever spices you are using. Fill the centre of the apples with this mixture and place them in a large buttered oven-proof dish. It needs to be a deep dish so the batter can rise to almost cover the apples. Blend the flour and salt with a little cold water and then add the eggs and enough milk to make a thick creamy batter (slightly thicker than a Yorkshire pudding batter). Pour this over the apples and bake in your pre-heated oven for around 45 minutes, until the apples are soft and oozy and the batter is risen. It should have a golden crisp surface and a soft centre. Serve immediately, with custard or cream. But beware, it will be

extremely hot!

O

n Sunday 10th July we arrived at Go Ape in Sherwood Pines Forest Park for our tree climbing, swinging and zip wire adventure. I took the family along, grandad, dad and two teenagers – all of whom should feel at home swinging through the trees. Our day started with a safety briefing, being strapped into a climbing style harness and then practising using the safety equipment, clipping onto the safety lines and swapping from one obstacle to another. After this we were set free to traverse the course by ourselves. We climbed a ladder up into the tree tops and then decided which out of two paths to take. The tree top trails involve swinging into giant cargo nets, crawling through barrel type tunnels, edging along tightrope wires, stepping across wooden slats, and much, much more. My favourite and worst moment was swinging across into a cargo net after dropping a few feet first. This was great for someone like me, who was determined to fight my fear of heights and have a great day with the family.

The whole adventure start to finish lasted around 3 hours and even though the site itself was busy we hardly ever got held up. All in all a fantastic day out with lots of laughs and monkeying around. A Baboon (10-15 years) costs £25 and a Gorilla (16 years +) costs £33. Go Ape was dreamed up by Tris and Becs back in 2001 while on holiday in France with their six month old baby. They came across a French family swinging through the trees and when they saw how much fun they were having came up with the idea of Go Ape. Since then they have built 30 courses all across the UK and have also added Segway experiences, Tree Top Junior Adventures and at one site a zip wire adventure. Lucky for us the Sherwood Pines location has the Tree Top Adventure for 10 years and above, the Tree Top Junior for 6-10 years, and the Forest Segway. For more information or to book a visit go to their website: www.goape.co.uk

of readers say they use the magazine... the vast majority say this is for finding local trade’s people and getting information on what’s happening in the local area. Competitions, recipes, history pages and restaurant reviews were also popular.

99.2%

of readers said the magazine met their needs, which is great news... we must be doing something right!

Those who used local trades out of the magazine were all pleased with the service they got. This is brilliant news for us, for our readers and for our advertisers. From foot practitioners to chimney sweeps, roofers to plumbers you have used them all. The overwhelming favourite section of the magazines is the free time. Finding out what’s on in your local area. Competitions came a close second and we are working hard to get new ones for you to enter all the time. We were flattered that when we asked you how we could improve the magazine over half said it was fine as it was. We have had some great suggestions for new items and over the next few months we will be working on introducing some of these like the Bonington Theatre listings, a colouring page for kids and more reviews and local areas of interest. One thing was clear from the feedback - you lot like a bargain. You want more vouchers, more discounts and more special deals. We will pass this on to our advertisers so keep your eyes peeled for those offers!! Once again thanks to everyone who completed a form. It really helps us to keep our magazines readable, keepable, loveable and useable. The NG Team

Bring a touch of the tropical to your garden this summer Canna Lilies – A summer garden essential! Canna Lilies are stand out performers in the summer garden. Available from garden centres and supermarkets they bring a touch of the tropical to your plot. These exotic beauties have lush bold flowers and their patterned leaves are architecturally stunning. Despite appearances however they are surprisingly easy to grow. Follow my tips to ensure you keep them flowering till the frosts and bursting back into bud next summer.

Get maximum blooms Cannas are happy in flower beds or pots but they always seem to perform at their best as the showy centre piece of a container display. Never deadhead them. The new flowering stem comes up through the old flower so keep your secateurs sheathed to ensure the longest flowering period. Despite their tropical appearance Cannas grow best in semi to full shade.

Bright sun causes the vibrant colours in their leaves and flowers to fade. This makes Cannas your ideal choice to brighten up a shady corner. They tolerate drought conditions. Growth is lusher and denser when grown in moist environments but they still perform brilliantly when things get a little dry. This combined with the fact they don’t need deadheading means they are the perfect flower if you are planning a few weeks away over the summer.

Winter care Lift the Canna rhizomes after the first frost. Pop them into pots and cover with compost. Keep the pots in a shed or garage over winter ensuring the soil stays slightly moist. Plants will start to send out shoots in Spring. As soon as these shoots are visible move the pots into a frost free greenhouse or porch. Once any fear of frost is passed the Cannas can go back into your garden.

Cannas are hot, exotic, tropical and easy to grow. A real summer scorcher!

f Justice o n w a D : n Super ma Batman Vs p Pack -U t r a t S s C D It’s here. The holy grail for nerds. The fight everyone has been waiting for. Expectations were high. The early reviews, brutal. With all this baggage I went to see this film expecting the worst. As the opening credits sprang up I crossed everything hoping this film would at least be good. But against all odds, 20 minutes into the film I couldn’t help but fall in love with it. This maybe because I’m a huge comic book nerd and still a gullible kid at heart but you know what, this movie ain’t that bad. In fact for me it was great and I am not ashamed to say it! After the events of Man of Steel, the issue of whether Superman is a force for good or ultimate destruction, is a hot topic. With half the public cheering on his exploits and the other hating his guts, it’s not an easy time for old Supes, especially when the Dark Knight himself, Bruce Wayne/ Batman, also ends up hating his guts and wants to put him down, for the good of the human race. The returning cast from Man of Steel were great once again. Laurence Fishburne, while short stay in this very packed film, was a great and refreshingly witty ray of light in the Daily Planet scenes and Henry Cavill’s return as the Son of Krypton was also really enjoyable to see. One of the biggest debates leading up to this film was whether Ben Affleck would be any good as Batman (or Batfleck). And once again the nerd rage was unwarranted. Affleck did a wonderful job in this movie. Playing the oldest Batman we have ever seen on the big screen today, Affleck gave a very believable interpretation of a Batman who’s been through a lot of trauma and disaster and has left with a fair share of his own emotional scars. Hans Zimmer did a superb job with the soundtrack. We already knew that the Man of Steel soundtrack was awesome so it was great to hear the return of that musical melody but with new additions that were great too.

The music was never as enthralling as when it accompanied an action sequence, most of which were amazing. Outside of the undeniably powerful imagery of seeing the holy trinity of DC battling it out on screen for the first time, the scale and powerlevel of the fights were extraordinary. But outside of the god level beat-em-ups in this movie, the close quarters action was also very well done. We see a much more brutal and unforgiving Batman show criminals exactly why they chose the wrong line of work in really savage brilliance. At the end of the day this movie garners a lot of hate but the fact I had a smile plastered on my face for the majority of the film says something about how entertaining, exciting, and engrossing it was. Batman Vs Superman = 8.5/10 © Sam Burton (aged 19)

Number Of Retirees Expecting To Leave An Inheritance Falls To Lowest Level In Six Years The number of new retirees who think that they can afford to leave a financial legacy to their children has fallen to the lowest level it has been for six years according to the latest research, despite recent changes in rules around inheritance tax.

The findings, from Prudential’s annual report on the financial plans of people planning to retire in the year ahead discovered that 28% of people in 2016 felt that they would leave something behind, compared to 52% in 2011. Among those retirees who do feel that they will be able to leave an inheritance, they expect to leave an average of £191,000, a figure which has stayed relatively the same from last year. The same research also provides a potential reason for the decline in those believing they will be able to leave a legacy, as more than a third of those retiring in 2016 are already helping their families financially, as well as providing support across generations

52

by helping both their children and their grandchildren. Of those retiring in 2016, 35% are providing average handouts of nearly £250 a month, and 13% are giving away over £500 a month. This year’s retirees are financially supporting an average of four family members, with 81% most likely to support children and/or their children’s partners, 15% providing financial support to their own parents, and 5% paying out to support their grandparents. The extent of this money given to family members is most likely used for daily living expenses, with 8% providing money for food and travel costs, and a further 8% making individual contributions towards luxury purchases like holidays, a car or a new television. 7% have contributed towards a house deposit for a family member and 6% have helped to cover university costs. However as a result of providing this financial support, 23% of retirees are planning to take paid employment in their retirement, and 23% plan to sell their family home in order to maintain income. National Adoption Week This year’s National Adoption Week will take place from 17-23 October. The hashtag #SupportAdoption is the theme behind this year’s event. This is in recognition of the many people whose lives or hearts have been touched by adoption. Family Care are a local adoption agency who recognise the impact that adoption can have on people’s lives. If you are considering adopting, Family Care offer regular Adoption Information Evenings which offer a gentle introduction to adoption and the chance to meet members of their team, hear their adopters’ story and ask any questions you might have in a relaxed and informal setting.
