Tinkerbell has been househunting for months…this 3-year old affectionate cat was rescued by Animal Accident Rescue Unit charity and just needs a calm home, as in indoor cat, without children or other pets. Six year old jet-black Ollie has also been waiting for a home long-term; his fosterer says: ‘Ollie is a lovely boy and will make a fantastic pet.’ Like all the charity’s cats, both were FIV/FeLV-tested and Tinkerbell is negative on both. Ollie tested FIV-positive but this simply means his immune system is slightly affected but controlled; he leads a very full life! Both are spayed/neutered, flea and worm treated, micro-chipped and litter-trained, and vaccinated for one year – with their new owners responsible for annual vaccinations. For details, contact the Adoption Officer at admin@aaru.org.uk, who will reply as soon as possible. All adoptions need a successful homecheck. Cats are not rehomed on or near busy roads unless indoor-only. Want to help this lifeline charity? More volunteer drivers, phone operators and rota operators are needed. To help email admin@aaru.org.uk or call 0115-9321555 with your contact details. To raise funds, the charity’s next monthly fair is 2-4pm, Saturday 16 September, Lowdham Village Hall, Main Street, Lowdham NG14 7BD. The charity does not cover healthy strays/ unwanted pets, but helps neglected, injured and vulnerable animals and birds. Anyone finding an animal needing emergency transport to a vet should leave a detailed message on 0115-9321555. To see Ollie, Tinkerbell and all others needing homes, see www.animalaccident.org.uk.

Warning Signs In An Interview by Helen Jones
When you land that interview for your dream job it’s always important to remember that in some respects you should be interviewing them too. Cultural and personality fit within an organisation is just as important as the role itself. If that’s not right you could find yourself dreadfully unhappy within a short period of time. Most candidates are so nervous during the interview process they don’t realise that the potential employer asking certain questions should ring alarm bells. Some of them are illegal and some simply unethical. • Age, gender, ethnicity, religion and other protected characteristics. It’s against the law to ask where a person is from or whether English is their first language. Or even the issue of age and ability to do a job. It’s not relevant and could be deemed discriminatory. • Asking someone if they plan to have children or if they already have a family can make them feel very uncomfortable and suggests that they may be overlooked for the position if they give the ‘wrong’ answer. Again, it is not relevant and could raise concerns over discrimination. • Confidential information from previous positions. It is inappropriate to ask candidates about potentially sensitive information from their last job, especially if the candidate has a non-disclosure agreement in place. • Sick days. If there is a significant gap on a CV it may be appropriate to ask a candidate about it. However, asking a candidate how many sick days they had in a previous job is essentially prying into their health and invading their privacy. • Trade Union Membership. This isn’t information that an interviewer needs to know in order to assess a person’s suitability for a job and totally unprofessional to broach. Remember that the interview experience tells you an enormous amount about the company and about what it’s like to work there – so listen out for the signs that could guide you in the right direction.
All correct answers will be entered into a draw. The winner will be notified by Monday 30 Oct 2017. The performance is 7.30pm.

S Q U AT. KEY POINTS FOR A BETTER BACK SQUAT
Squat: you have all heard this term by now and the fact that injuries and mobility permitted, this exercise should be one of your main go to movements for multiple reasons.
Explaining the position
In this article, we will cover a few reasons why you should squat, and some technical points for improving your movement pattern. Why should I squat? Squatting is one of the key compound movements within exercise. It is a multiple joint, posture related movement, one of the first you perform as a child. If you watch a child from an early age their movement when performing a squat is natural, and pretty much perfect. This is because they have not yet had the factors of life that adults must manage with posture related issues.
1. Ideal position
The back squat is one of the most commonly, poorly performed exercises you will see in gyms.
2. Above parallel (not deep enough)
Why do people get it wrong? There are two main reasons this exercise is performed wrongly; first being the individual’s mobility. This is a key point we are going to address shortly. The other is social media. So many people now follow so called fitness professionals and take misguided information into their own training. You DO NOT need to reinvent the wheel on a basic but structured movement. If you already struggle with movement then forget pulse, paused and all the other BOOTY growing nonsense you are reading. Perfect the form of the basic movement, unweighted if you have to, before moving on to more complex squat methods.
3. Parallel (safe depth for knees)
Mobility How many times have you seen someone squatting but they have not warmed up the movement pattern before they add load on to their back? I am guessing a lot. A good squat needs a little attention before you even lift the bar. Are your hips mobile and warm? Is there any quad and hamstring tightness? Are there any joint issue or strains? Is your foot wear and positioning correct? There are many things to consider when it comes to performing this great exercise, to get the maximum benefit. Please reconsider your preparation.
Practise performing these movements. A great way to improve squat positioning is to: • Face a wall • Squat a few inches away, if your knees touch first, you are quad loading, try sitting back more • If your nose touches the wall first you are hip extending too soon, add a little knee hinge in at the same time • If clearance is good, focus on keeping as upright as you can by getting as close to the wall as you can, AND yes, it is possible to squat with your toes against the wall all the way to your bottom range. Happy Lifting! Kind regards The Strength and Physique Team

TAROSCOPES Air signs- Libra, Aquarius, Gemini (Queen of Swords, Seven of Swords, The Sun) Play your cards close. Not everyone has your best interests at heart and, this month, you’d be wise to identify the sharp-tongued woman who definitely doesn’t, and keep your business off her radar. Prudence is your middle name. Focus on the positive folk in your circle and shine your light on them; keep this meddler well in the shade and her chance to spoil things will soon pass.
Fire signs- Leo, Aries, Sagittarius
(Nine of Cups, Seven of Cups, Justice)
Earth signs- Capricorn, Virgo, Taurus
(The Fool, The World, Eight of Swords) Live and learn. You have come full circle in an area of your life, likely a relationship, and are ready to review what you’ve learnt and achieved. Pause to take the lessons, but don’t dwell on what’s now passed by. Trust you’ve absorbed what you need to and then move on, lighter and brighter. You’re ready for a new adventure.
Water signs- Cancer, Pisces, Scorpio
(Six of Swords, Strength, Queen of Swords)
Dream a dream.
Stronger in every way.
Your powerful imagination has come forth with an idea you believe you could put into action. Do it! It may take some degree of transformation, and some contractual or legal commitments, but it will be worth it. If you don’t manifest this dream now, then it will forever remain a castle in the air.
You’ve finally started to heal and move forwards from something which has long troubled you. This is a true turning point where you’ve proved to yourself how resilient and independent you can be. Nothing can stop you now, so what direction do you want to go in? It’s all up to you now.

own the river in Gunthorpe you will find the stylish celebration restaurant Tom Browns Brasserie. Stuart and Eileen Perkins first opened its doors in May 1986. The restaurant was originally the old victorian school room. In 2001 Stuart and Eileen sold the restaurant to their two sons, Adam & Robin, who rebranded and introduced the famous early bird offer. They have over the years made many refurbishments to the whole restaurant. We were able to choose from either the Al a Carte menu or the early bird menu (1 course £12.50, 2 course £17.50 and 3 courses £22.50). They have recently introduced Brasserie Classics to the menu, such as the classic burger, carbonara pasta and fish
& chips. A good selection of cocktails, wines and beers are also available. The starter of tomato & basil soup and the appetizer of handmade breads were delicious. For the main dish I chose braised lamb shoulder, lamb kofta, spiced aubergine polenta, Zucchini fritter and red cabbage. This meal had the wow factor, beautifully presented, well proportioned and the lamb melts in the mouth.
For the dessert I chose the strawberries, cream & elderflower. You can see that Tom Browns pride themselves in serving great quality food. Toms Browns also run fabulous events throughout the year (see their website). The Winter Ball ‘Electric Cabaret’ with cocktail on arrival, 3 course meal, burlesque, magic, circus acts, live lounge singer and Club Classics with ‘Jon Pleased Wimmin’ will be held on Sat 25th November.

Seasonal Late Summer Cocktails As the evenings start to draw in and the warmth of the summer passes into Autumn, now is the time to make the most of the last of the early evening rays and have a seat in the garden and perhaps enjoy a cocktail or two. The history of how the cocktail got its name isn’t clear. Some theories suggest the drinks were named after the “cocktailed horse” (a horse whose tail had been docked to show that it wasn’t a thoroughbred – i.e was “mixed”). Others suggest the word “cocktail” refers to the leftovers of a cask of ale, call “cocktailings” the cocktailings from various spirits would be mixed together and sold at a cheaper rate than the “pure” spirit.
The first reference to the cocktail as an alcoholic drink seems to have been in 1806 in America where it was defined as “a stimulating liquor composed of spirits of any kind, sugar, water and bitters”. Of course, people have been mixing drinks for centuries, although it wasn’t until the 1700s or so that reference to the cocktail precursor, the “slings” and “toddies”, first made it into the contemporary records. Whatever its origins you can be as imaginative as you like with your cocktails, or indeed non-alcoholic “mocktails”, so why not make the most of the last of the glut of summer fruits and herbs to make these simple seasonal summer drinks.

Autumn Apple and Elderflower
Summer Scented Strawberry Fizz
Minty Mojito Mocktail
English apples are coming into their best at this time of year. Juice your own or a buy a really good quality ready-pressed version. (serves 8)
Use up the last of the British strawberries with this delightfully fragrant drink. (serves 2)
Still got loads of mint running riot in the veg patch or the patio pot? Try this refreshing mocktail to help use it up. (serves 2)
Ingredients 250ml gin 200 ml elderflower cordial 1ltr cloudy apple juice (or make your own if you have a juicer – even better!) In a jam jar, mix the gin with the cordial. When ready to serve, divide the gin mix between 8 glasses and top up with the apple juice, add a handful of crushed ice and garnish with apple slices.
Ingredients 100g hulled and halved strawberries 50g castor sugar 2 tablespoons rosewater (less if you are using an essence) 1x chilled bottle prosecco Dip the rims of the glasses first in lemon juice and then in some castor sugar to form a sugary lip to each glass. Puree the strawberries, sugar and rosewater in a blender. Add a spoon or two to each glass and top with prosecco. Serve with a slice of strawberry on the side.
Ingredients 1 tablespoon sugar Handful of fresh mint Juice of 3 limes Soda water Using some of the lime juice, dip the rims of the glasses in the juice and then into some salt. Crush the mint leaves and sugar together in a pestle & mortar (just enough to combine, not a puree). Place a handful of crushed ice in each glass, divide the lime juice between them, with the mint mix and top up with soda water. Garnish with more fresh mint and a slice of lime.

Tips on how to avoid and deal with wasp and bee stings A significant number of people get stung by wasps and bees. In certain cases, these stings can lead to anaphylactic shock, which can be potentially fatal. Ray from Confirm a Kill Pest Control recommends ways to avoid stings and how to deal with them.
1) Remain Calm
People often wave their arms and move rapidly, this can cause the insect to become increasingly distressed, increasing the chance of a sting. Move away slowly if you encounter wasps or bees and do not swat them.

2) Buy repellent and avoid strong perfumes / deodorants Purchase an insect repellent with at least 50% DEET (diethyltoluamide) to effectively work. Spray this on uncovered skin.
3) Getting Stung
Clean the sting using soap and water. Keep a cold compress on the affected area for 10 minutes and elevate if possible. Antiseptic cream can be applied to provide soothing relief. Avoid home remedies such as bicarbonate of soda and vinegar. They have no effect.
4) Dealing with stings
NHS Choices website is a great site to visit for information on stings, it recommends you: • Call 111 for facial stings • Call 999 for anaphylactic shocks. • Call a professional pest control company to deal with wasp/bee nests.
Do not attempt removal yourself Confirm a Kill Pest Control have the correct equipment to deal with them safely minimising the risks of you being painfully stung or worse having a serious allergic reaction.

from your Neighbourhood Beat Team.... And so we enter the final months of the year. The nights are drawing in and the satisfying crunch of leaves is underfoot. Unfortunately, for some, the darker nights mean more opportunities for committing crimes, particularly burglaries. Many domestic burglaries are carried out by opportunist thieves looking for an easy way in – make sure you leave them out in the cold this year with our tips for securing your home: Shine a light • As the nights get darker earlier, leave a light on inside your home – choose low energy lamps to save yourself a shock when the electricity bill arrives. • If you’re going out, use a timer switch to operate the lights as it gets towards evening – you want to make it look like someone’s home, so think about what you’d normally be doing in the evening and set the timer accordingly. • Make sure your front door is well lit – don’t leave any enticing shadows for potential thieves to hide themselves in. Use dusk to dawn lighting that automatically comes on, so you don’t have to remember to switch them on. • Carefully directed security lighting and visible burglar alarms can act as deterrents, but make sure alarms stop sounding after 20 minutes and lights don’t shine directly into your neighbours’ windows,
otherwise you may have a whole other problem on your hands! Lock down • Of course, September and October don’t always mean chilly temperatures, but whatever the weather, make sure you keep your doors and windows locked at all times. • If you’ve got a flat roof, make sure the windows above it are always locked as well. • Never leave garages or sheds unlocked, especially if they connect to your property. • Fit a five lever mortice lock to all exterior wooden doors (British Standard 3621) and, if you’re having new windows and doors installed, make sure they’re certified to British Standard 7950 for windows and PAS 24 for doors. Although UPVC or composite doors have multi-locking systems, it’s still strongly recommended to have them fitted with an anti-snap lock cylinder of 3* standard as minimum. • The presence of locks themselves can intimidate a potential thief and, if you have deadlocks, use them. They make it more difficult for a thief to make a quick getaway. • Keep your spare keys out of sight and well away from your letterbox. Follow these simple tips and enjoy the autumn and winter festivities securely!

After a summer of amazing events, we are looking forward to a number of big concerts in the early autumn. On 22 September – the 50 year jubilee of the re-opening of St Mary’s Church, Eastwood, after the devastating fire of over 50 years ago - ECMVC will be joined by our friends, Rock ‘n’ Soul Singers from Underwood. On 21 October, ECMVC will once again be joining Derwent Brass at St Peter’s Church, Belper, for a ‘Last Night at the Proms’ concert, which has previously been a sell-out event. Friday 27 October sees ECMVC in concert with Sonara Singers at Underwood Church. All the choir’s latest news can be found at: www.ecmvc.org and facebook.com/ecmvc. You can also call: 07802 758223 to talk about events, booking the choir, or even if you’re interested in coming along to consider joining us. The Rock’n’Soul Singers
Once again, the Rock’n’Soul Singers thoroughly enjoyed supporting Underwood festival on Saturday 8th July by performing, as has become the custom, on the back of a lorry! This year the weather was perfect and festival visitors seemed to enjoy listening to and joining in with our repertoire of rock and pop songs. They also gave generously, with another £75 added to our collection for Alzheimer’s Society. Many thanks to all who supported us. A week later found us at Patchings Art Festival, a first for us as a choir which we all enjoyed thoroughly, especially as the sun shone yet again! Ticket sales, plus the collection on the day from the generous festival audiences, raised a further £144. Many thanks to Patchings Arts Festival for including us in their wonderful event and for their kind donation. We have also had the pleasure of singing in Brinsley Church as part of the “St. James the Great Weekend” celebrations. A good night was had by all, with a further £64 raised for our Alzheimer’s charity. To date we have now raised a grand total of £3000 for our year’s charity Alzheimer’s. Look out for us on www.rocknsoul.org.uk and facebook.com/rocknsoulsingers A number of new members have recently joined us; if you enjoy singing and would like to join us please get in touch on 01773 780192 Our next event will be on September 22nd 7pm at St Mary’s Church Eastwood to help celebrate their Golden Anniversary. We look forward to seeing you at this joint concert with Eastwood Collieries Male Voice Choir.

r: Baby Drive s w ie v e R Bur ton g Playlist in iv r D e t a The Ultim After pulling out of directing the Antman movie at the last minute, we were robbed of experiencing another one of this man’s phenomenal films. Of course the man I am talking about is one Britain’s most talented directors, Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World, and so many other top notch films). However, Wright is back with a high octane heist movie that has a soundtrack every driver will want. The story of Baby Driver follows Baby (Ansel Elgot), an enigmatic but insanely talented driver for Kevin Spacey’s ingenious crime-lord, Doc. Trying to pay off a debt to Doc, Baby must complete these heist jobs to earn his freedom and get out of this not so nice business. After being in an accident as a child, Baby was left with a constant ringing in his ears. To drown out the maddening hum, he employs the use of various ipods to give each day its own special musical vibe. This isn’t a gimmick to make Baby more interesting, it’s an integral part of this movies DNA and a guiding hand whose presence is felt throughout the film. The main benefit of the constant use of awesome licensed music is that the epic car chase scenes are made even more heart pounding and enthralling by having the right accompanying track. But Edgar Wright takes it to another level by making the whole world appear to operate on a different rhythm, both in obvious, and more subtle ways. Characters, events and sick drifts, all line up and are executed in time to the headbanging track that is busting through the speakers at that moment. The attention to detail and amount of planning this must have taken is not only staggering, but insanely impressive and had me smiling with glee both in the big action moments, when a car flip happens just at the drop of a song, to when Kevin Spacey’s pointed finger gestures upward exactly with the beat of the song. This film is moviemaking at its finest. But do we actually care for the characters? Are we terrified for Baby’s safety? Well yes, absolutely yes. But not only Baby, pretty much every single character of Baby Driver has been
well written and acted phenomenally. Every relationship seems real and heartfelt and every character’s motivation makes sense and is completely understandable. The characters are genuinely interesting and incredibly fleshed out instead of the 2D gun-toting thugs they could have been. Overall Baby Driver is a finely tuned spectacle of a movie. Everything, from the loveable and believable characters and their relationships to the eye popping set pieces and even the day to day moments of Baby’s life are all expertly written and choreographed to be energetic and enthralling and to work perfectly with the dominating beat of the time. This gives Baby Driver a unique sense of identity and makes it stand out in this heated summer blockbuster season.

SMILE! Inspire wins Arts Council Support Inspire has received funding through Arts Council England’s Grants for the Arts Libraries Fund to develop an exciting and innovative musical project in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City libraries for children aged 3 – 5 and their families. In collaboration with MishMash Productions the project will create a brand new musical performance based on the popular children’s picture book Augustus and His Smile, written and illustrated by Catherine Rayner and published by Little Tiger Press, www. littletiger.co.uk. Titled Smile, the performance will convey the enchanting story of Augustus’s search for his smile through magical theatrical chamber music. Smile will be a musical adventure to delight young audiences across the county. Inspire who now deliver culture, learning and libraries on behalf of Nottinghamshire County Council, aim to attract new audiences to libraries and to introduce children at an early age to high quality musical experiences. Elaine Dykes, Service Manager – Literacy and Reading, Nottingham Library Service, “This is an exciting partnership which will deliver an innovative musical experience to very young children in library settings. The programme is an excellent addition to our offer - Creating Better Futures – which we believe will bring classical music to new audiences”. Performances will tour libraries in Nottinghamshire and Nottingham City in October. Further details about the performance will be announced soon, on the Inspire website and via social media.

ottingham Off Roading Events are based in the heart of Nottingham’s Sherwood Forest, spanning 60 acres. They offer a wide range of outdoor and indoor activities using several centres within the area. Whether you are wanting an activity for the kids, a family, corporate /team event or a special party package they have so much to offer including quad biking, archery, rifle shooting, crossbow, It’s a Knockout and much more. Upon arrival we were met by Sarah and Shaun, who explained that we would be trying out the 4x4 driving experience. Age restrictions to this activity do apply, driving the Landrover is allowed over 15 years of age (no driving licence is required) – children can be passengers. We had Shaun as a guide in the passenger seat, helping us with advice along the way through woodland trails, ditches, hills and
loads of mud and water!!! The whole experience was brilliant fun and the four of us cannot wait to go back. They have a cafe on site for refreshments. Take a look at their website www. nottinghamoffroadevents.co.uk For a full list of activities and events.

Time to End the Stigma…
A
wareness of mental health issues is improving all the time and yet it is still a common reaction for people to feel ashamed at their mental health issues, which may lead to sufferers choosing not to seek help for those issues. Recent years have seen mental health awareness improve by leaps and bounds, with an annual Mental Health Awareness week in May as well as regular campaigns on social media sites such as Facebook, urging us to be aware of mental health issues and to end the stigma which surrounds them. Terms such as depression, anxiety, Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Obsessive Compulsive Disorders (OCD) are now widely known and people recognise that these illnesses exist and need to be treated to allow the sufferer to lead a healthy and meaningful life. And yet, despite this increase in awareness, it still seems that there are many people out there, struggling under the weight of these illnesses, who are afraid to seek help for them. Many of these people believe it is a moral failing of theirs rather than illness, that it merely denotes them as weak rather than unwell. And due to the feelings of shame which surround mental illness, many people who suffer under the burden of these debilitating and often life-limiting illnesses choose not to seek help – in a way that they wouldn’t with a physical illness. People don’t generally shrug off painful or worrying physical symptoms as a sign that they are weak nor
do people tend to blame themselves for catching an illness such as flu. In those situations, people will accept the help that they are offered and see no failing on their part for feeling the way that they do. Scrolling through my Facebook feed has, on recent occasions, been a very sad and upsetting activity. On a number of occasions, I have read distressing updates about people who have obviously been suffering with mental health issues and have chosen to end their lives as a way to put an end to the real pain that they are in. And so often, after these sad events, I have seen an outpouring of love and support for the deceased, a real sense that people would only have been to glad to help and to offer support if only they had known. So what can we do to end this stigma that surrounds mental health? To make sure that people feel no more shame about illnesses that concern their mental wellbeing as they would about physical ailments? As well as supporting the many mental health awareness campaigns that happen throughout the year, we could also make sure that we have that conversation with our loved ones, with our family and friends and colleagues and make sure that they know that there is no shame in suffering from a mental illness. According to the World Health Organisation, around one in four of us will be affected by mental illness at some point in our lives. It would benefit us all if we ended the stigma which surrounds it.

Including Digital Legacies in Your Will The amount of data we store online is ever-increasing, from using online banking and streaming services to emails and online accounts. You might not have given much consideration to what will happen to all this electronically stored data after you die, but it could actually have a big effect on your estate. For example without any physical copies of bills or bank statements, and without login details for your online accounts it would be difficult for family members or trustees to manage your finances once you are gone. Therefore by making plans for your online accounts it will be easier in the long term for those you leave behind.
Recently legal academics and solicitors have been calling for a provision for online data to be included in wills after a court in Germany ruled that the parents of a teenage girl who had died did not have the right to access her Facebook account. The parents had sought access to the account to establish whether their daughter was being bullied and had committed suicide. In the UK online assets lie with the service provider, but it is still unclear who is allowed access to them upon a person’s death. Families can request for accounts to be deleted or to have partial access
64
to them, but with most websites having different policies, even a change of law in one jurisdiction would not necessarily help families to get access to the accounts of a deceased family member. One suggested solution is to store passwords for digital accounts in a letter alongside the will; however relatives who obtain the passwords but do not attain appropriate authority could be committing a criminal offence under section 1 of the Computer Misuse Act 1990. In order to prevent this content being lost to families forever a reform has been advised for when testators intend for this access to be given, or encouraging service providers to play a more prominent role in the access of digital legacies by giving users the opportunity to state whether they want account details to be made available to family members after their death. In 2014 America implemented the Fiduciary Access to Digital Assets act, establishing a process for allowing an executor, trustee or Power of Attorney to access and manage someone’s online accounts after their death, whilst also allowing designated accounts to be marked as “off limits”. Time will tell whether similar legislation will make its way over to the UK, but as a start it is worth at least maintaining a list of websites that you have signed up to which can be passed to your solicitor or a family member, making it easier for them to identify which sites have data about you. If you need advice about passing on your digital legacy to your relatives in the event of your death contact our Wills and Probate team on 0800 088 6263 or email enquiries@rotherasharp. co.uk
