THIRD SLOPE TECTONICS Evaluering av drenering som sikoreduserende tiltak ved Åknes CONFERENCE

THIRD SLOPE TECTONIC CONFERENCE WELCOME TO TRONDHEIM, NORWAY

ABSTRACTS AND REGISTRATION

The Third Slope Tectonics Conference is arranged at the Geological Survey of Norway (NGU) 8-12 September, 2014. Scientific presentations will be held the first two days (8-9 Sept.) and followed by a three-day excursion (10-12 Sept.).

Abstract Submission and Registration is on: www.ngu.no/ slopetectonics where you can download the abstract template. The abstract’s title must be submitted online along with the completed registration form. To be included in the final program, registration fees must be paid. You will be invoiced after your abstract is accepted.

The conference is focused on mass-wasting induced structures and fabrics from local to regional scale, their description, mapping, geotechnical analyses and evolution modelling. The Third Slope Tectonics Conference follows the successful first and second conferences held in Lausanne (2008) and Vienna (2011), which both resulted in special publications (GSL books and Tectonophysics). This conference also aims to produce a special publication.

ABOUT THE EXCURSION

Excursion Day 1

With the help of our sponsors, we are happy to offer a low priced excursion led by Thierry Oppikofer, Reginald Hermanns and others. A bus starting from Trondheim will bring you to the glacially oversteepened Sunndal and Romsdal Valleys. Here you will observe sites where catastrophic collapses of large rock masses have taken place in historic time causing displacement waves in the fjords. You will visit unstable rock slopes that are periodically or continuously monitored. We will also visit sites to discuss rock slope failures onto a decaying glacier, and sites where rock slope failures run into a fjord and deposits are now exposed due to isostatic rebound. Other sites will allow discussion on the influence of post-Caledonian faulting on rock slope stability today.

Depart Trondheim towards Sunndal Valley: field trip to the current unstable rock slope and a past rock avalanche Ivasnasen (incl. ca. 1h walk to the top of the rockslide & 1h back to the bus); road stop at the complex Gikling rockslide; road stop at Oppdølstranda (rockfall prone road section); ca. 1h walk through rock avalanche deposits in Innerdal Valley towards the overnight accommodation at Innerdalshytta.

Leave Innerdalshytta; visit of the rock avalanche deposits in Innerdal Valley (incl. Younge Dryas supra-glacial rock avalanche deposits, ca. 1h walk back to the bus); road stop for the 1756 Tjellefonna rock avalanche and displacement wave (site of the largest historic rock Trondheim avalanche in Norway); field visit of the Trondheim airport Middagstinden DSGSD controlled by a post-Caledonian fault; road stops at the rock avalanche deposits in Innfjorddal Valley (rock avalanching into fjord, exposed due to isostatic rebound); overnight accommodation at Grand Hotel Åndalsnes.
