History Location Designer Architecure collection

1. History In June 1965, Pereira’s firm was asked to design the main library for the UCSD campus. On July 1, 1968, ground was broken for the new library. The building was completed in 1970. Partial occupancy was reached by June of that year when the books were moved in. The first books were moved into the building on June 29, 1970. By September 1970, the library was at full occupancy

1. History During 1992, the building was updated and the tower was restored close to Pereira’s original design. This floor plan created more reading room for students. The 1992 renovations included installing a new air conditioning system, updating the two existing elevators and adding a third. The stacks also underwent seismic retrofitting. On December 1, 1995 The University Library Building was renamed Geisel Library in honor of Audrey and Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) for the generous contributions they have made to the library and their devotion to improving literacy

2 and 3. Location & Designer • Loaction: The Geisel Library is located in the center of the UCSD campus, directly north of the Price Center • Designer Executive Architect: William L. Pereira Associates and Project Architect: Robert A. Throburn

4. Architecure • The alien form of the Geisel Library at the University of California, San Diego seems befitting of a backdrop from a science fiction movie. • With its strong concrete piers and hovering glassy enclosures, the library beautifully occupies an ambiguous state between massiveness and levitation.

4. Architecure The resulting building is an eight-story structure with two submerged floors and six floors of varying sizes above ground level. The widest of the above ground levels occurs at the sixth floor, which is over two hundred feet wide. A solid core containing the stairs, elevators, and mechanical shafts runs throughout the building.

4. Architecure At each aboveground level, giant sheets of plate glass coated in anodized aluminum provide light to the reading spaces and stacks within. The treatment of the windows allows them to reflect and sometimes blend in perfectly with the sky behind it. The color of the glass oscillates between dull grays, vibrant blues, and fiery yellows depending on the weather and time of day, creating a dynamic and ever-changing appearance.

5. Collection The Geisel Library building contains materials and services related to: Arts, Area Studies, Engineering, Humanities, Marine Sciences, Physical Sciences, and Social Sciences. By providing access to more than 7 million digital and print volumes, journals, microforms and multimedia materials, the UC San Diego Library directly supports the research and instructional needs of the university and serves as a portal to culture and discovery. More than 50,000 images, documents, video and audio recordings

4/ Cambridge University Library

• Cambridge University Library is the main research library of the University of Cambridge in England. It is also biggest of 114 libraries within the University. The Library is a major scholarly resource, not only for the University of Cambridge’s academic community, but also for researchers nationally and internationally. Organisationally, Cambridge University Library comprises the main University Library and its affiliated libraries.

• The library is open to all members of the University of Cambridge. As is traditional amongst British university libraries, research postgraduates and academics from other UK universities are allowed reference-only access to the library's collection, and members of the public may apply for access to use the Library for reference if their research requires access to materials held there.

History • As early as the fourteenth century, Cambridge University owned a collection of manuscripts and some printed books. These would have been kept in chests along with other valuables, rather than in a library building as would be recognised today. • The earliest catalogue is dated ca. 1424, at which time there were 122 volumes in the library. The second earliest surviving catalogue was drawn up in 1473, and denotes 330 volumes. From the 16th century onwards it received generous donations or bequests of books and growth was considerably increased once the privilege of legal deposit had been granted.

Access • The library is open to all members of the University of Cambridge. As is traditional amongst British university libraries, research postgraduates and academics from other UK universities are allowed reference-only access to the library's collection, and members of the public may apply for access to use the Library for reference if their research requires access to materials held there. • The library is unique amongst the UK's legal deposit libraries in keeping a large proportion of its books on open access and in allowing some categories of reader (for example Cambridge academics, postgraduates and undergraduates) to borrow from its collection. It has a well-used "Tea Room" in which full meals, snacks and beverages are available. The library regularly puts on exhibitions, usually free to the public, and featuring items from its collections.

COLLECTIONS • The main University Library is home to over 8 million books, journals and other items. It has one of the largest collections on open shelves in Europe. With over two million volumes housed on open shelves, you can benefit from immediate access and unparalleled opportunities for browsing. Uniquely for a legal deposit library, much of our collection may be borrowed by University members. • The Library also has rich Special Collections, and specialist language collections. We showcase many items from our collections in regular exhibitions, many of which are open to the public. •

SPECIAL COLLECTION • Cambridge University Library's Special Collections include the oldest and most valuable materials in the Library, in manuscript, printed and artefact form, as well as modern maps, music and material in the Asian & Near and Middle Eastern collections. The oldest items in the collection are Chinese oracle bones dating from 1400 to 1200 BC. • The Library is committed to using its Special Collections to support research and teaching, and to developing digital services to make the collections accessible to the widest possible audience in new and innovative ways. At the same time, it recognises the enduring importance of the physical collections, and the need to preserve this unique cultural heritage for future generations.
