Bell Island, a Norwalk niche and a small slice of Rowayton, is a remarkable gem, and only 60 miles outside New York City. Its appeal endures as a result of efforts by its preservation society that is over 100 years old. The land has had multiple owners, but the earliest one of record, Captain Harmon Bell, bought it in 1852, for whom the island is named. Later, he lost the land to British creditors. Ultimately, lots were partitioned and developed for summer residents from New York and Connecticut who looked for respite from the daily grind by the sea. As years progressed, this summer playground has become a lifestyle as residents settle in for all four season.
