DIGITAL DESIGN + FABRICATION SM1, 2016 M1 JOURNAL - STICKS Ng Xuan Ly 751730 Tim- Tutorial #3

Measured Drawings The stick object consists of 18 sticks, of which is divided into two layers. Each layer of 9 sticks overlapped one another at an angle. The drawings below show objects unfolding into three different stages. The expansion of the sticks in all three stages are measured accurately with a measuring tape as a preliminary tool. Some photographs are taken as reference images to identify different stages of movement of the sticks.
Elevation #1 1:5
Elevation #2 1:5
Elevation #3 1:5
Based on the elevation, the height of the sticks decreases as the diameter enlarges. Due to the overlapping motion of the sticks, it formed diamond-like patterns which evidently show the movement of the sticks in detail. The diamond-like patterns change their shapes when pressure is being exerted onto the sticks.

As pressure is being exerted onto the sticks, it causes the diameter of the inner and the outer circles to change - increase or decrease. The sticks move at a more slanted angle as it descends downwards.

Analysis
The three nails being pinned on each outer stick of the object play an important role in the movement of contraction and expansion of the sticks. The nails pinned on the sticks are of different distances. This will cause the diameter of the sticks to change, A larger distance will cause the nails to turn anticlockwise, allowing the sticks to spread out its ends to form a larger diameter.
The overlapping of sticks help to build a form for the sticks to stand on itself. The position of sticks on an angle cause the formation of circles as the diameter of the object, This is an interesting form considering straight sticks can produce a curvaceous structure,

When more pressure is being exerted to the sticks, the diamond shapes formed due to the arrangement of the sticks change. The side vertexes (red) are being pulled away causing the diamond patterns to expand whereas the two vertexes that determines the height shrink. The movement of the shapes cause me to emphasise on the sticks being able to articulate to suit another form.
Expansion of joints
The change of shapes allow me to explore on the articulation of joints. The overlapping of an intersection allows the movement of sticks, thus change the shapes of an object. This is one of many interesting aspects to be further analysed and developed.

Render in Details
Render Views of the sticks are shown. The overlapping of the sticks are evidently shown during the rendering process to show the changes of movement in the stick. The process of modelling the sticks include: -
1. Form a solid cylinder. 2. Draw a line for centrepoint for “Arraypolar. 3. Change the angle. 4. Use Arraypolar command. 5. Using the starting point, mirror the solid to form the sticks of the other direction. 6. Change the angle and the diameter of the sticks.

Sketch Model
I emphasized on the articulation of the object and created a volume that allows movement. Based on the overlapping system seen in the stick object, I decided to imply the same notion onto my reconfigured object. My reconfigured object is made out of popsicle sticks to further explore on the repititive system applied onto the stick object. The popsicle sticks are held by a foundation which in this case appears to be a long stick. The following popsicle sticks are joined by another popsicle stick on their intersection with one another. Using the joint system, the form of the object is adjustable, giving it the freedom to contract and expand certain areas in the object. Similarly, this form of structure is quite suitable and moving its way towards my concept of sleeping pods due to its form being adjustable towards one’s liking.

I wanted to emphasize on the movement of joints of my reconfigured object, causing the ability to open up as well as closing in. My reconfigured object started off as merely just forms of parallel joint lines. As it closes in by overlapping the intersection together, it forms a 3-dimensional volume. Therefore, the finishing model not only have the ability to open itself up to form a platform of lines but it is also able to adjust its surrounding areas.

Sketch Design #1 Isolate/ Extend of protection/Rabbit’s hole
What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
Overlapping wood structures are applies to form a semi-sphere sleeping pod. The structures sticking the semi-sphere (on the bottom) have an application which enable the structures to slide outwards for more privacy. When being slide upwards, it forms another layer of shelter.
How does this respond to your personal space? The sleeping pod is shaped like a rabbit hole which provide a sense of safety for people who crawl into them. The structures that shoot upwards and outwards provide the user a larger personal space and more privacy who wish to have their alone and quiet time.

Sketch Design #2 Multi-Purpose/ Convertible/ Flexible
What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
Using the overlapping and the joining system, it allows the user to adjust its position for a comfortable rest or nap. The arrows on the left indicate that the easy adjustment of the sleeping pod being able to lower it to prevent light from going in when a user is sleeping.
The whole chair is undergoing a rotation which inevitably converts into a sleeping pod. The structure (in red) which is also used as an armrest act as a shield to respond to people’s privacy.
How does this respond to your personal space? The sleeping pod blends into the environment of being an ordinary chair which can be converted into a sleeping pod. The articulating joints overhead allow the structures to go lower when the user prefers more privacy and less light to penetrate through. The shield protect users from getting eye contact with other people and can safely take a nap without feeling insecure.

Sketch Design #3 Flexible/ Comfort/ Wearable
What is your idea? [Maximum 5 key words]
The gear acts like a mould that follows the shape and size of your head o provide maximum comfort.
How does this respond to your personal space? The sleeping pod which is wearable covers the eyes area to provide complete darkness when taking a nap. As the neck is one of the most important parts of the body to be supported when sleeping, the gear behind the user’s back act as a mould and has a flexible structure that enable the users to adjust his position when sleeping. The gear curves upwards when the user’s head is being moulded onto the structure. This will provide the blockage of hearing to enable better sleep.
