3.0 Projects/Tasks Summary

3.1 Proposed SOP Covid-19 Compliant Workers Dormitory for 5000 Persons Stage

: Schematic design

Location

: Selangor

Building Type : Residential

The main idea of this project was to propose and design new dormitory which meet the SOP Covid-19 guidelines for compliant migrant workers in our country. The design is based on Pilot design model: 6m² per person, 10 beds per room with one-meter social distancing, one toilet and shower for 10 persons. In rapid built dorm concept, using local building materials which is simple and local proven IBS precast. The first task that I had been given was to come out the first draft of plan design layout according to client’s requirements and SOP Covid-19 guideline. Before that, I had a small discussion with my supervisor, Mr Cheong and engineer Mr Yong on the very first idea of the whole plan layout design. Besides, I was asked to do some researches on the current workers’ dormitory condition and SOP guideline in Malaysia. I was assigned to produce the Autocad plan drawings after we agreed with the first idea.

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

During this schematic design stage, I had such opportunity to be involved in the discussion with the professionals. I printed the first plan layout that I had done for their comments and we did some amendments on the layout after discussion. I have learnt a lot from this discussion such as the design thinking process, the budget control, IBS system construction and building space measurements. The most important thing that I have learnt from this process was the way for an architect to start designing a building in real life. There is different from what students usually design during their class because there are a lot of rules and restrictions need to be coped with.

Figure 3.1.4: Design amendments and discussion

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

After all the discussion and amendments, I produced the final drawings using Autocad. Then, I started to build 3D Sketchup model for the presentation.

After finished the 3D model built up, I started to do rendering and prepare for a good and eye-catching presentation. I was guided by my supervisor, Mr Cheong while doing this presentation. I was able to use my design skills and software skills such as Autocad, Sketchup, Photoshop and Powerpoint to finish this whole presentation. Apart from that, I have improved my presentation skills by learning some different rendering style in this presentation. All of these drawings and presentation were finished within one week under the guidance of my supervisor. It was really quite challenging for me to finish this whole project presentation before the deadline and even I felt a little bit stressful while doing this proposal, I have equipped myself with various of knowledges and skills. I was glad that I had such opportunity in doing this proposal and finished it in the time given.

3.2 KFC Drive Thru Mersing Stage

: Schematic Design

Location

: Mersing, Johor.

Building Type : Restaurant

Figure 3.2.1: Client-Consultant Meeting

On Tuesday, 23th June 2020, I was given chance to attend Client-consultant meeting of KFC Drive Thru Mersing project. This was my first time to attend the real meeting in architectural industry. KFC Drive Through Mersing was a renovation project which transforming some part of the existing government’s building, Mersing Harbour Centre into KFC drive thru purpose. There were so much discussion needed between client, government and consultants during this design process. I have such opportunity to observe on how was the process of discussion between consultants and client and the way they were trying to solve the problems. Through this meeting, I have learnt that the cooperation and communication between each other was important in the process of designing a building. Besides, I have more understand on the procedure required for a building plan to be approved. For example, what documents required for different authorities’ submissions, which aspects, how to meet the requirements of government agencies and so on.

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

After the meeting, I was assigned to do some building plan amendments according to what they had discussed during the meeting. However, there were some issues discovered on the on-site fire access road. Hence, on 30th June 2020, I had a visit to the Fire and Rescue Department of Johor to have enquiry on the building plans of KFC Drive Thru Mersing.

Figure 3.2.2: Fire and Rescue Department, Johor

Figure 3.2.3: Building plans enquiry

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

After that, I had a visit to One Stop Centre, Majlis Daerah Mersing to pre-consult our building plans submission on 14 July 2020. I have learnt the process of how to pre-consult the building plans during the visit in order to make sure the building plans and documents submission are all according to the requirements of the relevant Majlis.

Figures 3.2.4: Pre-consult our building plans in OSC Majlis Daerah Mersing

Figure 3.2.5: Pre-consult Building plans

After pre-consult the drawings, we required to have a site visit due to some existing issues such as the location of new proposed refuse chamber, width of drive-thru road, car parking area and location of fire hydrant on site.

All the drawings and rendered 3D model were presented by Ar. Cheong during OSC Meeting. After the meeting, I realized that in order for a proposal to be approved, it takes professionals from different aspects to reach a consensus including architect, landscape designer, mechanical and electrical engineers, fire department and so on. Besides, architect or client must able to answer and do explanation if relevant government asking questions on the design during the meeting.

Figures 3.2.18: OSC Meeting

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

Second site visit After receiving some design comments from the government during the OSC Meeting, I followed Mr Cheong, client and other consultants to have a site visit to settle some issues on our building design proposal. The most important comment we have to settle was the location of the new proposed refuse chamber. Therefore, we had a discussion on site and did measurements of the existing refuse chamber and the pathway to make sure there is enough width for a refuse bin.

Figures 3.4.1: Site visit

On 9th July, I had a site visit with Mr Cheong to a cemetery which located in Gelang Patah, Johor. The client would like to turn the plain cemetery into a modern memorial park in order to make this place more like a beautiful garden while able to give people a feeling of serenity. During the site visit, I had a chance to have exposure to a real site context while training my design and site planning skills. Then, I was leaded by Mr Cheong to come up with our first design concept. First, we had a discussion on the overall concept idea and I was given task to do some precedent studies on the modern contemporary garden design in developing the idea. Through this assignment, I able to develop my idea by doing some manual sketches of the site layout and learnt how to get inspirations from others through the research studies.

Figure 3.4.2: Some sketches of the first design concept on site

After a few days, we had a meeting with the landscape contractors. I was assigned to do the powerpoint presentation of our first concept for the discussion purpose. During the meeting, we discussed on the budget and estimated the cost for this whole project according to our first design concept. Mr Chin, a landscape contractor who has broad experience on the landscape design provided his suggestions on the selection of materials, colour and types of plants during the discussion. I have learnt that as an architect should always keep his own idea while accepting other professionals’ suggestions at the same time to produce a good design. After the meeting, the presentation slides and costing information were sent to the client for the feedback.

Mr Cheong was unable to attend this discussion so he assigned me to discuss this design proposal with the client. During the discussion, the client requested to have more place for car parking so that can accommodate more people on site. I was able to give him a few suggestion and tried to propose a new design layout for him using my current design knowledges. At the end, both of us reached a consensus. I felt fortunate and glad to have such opportunity to communicate with the client so that I could improve my problem solving and design communication skills.

3.6 Single Story Bungalow House Stage

: Schematic Design

Location

: Ledang Height, Johor

Type

: Residential

The project was the first housing project that I was given chance to design during my internship. The owner would like to rent out half of this bungalow for the resort purposes while keeping another half spaces of the house for him and his family. Firstly, I estimated the spaces’ size according to client’s requirements which including living room, dining area, two big bedrooms with on suits, guest room, maid room, storeroom, dried and wet kitchen. Maximum 1500 square feet was given for the total area. Under the guidance of my supervisor Mr Cheong, I started to design and explore on the spaces of the bungalow house. I was able to come out with a few of plan layout design options by using Autocad.

Figure 3.6.1: Plan layout design options

After getting some advices and comments from Mr Cheong, I learnt some shortcomings of my design and then tried to improve it. During this exercise, I was able to practice my design skills by considering the human circulation, ventilation and learnt to solve the problems such as the arrangement of the spaces and how to fit all spaces into the limited built-up area given.

Figure 3.6.2: Proceed exploration and improvement of the plan layout

AR614 ARCHITECTURE INTERNSHIP REPORT NG YING YING 1001643773

After few amendments, I produced the first draft design of the plan layout and 3D Sketchup model for the client’s review and comment. At the same time, I was required to explore on the form of the building especially the roof design. The client requested to reduce the size of car porch area and reduce one bedroom for the future resort area, so that I was required to do some adjustments the layout.

3.7 Site Visit: Shop lot Houses Stage

: Construction

Location

: Taman Kempas Indah, Johor

Type

: Shop lot Houses

On 8th September, I had a site visit to the Shop Lot Houses which is under the construction stage in Taman Kempas Indah. At the same time, I was fortunately to attend the first site meeting in my architectural career. I learnt that site meeting is important for architect to make sure everything is running smoothly and understand the current progress on site. For instance, during the construction in this project, there was an issue on the height of window of bathroom. Hence, architect and all the team members need to come up with the solutions during the meeting. There will be some problems need to be faced during the construction stage, so the discussion between each party is vital to solve all the problems founded under this phase.

4.0 Conclusion

In summary, my internship training in CNC Architect has provided me with a bright insight into the real world of the architectural working industry. This short duration of practical training experience was an eye-opening experience as I was given opportunities to have exposure to the architectural industry. I have learnt and understand the responsibility and importance of an architect as it is crucial to possess the experience, skills, knowledges and patience in order to face various challenges and obstacles in every project. In my opinion, practical training is essential for students before getting into the real working industry as it allows students to acquire practical knowledge and learn how to utilize their skills in real industry. Last but not least, I would like to thank Ar. Cheong Nai Cheong for his generosity in sharing his personal architectural knowledge to me and gave me opportunities to be part of the team of CNC Architect. I was glad to be one of the member of this firm during these threemonths practical training.
