Seminars Promote Success of Entrepreneurs Lilian de la Torre-Jimenez
A group of excited entrepreneurs celebrated the successful completion of a five-week workshop as part of the NHBWA “How to Develop a Successful Business” series taught in Spanish. The series prepared the business owners from Orange County in the following areas: finances, marketing, business development plans, strategies to increase sales, time management and more.“We hope that the classes offered a solid foundation for starting a successful business. We had participants from various industries which made the classes very engaging for everyone,” said Elisabeth Pechs, OCSBDC business consultant and the instructor of the business series. NHBWA offered the no-cost five-week classes during the months of August and September. The funding for the entire series was made possible by a partnership with United Way of Orange County, Union Bank, and the Orange County Small Business Development Center (OCSBDC). “We are grateful to our wonderful partners. Together, we are able to maximize our efforts and provide business insight to community members that want to begin or build their business,” said Yobany Banks-McKay, NHBWA President. Member Corner Staying Connected To Her Heritage By Teresa Mercado-Cota Patty Homo is the President of VALPO Medios, Inc., a media planning and buying firm. Patty opened her own small business after 14 years at one of the top Hispanic advertising agencies in the country, working on various national and local accounts such as L'Oreal, California Lottery, General Motors, Microsoft XBOX, Coors Brewing Co. and the The Home Depot, among others. Since 2007, VALPO Medios, Inc. clients have included Kool Smiles, The 2010 US Census and The US Army.
Patty grew up in Chile and honors the city where she grew up with the name of her company. “VALPO is short for Valparaíso which is were most of my immediate family lives. It is a way for me to stay connected and celebrate my heritage,” Patty said. Scholarship Highlight
A Young Woman With Her Priorities in Order By Francisco De Anda 2010 Scholarship recipient, Lorena Lopez is currently attending California State University, Fullerton, where she is pursuing her undergraduate studies in Human Services. Ultimately, she plans to obtain her Masters Degree in Education as she intends to become a high school counselor to better serve and encourage high school students to continue their education. Although Miss Lopez is very busy with school, she always finds the time to partake in community service work and extracurricular activities. For instance, she is noted for being involved with the Hispanic Scholarship Fund, which is essentially an organization that provides resources to college students who are in need. Miss Lopez assists in these efforts by conducting workshops at local high schools to better inform students about financial resources and educational outreach. She is also involved with HERMANAS UNIDAS, which serves as a support group specifically for Latinas who are pursuing a college education. All in all, Miss Lopez has a very important message to the community she serves, “No one can take away your education. Although it’s difficult at times, I continue to move forward and remind myself that everything I’m doing is for my own benefit. At the end, it will all be worth it!” NHBWA sincerely thanks Miss Lopez for her words of wisdom as we hope it will convey a very important message and impression to other Latinas throughout the community.
