his season, we invite you to West Reading for a taste of jazz and take note of the diverse cuisines all within the borough! As one of the largest, most comprehensive festivals in the country, Boscov’s Berks Jazz Fest, kicks off in its 24th season this spring, you’ll find echoes of live jazz melodies in great venues throughout the greater Penn Corridor and West Reading. With over 120 contemporary jazz, blues, R&B and world music artists performing, this event certainly gives steam to this old railroad town. While in town, catch the 2012 Kelly Cup winners, the Reading Royals hockey team, on the ice at the downtown Santander Arena, or see a world-class exhibit at the Reading Public Museum. In this issue, we’ll dish out details about pairing jazz festivities and savory dishes at the many restaurants right here in West Reading. We’ll give you the inside scoop on the sophisticated flavors and variety of cuisines plus a tour of West Reading’s Jazz Fest venues.

IN THE KNOW & ON THE GO //// new & improved
New & Improved on the Avenues New places are a chance for new, small business and restaurant owners to showcase their creativity and innovation in service to the area. We’ve selected a few that you may wish to explore.
Nonno Alby’s
Handcrafted Wood Oven Pizza 701 Penn Avenue, West Reading 610.376.1011 *Gluten-free pizza
The West Reading Avenues is proud to welcome its newest restaurant, Nonno Alby’s Wood Oven Pizza, at 701 Penn Avenue, that, by all accounts, is a second generation tribute to a restaurant family, Albino (Alby) and Lina Grande, founders and owners of GNA Ristorante and Pizzeria, located in the 400 block of Penn Avenue.
Nonno Alby’s was opened by Alby and Lina’s three children, Benjamin, Massimo and Tina Grande-Cirandine, as a tribute to their father, Alby. The new restaurant has even opened in the same location where the patriarchs established their original GNA Ristorante. The concept for this new, specialized restaurant grew out of their childhood memories visiting their grandparents in Calabria, Italy. They had always enjoyed the gourmet, brick oven pizzas made with the freshest ingredients. Their new venture will follow this simple Italian philosophy. Beautiful four-cheese pizzas. Satisfying gourmet burgers. Fresh ingredients in jumbo sizes baked on dough that cooks into a thin crust by the heat of the flames in a brick oven. Their brick
oven was designed in Italy, to be fashioned after the brick ovens of Calabria, assembled in California, transported once again to West Reading, and reassembled in Nonno Alby’s. Visit Nonno Alby’s to enjoy pizza, sandwiches and specialty Italian favorites for lunch and dinner. Their finely-tuned menu includes something for the entire family. Bring your friends together for a great meal and BYOB, or take a seat at the hightop bar and see what comes out of the oven!
It’s a Gift— The Woman’s Exchange of Reading If you’re looking for a unique hostess gift, home décor item or select artisanal fashions, you may wish to visit It’s a Gift. Conveniently located in the 700 block of Penn Avenue, this non-profit gift shop recently underwent a transformation that included name update, interior make-over and inventory. The shop carries unique American-handmade goods to support artisans across the United States, and support local charities.

f traveling to West Reading by car, you’ll need to know the best places to park. There’s on-street parking and surface lot parking within the borough and just beyond the borders. Street parking on the main thoroughfare, Penn Avenue, and the perpendicular avenues is enforced with a two-hour parking limit. It’s free, term-limit parking designed to provide easy store and restaurant access to short-term visitors. Although street parking on Penn Avenue fills up quickly, the streets that run parallel (i.e. Franklin St. and Spruce St.) are usually a safe bet to find a spot. And, remember, it doesn’t matter how far away you park because everything is accessible with a short walk. Surface lots are at 5th & Penn Avenues, in the heart of the borough, and 8th & Penn Avenues, which is conveniently located next to the world-famous VF Outlet Center. Perhaps you’ll start your day shopping there. Finally, many stores and service providers have off-street parking for patrons, conveniently located behind or adjacent to their locations.
Take I-76 West to the PA Turnpike (toll road 76W). Take 76 West to the Morgantown exit 298. Proceed through the tollbooth to I-176. Continue for approximately 10 miles and take the 422 West exit. Take 422 West to the Penn Street, Reading, or Penn Avenue, West Reading exit.
From Baltimore Take I-95 to Baltimore Beltway (I-695W), then to I-83 North to York, PA. From there take Route 30 East, to Lancaster, then 222 North to Reading. Merge on to 422 East towards Pottstown. Take the Penn Street, Reading, or Penn Avenue, West Reading exit.

hat’s the best way to tackle local problems? Complain? Criticize? Blame others? For better or worse, things are going to change. In an increasingly hectic world that competes for everyone’s free time, civic involvement is declining across the nation but not in West Reading where volunteers work to be part of the solution. If you’re looking to be entertained this Earth Day then West Reading’s Earth Day Clean Up and Beautification event is not for you. “We want people who are willing to get their hands dirty and really do something,” says Dean L. Rohrbach, West Reading Elm Street program manager. Volunteers, friends, neighbors, schools, churches and civic organizations will join together on Saturday, April 19, 2014, for the annual Earth Day Clean Up and Beautification event. Volunteers will rendezvous at South 2ⁿd Avenue and Chestnut Street in West Reading in the vicinity of the West 16
Avenues Spring 2014
Reading Community Garden. The event is scheduled from 8:30 am –1 pm. Free lunch and refreshments provided courtesy of Third & Spruce Cafe. All gloves, tools, trash bags, etc. will be provided. Volunteers will be assigned to one of several teams to accomplish tasks in the areas of: • Clean flotsam and jetsam along the west shore of the Schuylkill River. • Apply fresh compost and soil to garden beds in the West Reading Community Garden. • Clean trash & litter along the West Shore By-Pass. • Plant flowers & shrubs in street containers at various locations. West Reading Elm Street was created in 2005 to address issues of blight and crime in borderline residential neighborhoods that surround Penn Avenue business district. Elm Street is a partnership of residents, business leaders and government officials dedicated to revitalizing West Reading’s older neighborhoods through programs that create homeowners, improve the housing stock, beautify the streetscape, improve safety, and involve residents to benefit the community.

WEST READING FARMERS’ MARKET ////
Save the Date Sunday, May 18, 2014
West Reading Farmers’ Market kicks off the 2014 season!
By Andréa D. Much
O
ne by one, OPEN signs flip to reveal their greeting to the sidewalks along Penn Avenue. The traffic lights change steadily, but the roads of West Reading rest, sleeping in, so to speak, until the small town is stirred awake by its Sunday visitors. The Sunday Farmers’ Market is alive and well in West Reading. At the heart of West Reading’s “main street,” the 500 block of Penn Avenue is bustling every Sunday in season from 9am– 1pm with vendors sharing their bountiful selection of organic produce, beef and poultry, specialty foods, gourmet treats, handmade soaps and healing balms – even mini potted succulent gardens, a trending item this past season. The borough maintains safety and convenience to the farmers market, now in its seventh season. Parking is widely available and free of cost, while traffic lanes are narrowed—just for one block—to accommodate more than 20 vendors in this open-air community setting. As the morning sun stretches westward from the City of Reading, the row of businesses lining the block provide shade for the vendors along the sidewalk, making “first-thing” the most comfortable time to shop during the season’s hottest months. The West Reading Farmers’ Market (WRFM) is open every Sunday from May through the end of November, providing access to fresh products grown locally and organically, free of pesticides, and created with nutritious intent or specially made 18
Avenues Spring 2014
by hand. At this open-air community market, the farmers’ market mirrors as an art form, offering the community fresh, fun treats: gluten-free baked goods, shoo-fly pies and breads, fresh flower bouquets and direct trade coffee that is ground, brewed and dripped fresh before your eyes.
The proud smiles you see will remind you of the ART that is found in MARKET, and thrives in this community. Ask any vendor how they were inspired to begin their farmers’ market career. Whether it’s their first season or their seventh, most will share their reply as a simple confession: “I began doing this in my home…and now I’m here!” For some vendors, the market became a format to share their perfected recipes—some passed on by family or tradition—and discover the personal freedom to explore different taste areas or styles that are widely accepted by weekly market-goers. *Lisa Cascario Pleiss, a.k.a. “The Pizzelle Lady,” says, “When my daughter got married, I made about 800 pizzelles for her wedding. After that, I knew I could do anything when it comes to these, and so I began to test new flavors and methods.” What started as something simple—beginning in a kitchen, patio or backyard— has inspired individuals to grow past the boundaries of their product’s origins and bring their treasured goods to this curbside market. For many, hosting a stand at the WRFM is a way to foster the creative process
that translates into a contribution for the greater community. Produce farmers are also on-hand to explain the meaning behind certified organic, and what concerns pesticides and synthetic fertilizers present to our health when used in mainstream growing practices. Educating consumers about their products that promote healthier lifestyle influences fosters the WRFM’s mission to preserve the strength and diversity within the community. Whether it’s a yoga practice, brunch with friends, Sunday morning worship service at the neighborhood churches, or perhaps an
unexpected dash down to the local drugstore—adding the farmers’ market to your day becomes a bonus. Stroll through the fresh picks and locally grown goods and you may find the perfect artisan bread to pair with Sunday dinner, or a fresh herb wreath that will help flavor upcoming meals. Warm strudel made with no preservatives, mushrooms grown free of chemicals and unsuspecting foods that meet even the most specific of dietary needs— is shared by these farming, gardening and baking artists who raise the community’s awareness of health-conscious decisions we could be making. ARTS & CULTURE //// gallery features
Nan Morrissey with her ceramic “Red Fox.” Photo by Blair Seitz.
A
rt Plus Gallery features the sculptures of founding member Nan Morrissey in March and April. The Opening reception will be 2ⁿd Friday, March 14, 5–8pm. Nan is one of four current members who helped establish this artists’ cooperative thirteen years ago to showcase local artists’ works. While many old members have left and new artists have come since then, the gallery continues to function as a non-profit completely run by its twenty-five members. The members believe strongly in supporting one another and the neighborhood by promoting local art on Penn Avenue. Nan has always been interested in 3-dimensional form. When she moved to Wyomissing in 1965, her skills had been honed by studying with sculptors in Boston, Annapolis and Colorado, learning to carve wood and stone, and to weld, as well as to model in clay and plasticine. Some of her clay figures have been cast in bronze by a Lancaster foundry; others are finished with glaze or paint. Nan’s garage serves as a studio where she simultaneously worked at carving, welding and modeling different mediums. Animals and figures are favorite subjects, often portrayed in a whimsical mode. A variety of Nan’s sculptures will be shown in March and April. Her largest piece, “Wrestling Bear Cubs,” is carved in cherry wood. Some of her colorful animals, a selection from her masks, abstract works and some of her current studies of hands will also be on display. Other art on display at Art Plus Gallery will be the acrylic and oil paintings of guest artist Charlene Jobe in the guest gallery, new works by members, and community works in the outreach gallery rooms. The West Reading Tavern next door will be showing works by three Art Plus photographers: John Bolig, Brian Clark and Blair Seitz.

Jewelry • Home décor • Wedding gifts • It’s A Gift! is stocked with high-quality items perfect for special occasions or a bit of self-indulgence. Many of our items are unique, one of a kind and artisan made. We have an incredible selection of infant, children’s, women’s and home decor items. Thanks to the efforts of more than 60 dedicated volunteers, our nonprofit shop has been able to contribute the proceeds from our sales to local charities—many of which benefit women and children. A gift from the Woman’s Exchange is definitely a gift that gives twice!
