About Downtown Inc
Downtown Inc represents the interests of property owners, merchants and residents in the revitalization and beautification of the core 26 blocks of York City.
The “go-to” organization for all things downtown, Downtown Inc focuses on making downtown York a great place to live, work, shop and dine. The organization is recognized across the Commonwealth as a model Main Street program, winning awards and recognition from state and national trade associations. Downtown Inc’s areas of focus, as consistent with the four points of Main Street, include economic development, physical appearance, promotions, marketing, safety and administration.
Downtowns Matter
• A downtown is home to locally owned, independent businesses that keep 68% of their revenue recycling back into the community. • A healthy downtown enhances property values and expands the City’s tax base. • A vibrant downtown creates a sense of place and pride for the community. • Downtowns can serve as an incubator—for new, small, and locally owned businesses. • A downtown serves as a community space where members of all segments of the community can come together for parades and other community events. • The downtown is usually home to a community’s arts and cultural offerings—which also act as an economic driver and catalyst for business development.

Downtown York
fall/winter 2015
Harley-Davidson Motor Co. and The City of York will present the 22nd annual York Bike Night on Friday, September 23, 2016, from 6 to 10pm in Downtown York. The street party features a motorcycle parade, food and merchandise vendors, live entertainment, and informational booths. The event is held in conjunction with the annual Harley-Davidson York Vehicle Operations open house weekend. West Market Street becomes a sea of endless motorcycles as 2,000 bikes storm their way east from the York Expo Center for the annual Bike Night Parade, which starts its engine at 6pm and lasts about an hour. Spectators line the sidewalks in WeCo and the Market District to see the parade rev by. Organizers recommend coming early to secure a good spot along Market Street. You may also want to consider bringing earplugs, as the festivities can get quite loud.
Parade participants, led by a group of select Sportster motorcycles, will leave the York Expo Center at 6pm, traveling east on Market Street to Broad Street, and then travel back to the Continental Square area. York Bike Night brings people from all over the United States and even Canada. “It’s fun to walk around and look at all the license plates,” says Mary Yeaple, York Bike Night organizer for York City Special Events. The Motor Maids, a diverse group of women motorcyclists united through a passion for riding while fostering a positive image and promoting safe riding skills, have been named Grand Marshals of this year’s parade. Hailing from across the United States and Canada, riding motorcycles of every make, model and color of the rainbow, The Motor Maids are the true “Ladies of Motorcycling.” Immediately following the bike parade, downtown erupts into one big street party until 10pm with live entertainment on four different stages, food vendors, information displays, exhibitors, artisans, face painting, caricatures and more. A Bike Night favorite is the parking lot at White Rose Bar and Grill, which opens up for the evening with an outdoor bar and live music. Entertainment confirmed to date includes Smokin' Gunnz, Bluesman Tom Larsen Band, York College Rock Band, and Pete Geist. Dale E. Anstine Personal Injury Attorneys, First Energy Foundation, Green Mountain Energy, Stambaugh Law, Fox 43, 96.1 SOX, and MediaOnePA are co-sponsors of the event. York Bike Night is a free event. Downtown York
fall/winter 2016
On the heels of the spring launch of
the York County History Center’s new name and brand, this autumn’s events celebrate the healthy and vibrant future of the organization. With a right-sized new museum planned at the Met-Ed Steam Generating Plant building, the History Center promises a cohesive experience focused on interactive engagement and storytelling. The new attraction is expected to open in 2020. In the spirit of the new brand, two mission-defined events are on the fall calendar, with York County history at the center of each.
History On the Half Shell is the new name for the Oyster Festival, a 42-year tradition, coming to the Agricultural & Industrial Museum on October 16. From 11am to 4pm, oysters continue to be in the spotlight, served stewed, nude or fried, along with steamed shrimp. For non-seafood palates, pork barbecue, hot dogs, and mac and cheese will be available. And there are always fresh apple fritters, and the bountiful baked goods of the Friends of the York County History Center. Top it all off with cold beer, wine, soda and apple cider! Photo Credit: Seth Nenstiel Photography
The experience, however, is more than just the fabulous food! Throughout the museum, artisan demonstrators will share their crafts, talking with visitors and bringing their passions to life. Live music provides the background, and admission is free (food is a la carte). This is a family friendly event with plenty of children’s activities.
History On the Half Shell
Pulitzer Prize-winner Jon Meacham
appears on November 3, as part of the History Center’s Distinguished Speaker Series at the Wyndham Garden York. The evening will include dinner and a book-signing. Meacham’s latest presidential biography, Destiny and Power: The American Odyssey of George Herbert Walker Bush, debuted at #1 on the New York Times best seller list. Individual tickets for members go on sale August 29 and to non-members on September 6 and are available at yorkhistorycenter.org or by phone at 717-848-1587.

KABLE HOUSE PRESENTS September 24
Roctheks t e k r Ma
Kable House Presents kicks off its third season of concerts on September 24 with a performance by Woody Pines, from Nashville, TN. Kable House Presents is an independent, volunteer-driven initiative that showcases national touring acts in an intimate, listening-room environment at York’s historic Central Market.
The organizers rent out the space at Central Market about once a month to host the shows. Tickets are available to the public at an accessible price point (usually around $15), and food and beverages are available for purchase during the shows from featured Central Market vendors. The series launched with generous support from the community, including grants, private contributions, and a Kickstarter campaign. It continues thanks to additional donations and season ticket sales. Kable House Presents spans a variety of genres and styles. In their first two seasons, they featured acts like Strand of Oaks, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Grammy winner Dom Flemons, Lydia Loveless, Nicholas David (a finalist on NBC’s The Voice), Patrick Sweany, and Aaron Lee Tasjan, as well as a sold-out show with the 10-piece Houston soul band The Suffers. Concertgoers can make a night of it in downtown York. There are plenty of bars, restaurants, and shops within the few blocks surrounding Central Market. Third Tuesdays york story slam is a monthly gathering where anyone can take a turn at the microphone and tell a true story based on that month’s theme.
Guests can come and just listen to other people tell stories, or they can put their name into the hat for a chance to share a story of their own according to the following rules: • Story should reflect the theme of that evening • Story should be true to the best of your recollection • Story should be about five minutes long • No notes, no props, no music - just you and the microphone Three judges are chosen from the audience and each storyteller is given scores based on content and presentation. The competition part isn’t too serious - it’s all about having a fun night together hearing each other’s stories - but the storyteller with the top score at each event wins an exclusive York Story Slam journal set from Story Supply Co. and earns a spot in the Grand Slam event at the end of the season, when all the previous winners return to vie for the title of York’s Best Storyteller. In addition to the live event, all stories are posted on YouTube and selected stories from each event are featured in a monthly podcast that is available for free through iTunes.
York Story Slam live events are held at Holy Hound Taproom in downtown York on the third Tuesday of the month. Most events sell out in advance, so those who wish to attend are encouraged to purchase tickets ahead of time. Visit yorkstoryslam.com for more details, the schedule and themes, links to past stories, and ticket information.

York: Crafted York has a rich heritage and legacy of craft. York: Crafted gives York’s makers and doers a platform to share their experience of what it means to craft and be a craftsman here in York.
York: Crafted organizers host four events per year and curate a diverse line-up of speakers. The series defines “craft” as the intersection of skill and intention. The speakers come from varied backgrounds, but they all work systematically and intentionally to create visceral experiences. Presenters utilize the 20x20 PechaKucha presentation format – 20 slides that automatically advance every 20 seconds – to talk about their craft, and how it has evolved over time. Past presentations have included a look into the worlds of painting, writing, baking bread, furniture making, alternative models for education, letterpress printing, event planning, building cigar box guitars, soapmaking, photojournalism, typography, music scoring for television, and sustainable farming. Panic at the Ballpark
The Game Will Never Be the Same Summer nights at PeoplesBank Park feature hot dogs, ice cream, great on-field baseball action, and all the characteristics you expect in the wholesome national pasttime. Normally, Yorkers have to say good-bye to all of that by late September, but beginning this year the game continues into October. Only something has gone horribly wrong. Fans entering the gates will notice it instantly – all around them. And they may not survive to warn anyone else. In the only immersive horror event in greater York, Panic at the Ballpark fills the weekends leading up to Halloween with a jaw-dropping tale, haunting effects, and enough scares and screams to fill a stadium. Three bone-chilling attractions will lead terrorized fans through the darkest corners of the ballpark and – perhaps – their minds. Walk the concourse, visit the concession stands, and go behind-the-scenes of PeoplesBank Park and see if you survive what – or who – is causing the Panic at the Ballpark. Stay tuned at www.panicattheballpark.com.

Spooky York
Downtown Dark History Walking Tours
October 18, 19, 25, 26
Quartering? Cannibals? Hauntings?
Oh my! Downtown Inc presents the Spooky York Downtown Dark History Tour, a walking tour in Downtown York with your tour guides, Meg Feeser & Kristen Evans.
This year, you have four chances to learn about York City’s dark history: • Tuesday, October 18 • Wednesday, October 19 • Tuesday, October 25 • Wednesday, October 26 The tour begins at 6pm and lasts about 90 minutes. You’ll start your journey in York’s historic Continental Square, learning about York’s place in our country’s military history and what makes a good “ghost town.” Visit York’s old York County Court House and explore the country’s most famous murder trial of the 20th century. Stop by the historic Yorktowne Hotel, where you’ll not only meet the friendly ghost who haunts the eighth floor, but you’ll also hear the story behind the lobby’s stuffed pygmy goat. Across the street at the Lafayette Club, you’ll be introduced to a haunt who just can’t stop working. At the William Goodridge House, learn about York’s connection to the Underground Railroad. Around the corner on North George Street you’ll hear perhaps the weirdest tale on the tour—the story of the death of P.T. Barnum’s Cannibal Dwarf. Outside the National House Hotel (also known as the Holy Hound Taproom), discuss both the father of the ghost tour genre and a Revolutionary War general who’s buried in two different places.
The Spooky York Tour wraps up at the Colonial Complex, where you may or may not capture a spirit in your photos (previous guests believe they have!).
This tour always sells out—don’t wait to get your tickets: www.downtownyorkpa.com/spookyyork

“We Can Build This City” at the 2016 Global Cardboard Challenge! Saturday, October 8, 2016 Come out and play, York! Inspired by the short film, “Caine’s Arcade,” the Global Cardboard Challenge is an annual world-wide event presented by the Imagination Foundation that celebrates child creativity and the role communities can play in fostering it. Last year, 125,000 people from 46 countries joined together in a global day of play to build anything they could dream up using cardboard, recycled materials and imagination. This year, York will take part in the fun, and use our cardboard challenge to build the York City of our wildest imagination! To help commemorate the 275th Anniversary of the City of York, our Global Cardboard Challenge participants will work together to create the York Cityscape in a six-foot tall version using corrugated cardboard, recycled supplies, and imagination. From 10am2pm on October 8th at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum at 217 West Princess Street, people of all ages can construct the cityscape of their dreams during the Global Cardboard Challenge day of play. Thanks to support from York Container and the Cultural Alliance of York County, we’ll supply the cardboard, glue, and recycled supplies. You bring the creativity! After the Global Cardboard Challenge event on October 8th, all the corrugated buildings will be laid out into the downtown York streetscape inside the Agricultural and Industrial Museum so visitors can walk through the six-foot tall structures as if they are walking the streets of York City. The “We Can Build This City” streetscape installation will remain on display for the public to enjoy through the end of November. For more information on the 2016 “We Can Build This City” Global Cardboard Challenge and to sign up, visit www.facebook.com/ wecanbuildthiscity or call 717-812-9255.

York Halloween Parade Makes 67th Run
October 30
The York Halloween Parade returns October 30 from 2-4pm, thanks to Eventive and York Traditions Bank. Get into the Halloween spirit through the 67-year-old York tradition that brings the whole community together for a day of costumes, fun and local pride. This year’s parade once again features the support of local schools. Dallastown Area High School art teacher Tom Myers says his students are looking forward to contributing to the fun by again painting windows of downtown businesses, a tradition brought back last year after a long absence. “I think it’s great!” Myers said. “Kids are excited about it because it gets them out of the classroom but it also links them to the outside community and the real world.”

The Halloween Parade can be dated to 1897 when York Manufacturing, now Johnson Controls, started an annual Halloween procession. It later became a city-wide event, according to Jeffrey Rodengen’s ‘The Legend of York International.’ “Before I moved here, I had never seen people decorate their houses for Halloween,” says Eric Menzer, president of the York Revolution, who presents the York Halloween Parade. The 2-mile parade steps off at West Market Street and Richland Avenue, near the York Expo Center, and proceeds down Market Street through downtown York, ending at Broad Street. Thousands of spectators line West Market Street, seated in lawn chairs and on blankets, to watch the parade march by.
Sweetest Pint Beer and Pumpkin Tour November 5 You’ve tried pumpkin-flavored beers, but have you ever paired your beer with pumpkin? On Saturday, November 5, you’ll have the chance to do just that on the Sweetest Pint Downtown Beer and Pumpkin Tasting Tour, presented by The Beer Ace to benefit Downtown Inc. The Sweetest Pint Downtown Tasting Tours are a series of downtown pub and restaurant crawls that marry craft beer with inspired dishes. “There’s really a limitless opportunity for what food groups you can pair with beer,” says Nate Fochtman, vice president of craft and business development at Ace Distributing. The fall tour pairs pumpkin-infused plates with fall beers at seven downtown locations. Expect both savory and sweet dishes to excite and surprise your palate. Past tours have featured menu items like creamy pumpkin soup, pumpkin cream cheese soft pretzels and candied pumpkin seed donuts. “We really encourage the chefs to think outside of the box and have some fun with their pairing menus,” says Meagan Feeser, marketing director of Downtown Inc and organizer of the tours. The Sweetest Pint Tours’ appeal goes beyond just being a foodie or beer event. They present an opportunity for creative collaboration among downtown eateries and serve as a great introduction to the downtown York dining scene. As one past attendee, Danille Carroll of Springettsbury Township says, “We like being able to just see what downtown has to offer. We also like to eat, so this is a great excuse to do a lot of that.” Sweetest Pint tickets are limited to 150 attendees and sell out quickly. If you're looking for an opportunity to establish a new holiday tradition for your family, look no further than the upcoming holiday series curated by the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center. The Kinsley Construction Holiday Series kicks off with NBC’s “The Sing-Off ” Season 4 winners, Home Free. The country-tinged a cappella quintet released their latest chart-topping album Country Evolution (Columbia Records) last September and will bring their high-energy show that meshes Nashville standards with holiday hits dipped in country flavor to The Strand Theatre on November 16. The Wizards of Winter will return on December 1 with their musical intensity and stage theatrics in a holiday spectacle, “The Arctic Flyer.” The Wizards of Winter features the mid-Atlantic’s finest rock and progressive musicians, including former members of The Trans-Siberian Orchestra, and will perform a mix of classic holiday hits plus their own original material. One of the most beloved holiday traditions, Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol, will come to The Strand Theatre on December 13. Performed by The Nebraska Theatre Caravan, the production weaves traditional Christmas carols throughout the narrative, enlivening the beloved story of Bob Cratchit, Ebenezer Scrooge and Tiny Tim.

Small Business Saturday
November 26
#shopsmallyork
While everyone knows that
Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) is the official start of the holiday shopping season for malls and big-box stores, small independent retailers look to the following day to jumpstart their season. Small Business Saturday, which American Express launched in 2010 and promotes heavily, has become one of the busiest days of the year for many independent retailers. In 2015, total spending among U.S. consumers who were aware of Small Business Saturday reached $16.2 billion, an increase of 14 percent from $14.3 billion in 2014. If you spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in your local economy. If you spend the same at a large business, only $43 stays in the local economy.

Downtown York
fall/winter 2016
While Black Friday may focus on the big-box retailers, Small Business Saturday is all about community. Only your neighborhood shop can provide
that personal touch and make both the gift—and the thought—count. “We add the love,” says Chris Clarke, owner of Sunrise Soap Co. (29 N. Beaver Street).
“I definitely love York City,” Pepper’s Grille at Central Market Owner Steve Walker says. “I love the community that everybody has here. I love the support we get from our other fellow businesses in the market, and surrounding businesses. It’s a great feeling.” And on Small Business Saturday, that love is definitely returned. Nearly twothirds of consumers who plan to shop on Small Business Saturday say they are motivated by the contributions that small businesses make to their community, according to the survey.
At Kimman’s Co. (57 N. Beaver Street), owner Caroline Morris has seen this to be true.
“On Small Business Saturday last year, a woman reached out and grabbed my arm and said, ‘I’m here to support you today,’” says Morris. “That meant everything to us.” That day, Kimman’s customers are nearly elbow to elbow and the line snakes out of the door. “It’s our biggest day of the year,” says Morris. Hilary Arthur, owner of Arthur & Daughters (49 N. Beaver Street) encourages all shoppers to come downtown to York for Small Business Saturday.
“We have amazing gift options at all the wonderful stores,” says Arthur. “You’re going to get the most incredible personalized service and you’re going to be contributing to your community.” Downtown York celebrates Small Business Saturday in style, with dozens of downtown retailers offering earlier shopping hours, discounts, promotions and gifts with purchase. Arthur & Daughters will greet early-morning shoppers with mimosas and cake. Expect similar treats (like free coffee) and rewards at shops all across downtown York, where you’ll also receive a free #ShopSmall tote bag with your purchase. For information on Small Business Saturday specials, Like Downtown York Pa on Facebook (www.facebook.com/DowntownYorkPa) or visit www.downtownyorkpa.com.
Black Friday Start your shopping season in line at White Rose Bar & Grill early on Friday, November 25. Each year on Black Friday, White Rose offers gift cards valued at $50 for just $25 to the first 500 people in line. Hundreds of shoppers line up outside the restaurant, located at 48 N. Beaver Street, to snatch up the popular deal. “Every year we completely sell out in an hour and a half,” says Jeremiah Anderson, general manager and partner at the restaurant. Don’t despair if you aren’t one of the first 500: after the half-priced gift cards are gone, for every $50 you spend on gift cards, you’ll still receive a $10 promotional card to use at the White Rose. White Rose will offer the same deal this year and give additional shoppers a little boost. After the first 500 cards are gone, anybody who buys a $50 gift card will receive a $10 gift card. For information on other downtown eateries offering Black Friday gift certificate specials, Like Downtown York Pa on Facebook (www.facebook.com/DowntownYorkPa) or visit www.downtownyorkpa.com.

The Parliament Arts Organization will hold its second-annual Holiday Art Market on December 3rd and 4th, creating an indoor marketplace for holiday shoppers. The Bond of York, a formerly vacant industrial building revitalized into an elegantly modern wedding and events venue at 134 E. King St., will be transformed into the ultimate curated marketplace with holiday ambiance.
Marketing Opportunities Available
The event will feature: • More than 40 artists, crafters, and unique artisans from all over the East Coast • Food trucks and traditional holiday food/snacks • Live music • Tree trimming • Family and children’s activities • And much more! The market offers members of the public a chance to purchase unique gifts they wouldn't find at box stores, as the paintings, home decor items, and other wares sold at the event are handmade by artisans and aren’t affiliated with larger franchises or corporate operations. The event is juried and artists are selected for the uniqueness of their products and the quality of the work, with preference given to those selling handmade items. This annual event also supports artists by giving them access to a broad range of new customers, and it attracts shoppers to downtown York in an era when many people head to suburban strip malls or the Internet to purchase gifts. More than 2,500 people attended the Holiday Art Market last year, its first year, during which it was only held on one day. The market will be held 10am to 6pm both days, with members-only VIP access from 9:30am to 10:30am. For more info, visit www.parliamentyork.org. downtownyorkpa.com

In downtown York, just one New Year countdown is not enough. York starts ringing in the New Year at 6pm, at the first of three countdown events that will welcome 2017. Start your New Year’s Eve festivities at Mudhook Brewing Company (34 N. Cherry Lane), where they bring old world flair to the holiday by celebrating Belgian-style. The event marks the release of their Belgian Dubbel brew, a brown ale with “understated bitterness, fairly heavy body and pronounced fruitiness with cereal character,” according to Mudhook owner, Jeff Lau. Partygoers can also dine on traditional Belgian fare like Belgian Stoofvlees (stew) and freshly made Belgian Waffles. At 6pm—midnight in Brussels—the crowd moves outside to Cherry Lane to watch the infamous Pint Drop. “Each city has its own traditions of dropping a rose, or bologna (Lebanon) to kick off the New Year,” says Lau. “Since we’re a brewing company, we’ll be dropping a pint.” For more information on the Belgian New Year celebration, follow Mudhook’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/mudhookbrewing.
The City of York has two fun downtown celebrations planned to ring in the New Year on December 31st. If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve event to accommodate all ages, bring your little ones to Central Market (34 W. Philadelphia Street) for a special Children’s Countdown powered by Shipley Energy from 6pm to 8pm. Enjoy complimentary hats and noisemakers for youngsters, family-friendly entertainment, inflatables, photo backdrops and props, glitter tattoos, face painting and a balloon drop countdown at 8pm. Central Market vendors will be open with food and beverages for purchase during the festivities, and WARM 103.3’s Liz Bell and Chris Tyler will serve as emcees. For more information on this kid-friendly event, follow Central Market York on Facebook, www.facebook.com/CentralMarketYork. Event organizers will be compiling a list of related special events happening nearby throughout the evening for those looking to spend New Year’s Eve downtown. Of course, at midnight you don’t want to miss the traditional white rose drop in Continental Square. As midnight approaches, the community is invited to gather in the Square for a countdown to the New Year. The crowd begins to assemble around 11:30pm to count down the last few seconds of 2016 and watch the brightly-lit white rose make its descent down the side of the former Citizens Bank building on the northeast corner of Continental Square. Once the white rose drops, a dazzling fireworks display, sponsored by Republic Services, lights up the sky and welcomes 2017 with a bang, literally. Co-sponsors for the New Year’s Eve celebrations are WARM 103.3, MediaOnePA, C.S. Davidson, and Block Business Solutions. Special thanks to the City of York General Authority for their assistance with the fireworks display.
