HR Workshop for Start-ups and Small Business Owners
S
usquehanna SCORE, the five-county non-profit small-business mentoring and education service, and the Shippensburg University SBDC, are partnering to produce a special workshop on HR Essentials for Small Business. The three-hour session will be held Wednesday, July 27, 2016, from 9 a.m. to noon at HACCYork, 2101 Pennsylvania Avenue, York, PA, 17404, in the Goodling Building, room YG110. Kellie Boysen, MBA, PHR, SHRM-CP, and owner of Alternative HR, will lead the workshop sponsored by Express Employment Professionals. The goal of the workshop is to provide details about how HR issues can impact a small business, such as what actions will keep a business out of HR legal trouble, and what initiatives can create a positive work environment that lowers employee turnover.
The HR Essentials workshop is specially designed for start-ups and small business owners who want to hire top talent for their team. The workshops will answer questions such as: • • •
When and how do I obtain background checks? What can I ask in an interview? What’s a proper way to let an employee go?
In addition, content and discussion will cover compliance in light of the ever-changing legal and legislative environment. One key topic will be the new Fair Labor Standards Act/Overtime rules that go into effect December 1, 2016. The $25 workshop registration site is at www. susquehanna.score.org or call Susquehanna SCORE at 717.845.8830.

What Are You Doing In June? By: Louise Heine, York County Convention & Visitors Bureau
S
ometimes you’ll hear locals ask, “What is there to do?” Our community is filled with new businesses and attractions that make it easy to find something happening from all aspects around the county. York County’s tourism brand is the Factory Tour Capital of the World and there’s no better time for you to get reacquainted with the wonders of modern manufacturing than during the 18th Annual Made in America Tours Event, June 15 - 18. There’s nothing quite like tasting warm potato chips straight off the line at Martin’s Potato Chips, which produces more than a million bags of chips a month. Serious snackers can stick with the sweet and salty treats theme and visit Utz Quality Foods and Snyder’s of Hanover. They can even check out Revonah Pretzel, which still uses a 70-year-old hearth brick and stone oven to make twisted treats just like Grandpa did.

From handmade soap at Sunrise Soap Company to witnessing the masterful work of experienced artisans at Bluett Bros. Violins, George’s Furniture and the York Time Institute, you’ll leave astounded at the attention to detail and the beauty of the finished products.
The public is invited to gather for a sp ecial kickoff event at 8:30 a.m., June 15, at Martin’s Potato Chips. 75th Anniver sary Tins will be handed ou t to the first 75 on the tour (one tin per c ouple/family).
Of course, you’ll have to make time to visit the HarleyDavidson Motor Company, Vehicle Operations, where you’ll go on a journey through the facility that produces the Softail®, Touring, CVOTM and Trike models. Other factory tours include DS Wood Bats, Microtrac Inc.

and Oakworks Inc. Learn how wine goes from grape to glass at Naylor Wine Cellars, Adams County Winery and The Vineyard and Brewery at Hershey - just three stops on the Mason-Dixon Wine Trail. Plus, Brewery Products returns with one of the event’s most popular tours. Discover York County’s industrial heritage at the York County Heritage Trust’s Agricultural & Industrial Museum and marvel at The Wallace-Cross Mill Historical Site, where you’ll find a working grist mill dating back to the 1820’s.
Don’t forget the kids will love visiting the cows at Perrydell Farm and Walk-Le Holsteins. Other things to do include Byrnes Health Education Center, Hanover Area Arts Guild, The Sonnewalk Farm, Steam Into History, Indian Steps Museum, Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village and the Teaching Museum for Fiber Arts and Textiles.
