Falling in love with downtown York Downtown Inc
is beyond pleased to introduce Downtown York, our new triannual downtown magazine. Within these pages you’ll find information about upcoming special events, as well as a full guide to dining, shopping and attractions in our downtown. Though I was born and raised in York (and a West York Area High School alum!), it took moving back home after a ten-year absence for me to fully embrace my hometown. The growth and change of our downtown in the five years since my return have been nothing short of awe-inspiring and I’m proud to now call myself part of the organization that is working to spearhead downtown’s forward movement. Downtown Inc is the organization working to enhance and encourage investment in York’s central business district. We do that through business recruitment and retention; advertising, marketing and special events; beautifying the landscape and improving physical elements; and working with local police to make downtown a safe place to visit.
As you flip through the pages of Downtown York, I think you’ll see that our organization and our community’s hard work is paying off. Public art. Eclectic dining. Craft brews and cocktails. Two historic farmers markets. Haute to handmade shopping. The 2015 Pennsylvania Trail of the Year. Championship Atlantic League Baseball. First Fridays. Second Saturdays. Who knew you could see it all in York? I did and soon you will too. Get to know downtown York—again or for the first time. Visit www.downtownyorkpa.com and Like Downtown York PA on Facebook to stay in-the-know on all the fantastic things happening in our town. Enjoy,

What trends will 2015 bring? Make plans to join us downtown September 1 through 5 for your look at what will be fashionable this fall.

Downtown York fall/winter 2015
foodstruck, the free-admission food truck
party, returns for its fourth installment on Sunday, September 6, from 11am-6pm in York City’s beautiful Penn Park.
foodstruck was born on North Pershing Avenue on a rainy evening in October 2013, when 1,700 attendees ate street food under ponchos and umbrellas, despite nine inches of rain falling in Central PA that day. The second foodstruck in April 2014 saw nearly 9,000 attendees again fill North Pershing Avenue on yet another rainy York County night. The event moved to Penn Park in August 2014, expanding from one city block to four square blocks of green space right in the heart of the City of York. On September 6, foodstruck will host 40+ trucks and carts serving a wide range of specialty foods including tacos, BBQ, pizza, Mediterranean, artisanal, seafood, vegan and gluten-free dishes, cupcakes, ice cream and much more. Trucks will be traveling from as far as Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, New Jersey, Delaware and Baltimore, in addition to trucks that call Central PA home.
You won’t go thirsty at foodstruck: event organizers have partnered with CrocodileDog Marketing to include the Treasure Island Beer Garden, bringing craft beers, wine and wine slushies to foodstruck. The foodstruck market returns again with 30+ vendors selling handmade wares, packaged foods and even vinyl records. Market vendors will alternate with food trucks to line the perimeter of the park. foodstruck is a family friendly event. Thanks to Bring On Play, the group responsible for building play structures in our city parks, partygoers will enjoy several large playgrounds and the addition of the new Penn Park Splash Pad, which celebrated its ribbon cutting in July. Bring your own chair or blanket, enjoy some local musicians and eat as much as you desire in the beautiful surroundings of the City of York’s historic Penn Park at foodstruck. For more information, visit www.foodstruckyork.com or Like foodstruck on Facebook: www.facebook.com/foodstruckyork.

Hidden Art Walking Tour Thursday, September 17
Art is all around you in downtown York
Take a behind-the-scenes tour of historic
downtown properties where beautiful and unexpected masterpieces take center stage. It’s the Hidden Art Walking Tour, led by York enthusiast, JJ Sheffer, and PA State Representative Kevin Schreiber.
From 6-8pm, tourgoers will discover things never imagined behind the doors of downtown buildings. Points of interest from previous tours include the York County Courthouse, whose three domes were inspired by the Florence Cathedral, and the Bonham House, whose walls are adorned with portraits and landscapes painted by the owner, Horace Bonham. If you ask your guides nicely, they may tell you the tale of Horace’s daughter, who allegedly haunts the home. As you travel the streets of downtown York, don’t forget to look up in order to take in all the styles of architecture York City has to offer. With your eyes toward the sky, you’ll catch a peek at the bear gargoyle on the corner of 2 West Market Street in Continental Square and the eagle perched near the top of the former Citizens Bank at the corner of George and Market streets, the site of the Continental Congress treasury, an early version of the Federal Reserve. Another tour stop is the York Water Company building at (130 E. Market Street). Designed by architect William B. Billmeyer to celebrate water, the building was completed in 1930. Zodiac signs can be seen above the windows as a nod to York’s agricultural roots and farmers’ reliance on the stars. Take note of the featured stained-glass windows, ceiling of original frescoes, metal doors made to look like wood and original floral window treatments. Take a pause in Cherry Lane Park, where you’ll view Central Market, Mudhook Brewing Co. and replicas of paintings by Pennsylvania German folk artist Lewis Miller along Clarke Avenue. On this Hidden Art Walking Tour, not only will you get a sneak peek at some of downtown York’s more artistic treasures, you’ll also get the inside scoop on York’s Cultural District happenings and most inspiring hot spots. If you go: The Downtown Hidden Art Walking Tour Thursday, September 17 from 6-8pm. Tickets are $15 and are required. Purchase tickets at yorkhiddenart2015.eventbrite.com.
“York is literally an open-air gallery. All you have to do is look around you,” says Kevin Schreiber, PA State Representative and Hidden Art Tourguide.

Putting Downtown First Thursday, September 10 For 15 years, Downtown Inc has been recognizing key players in downtown’s revitalization through the Downtown First Awards.
The Downtown First Awards are presented annually to celebrate the people and businesses that put downtown first through their commitments of volunteer service, financial support and advocacy efforts. There are multiple award categories: outstanding small business, large business, individual, volunteer, individual within an organization, merchant and new business. This year marks not only the 15th anniversary of the Awards but a record number of nominees. Nominees are selected by their peers and winners are chosen by an independent selection committee, which is made up of York City residents whose identities are secret. The 2015 Downtown First Awards will be held at Logos Academy, 250 W. King Street, on Thursday, September 10 at 5pm. The cocktail reception held prior to the Awards presentation will be catered by West King Catering and Events, a company owned by Logos Enterprises that hires people who are unemployed, underemployed or can’t find work because they have a prior criminal record. The idea behind Logos Enterprises is to employ more people who are connected to the school—including parents, grandparents and guardians of students—and provide them with opportunities, says Aaron Anderson, the CEO and head of Logos Academy. “We are so excited to be holding the 15th Annual Downtown First Awards at Logos Academy and utilizing their catering company for our event,” explains Meagan Feeser, director of marketing for Downtown Inc. “We are celebrating people who are doing good in our community in a place that is doing good for our community.” Tickets to the Downtown First Awards are $25 and can be purchased at www.downtownyorkpa.com/downtownfirstawards.

York Bike Night
Friday, September 25 “The smell of gasoline
and grilled sausage permeated the cool night air as sounds of revving bikes and rock-and-roll echoed through Continental Square,” wrote Gordon Rago of last year’s York Bike Night. Every year in September, West Market Street becomes a sea of endless motorcycles as 2,000 bikes storm their way east from the York Expo Center for the annual Bike Night Parade, which starts its engine at 6pm and lasts about an hour. Spectators line the sidewalks in WeCo and the Market District to see the parade rev by. Organizers recommend coming early to secure a good spot along Market Street. You may also want to consider bringing earplugs, as the festivities can get quite loud.
“Expect to hear motorcycles all weekend. York Bike Night is a great event for the local economy. It fills the restaurants. It fills the hotels. It fills the shops downtown.” – Mary Yeaple, York Bike Night organizer for York City Special Events.
“It was glorious,” Spinner “Spin Man” Crump, a bike club member from Coatesville, says on riding in last year’s parade. “They were all looking at me and showing exuberance for me.” Fellow club member Marlon “Junkyard Dog” Miller agreed, chiming in, “People were admiring my bike. There’s nothing like that.” York Bike Night brings people from all over the United States and even Canada. “It’s fun to walk around and look at all the license plates,” says Mary Yeaple, York Bike Night organizer for York City Special Events. Immediately following the bike parade, downtown erupts into one big street party until 10pm with live entertainment on four different stages, food vendors, information displays, exhibitors, artisans, face painting, caricatures and more. A Bike Night favorite is the parking lot at White Rose Bar & Grill, which opens up for the evening with an outdoor bar and live music. This year’s Bike Night theme is “Trikes,” and the parade will be led by a select group of trike motorcycles, which will then be on display at Continental Square throughout the evening. York Bike Night is a free event. For more information on York Bike Night, visit www.yorkcity.org/bikenight. Please note: The following streets will be closed from 5pm until the event concludes: Market Street from Pershing to Duke, George Street from King to Philadelphia, and Beaver Street from King to Philadelphia. Parking restrictions will begin at 1pm.

All Hallows’ Weekend, traditionally the weekend preceding Halloween, is filled with fall fun and spooky surprises for big kids and little kids alike. Yorkers really love Halloween traditions.

Downtown York fall/winter 2015
“Before I moved here, I had never seen people decorate their houses for Halloween,” says Eric Menzer, president of the York Revolution, who produces the York Halloween Parade. All Hallows’ Weekend actually begins on Wednesday, October 21 and Thursday, October 22 as Downtown Inc presents the Spooky York Downtown Dark History Tour. A walking tour lasting two and a half hours, this historical stroll makes stops at historical locations with haunted pasts in our downtown. You’ll learn about York’s ties to the Underground Railroad, the famous Hex Murder Trial, haunted theaters and hotels, and even a gory tale involving cannibals and exhumation. Stories on this tour have been curated by local historian Scott Butcher, who penned the book, Spooky York, Pennsylvania. Check-in begins at 6pm in Continental Square, which will serve as step-off point. Tickets are required for this popular tour, which historically sells out every year: www.downtownyorkpa.com/allhallowsweekend.
Masquerade Ball On Saturday, October 24 at 6pm, it’s time to go incognito at Downtown Inc’s Masquerade Ball at the historic Penn Market (380 W. Market Street). Powered by Shipley Energy, the Masquerade Ball is Downtown Inc’s signature fundraising gala, featuring a cocktail hour with delightful surprises, an exquisite autumn-themed meal catered by The Accomac, an immersive audio-visual light show and dancing into the late hours. Black tie attire is optional; masks are not. Penn Market is York’s most historic covered market, opening its doors in 1866. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, leaders in the Bottstown section of York sought to solve a problem: they had a growing population and no market to service those folks, plus farmers in that west end of York City. They created what is today called the Penn Street Farmers Market. Today, Penn Market is the anchor of WeCo, the neighborhood west of the Codorus Creek, and is the focus of revitalization efforts set on bringing the market back to its former glory. On October 24, the market will shine as the host of the Masquerade Ball and its splendor will be unmasked to those in attendance. The Masquerade Ball is a sell-out event, so attendees are encouraged to secure their tickets soon at www.downtownyorkpa.com/ masqueradeball.
Angel Amble/Devil Dash 5K For folks who want to make room for all the forthcoming Halloween candy, the Angel Amble/Devil Dash 5k takes place on Sunday, October 25 at 1pm. This is the second annual run, which benefits the Angels of the Parks program. Angels of the Park is designed to get community organizations and local businesses involved in helping to renovate York City parks by adopting a park and helping to renovate it through volunteering hours and/or raising funds to purchase supplies and maintenance materials. The 5k takes place in Continental Square, Market Street and George Street and immediately precedes the York Halloween Parade. Pre-registration required and can be done by visiting www. yorkhalloweenparade.com.
Halloween Parade Presented by York Traditions Bank and produced by the York Revolution and Eventive, the York Halloween Parade is back for its 66th year with floats, marching bands and more. The Halloween Parade can be dated to 1897 when York Manufacturing, now Johnson Controls, started an annual Halloween procession. It later became a city-wide event, according to Jeffrey Rodengen’s ‘The Legend of York International.’ The 2-mile parade steps off at West Market Street and Richland Avenue, near the York Expo Center, and proceeds down Market Street through downtown York, ending at Broad Street. Thousands of spectators line West Market Street, seated in lawn chairs and on blankets, to watch the parade march by. For more information, visit www.yorkhalloweenparade.com. downtownyorkpa.com

Window Shopping
First Friday, November 6 It’ll begin to look a lot like Christmas in downtown York on First Friday, November 6, when downtown boutiques reveal their holiday windows during the “Holiday Open House.” Make plans for a window shopping tour or get a jumpstart on your holiday shopping as you walk through a downtown winter window wonderland in the Market District and Royal Square neighborhoods. Start your tour on North Beaver Street, as you check out the windows at Elizabeth & West, Watchmaker’s Daughter, Park Street Pantry, Sunrise Soap Company, Sweet Melissa’s Dream and Arthur & Daughters, whose holiday windows will be inspired by the Dior Fall 2013 Couture Show. If you’re looking for a Winter Wonderland, look no further than Kimman’s, located at the corner of North Beaver and West Philadelphia Streets. Peer into a living snow globe as the windows of one of downtown’s favorite gift shops turn into a frozen holidayscape. Turn the corner onto West Philadelphia Street to take in the holiday sights at shops like Indigo Bleu, Cherie Anne Designs and Nuts About Granola. On West Market Street, take a stroll past the windows at Clay Path Studio and My Girlfriend’s Wardrobe, while peering at York City Pretzel Company’s Christmas tree, decorated with actual pretzels (and why not stop in for a hot, fresh soft pretzel or two?).
A quick walk to the Royal Square Neighborhood, just two blocks east and one block south, will reward you with holiday sights in the windows of 56 Urban Provisions, Redeux, The Parliament, PRIME Art Supply and HIVE artspace. The entire city will be alit in holiday decorations on First Friday, December 4, for Light Up Night. Don’t miss the Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Continental Square, starting at 6pm.
Black Friday
Friday, November 27 Start your shopping season in line at White Rose Bar & Grill early on Friday, November 27. Each year on Black Friday, White Rose offers gift cards valued at $50 for just $25 to the first 500 people in line. Hundreds of shoppers line up outside the restaurant, located at 48 N. Beaver Street, to snatch up the popular deal.
“Every year we completely sell out in an hour and a half,” says Jeremiah Anderson, general manager and partner at the restaurant. Don’t despair if you aren’t one of the first 500: after the half-priced gift cards are gone, for every $50 you spend on gift cards, you’ll still receive a $10 promotional card to use at the White Rose. For information on other downtown eateries offering Black Friday gift certificate specials, Like Downtown York Pa on Facebook (www. facebook.com/DowntownYorkPa) or visit www.downtownyorkpa. com.

Small Business Saturday Saturday, November 28
While everyone knows that Black Friday (the day after Thanksgiving) is the official start of the holiday shopping season for malls and big-box stores, small independent realtors look to the following day to jumpstart their season. Small Business Saturday, which American Express launched in 2010 and promotes heavily, has become one of the busiest days of the year for many independent retailers. In 2014, more than two-thirds (67%) of the U.S. population were aware of Small Business Saturday. Those consumers reported spending $14.3 billion with independent retailers and restaurants on Small Business Saturday last year, with the average person who shopped that day spending $162.
For Small Business Saturday 2015, which falls on Saturday, November 28, Kimman’s will kick off a series of sales that will take place every Sunday through the holiday season. Shoppers can take advantage of Buy Two, Get the Third Free Sales on Kimman’s top sellers every Sunday in December.
Last year, Elizabeth & West (15 N. Beaver Street) celebrated its first Small Business Saturday, ringing up more than $3,000 in sales. It was owner Rebecca Wattenschaidt’s biggest one-day total since she opened in May 2014.
Downtown York celebrates Small Business Saturday in style, with dozens of downtown retailers offering earlier shopping hours, discounts, promotions and gifts with purchase. Arthur & Daughters will greet early-morning shoppers with mimosas and cake. Expect similar treats (like free coffee) and rewards at shops all across downtown York, where you’ll also receive a free #ShopSmall tote bag with your purchase.
For Caroline Morris, proprietor of Kimman’s (57 N. Beaver Street), the arrival of Small Business Saturday was a game changer. “It is the BIGGEST day of the year for us,” says Morris. “It is very humbling to see the number of people who turn out to shop locally on Small Business Saturday. Our customers tell us that they have stopped by just to support us and thank us! Wow!”

Most downtown boutiques in the Market District and Royal Square Neighborhood will also offer special Sunday shopping hours to accommodate your holiday shopping schedule. Here you’ll find eclectic shops and galleries filled with gifts to please even the pickiest recipient. And if you’re one of those picky recipients, many downtown shops, like Arthur & Daughters, Elizabeth & West, Indigo Bleu and Watchmaker’s Daughter, will offer “style cards” during the holiday season that women can fill out so their husbands or boyfriends know what style of fashion to buy them. Winterfest Craft Fair in Cherry Lane December 4 & 5
Find the perfect gift and experience holiday shopping like never before at a tradition that dates back to medieval Germany! The Winterfest Craft Fair is inspired by the traditional Christmas Markets in Germany like the famous Christkindlmarkt in Nuremberg. During the Middle Ages, townspeople gathered to shop in open air markets during the holiday season, and now, visitors to downtown York can do the same at Winterfest Craft Fair. Presented by YorShoppes, the fair will feature handmade goods by local artisans and crafters. From jewelry and handmade pottery to natural soaps and delicious foods, this shopping paradise in Cherry Lane will be packed with old world charm, holiday cheer and possibly that perfect present.
The first weekend of December will offer a brand new holiday shopping experience in downtown York as two holiday markets open their doors for the first time in Cherry Lane Park and Royal Square. Partake in open-air shopping at the Winterfest Craft Fair or warm up inside The Bond at the holiday Bandit Bazaar, both taking place the weekend of December 5.
YorShoppes is a pop-up retail incubator, a co-op of artisans comprised of local businesses with Etsy accounts, online-only retailers, retailers from the suburbs who want to try out a downtown location and new entrepreneurs. Knowing that there is strength in numbers, the group regularly “pops up in otherwise unused locations to add to the vitality of downtown retail. This holiday season, YorShoppes will be popping up in spectacular fashion with the inaugural Winterfest Craft Fair in Cherry Lane. For more information, visit www.yorshoppes.com.

downtown York, just one New Year countdown is not enough. York starts ringing in the New Year at 6pm, at the first of three countdown events that will welcome 2016.
Start Off... Start your New Year’s Eve festivities at Mudhook Brewing Company (34 N. Cherry Lane), where they bring old world flair to the holiday by celebrating Belgian-style. The event marks the release of their Belgian Dubbel brew, a brown ale with “understated bitterness, fairly heavy body and pronounced fruitiness with cereal character,” according to Mudhook owner, Jeff Lau. Partygoers can also dine on traditional Belgian fare like Belgian Stoofvlees (stew) and freshly made Belgian Waffles. At 6pm—midnight in Brussels—the crowd moves outside to Cherry Lane to watch the infamous Pint Drop.

Downtown York fall/winter 2015
“Each city has its own traditions of dropping a rose, or bologna (Lebanon) to kick off the New Year,” says Lau. “Since we’re a brewing company, we’ll be dropping a pint.” For more information on the Belgian New Year celebration, Follow Mudhook’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/ mudhookbrewing.
WellSupported. WellSpan is proud to support First Friday in York.
For All Ages... If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve event to accommodate all ages, bring your little ones to Central Market (34 W. Philadelphia Street) for a children’s New Year’s Eve party from 6-8pm. Enjoy complimentary hats and noisemakers for youngsters, family-friendly entertainment, inflatables, photo backdrops and props, glitter tattoos, face painting and a balloon drop countdown at 8pm. Select Central Market vendors will be open with food and beverages for sale. For more information on this kid-friendly event, follow Central Market York on Facebook, www.facebook.com/CentralMarketYork.
At Midnight... Of course, at midnight you don’t want to miss the traditional white rose drop in Continental Square. The crowd begins to assemble around 11:30pm to count down the last few seconds of 2015 and watch the brightly-lit white rose make its descent down the side of the former Citizens Bank building on the northeast corner of Continental Square. Once the white rose drops, a dazzling fireworks display lights up the sky and welcomes 2016 with a bang, literally.

Sweetest Pint
You’ve tried pumpkin-flavored beers, but have you ever paired your beer with pumpkin? On Saturday, November 7, you’ll have the chance to do just that on the Sweetest Pint Downtown Beer and Pumpkin Tasting Tour, presented by The Beer Ace to benefit Downtown Inc. The Sweetest Pint Downtown Tasting Tours are a series of downtown pub and restaurant crawls that marry craft beer with inspired dishes. “There’s really a limitless opportunity for what food groups you can pair with beer,” says Nate Fochtman, vice president of craft and business development at Ace Distributing. The fall tour pairs pumpkin-infused plates with fall beers at seven downtown locations. Expect both savory and sweet dishes to excite and surprise your palate. Past tours have featured menu items like chocolate mole pizza, chocolate ravioli, blueberry bacon blinis and strawberry jam-filled soft pretzels. The idea of pairing unexpected menu items with craft beer was born in 2012, when Wolfgang Candy Company and Gavin Advertising held the first-ever Sweetest Pint Beer and Chocolate Pub Crawl event to benefit Downtown Inc. Since then, the event has grown to include Beer and Chocolate, Beer and Berries and the Beer and Pumpkin tours and to focus as much on the food as the beer. “We really encourage the chefs to think outside of the box and have some fun with their pairing menus,” says Meagan Feeser, director of marketing of Downtown Inc and organizer of the tours. The Sweetest Pint Tours’ appeal goes beyond just being a foodie or beer event. They present an opportunity for creative collaboration among downtown eateries and serve as a great introduction to the downtown York dining scene. As one past attendee, Danille Carroll of Springettsbury Township says, “We like being able to just see what downtown has to offer. We also like to eat, so this is a great excuse to do a lot of that.” Sweetest Pint tickets are limited to 150 attendees and sell out quickly.
