know about First Fridays in downtown York…but what about Fifth Fridays?

New for 2016: the York City Independent Restaurant Association is bringing you Fifth Friday, a night to toast to the weekend in downtown York. During the months that have five Fridays in 2016— April 29, July 29, September 30, December 30—five downtown bars will offer $5 bar menus and fun drink specials. “Fifth Fridays should feel like a party in downtown York,” says Philip Given, Fifth Friday organizer. “It’s a night specifically focused on good food and drink and an excuse to come downtown—as if you needed one.”

The first Fifth Friday kicked off on January 29, 2016. Downtown revelers enjoyed bar specials like $5 crispy crab balls with Sriracha aioli and $5 Nashville hot chicken with shaved pickles at The Left Bank Restaurant and Bar; $5 sweet & sassy wings at Holy Hound Taproom; $5 sliders at Mudhook Brewing Co., made with Pepper’s Grille pulled pork on York City Pretzel Company rolls; and ended the evening on a sweet note with $5 red velvet cake at Otto’s Kitchen & Cocktails. Drink specials that night included $5 Grape Bombs at White Rose Bar & Grill and $5 martinis, daiquiris, old fashioneds, and Manhattans at Otto’s.

Box Lunch Revue in Cherry Lane The popular Box Lunch Revue concert series

returns to downtown York on Tuesday, May 3. The Central York Middle School and High School Jazz Ensembles will open the season.

Each Tuesday and Thursday, May through August, enjoy free musical entertainment in Downtown Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Cherry Lane courtyard from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Many musical genres are represented, including: jazz, folk, indie, country, classic hits, Celtic, Hawaiian, blues, cigar box guitar, and more. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s schedule includes musicians from throughout Pennsylvania and Maryland, and as far away as Arizona, New Hampshire, and New Jersey. During the entire month of May, York County school bands will be the featured performers.

Many favorites from past seasons will be returning. New performers to the series include Weary Arts Group, Mylea Thompson, Parker James Hooker, Soji, Poorhouse Yard, Mickey Spain (of the internationally-touring group Makem and Spain), and Haley Richardson, who will be accompanied by her brother, Dylan. Haley Richardson, age 13, is an award-winning Irish fiddler. She is the 2015 Junior Fiddler of Dooney, two-time All-Ireland Under 12 champion, four-time All-Ireland place winner, and seven-time Mid-Atlantic Regional fiddle champion. In the event of inclement weather, most performances will be moved indoors to the nearby Central Market House; updates will be shared via social media and by recorded message at 849-2217. Helping to Improve York's Central Market

The 41st

annual Olde York Street Fair will be held in downtown York, in and around Continental Square, on Sunday, May 8, 2016, from 12:30 p.m. to 6 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event.

More than 100 arts and craft vendors will feature handmade gift items for sale. Food vendors will sell traditional American festival food as well as original creations. All food vendors donate a portion of their sales to area non-profit organizations. A Kid’s Fun Block will feature a variety of inflatables, carnival games, face painting, and other entertainment. Ticket sales for the inflatables in the Kid’s Fun Block will support York City Special Events. Entomologist Ryan Bridge (The Bug Man) will once again have his vast collection on display for kids of all ages to see and touch! Four stages near Continental Square will feature live entertainment in a variety of genres, and strolling entertainers will delight festival-goers.

Several tented “rest stop seating” areas will be located throughout the street fair for the convenience of guests. New for 2016: York City Special Events will be partnering with the York County Library System’s Summer Reading Club kickoff. Watch for details on special events that are being planned as part of this celebration, including special dance performances by Illstyle & Peace Productions, the 2013 US Culture Ambassadors picked by the State Department. These dancers have toured Russia, Belarus, and the Ukraine, and the City of York is pleased to have the group at the street fair this year.

The American Red Cross will hold a blood drive in conjunction with the Olde York Street Fair on Sunday, May 8 (11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.), outside the Historical Society Museum in the 200 block of East Market Street. About an hour is all it takes to make a blood donation; in that time, you can help save three lives! To schedule your appointment, please call 800-REDCROSS or visit www.redcross.org and select Donate Blood. Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments take precedence. The Olde York Street Fair runs 12:30 to 6 p.m., so there’s still plenty of time to enjoy all of the day’s events! Spring Forward: A Spectacle of Art, Fashion and Indulgence Friday, May 20 Spring Forward, an annual fundraising gala presented by The Parliament Arts

Organization, is a glamorous celebration of community, emerging artists, and fashion coming together for an evening of spring inspiration. Featuring an open bar, as well as killer food and a dance party, Spring Forward is the event of the spring.

Spring Forward is held at the beautiful Bond Building, downtown Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s newest wedding and events venue. Situated on the cornerstone of Royal Square in the heart of downtown, The Bond is Central PAâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first industrial event space.

Eight area artists are partnering with downtown York retailers to create immersive art installations that incorporate three-dimensional objects and design elements, bringing the art and fashion to life. When you enter the event, you become a part of the living, breathing masterpiece that is Spring Forward. It’s art meets fashion meets party, and it’s a night you won’t soon forget. This year’s Spring Forward gala happens to fall on the blue moon, Friday, May 20. The term has traditionally referred to an “extra” moon, where a year which normally has 12 moons has 13 instead. The “blue moon” reference is applied to the third moon in a season with four moons.

Not only will the “blue moon” theme permeate the event, Blue Moon Brewing Co. will be hosting a fun photo booth and the Blue Moon will be flowing all night long, courtesy of The Beer Ace. Refreshments and catered food will be provided before and after the presentation, courtesy of The JDK Group. All proceeds from this exclusive event will directly benefit The Parliament Arts Organization, which advances social & economic revitalization of York by providing professional development and event programming for creatives and cultural venues. National Small Business Week May 1-7, 2016

This year, National Small Business Week runs from May 1 – 7, with the theme “Dream Big, Start Small.” Much like Small Business Saturday every November, this event shines a spotlight on local businesses like the ones here in downtown York. All Rivers Run to the York Symphony Orchestra Saturday, May 21

As the temperatures rise, cool down with the York Symphony Orchestra’s water-inspired performance, “All Rivers Run to the Sea.” The final show of the 2015-2016 season is a landmark celebration commemorating the 200th anniversary of The York Water Company. This exciting show will feature Ralph Vaughan Williams’ epic Symphony No. 1 “A Sea Symphony” with special appearances by the York Symphony Chorus and outstanding guest soloists.

Thanks to the support of the York community, we have had a hugely successful season celebrating the beauty of nature through music. It’s quite fitting to conclude the season by celebrating York’s heritage with this musical and visual journey down some of the most beautiful rivers in the world.

As this series comes to a close, we are enthusiastically looking ahead to next season which will be unlike any before. Vacant windows in downtown York are getting a makeover and stirring conversation, thanks to a new public art project from The Parliament Arts Organization.

#PopUpYork is a participatory public art project from The Parliament Arts Organization that invites Yorkers to share in shaping our communityâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s future. Yorkers are welcome to stop by these installations and post a photo sharing what they wish the vacant space would become using the hashtag #PopUpYork on social media to let the world know. Through partnering with property owners and artists, The Parliament Arts Organization aims to take over main street vacant store fronts in downtown York with elaborate art installations. Allowing residents to see potential in abandoned spaces, and artists a three-dimensional canvas in the public eye, this project directly serves the residents and artists of downtown York.

History Untapped is Unique Among Brewfests Saturday, June 11, 2016 Agricultural & Industrial Museum

Do you enjoy great beer, great food, and local history? History Untapped is the brewfest for you. The York County Heritage Trust was a pioneer in 1997 when the organizationâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s first Microbrew Fest was held. In the early years, only a few small breweries dotted the South Central Pa. region, and the event was novel in its concept. Over time, this major fundraiser grew in size and popularity as craft brewing overspread the area and beer festivals became commonplace.

The festival’s locale, the Trust’s Agricultural & Industrial Museum, was unique and fit the farming roots of craft brewing. The site’s gritty vibe and outdoor spaces had great appeal, paired with live music and a chance to taste many brews in one evening. During the next decade, event attendance regularly exceeded 1,000 people. But while funds raised were at their peak, the museum and its artifacts started to be at risk. Something needed to change. Desiring to continue the long tradition of the event, organizers retooled and rebranded it in 2014 to stand out from other similar events. Dubbed History Untapped: An Artisan Beer Affair, the new model is designed to offer a more intimate experience with a focus on beer-and-food pairings. Only 400 tickets are sold, providing attendees an opportunity to converse with the brewers and restaurateurs and enjoy more “elbow room.” Each craft beer is paired with a food tasting, putting the spotlight on the complexities of the beers and their best culinary matches. The “arrival” of beer as a capable partner to food is partly due to its flavor variety. Beermakers can experiment with barley, hops, and yeast, as well as spices, fruits, and vegetables, resulting in endless combinations. And like wine pairings, there are many schools of thought. Among them are light dishes with light beers and heavy dishes with heavy beers; sweet brews with salty foods; bubbles with fatty ones, and on and on! Above all, most brewers will agree: drink what you like, and experiment! If you love pale ale, you’ll probably like it with anything you eat. This philosophy is in keeping with the casual spirit of History Untapped; experience York County history in the galleries and outdoor spaces of the museum; taste and enjoy the best offerings of our breweries, restaurants, and caterers; and support the mission of the York County Heritage Trust. A free event for all, July4York kicks off Monday, July 4, at 5:30 p.m. with fired-up grills and the amped up “Family Fun Festival” on the Brooks Robinson Plaza, presented by CGA Law Firm. Saturday, August 27, and Sunday, August 28 Yorkfest is York’s premier summer fine arts festival weekend featuring 100 select artists from all around the country, free family-friendly entertainment and hands-on arts activities, delicious food, and an evening community jazz concert. Yorkfest takes place this year on Saturday, August 27, and Sunday, August 28. Festival Marketplace hours are 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday. All events are free and open to the public. This year’s featured artist is Brenda Wintermyer of York. Brenda’s painting entitled “City Alive” will be featured on all promotional items and merchandise for the festival this year. Festival Highlights: The Yorkfest Juried Art Exhibition will be housed at the Agricultural and Industrial Museum. The public is invited to a reception for art and literary award winners at the museum, located at 217 W. Princess St., on Friday, August 26 (6 to 8 p.m.). The Yorkfest Youth Art Competition will also be displayed at the Agricultural & Industrial Museum. The youth awards ceremony will take place Saturday, August 27, at 2 p.m. One hundred fine artists from around the country will participate in the Festival Marketplace located around the Colonial Courthouse Complex, and along Pershing Avenue and the Rail Trail from Market to Princess Streets. Prime Art Supply Company is organizing this yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s ChalkWalk along the 100 block of West Market Street. New this year will be a Family category. Also new this year: The Creative York Family Pavilion will feature a platform stage with magic shows, storytelling, balloon twisting, face painting, and interactive community art projects. Live music can be enjoyed both Saturday and Sunday in various locations around the grounds and inside of the Agricultural and Industrial Museum. The York County Heritage Trust is planning several activities in and around the Colonial Court House Complex for both days, including its gift shop and walking tours of the Murals of York and the Colonial Court House, plus talks and demonstrations. The Yorkfest Poetry Spoken Here tent will provide an area for dynamic poets from York and surrounding areas to read in an open tent throughout the weekend. The City of York will again offer a FREE community jazz concert in the Capitol Theatre on Saturday night, August 27. Doors will open at 5 p.m. and no tickets are required.
