triannual downtown guide. Within these pages you’ll find information about upcoming special events, as well as a full guide to dining, shopping and attractions in our downtown.

Winter in downtown York is not a time for hibernation. From Restaurant Week York (February 20-27) to the York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade (March 12) to Go Green in the City (April 23), there’s no reason to spend your winter curled up at home. Plus, this is a very big year for downtown York: 2016 marks the 275th Anniversary of the laying out of our town. Look for special events all year long to commemorate this important birthday. New Year countdown is not enough. York starts ringing in the New Year at 6pm, at the first of three countdown events that will welcome 2016. Start your New Year’s Eve festivities at Mudhook Brewing Company (34 N. Cherry Lane), where they bring old world flair to the holiday by celebrating Belgian-style. The event marks the release of their Belgian Dubbel brew, a brown ale with “understated bitterness, fairly heavy body and pronounced fruitiness with cereal character,” according to Mudhook owner Jeff Lau. Partygoers can also dine on traditional Belgian fare like Belgian Stoofvlees (stew) and freshly made Belgian Waffles. At 6pm—midnight in Brussels—the crowd moves outside to Cherry Lane to watch the infamous Pint Drop. “Each city has its own traditions of dropping a rose, or bologna (Lebanon) to kick off the New Year,” says Lau. “Since we’re a brewing company, we’ll be dropping a pint.” For more information on the Belgian New Year celebration, follow Mudhook’s Facebook Page at www.facebook.com/ mudhookbrewing. If you’re looking for a New Year’s Eve event to accommodate all ages, bring your little ones to Central Market (34 W. Philadelphia Street) for a children’s New Year’s Eve party from 6-8pm. Enjoy complimentary hats and noisemakers for youngsters, family-friendly entertainment, inflatables, photo backdrops and props, glitter tattoos, face painting and a balloon drop countdown at 8pm. Of course, at midnight you don’t want to miss the traditional white rose drop in Continental Square. The crowd begins to assemble around 11:30pm to count down the last few seconds of 2015 and watch the brightly-lit white rose make its descent down the side of the former Citizens Bank building on the northeast corner of Continental Square. Once the white rose drops, a dazzling fireworks display lights up the sky and welcomes 2016 with a bang, literally.

It’s important to note that Market Street from Beaver to Duke and George Street from Philadelphia to King will be closed from 11pm on December 31 until approximately 1am on January 1. Happy 275th Birthday, York!

York is celebrating a big milestone this

year: 2016 marks the 275th Anniversary of the laying out of York as a city. York City was first laid out in 1741 by Thomas Cookson, and the first lots were offered for sale. 23 were promptly purchased in what became the first town west of the Susquehanna River: York Town.

When the delegates of the Second Continental Congress—the group who signed the Declaration of Independence in 1776—had to flee Philadelphia under impending British Invasion, they made their way to the then-remote York Town in 1777. Here, some of America’s Most Wanted, like John Hancock, Samuel Adams, John Adams, and Thomas Paine met and signed the Articles of Confederation, the first version of the Constitution, on November 15, 1777. Because of this, many locals claim that York is actually the first capitol of the United States. All throughout 2016, special events will mark this momentous occasion and commemorate York’s place in history and our city’s amazing accomplishments and bright future. Look for historic walking tours and living history events, an educational Speaker Series, city-wide celebrations and an enlightening experience on Continental Square.

York at 275 Years â&#x20AC;&#x201C; A New Crossroads by Terrence Dutchie Downs

You stand where synergy meets the roadway, and

has for 275 years. The location? Downtown Yorkâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Continental Square. The intersection where celebrations, tributes and traffic have made alive the cross hairs of South Central Pennsylvania. Laid out in 1741 by the team of Stevenson and Spangler, it veins out from this axis. In November 1777, Delegates fleeing Philadelphia spent one day in Lancaster, seeking the riparian barrier the means to keep focused on hammering out the founding rules of a Democracy. Nine months after, The Court House belfry pealed with news of success. York Town was on the map. Successes and notoriety kept York in the limelight since. Wars, riots, inventions, and plans to help a country in conflict all were realized within steps of this axis spot. Two major highways crisscrossed at this location. Conestoga wagons gave way to carriages, soon trolleys, then automobiles and motorcycles. York is a town on the move.

125 years ago York kept a late Federal presence to its square’s buildings. Innovation by visionaries of that point forward changed it to a town – then a City with European faceted architecture. Recanting its agrarian basis to a larger place, the market sheds made way for an open Square. The regions about the plat where Hartley, Smith, McClean soon would yield Lewis Miller, Jonanthan Jessop, Philip Albright Small and Tom Wolf on the same spot. The cobbled paths of stone and dirt streets gave way to brick roads and concrete walks.

Centre Square rebranded for York’s 1927 celebration of Continental Congress 150th Anniversary. The square was in attire of a Grand Festival, garlands, paintings, illumined and bunted to every corner. And gleaming proudly was a Bank on the northeast corner, exuding pride of York’s wealth and prosperity. The roads well-traveled lead to York – gearing for a new Epiphany.

The temperature was a crisp

22 degrees for the inaugural FestivICE in January 2015. Everywhere you looked, folks were sporting hot pink yeti sunglasses, an early entry giveaway at the Brooks Robinson Plaza gates. Despite the cold, kids and parents watched in awe as the sunshine beamed through the shavings shooting from the chainsaws that were sculpting the frozen statues on the plaza.

FestivICE is York’s annual ice festival and it’s coming back to downtown on January 16th, 11am-4pm, for its second round. Produced by Eventive—the event production division of the York Revolution—and presented by York Traditions Bank, FestivICE is part of an initiative by the two organizations to build on family-fun traditions in York County and downtown York. The festival attracted over 1000 attendees in 2015 and Eventive looks to push the cold-defying audience to even greater numbers this winter. When you go, expect to see 6,000 pounds of ice being sculpted right in front of your eyes by DiMartino Ice Company. In addition to the frozen spectacle, you’ll find food trucks, craft beer, a bonfire for keeping warm and cooking s’mores, music, rides and a slew of other good times. Last year’s event hosted the “Pre-Plunge Party,” which was a precursor to the Polar Plunge, the major fundraising event of the Special Olympics. As FestivICE gains popularity, the goal of organizers is to expand the festival beyond the stadium gates and into the downtown community. Adam Nugent, Director of Eventive, says, “FestivICE is all about being outdoors and defying winter weather. It’s an extension of the holidays with more food and more fun. We’re getting together with family and friends to shake off cabin fever and laugh at the cold!”

The answers to those questions will be revealed in a very special upcoming exhibit. “My York City,” presented by York Traditions Bank, will feature works of all mediums and genres by York area artists in a display at Marketview Arts Gallery Hall in downtown York, February 4-29, illustrating each artist’s vision of “their York.” What “My York City” means and how it is interpreted is left completely to the artist, opening a dialogue between the artists and the larger community on what defines our downtown.

The show will close on February 27. Artist lectures, literary readings and performances are also planned during the month-long exhibit to showcase literary and performing arts pieces based on the “My York City” theme with the community. The exhibit will also be part of the slate of events planned throughout 2016 to commemorate York’s 275th Anniversary. eyes will be smiling on downtown York as the 33rd Annual York Saint Patrickâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Day Parade steps off at 1 pm on Saturday, March 12, from Market and Penn Streets, and proceeds east on Market to Duke Street. Approximately 100 entries are expected to take part in this fun annual celebration of Celtic heritage, including

bands, Irish dance groups, floats, antique and decorated vehicles, clowns, individuals and family groups, non-profit organizations, media entries, and more. Prizes totaling $2,100 are awarded in several categories, so start thinking about your parade entry if you would like to participate.

Although the parade is the main attraction of the day, spectators are encouraged to head downtown early on March 12 for a variety of Irish dance and musical entertainment and merchant promotions in several locations. Fair Interpreting will again provide sign language interpreting services at Continental Square during the parade, so that the Deaf and Hard of Hearing Community near Continental Square will be able to enjoy commentary on entries as they pass the reviewing stand. The York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade draws an estimated 10,000 people downtown each year, and provides a huge boost for downtown merchants. It’s a great day for the Irish and for downtown York. The parade is organized by the York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade Committee, Inc., an all-volunteer, not-for-profit organization; 2016 will be the 18th year this group has organized the parade, which has grown dramatically since the City of York relinquished responsibility of the event in January 1999. A Delicious Way to Support the Parade: “There’s Guinness In It” back by popular demand The York Saint Patrick’s Day Parade’s delicious fundraiser, “There’s Guinness In It,” featuring a dozen area restaurants and caterers creating a menu item containing Guinness, will take place 5:30-8pm on Thursday, March 3, at Central Market House, 34 W. Philadelphia Street in downtown York. Guests will be able to sample a variety of sweet and savory Guinness-inspired delicacies as they roam through Central Market. Past dishes have included stews, chili, mussels, sausage, barbecue, chicken, and fish, as well as brownies, cupcakes, hot chocolate, ice cream and other tasty treats. Tickets are $25 each and include a sampling from each participating restaurant/caterer, samples of Guinness products, and water from The York Water Company. rockers, those who belt out tunes with hairbrush in hand: ever wonder what it would be like to sing on the Strand stage in front of screaming fans? Now’s your chance! Show downtown what you’ve got at the 2nd annual YorVoice event on March 18th from 7:30pm9:30pm at the Strand-Capitol Performing Arts Center at 50 North George Street in York. The first-ever YorVoice attracted the top singing talent in the area to compete in a friendly music showcase, with a range of performers from choirs to a capella groups, solo acts to high school garage bands. “The talent last year was amazing,” says Kelley Gibson, Cultural Alliance event organizer. “We had live bands and singers from all ages and backgrounds performing everything from opera to R&B. All the performances just blew us away. We’re so excited to see the crop of talent that comes forward this year.” In addition to performing for the crowd in the Strand-Capitol, a celebrity panel of judges is on hand to offer constructive feedback to the performers and select the YorVoice Champion. Judges on the celebrity panel include DaNica Shirey, York County singer and recent top 8 finisher in Season 7 of the NBC reality singing competition series “The Voice”; international touring musician and owner of Assorted Studios production/ recording company, Ralph Washington; Strand-Capitol General Manager Anne Sturm; Ashley May, editor of Flipside PA; and Joe Devoy, owner of Tellus360 in Lancaster. But the judges don’t have all the say; the public will vote for their favorite performer through the People’s Choice award, given to the contestant with the most online and in-person votes at the event, at $1 per vote. Last year’s competition was fierce, with online votes coming in until the last minute. PAPERHEART, a team of Glatfelter Paper employees, was the 2015 People’s Choice winner. “We had a blast with the event and the internal camaraderie it generated,” said Bill Yanavitch, Senior Vice President of Glatfelter. In between contestants, our celebrity Emcee Chris Garrett of FOX43 and our house funk band Boompop Coalition make sure to keep the fun going. “You never know what Chris and Boompop are going to do next,” says organizer Kelley Gibson. York has earned a reputation as a live music

destination and has gained prominence in the national music community over the last several years. The newest ticket in town, Kable House Presents, showcases up-and-coming national touring acts in an intimate, listening-room environment at York’s historic Central Market.

Kable House Presents is an independent, volunteer-driven initiative. The organizers rent out the space at Central Market about once a month to host the shows. Tickets are available to the public at an accessible price point ($10-15), and food and beverages are available for purchase during the shows from featured Central Market vendors.

The series began with generous support from the community, including a $10,000 Creative Impact Award from the Cultural Alliance of York County, private contributions, and a Kickstarter campaign. That funding covered the expenses for the first season of concerts, and ticket revenue and additional contributions from the community keep the series going. Kable House Presents spans a variety of genres and styles. In their first season, they featured acts like Strand of Oaks, Jessica Lea Mayfield, Grammy winner Dom Flemons, Lydia Loveless, and Israel Nash, as well as a sold-out show with the 10-piece Houston soul band The Suffers. Concertgoers can make a night of it in downtown York. The idea of pairing unexpected menu items with craft beer was born in 2012, when Wolfgang Candy Company and Gavin Advertising held the first-ever Sweetest Pint Beer and Chocolate Pub Crawl event to benefit Downtown Inc.
