PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

LIVE FROM NASHVILLE! Summer is here and it is time to confirm your plans to attend the 118th NHLA Convention. The 2015 NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase will be held at the Omni Hotel Downtown Nashville, TN October 7 – 9. With the current challenging market environment, this year’s convention is a “don’t miss” opportunity to gauge the direction of the industry and meet suppliers, customers and vendors. The convention will include two keynote speakers, seven educational seminars and more than 80 exhibits. In addition, there will be several social networking events including a golf tournament benefiting the Hardwood Forest Foundation and an opportunity to mingle with directors from the American Hardwood Export Council (AHEC) who will be in attendance. The Omni is the perfect venue; I am convinced that convention hotels need a central watering hole and places where members can converse with suppliers and customers. The Downtown Omni is centrally located right in the thick of the Nashville music scene. It has a huge lobby area and Barlines, the hotel’s in house bar featuring live music every night. If you want to venture out, I encourage you to go to “Robert’s Western World” for some of the best music in town and ask for a fried bologna sandwich. It is to die for! On a more serious note, this year there will be two dynamic speakers. On Thursday, former NFL star and Dave Ramsey speaker Chris Hogan will speak to us about business, leadership and personal finance. As a primary producer of Red Oak, I could use some of that advice right now! On Friday, Daniel Pink will address convention attendees. Daniel Pink’s most recent book To Sell Is Human and his TED talk on the science of motivation is one of the 20 most watched TED talks of all time. Both of these speakers will allow us to sharpen our minds and offer valuable information that will help us in our personal and professional lives. The educational seminars are another exciting attraction for this year’s convention. Members will have the opportunity to attend seminars on a range of topics including; Doing Business in China with Marco Chan; Hardwood Industry Update presented by the Hardwood Market Report and Forestry Industry Issues Update moderated by Dana Cole just to name a few. Each of these seminars will have “take home” value for you, your team and your business.

The convention offers us the ability to visit with the vendors that support our business with services, software and equipment.

The convention offers us the ability to visit with the vendors that support our business with services, software and equipment. In one location, we can speak to multiple people that can influence our success. As of this writing, the Exhibit Showcase is almost sold out. Be sure to visit these industry partners while at the Omni. In closing, I want to thank each of our sponsors for contributing to this year’s convention. Without their support the global gathering of the hardwood community would not be possible. I also want to encourage every member and industry friend to come to Nashville in October. With an expected attendance of more than 900 industry professionals, the opportunities are huge! Thanks again for the privilege of serving as your President!

Pem Jenkins, NHLA President Turn Bull Lumber Company

2015 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

CHRIS HOGAN Opening Session Keynote Speaker Thursday, October 8 – 8am Legends Ballroom Sponsored by Rossi Group Chris Hogan might have been the most unlikely person to wind up working as a financial speaker. Why? Years ago, Chris was an All-American college football player who pushed future NFL players all over the field—far removed from the world of helping others find Financial Peace. For Chris, the path from football to where he is today was a long, but meaningful, journey. While he was a vice president of a well-respected company, helping clients manage all phases of their businesses, he realized how so many families, marriages and children were being affected by money issues. He felt powerless as he sat behind his desk and watched his clients throw away their financial futures. Chris knew things needed to change. That’s when he met Dave Ramsey, and his career found a new direction. Today, he helps spread Dave’s message of financial hope to audiences everywhere. An engaging and humorous speaker, Chris is an expert on subjects like mortgages, healthcare and investing. To promote financial education, he speaks at colleges and businesses, and conducts on-site training sessions at companies. Chris also works with high-profile clients, such as athletes, entertainers and businessmen, to help them develop a financial strategy to protect their wealth and secure their future. facebook.com/chrishogan360 @chrishogan360

2015 KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

DANIEL PINK Keynote Speaker Friday, October 9 – 8:30am Legends Ballroom Sponsored by Pennsylvania & Indiana Lumbermens Mutual Insurance Companies One of the world’s leading business minds, Daniel Pink’s forward-thinking ideas and blockbuster books are reshaping how organizations approach innovation, motivation and talent. Like it or not, we’re all in sales now. One in 9 American workers now earns a living by trying to get someone else to make a purchase. But as Daniel Pink shows in his latest book, To Sell Is Human, the other 8 in 9 are spending huge portions of their days in “non-sales selling”— convincing, persuading and influencing others. A cluster of economic forces has changed sales more in the last 10 years than it changed in the previous 100, and made the skeezy, sleazy, usedcar style of motivating others to action a relic of the past. Emerging in its place is a new approach built on three fundamentally human qualities and three essential skills. As he did in his longrunning New York Times best sellers Drive and A Whole New Mind, Pink lays out the science for his counterintuitive insights, offering vivid studies and tools to make organizations more effective. Pink’s previous books have been translated into 33 languages and have sold well over one million copies in the U.S. alone. His TED talk on the science of motivation is one of the 20 mostwatched TED talks of all time. In 2011, Harvard Business Review and Thinkers50 named him one of the top 30 business thinkers in the world. His articles appear in The New York Times, Harvard Business Review and Wired. He advises start-ups and Fortune 100 companies on talent, engagement and innovation. facebook.com/danielpink @danielpink

PROMOTING THE ENVIRONMENTAL CREDENTIALS OF AMERICAN HARDWOODS by AHEC Executive Director Michael Snow and AHEC Sustainability Consultant Rupert Oliver of Forest Industries Intelligence Ltd. In this session AHEC Executive Director Michael Snow and AHEC Sustainability Consultant Rupert Oliver of Forest Industries Intelligence Ltd. will discuss the myriad of environmental issues facing the industry, and why we should look at these developments as opportunities rather than threats. Over the past several years AHEC has developed powerful tools such as an illegal logging risk assessment and a full Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) on American hardwood lumber to assist the industry in communicating our strong environmental credentials. The culmination of these efforts is AHEC’s newly-released American Hardwood Environmental Profile (AHEP), an environmental profiling “tool” that will combine legality information (EU Timber Regulation, Lacey requirement), sustainability data from the US Forest Service and LCA impacts from the AHEC research. The AHEP makes it possible to produce, at the push of a button, a two-page profile specific to every container of US hardwood exported.

You will be taken through a checklist of items that are important to every estate and business succession plan. You will learn what you should be doing now to prepare for successful business and estate secession. Larry Oxenham Larry is an expert in the areas of tax reduction, lawsuit protections, and estate planning and has authored several publications on the subject including Protect Your Assets and The Asset Protection Bible. Friday October 9 2-3:30pm

INTERNATIONAL MARKETS SESSION by the American Hardwood Export Council Following a statistical analysis of US hardwood exports by AHEC Executive Director Mike Snow, this session will feature a panel of AHEC overseas directors and consultants to discuss the latest export market trends behind those numbers as well answer your questions on the opportunities and threats facing our industry in overseas markets. The panel will feature AHEC directors David Venables (Europe); John Chan (Greater China and Southeast Asia); Luis Zertuche (Mexico and Latin America); Takahiro Tsuji (Japan); and Rod Wiles (India, Middle East and Oceania). John Chan joined the American Hardwood Export Council as Director of its Southeast Asia and Greater China Office when the regional office was established in Hong Kong in 1992. He is responsible for developing marketing strategies and programs for the promotion of American hardwood in the region covering China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam. A science graduate from the University of British Columbia, Canada, John has accumulated over 30 years of working experience in forest products, of which more than 20 years were devoted to the promotion of American hardwood products. Takahiro Tsuji joined the American Hardwood Export Council as Director of its Osaka, Japan office in 1992. He has organized Hang Tag Promotion, Eco-Furniture Contests, Eco-Interior Project and Architect Seminars, etc. to introduce the effective usage of American hardwood to Japanese endusers since 2000. And he has been visiting Japanese furniture & interior materials manufacturers, architects, designers and lumber importers individually for providing the current information of American hardwoods to them and has been trying to find out some possibility of piggyback promotions of American hardwoods with them. Since 2006 he had been negotiating with the Forestry Agency of the Japanese Government about the legality of American hardwood and the American Hardwood Responsible Procurement Policy (AHEC RPP) has been admitted as one of legality officially in Japan in 2009. Now, AHEC is the only authorized overseas association to be able to issue the legality under Green Procurement Law in Japan. He was born in Osaka in 1957 and graduated from Kuwansei Gakuin University in Nishiomiya, Hygo in 1981.
