PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
NASHVILLE IS THE PLACE TO BE It’s that time of year again . . . NHLA is gearing up for another successful annual convention and exhibition. NHLA’s Convention staff have been hard at work these past months to create an unparalleled networking event that will be well worth your time and money. Consider that our 2017 Convention and Exhibit Showcase will be the largest in over ten years. And of course, Nashville Tennessee is not a bad city to visit in October. It is one of the greatest entertainment cities in the world! Since becoming the NHLA President, some members have shared with me that the Convention is becoming “too expensive.” While I recognize that attendance of both your time and money requires an investment, I would suggest that this analysis is a bit short sighted. My response is always, how can you afford NOT to attend? Where else can you meet the industry leaders that have the potential to make a difference in your company’s success, or learn how to differentiate your business by being exposed to the latest technologies, or take advantage of new sales opportunities? And when you consider your attendance at NHLA is the cheapest, and most interactive form of advertising available, the convention provides a solid return on your registration investment. HERE ARE FIVE REASONS WHY I NEVER MISS AN NHLA CONVENTION: 1. Create global connections: NHLA brings the leaders of the global hard wood industry right to our doorstep. This year we expect over 1,100 attendees from 14 countries who are ready to do business. These are the people you need to connect with to make your business better. 2. Stay ahead of trends: NHLA’s educational sessions and exhibits will expose you to new trends, products and resources that are relevant to your needs today and tomorrow. Learn the latest on new technologies, emerging markets and whether your company is ahead or behind the curve.
Finally, our speaker lineup this year was developed based on your response to the NHLA member survey. You told us “what is keeping you up at night, and we responded,” with speakers like John Foley and Eric Chester sharing their insight on motivating teams, and motivating our emerging workforce. Michael Snow of AHEC will be back speaking about emerging global opportunities, and Tom Morrison will present his views on what controls your success in today’s marketplace. Hope to see you in Nashville.
3. The Exhibit Showcase: There is no experience like walking a crowded exhibit hall filled with both potential customers and competitors. It is really hard to put a dollar value on the information you will acquire that can help you evaluate both your businesses’ strengths and weakness and of course, connect with new customers. 4. Meet and greet the best and the brightest. The NHLA Convention offers more “meet and greet “opportunities than just the exhibit hall. In addition to business leads you can acquire by walking the show floor, networking opportu- nities are around every corner. Some of my best business deals started with contacts made at NHLA receptions or educational sessions. With the right strategies and insight, such leads can lead to strategic partnerships and even more importantly, new customers. Where else can you get those types of business returns in just two short days?
Brent Stief, NHLA President Huron Forest Products
5. Renew old partnerships: I have also found that NHLA has provided me with the opportunity to renew old contacts and partnerships. I can’t tell you how many times over the years I have seen people we used to deal with and think, “I need to try again with that guy.” 6

JOHN FOLEY
Former Blue Angels Pilot and Motivational Speaker John Foley has been recognized as one of the top 10 most in demand speakers. John has spoken to some of the Highest Performing organizations such as Microsoft, Hitachi, Intel, Cisco, Mercedez-Benz, BMW and many more. He is a former lead solo pilot of the Blue Angels, a Sloan Fellow at Stanford School of Business, a gratitude guru and an expert in the how of High Performance teams. His exciting, rare journey inspires awe, triggering audiences to take action and rethink what they believe is possible. John employs those intense realities as a metaphor to motivate teams and individuals to reach for their highest potential while empowering organizations to sustain excellence under dynamic change. John’s presentations are marked by three overriding traits. • A contagious attitude of thankfulness that he calls Glad To Be Here®. • An energizing delivery that inspires High Performance with a purpose larger than self. • A practical model for living out his message that works in other organizations as well as within the Blue Angels. John consistently performed in an extreme, highstakes environment, flying at speeds of more than 500 miles per hour and in formations as close as 18 inches apart. To survive in those circumstances, he relied on a culture of high trust and leadership that turns inherently unforgiving flight into extraordinary experiences. He employs those intense realities as a metaphor to motivate teams to reach for their highest potential and empower organizations to sustain excellence under dynamic change.

He holds master's degrees in business management and international policy, from Stanford; and in strategic studies, from the Naval War College.

FAMILY BUSINESS RELATIONS SEMINAR by Deb Houden, Ph.D. Businesses with family ownership tend to out-perform businesses that are not family owned. However, owning and working with family members bring unique challenges that can hurt the business and the family. Please join me at the National Convention in October when I talk about relationships in the family business. Three of the factors that affect families in business the most are succession planning, conflict management and next generation preparation. Each one of these topics is truly about relationships—whether you are focusing on just the business, the family or a healthy combination of each. Each month leading up to the convention, I will discuss certain topics related to my convention talk: planning early for transition, communication, next generation preparation and finally, letting go. Deb Houden Deb Houden is a senior consultant with The Family Business Consulting Group, she specializes in helping family-owned businesses with family communication, transition and next generation development by providing resources, tools and knowledge that are needed to navigate their specific issues. Deb has worked with numerous families on developing effective communication and conflict resolution skills, developing family meetings, beginning stages of board development, and working with next generational members of family firms (including adolescents). She is adept at developing processes that help families go through changes within the business and family systems. She is a regular presenter to industry groups, family business centers, and individual company retreats on topics including the next generation and succession, communication and conflict resolution, and perceptions of fairness.

WHAT'S YOUR UBER by Tom Morrison The future is coming at every industry faster than ever. 2020 is right around the corner and the #1 fear of most C-suite executives is the "UBERIZATION" of their business model. No industry is exempt from the "uberization" impact. Do your members know what their UBER is? They better or they will be left behind. In a recent study by IBM, senior executives of thousands of companies stated that their #1 fear for the future was the "Uberization" of their industry or marketplace. This energetic and informative session will help provide the keys in researching and determining what future disruption is coming your way. 3-dynamic forces are changing every industry as it has the taxi, real estate, publishing and music industries. No industry is exempt from uberization. Over the last 5 years, disruption has transformed their industries putting the association and their members at risk for competing. The question is . . . Do you know what may be lurking your way that is going to create havoc in your industry. Tom Morrison will share 4 visuals every executive should be looking at with future business planning, the 3 dynamic forces causing disruption, the 3 reasons why disruption is happening and the 6 places it occurs. This is a must see keynote.

Dana Cole Dana Cole, a native of Michigan, which is home to more than 250 hardwood businesses, began her career working for Governor John Engler as a policy advisor. She then spent eight years with the Michigan Economic Development Corporation in several roles where she promoted small and large businesses in the state, and successfully negotiated regulatory disputes. MANSIONS OF THE SOUTH TOUR: BELLE MEADE PLANTATION Thursday, October 26 10am-2:30pm Sponsored by Turn Bull Lumber Co.
The South’s most rewarding showplace, Belle Meade Plantation, is known as the “Queen of the Tennessee Plantations.” The fully restored Greek Revival mansion was completed in 1853 and the grounds include a large carriage house, stable, log cabin, winery, and several other original buildings. Belmont Mansion was the summer home of Adelicia Acklen, an extraordinary woman who married a then unheard-of three times. Adelicia was reputed to be the wealthiest woman in the United States in the midnineteenth century. An ornate Italianate design, the home features many of the original furnishings and includes marble fountains, cast-iron gazebos, and statuary that are still standing as evidence of ornate, formal gardens. Discover Belle Meade Plantation at www.bellemeade.com. Cost to attend this event is $65.00 per person. • Includes admission, wine tasting at Belle Meade Plantation’s winery, round trip transportation, and a southern lunch.
