Opening Session Keynote Speaker Wednesday, October 3 at 8am Grand Ballroom on Lower Concourse Level

PAUL MOYA Harvard Multigenerational Expert Paul Moya is best known for his role as CEO of Millennial Labs—a global consulting firm focused on segmentation marketing and generational behavior. His discoveries have impacted leaders in audiences as large as 54,000 and have helped brands such as Visa, Microsoft, General Motors, and the Department of Defense to interpret and act on human behavior in the workplace, marketplace, and voting booth. As a lifelong entrepreneur and former Student Government Association President at Harvard, Paul knows first-hand the pressures of growing and leading operations at large scales while engaging and retaining Millennial employees, consumers, and voters during every step of the way. Nicknamed the ‘Harvard Cowboy’ by clients and friends, Paul blends Harvard Strategy with Cowboy Practicality to present viable solutions that deliver quantifiable results. His research takes insight from psychology, neuroscience, behavioral economics, and plain old-fashioned ‘cowboy wisdom’ to close the gap between the big-data strategies he gained at Harvard and the “no fluff solutions” he mastered atop a Chestnut horse named ‘Frisky.’

THE KEYS TO MULTI-GENERATIONAL FAMILY OWNERSHIP: STRONG ROOTS BUILD A LASTING LEGACY by Josh Baron While survival is an issue for any type of company, it is of particular concern to most family businesses. Their companies are not just sources of wealth, but also of identity, pride, and legacy. They take seriously the impact that they have on employees, customers, and communities. As a result, the cost of failure is especially high. Of course, there is no sure-fire way to guarantee that a family business will endure across generations. However, experience working with hundreds of family businesses across the globe suggests that the most common pitfalls to long-term survival can be avoided by working through a similar set of issues. There is no one-size-fits-all answer, but instead a common set of questions that can best position family businesses to last for the long-term. In this session, Josh Baron will share five key tools that every family business can use to help set the stage for multi-generational success. The session will combine an overview of the tools with a panel discussion where family business leaders share their experiences in applying them. In addition, participants will have the opportunity to complete a self-assessment survey so that they can leave the session with an identification of the priorities for their own family business. Josh Baron is a co-founder and Partner at BanyanGlobal. For the last decade, he has worked closely with families who own assets together, such as operating companies, family foundations, and family offices. He helps these families to define their purpose as owners and to establish the structures, strategies, and skills they need to accomplish their goals. Josh is also an Adjunct Professor at Columbia Business School, where he teaches a class called “Managing Conflict in Family Business. Before Banyan, Josh worked at Bain & Company, The Bridgespan Group, and a firm he co-founded that advised family philanthropists. Josh has written extensively for Harvard Business Review, and also written for The Huffington Post, Trust & Estates Magazine, and Family Business Magazine. A graduate of The University of Pennsylvania, Josh received a BS in Economics from the Wharton School of Business and a BA in International Relations with Honors. He also holds a Masters with Distinction in International Relations from the University of Cambridge and a Masters and Ph.D. in Political Science from Columbia University.

From the log yard to the shipyard, Anchorseal® is your first and best choice for log protection.

DISCUSSION ON HARDWOOD CLT by Andrew Waugh Andrew Waugh is a founding director of Waugh Thistleton Architects, a world leading architecture practice in the use of engineered timber. Over the last 20 years of practice Andrew has designed a number of award winning schemes from cinemas to synagogues, social housing to shopping centres. A dedicated advocate of low carbon construction Andrew encourages clients to look at the feasibility of new technologies and innovative methods of construction. He was responsible for the design of the pioneering Stadhaus, the first tall urban housing project to be constructed entirely from pre- fabricated solid timber. Andrew was awarded the RIBA President’s Medal for Research for this project in 2010. Waugh Thistleton Architects recently won the World Architecture Festival Best Completed Religious Building award for their design of Bushey Cemetery in north London. The congregation halls, formed of rammed earth, were commended for their sensitivity to the surrounding environment and the ceremony and tradition of the Jewish faith. YIELD ANALYSIS PROGRAM STUDY by NHLA Chief Inspector Dana Spessert Today’s hardwood supply chain has to cope with a variety of business challenges on a domestic and global level. Availability of labor has reached record lows. Competition for diminishing natural resources has increased and margins have decreased. Today’s sawmill owners are in search of new approaches to increase the effectiveness of their mills. These pressures highlight the need to ensure hardwood mills are operating at optimum efficiency in all aspects of their operations. NHLA has recently introduced a new members’ only value designed exclusively for sawmill owners – the NHLA Yield Analysis and Productivity Study. The Study, conducted by NHLA experts in quality control and sawmill management, represents a customized approach to providing sawmillers with the tools they need remain competitive in our ever-changing and increasingly challenging marketplace. In this session, NHLA’s Chief Inspector will provide an overview of the Study Components including: • The importance of ongoing data collection and analysis in optimizing mill performance • Steps in creating a production baseline to ensure continuous improvement • How to recover lost profits due to over-trimming • The ROI of identifying areas for increased yield and enhanced gain • The need to identify the profit potential associated with different types of logs and species

HOW TO TELL YOUR STORY by Andy Goodman Since we first began talking to each other, telling stories has been a powerful way to capture attention, engage an audience, and motivate them to act. As we learn more about how our minds work, we’re also discovering that stories are intrinsic to decision-making, shape our view of the world, and guide our actions every day. In his Thursday morning keynote address, “Telling Our Stories,” Andy Goodman will explain why storytelling remains the single most powerful communication tool you possess, and he will offer specific ways your organization can use stories to advance your mission. After his keynote, Andy will also facilitate a ninety-minute workshop for attendees who want to go deeper into the craft of storytelling, and he will also offer opportunities to develop and share a story about your organization. (Attendees interested in attending this workshop must register in advance.)

FOREST INDUSTRY CAPITAL INVESTMENTS AND THE MARKET IMPLICATIONS FOR HARDWOOD LOGS by Brooks Mendall This session ties capital investment trends in North America’s forest industry to the dynamics of hardwood log markets. The implications for business strategy and investment differ by region in the US South, North, Pacific Northwest and Canada. Questions addressed in this session include: • How do forest supplies affect current and expected forest industry capital investments in manufacturing? • How do trends in pulp and paper capacity by region affect the ability to move manufacturing residuals? • What priorities and constraints influence the business strategies and financing options for firms considering new investments? • What else must firms consider when navigating hardwood log markets as compared to softwood log markets? Dr. Brooks Mendell is President and CEO at Forisk, where he leads the firm’s research program. Founded by Dr. Mendell in 2004, Forisk publishes the Forisk Research Quarterly, which provides market analysis, operations research and timber forecasts to senior management and investors in North America’s forest products industry and timberland investing sectors. Dr. Mendell is an internationally recognized business advisor, researcher, and speaker in the fields of forest business, timberland investing, wood bioenergy and business communications. He has broad domestic and international experience supporting small businesses, Fortune 500 corporations and public organizations. His industry experience includes roles in harvest operations, wood procurement, management consulting, and academia. A Fulbright Scholar, his forestry-related books include “Loving Trees is Not Enough”, “Forest Finance Simplified”, and “Aunt Fanny Learns Forestry: Managing Timberland as an Investment." Dr. Mendell earned BS and MS degrees at M.I.T., an MBA at the University of California at Berkeley, and a PhD in Forest Finance at UGA.
