PRESIDENT'S MESSAGE

THE NHLA CONVENTION: THE GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH

I

n good times or bad, there is no better place to be than at the NHLA Annual Convention and Exhibit Showcase on October 2-4 in New Orleans, Louisiana. This year, NHLA is proud to announce the Rossi Group as the Premier Sponsor. Our thanks go out to Ted Rossi for his continued support of NHLA.

New Orleans is a city that is world-renowned for its distinct music, amazing Creole cuisine, southern hospitality, Mardi Gras and other celebrations and festivals. After the last several months, I believe we all deserve a little of New Orleans’s favorite slogan . . . Laissez les bons temps rouler. LET THE GOOD TIMES ROLL! By all accounts, New Orleans is turning out to be a great show. Registration is ahead of last year, and our educational sessions have been tailored to meet your needs in this complicated world we find ourselves in today. Whatever the current business climate, NHLA is always focused on providing value that helps make your business better. That philosophy translates into how we plan our convention. It all begins and ends with three days of networking opportunities. Whether you are an exhibitor or attendee, in search of new buyers or sellers, absolutely nothing can compete with in-person conversations when it comes to making a business deal. And whether you are a large corporation or a small family run business, the NHLA exhibit floor and other networking opportunities level the playing field for all involved. Everyone has access to the same attendees. It’s up to you to make the connections that count. This year we have the biggest exhibit hall in NHLA history. And, we already have a wider variety of new exhibitors signed up than in the past. Our show is all about networking, so more events are being held in the exhibit hall as well, including the Thursday night networking reception, and our first ever exhibit hall Learning Lounge. In addition to our Keynote Speaker, Archie Manning, our educational sessions are designed with your current business needs in mind. You will have the choice of attending sessions on

the industry’s collaborative efforts to promote American hardwoods, workshops on sales, leadership, and market trends – and more are still in the planning stages. Finally, my sincere thanks goes out to the NHLA Convention Committee, including its Chair Garner Robinson, for their commitment to ensuring the New Orleans Convention will provide a return on your investment. We also have some important association business to attend to at the meeting – a vote on a revision to the NHLA Bylaws, and the election of new NHLA Board members. Our Bylaws Task Force, led by Brent Stief, has been working for over a year to review and update our bylaws. First on the agenda will be a proposed revision that would allow electronic or paper ballots when voting for bylaws changes. The revision is modeled after the current Rules voting process. If this amendment passes, there are several other proposed bylaws changes that will be sent for member review and vote. Many of you have heard me credit NHLA’s Inspector Training School for giving me the skills that defined my career path. While the School gave me my start, attending the NHLA Convention provided me with the network and education seminars that helped establish my career and made my business better. Join me in New Orleans to make your business better, learn new business strategies to help you cope in up and down markets and network with the best and brightest our industry has to offer. I will see you there— Laissez les bons temps rouler!

NORTH AMERICAN HARDWOOD MARKET TRENDS by David Caldwell and Judd Johnson with Hardwood Market Report

D

avid Caldwell and Judd Johnson of the Hardwood Market Report will report on the hardwood marketplace and the factors currently influencing business and potential business change. Caldwell and Johnson are considered experts in hardwood markets, using their vast resources of historical data and industry experience.

David Caldwell joined the staff of the Hardwood Market Report as Assistant Editor in March of 2005. David brought with him 21 years of experience in the hardwood lumber and veneer industries. Upon graduation from the University of Memphis, David began his hardwood lumber career by attending and graduating from the National Hardwood Lumber Association’s Inspector Training School in April of 1984. After gaining experience as a lumber inspector, he worked in hardwood lumber sales before delving into the sawmill business. Before joining Hardwood Market Report, David worked for a major flooring and sawmill company, managing sales and production of the sawmill division and oversight of 50 million board feet of hardwood lumber.

Judd Johnson is Editor of Hardwood Market Report. He joined the company in 1994 after spending the first 18 years of his career working in primary and secondary manufacturing sectors of the hardwood industry. He is a proud alum of NHLA’s Inspector Training School (60th class). In his time with Hardwood Market Report, he has contributed to many initiatives that helped hardwood companies improve their business. Publications developed during his tenure include The Year at a Glance, an annual magazine that pulled together rich information from all industry sectors into a single collection of work; HMR Executive®, a monthly publication concentrating on issues that influence business activity for hardwoods; and HMR Import Newsletter™, the latest HMR publication that details trends in markets and pricing for major temperate and tropical hardwood lumber species imported into the U.S. Mr. Johnson is regularly featured as a speaker at conferences and conventions for state, regional, national, and international trade events that serve the hardwood lumber industry and secondary wood products manufacturing sectors.

TARIFFS, TRADE WARS AND THE FUTURE OF US HARDWOOD EXPORTS by Mike Snow, Executive Director of the American Hardwood Export Council

HEC Executive Director Michael Snow will provide a detailed update on US hardwood exports to the world, with a particular emphasis on the trade war with China and increasing trade tensions with Canada, Mexico and the EU and how the resulting uncertainty is impacting hardwood exports. This will be followed by a panel discussion with the AHEC Directors from Europe, Latin America, Middle East/India, Japan and China/Southeast Asia concerning trends in their respective regions. FRIDAY SCHEDULE OF EVENTS

6PM RECEPTION With Entertainment by the Victory Belles

7PM DINNER SERVED 8PM AFTER DINNER ENTERTAINMENT

After three exhilarating days at the global gathering of the hardwood community, it’s time to end the 2019 NHLA Annual Convention on a high note. How high you ask? How about 100-feet. ABOUT THE FREEDOM PAVILION:

The US Freedom Pavilion: Boeing Center is the tallest building on the museum campus and is a dramatic architectural statement paying tribute to the 16 million Americans who served in all branches of the US Armed Forces during World War II. Elevated catwalks provide eye-level views to six WWII aircraft that soar spectacularly overhead, including the Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress “My Gal Sal,” plus an SBD Dauntless and a TBM Avenger. The Vehicles of War exhibit, located on the ground floor, focuses on the equipment vital to land battles, including the M3 Half-track and ubiquitous Sherman tank, which were used to achieve Allied victory in World War II. Climb up to the fourth-floor viewing bridge and let yourself take in the aerial vista of huge antique warplanes suspended in the cavernous interior, illuminated by daylight through the 96-foot-high glass wall. The U.S. Freedom Pavilion is a sight to see, but we invite you to stay for the friendship and camaraderie that makes the hardwood lumber industry so special.

The Victory Belles are a delightful vocal trio performing the music of the 1940s, serenading audiences at The National WWII Museum and across the globe. The music of the 1940s brought hope and joy to our GIs and those on the Home Front alike—and the Victory Belles keep that tradition alive in rich, three-part harmony. Their repertoire includes all the treasured gems of the WWII era plus patriotic classics including a musical salute to each branch of the US armed forces.

*Please Note: The National WWII Museum is open 9am to 5pm daily. The museum is located in downtown New Orleans on a six-acre campus, where five soaring pavilions house historical exhibits, on-site restoration work, a period dinner theater, and restaurants. The NHLA Grand Finale will take place in the U.S. Freedom Pavilion. The rest of the Museum Campus will be closed. Please make time during your visit to explore this amazing museum, it can be a full-day or multi-day excursion.

Tickets for this event are $75 and may be purchased through registration as space allows – the Grand Finale is a popular event. Sign up in advance.
