PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE

BETTING ON VEGAS! As summer has finally arrived and temperatures are helping us forget about the long winter, it is now time to make plans to attend the 2014 NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase in Las Vegas, Nevada October 8-10. With the improvement of the hardwood industry and shortage of material, this year’s NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase is a must attend. The convention will mirror the North American hardwood industry and will be better than we have experienced in the last 6 years! The convention will have something for everyone. Kicking off this year’s conference will be the dynamic Keynote address by Bill Taylor, co-founder of Fast Company magazine, sponsored by Rossi Group. After the Opening Session there will be four uninterrupted hours in the Exhibit Showcase followed by a diverse offering of educational seminars. Every year, NHLA welcomes affiliated hardwood groups who hold their meetings and events in conjunction with the NHLA convention. This year we welcome the American Hardwood Export Council, American Walnut Manufacturers Association, Canadian Hardwood Bureau, Fellowship of Christian Lumberman, Hardwood Distributors Association, Hardwood Federation, Hardwood Forest Foundation and the International Wood Products Association. Please make sure when you register for the NHLA Convention to sign up for the two Hardwood Forest Foundation events, the HFF Annual Golf Tournament and new this year, the HFF Bowling Competition. Networking will be in full swing this year as we kick-off the NHLA Convention with a poolside reception on Wednesday evening sponsored by Dakota Hardwoods. Networking has always been a focus for those attending the convention and this year’s facility and schedule will enable for extended opportunities. I know my wife will not let me go to Vegas without her, so make sure to bring your spouse to Vegas. They will not want to miss the Showgirls 101 program, where spouses and guests of attendees to the 2014 NHLA Annual Convention will learn the art of and life of a showgirl from actual former showgirls. The showgirls will arrive without makeup and transform themselves into showgirls while the audience asks questions about their lives, how they got started, showgirl bloopers and many other topics. Preregistration is required: Sign up when you complete convention registration.

Whether you are buying or selling, you will have the opportunity to expand your business contacts and increase your company’s overall profitability by attending the NHLA Convention.

Because it is Vegas, you will not want to miss out on the opportunity to win the HFF 50/50 Drawing or the Hardwood Federation PAC diamond earrings. Please watch for opportunities to purchase tickets for these two drawings throughout the convention. In its second year, the NHLA Convention mobile app will allow you an interactive experience. You can download the mobile app for free to your iPhone, iPad or Android by visiting https://crowd.cc/s/2k6U from your device. Apple and Android users can also search for the app in the iTunes store or Play store. Once installed you have instant access to awesome features, like: the full event schedule, contact info of other attendees, social sharing on Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, detailed info about speakers, exhibitors and sponsors, and notification of important updates, offers, etc. 4

Please register now and make sure not to miss out on the opportunity to represent your company in this rising market. On a final note, I would like everyone to join me in once again thanking and recognizing our presenting sponsor, Lumbermen’s Underwriting Alliance. With the generosity and support of LUA and the other 2014 Convention sponsors, NHLA is able to provide an enhanced convention experience for all. Amy and I look forward to seeing you at this year’s NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase October 8–10. I am not a big gambler, but I am betting on Vegas!

2014 KEYNOTE SPEAKER

WILLIAM TAYLOR Opening Session – Thursday, October 9 – 8am Sponsored by Rossi Group Founding Editor, Fast Company and Best-selling Author, Practically Radical: Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself Bill Taylor is an agenda-setting writer, speaker and entrepreneur who has shaped the global conversation about the best ways to compete, innovate and succeed. His project, Practically Radical: Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself, is based on in-depth access to 25 organizations that are making deep-seated changes under the most trying circumstances imaginable. These organizations (from hard-charging technology companies to long-established nonprofits, from hospitals to automakers to banks) are mastering a set of strategies and practices that define the work of leadership in turbulent times-ideas from which every leader can learn. The book was published by William Morrow, an imprint of HarperColllins, in January 2011. It became an immediate Wall Street Journal best seller and the #1 best seller on the Inc./800CEORead Hardcover Business list. Daniel H. Pink, bestselling author of Drive and A Whole New Mind, calls the book “the most powerful and instructive change manual you’ll ever read.” Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross, calls it “a must-read for organizations that want to stay energized and relevant.” The New York Journal of Books called Practically Radical “a successor to Jim Collins’ seminal book, Good to Great.” The Washington Times called it “an eyeopening joy.” CNN, in an in-depth report on the book, declared that Taylor “has a cult following in workplace and management circles.” The paperback edition of Practically Radical, fully updated and with an all-new “work book” of exercises to help meet the big challenges of change, was published on July 31, 2012.

W W W. N H L A C O N V E N T I O N . C O M

Practically Radical is a sequel of sorts to Taylor’s book, Mavericks at Work: Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win. “I didn’t just ‘read’ this book, I devoured it!” declared Tom Peters when Mavericks appeared. James J. Cramer, co-founder of TheStreet.com and host of CNBC’s Mad Money with Jim Cramer, had this to say: “If Mavericks at Work had come out before I started TheStreet.com, I could have saved my investors (and myself) $100 million-because I would have been able to take the lessons in the book and apply them every day to my business.” Added talent guru Marcus Buckingham: “You must find the time to read this book.” Just weeks after its release, Mavericks became a New York Times best seller, a Wall Street Journal business best seller and a BusinessWeek best seller. It was the subject of articles, reviews and columns in many top publications, including U.S. News & World Report, The Boston Globe and The Economist, which called the book “a pivotal work in the tradition of In Search of Excellence and Good to Great.” The Economist also named Mavericks one of its “Books of the Year, 2006.” Other accolades include: “Top Ten Business Book of The Year” (amazon.com), “Top Ten Book on Innovation and Design” (BusinessWeek) and “2006 Picks of the Year in Business Books” (The Financial Times). The book also generated big attention on the small screen. ABC’s Good Morning America devoted two segments (called Maverick Monday) to the book, and NBC’s Weekend TODAY devoted a lengthy segment to its vision of the new workplace. CNBC aired a five-part series, hosted by Maria Bartiromo, called The Business of Innovation, which spotlighted a number of companies and executives drawn from the pages of Mavericks at Work, and for which Taylor was an on-air commentator. Taylor’s latest book, Average Is Not an Option, will be released in 2015. Taylor’s books highlight a career devoted to challenging conventional wisdom and showcasing the power of business at its best. As co-founder and founding editor of Fast Company, he launched a magazine that won countless awards, earned a passionate following among executives and entrepreneurs around the world-and became a legendary business success. In less than six years, an enterprise that took shape in some borrowed office space in Harvard Square sold for $340 million.

Fast Company has won just about every award there is to win in the magazine world, from “Startup of the Year” to “Magazine of the Year” to two National Magazine Awards. In recognition of Fast Company’s impact on business, Taylor was named “Champion of Workplace Learning and Performance” by the American Society of Training and Development. Past winners include Jack Welch of GE and Fred Smith of FedEx. Taylor is the co-author of three other books on strategy, leadership and innovation: The Big Boys: Power and Position in American Business; No-Excuses Management and Going Global. He has published numerous essays and CEO interviews in The Harvard Business Review, and his column, “Under New Management,” ran in the Sunday Business section of The New York Times. Another column, “Bill Taylor on Big Ideas,” ran in The Guardian newspaper of London. Today, Taylor chronicles his research, insights and lessons in a popular blog Harvard Business Online, the digital arm of The Harvard Business Review. A graduate of Princeton University and the MIT Sloan School of Management, he lives in Wellesley, Massachusetts, with his wife and two daughters. Bill Taylor is a best-selling author, celebrated entrepreneur and groundbreaking thinker on leadership and innovation. Taylor is the author of the New York Times best seller Mavericks at Work: Why the Most Original Minds in Business Win and Practically Radical: Not-So-Crazy Ways to Transform Your Company, Shake Up Your Industry, and Challenge Yourself, which is based on his in-depth access to 25 organizations that are making deep-seated changes under the most trying circumstances imaginable. His forthcoming book, Average Is Not an Option, is due out in 2015. These organizations (from hard-charging technology companies to long-established nonprofits, from hospitals to automakers to banks) are mastering a set of strategies and practices that define the work of leadership in turbulent times – ideas from which every leader can learn. Having made his name as a hugely successful editor and entrepreneur who co-founded and took Fast Company magazine from startup to a $340 million sale in less than six years, Taylor speaks with authority and experience on embracing people-centric approaches to leadership, a network approach to cultivating ideas and a relentless focus on being extraordinary all in the name of creating market dominance. Provocative and inspiring, Bill offers firsthand accounts of how game changers are transforming their companies and shaking up their industries – and insights into how you can do the same in your own organization. 12

In addition to Mr. Taylor’s address, the 2014 NHLA Convention will also feature an Enhanced Chinese Culture Workshop led by Mr. Marco Chan, CEO of AmAsia3 Corporation. A former FedEx senior executive of more than 20 years, Marco started up the Business Logistics Services in Asia and when FedEx started flying into China, he was appointed as the first General Manager in China. The Friday, October 10 Cultural Workshop will help attendees understand key Chinese cultural values that significantly influence behaviors of Chinese consumers and business people; and offer up some proven business practices that will help you to engage in trades with Chinese successfully. Registration is now open and can be accessed at www.nhlaconvention.com. EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP

CHINESE CULTURE ENHANCED EDUCATIONAL WORKSHOP Marco Chan, CEO, AmAsia3 Corporation – Friday, October 10 – 8:30am Sponsored by The Jacobs Team Marco Chan and his group of consultants at AmAsia3 enjoys helping companies on both sides of the Pacific to engage in commerce successfully, by sharing with them the cultural insights they gained and the community network they have built through their years of business experience in Asia and America. Marco is former FedEx senior executive of more than 20 years, managing different functions including customer services, ground and ramp operations and supply chain logistics in United States and Asia. He started up the Business Logistics Services in Asia, and when FedEx started flying into China, he was appointed as the first General Manager in China. Upon return from his Asia assignment, he wanted to share what he learned. He co-designed with the International School of Business at the University of Memphis and implemented a 5-day Global Education seminar, teaching corporate executives how to conduct business within various international cultures in Asia, Middle East, Europe and Latin America. He also discovered his passion to help Asian employees to be positive contributors in the United States and to help American executives understand Asian employees and customers. In October 2003, he started his consulting practice, and has worked with hundreds of managers in the U.S. and Asia to help them become more effective global business leaders. Marco holds a MBA degree from Rivier College, Nashua, New Hampshire and a BBA degree from University of Hawaii.

Takahiro Tsuji joined the American Hardwood Export Council as Director of its Osaka, Japan office in 1992. He has organized Hang Tag Promotion, Eco-Furniture Contests, Eco-Interior Project and Architect Seminars, etc. to introduce the effective usage of American hardwood to Japanese end-users since 2000. And he has been visiting Japanese furniture & interior materials manufacturers, architects, designers and lumber importers individually for providing the current information of American hardwoods to them and has been trying to find out some possibility of piggyback promotions of American hardwoods with them. Since 2006 he had been negotiating with the Forestry Agency of the Japanese Government about the legality of American hardwood and the American Hardwood Responsible Procurement Policy (AHEC RPP) has been admitted as one of legality officially in Japan in 2009. Now, AHEC is the only authorized overseas association to be able to issue the legality under Green Procurement Law in Japan. He was born in Osaka in 1957 and graduated from Kuwansei Gakuin University in Nishiomiya, Hygo in 1981. David Venables has been involved with the AHEC programs since 1995 taking over as European Director in April 2000. David has a specialised background in hardwood, a BSc in Timber Technology and 30 years experience in the international marketing of hardwood products. Under his direction, the AHEC programs have increased their focus on architects & designers and, arguably, produced one of the most creative marketing campaigns ever for wood. David has also been responsible for developing and implementing AHEC’s unique and forward thinking environmental strategy.

Rod Wiles has worked for the American Hardwood Export Council since 1999. Initially based in the European Office in London, Rod initiated AHEC’s programs in the Middle East and North Africa and, subsequently, in India. He also worked closely with AHEC’s European Director on activities in both Western and Eastern Europe. Since 2010, Rod has based himself in Singapore, from where he continues to oversee AHEC’s activities in the Middle East, North Africa and India, as well as in Australia/New Zealand and, most recently, in South Africa. Luis Zertuche is the head of the Latin America office for the American Hardwood Export Council and has over 18 years of experience in international marketing, trade marketing and promotion of American hardwood export products into Mexico, Latin America and the Caribbean. He has influenced and worked closely with architects and designers in specifying American hardwoods in their projects through an extensive PR and technical capacitation programs. Educated at the Universidad Nuevo Mundo in Mexico City in Communications and Marketing, Mr. Zertuche has worked in multiple areas of the communication area including mass media, radio, television and the film industry.

MEET THE PRESENTING SPONSOR

A MESSAGE FROM OUR PRESENTING SPONSOR Hunter S. Thompson wrote of Las Vegas, “A little bit of this town goes a very long way.” While Mr. Thompson was pursuing his individual dreams, we know October 8–10 will offer each of you an opportunity to produce long-term benefits by networking with former, current, and new business partners, and working collectively to build on the NHLA vision of being the “Global Standard for Hardwood Trade and Commerce.” Lumbermen’s Underwriting Alliance (LUA) is honored to celebrate its 9th consecutive year as the presenting sponsor of the NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase. It is a privilege to partner with the NHLA organization, its staff, the Executive Committee, and each of you. LUA has sought, and will continue to seek areas where we can support the NHLA in achieving its strategic goals. One of those areas is in providing distinct advantages to LUA subscribers who are active members of the NHLA. The NHLA/LUA Value in Partnership (VIP) program has now returned over $1 million in dividends to individual members. The VIP program provides the opportunity to earn up to a 10 percent return of the earned premium for enrollees once targeted loss ratios are achieved. This is an annual program, and the best part is that members can enter at any time throughout the calendar year and still be eligible for year-end dividends. It is also easier than ever to gain access to LUA. We have changed our business model and can now partner directly with your agent or broker. Your current agent/broker can contact one of our LUA field offices and they will begin the process for you. You can find our office locations at www.lua.cc. LUA is not simply an insurer for the forest products industry. We were founded by 23 lumbermen in January 1905. Those 23 lumbermen started with a vision to provide quality insurance programs to the group, and their long-term goals have been managed and overseen by the Lynn family since 1917. On behalf of Christine Lynn, Jan Carlsson, and the entire LUA family, we look forward to seeing you at the 2014 NHLA Annual Convention & Exhibit Showcase in Las Vegas. On a personal note, I hope each of you have a very successful and productive couple of days together. The NHLA Annual Convention provides a great forum to exchange ideas and continue to promote relevant topics within our industry. Additionally, the backdrop of Las Vegas creates an exciting, high-energy venue for this year’s convention. Best wishes,

Wil Nance Senior Vice President Operations Lumbermen’s Underwriting Alliance

NHLA KILN DRYING CERTIFICATE REPLACES USDA PHYTOSANITARY AND WHAT DOES THAT MEAN FOR YOUR COMPANY? In 2008, NHLA entered into an agreement with the United States Department of Agriculture to operate an Animal and Plant Health Inspection Services (APHIS) approved Certification of Kiln Drying Sawn Hardwood Lumber Program. The Program, initiated by APHIS, is controlled through a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two organizations. The Program achieves the same goals as the APHIS Phytosanitary Certificate but at less cost to both APHIS and the U.S. hardwood industry. The system mirrors the successful softwood certification program previously developed by APHIS for the European Union. The Program involves regular inspections of subscribing hardwood facilities in the U.S. by both NHLA contracted inspectors and APHIS inspectors to ensure continuing conformance to the Kiln Drying Sawn Hardwood Standard. The current countries that accept the NHLA KD Certificate as an equivalent to the PHYTO are listed in the side bar. The European Union countries accepted hardwoods are: oaks, sycamore, Hard Maple and Pacific Coast Maple, not ash. China and Mexico are currently reviewing acceptance of the NHLA KD Certificate. Information will be released on additional country acceptance as NHLA is notified. If your company is interested in learning more about the program or would like to join, contact Chief Inspector Dana Spessert at 901-399-7551 or by email at d.spessert@nhla.com.
