VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF PROGRAMMING When we were all working at the station, often times you would find Hazel Molin’s office door slightly ajar, the faint glow of lights flickering off the wall and muffled voices coming from inside. Hazel is at work and watching television. Watching television at work? YES! Hazel is the Manager of Broadcast Content. She’s the one who is responsible for scheduling NHPBS’ five channels. She deals primarily with NHPBS, NHPBS Explore, but also with Create, World and PBS Kids 24/7 channels. Since 2011, when NHPBS lost all of its state funding, Hazel has worked alongside WGBH programmers to acquire programs at discounted rates and to bounce scheduling ideas off of them. “I screen and curate programs from a variety of sources, including several national distributors and local independent producers,” says Hazel. Now that is a lot of TV! Hazel’s love of public television developed when she was a student at the University of New Hampshire. She recalls watching plenty of Masterpiece Theatre with her aunt and uncle. “On my college vacations, I watched several series with them — I, CLAUDIUS, THE FLAME TREES OF THIKA and many others.” She landed a support job in the programming department at Channel 11, grew into creating the broadcast logs, which account for every second of the broadcast day, and was promoted to her current position in 2000. For over 30 years now, Hazel has been working with and scheduling programs at NHPBS. She’s considered a superhero in the PBS programmers world. She can calculate time in her head, she can recall obscure programming details in the middle of a meeting, and her attention to detail is second to none. On the homefront, she’s a devoted grandmother, she can bake a fierce Christmas stollen bread, and she has sewn plenty of handmade, treasured baby quilts for family and coworkers. But her true talents lie in how she can pick up on a programming theme from PBS and
then localize it to NHPBS. “I’ll search the distributor’s database for programs that will fit the theme. For example, this month I needed a 30-minute show and remembered KARAMU. It fit nicely between a documentary on racism and leading into a block of summer dramas.” Did we mention Hazel has a mind like a steel trap? Hazel is the number one person that the BritWit Club members want to meet. “They like to hear what is coming up and are very interactive with us about the British programs. I enjoy educating them about programming rights and explaining why you can’t just air something from the past.” What’s coming this fall? Well, Hazel has a few shows she can share: FRONTLINE - THE CHOICE, the long awaited conclusion of LAST TANGO IN HALIFAX, VAN DER VALK on MASTERPIECE, which is set in Amersterdam and ISLANDS OF WONDER. And don’t worry--Hazel has already screened these programs, and she says you’re going to love them! Go to nhpbs.org/schedule for our up-to-date program schedule.
