FEB 2021 VOL. 9 NO. 2

Henry Louis Gates, Jr. The Black Church

BRINGING THE FULL STORY OF OUR HUMANITY TO NEW HAMPSHIRE As a young girl, Tricia Peone was fascinated by stories about the Salem witch trials. The New Hampshire Humanities public programs director remembers reading the same book over and over, and it laid the foundation for her education. With a PhD in history specializing in early modern magic and witchcraft of the 17th and 18th centuries, Peone is still amazed that there are new things to discover about that period and how it relates to today’s understanding of modern medicine and science. Peone is responsible for developing the programming for the New Hampshire Humanities. Last year she hosted a podcast for NHPR entitled Real Witches of New Hampshire. She says, “People think they may know a lot about a place like New Hampshire, but there are always new stories to be told.” Like many organizations in the Granite State, the New Hampshire Humanities had to adapt to the pandemic. Peone says once they moved programming online, they reached a larger audience. “Despite some internet issues, many were able to participate in our programs from the comfort of their homes.” A series on Democracy and the Informed Citizen was postponed and will likely return this year. It is designed to connect people with journalism through the lens of the humanities. A new book club series is also in the works. Peone hopes to feature the book Never Caught: The Washingtons’ Relentless Pursuit of Their Runaway Slave, Ona Judge. The story of Judge’s life

in New Hampshire will help people see a new early-American story. New Hampshire Humanities has three main principles when choosing programming. “The programs must be accessible, inclusive and informative.” Peone finds many PBS programs fit that bill. When she was a teacher, she used PBS programs in her classroom. She personally enjoys HISTORY DETECTIVES, SECRETS OF THE DEAD and the documentaries of British historian Lucy Worsley. This month, NHPBS will broadcast THE BLACK CHURCH: THIS IS OUR STORY, THIS IS OUR SONG. In this two-part series, historian Henry Louis Gates, Jr. explores the role faith has played in the African American community. Peone will host an online screening and discussion with NHPBS on the film on Monday, February 8th. Go to nhpbs.org/events to register. Peone explains that the humanities help us see a fuller picture of history and therefore ourselves. “You can’t understand your place in the world without the humanities,” says Peone. “We need interdisciplinary humanities programs to help us see the connections we have with the past and each other.” Peone sees a strong connection between the missions of New Hampshire Humanities and New Hampshire PBS. Both are essential public service organizations that bring rich stories of shared humanity to the public. Both seek to connect ideas to everyone in the Granite State, and both are worthy of support.
