CONNECTIONS
JAN 2021 VOL. 9 NO. 1
KEEPING CONNECTIONS STRONG Surrounded by color and ever moving—that’s how we would describe Granite Society member Gillian Aguilar. The walls of her condominium in Portsmouth, N.H. are covered with brightly colored paintings and pictures of grandchildren and family vacations. There’s even one of Gillian and a friend posing with WINDOWS TO THE WILD host Willem Lange. Walking around her condo is like a visual treasure hunt. We caught up with Gillian this past summer to find out why she thinks it’s so important to support New Hampshire PBS. Hailing from Pinner, Middlesex, England, Gillian spent many years taking a half-hour train ride to London for work, exiting at the famous Sherlock Holmes stop at Baker Street. When she turned 24, she traveled to America. “I think I only thought I was coming for a year or two for an interesting experience,” says Gillian. Instead she ended up meeting her husband of 49 years, Francis, and has stayed in the States ever since. “This is definitely my home. I love things that are British, but I’m very happy to be an American.”
German language group, takes out her brushes for a Zoom painting group (watercolors are her favorite) and enjoys a socially distanced lunch with her friends and family in Prescott Park when the weather is good. Gillian believes stretching her mind and her body is essential. “I try to walk every day sometimes two times a day if the weather is alright.” And every evening, she turns on New Hampshire PBS. “I watch the PBS NEWSHOUR, GREATER BOSTON and WASHINGTON WEEK. On the lighter side, I enjoy MASTERPIECE and, of course, DOWNTON ABBEY. That was such fun to watch.” Gillian also fancies a good nature program. “I love WINDOWS TO THE WILD with Willem Lange because I’ve climbed most of the mountains he’s hiking.” And as if it was something everyone has done before, Gillian quickly adds that she and her husband hiked all of the 48 New Hampshire four thousand-footers back in the day.
A former German and French teacher by profession, Gillian loves to keep learning, and she does this by remaining involved with her community. Gillian has sat on the boards of several local non-profits, helped tend the gardens at Strawbery Banke Museum and the MoffattLadd House and loves to take in a show at one of the local theaters.
We can’t thank donors like Gillian enough for their continued support throughout the year. “New Hampshire PBS is a wonderful station to watch. I keep discovering different things— opera, ANTIQUES ROADSHOW and, I can’t forget, DOC MARTIN,” says Gillian. “To me there is a huge difference when I watch NHPBS— it’s a very intelligent station, and it keeps me interested. I don’t know what I would do without New Hampshire PBS. I probably wouldn’t turn on the television much.”
The COVID-19 pandemic hasn’t slowed her down one bit—it’s just changed the way she stays connected. Now, she facilitates a weekly online
