MASTERPIECES THAT MOVE US

Get ready for more heartwarming stories, vivid characters, quaint countryside and memorable animal encounters. ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL returns to New Hampshire PBS on January 8th. Season three contains seven new episodes, airing Sunday evenings at 9 PM through February 19th.

James Alfred Wight was English-born but Scottishraised. He spent nearly 50 years as a veterinarian in the Yorkshire Dales, a region of northeast England known for its picturesque green river valleys, hills, limestone caves and miles of dry-stone walls. His encounters with people and animals in the rural area formed the basis for his novels, published under the pen name James Herriot. His books sold millions of copies and spurred several different film and television adaptations.

The latest season of ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL takes place in 1939, with war looming in Europe. James undergoes changes both personal and professional: wedding bells ring, and he becomes a partner in the veterinary practice, helping with efforts to grow the business.

Both critics and the public have hailed this latest screen adaptation from MASTERPIECE. ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL is one of the most popular series on PBS since DOWNTON ABBEY introduced a new generation of viewers to public television in 2011.

“Americans love a good story, especially one steeped in history with well-drawn characters whose humanity touches all of us,” says Dawn DeAngelis, vice president and chief content officer at NHPBS. “Many of our viewers are Anglophiles who love everything British – people, culture and language. There’s something about a British accent that makes a story that much more compelling!”

Many other British originals have aired on NHPBS over the years including beloved hits like GRANTCHESTER, VICTORIA and CALL THE MIDWIFE. And drama fans, there are more showstoppers kicking off new seasons that will fill your nights! Don’t miss season three of MISS SCARLET & THE DUKE and SISTER BONIFACE MYSTERIES both premiere in January on NHPBS.

“These epic stories take some of our greatest literary works and bring them to the screen with lush period detail and poignancy,” says DeAngelis. “British visual storytellers take their historical details very seriously. They all have consultants on set making sure every detail is exactly as it should be. I also appreciate how the characters’ dialogue is appropriate to the time and place of the story.”

Recognizing the fondness viewers have for British programming, NHPBS created the BritWit Club for those who want to show their affinity for British programming and support NHPBS. BritWit Club members attend twice-yearly screenings and receive monthly newsletter updates throughout the year, while providing valuable feedback to NHPBS about their viewing habits and preferences.

“Just about every program you see on MASTERPIECE is just that – a masterpiece that stands the test of time,” says DeAngelis. “BritWit Club members help us fund MASTERPIECE programs on NHPBS and acquire new programs to round out our schedule.”

If British dramas like ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL are your cup of tea, consider signing up for the NHPBS BritWit club and join a community of like-minded anglophiles. Sign up at today at nhpbs.org/britwit. Cheers!
