JULY 2020 VOL. 8 NO. 7

CELEBRATING WOMEN’S SUFFRAGE One hundred years ago, the 19th amendment was ratified, guaranteeing all American women the right to vote. For many of us, it’s hard to believe that women fought for and against their own suffrage. It was a long, contentious battle divided by class and race, and the deep controversies that divided Americans then continue to dominate today’s political discourse. On July 6th at 9 pm, AMERICAN EXPERIENCE will premiere THE VOTE, a new four-hour, two-part documentary series that tells the dramatic story of the epic — and surprisingly unfamiliar — crusade waged by American women for the right to vote. Focusing primarily on the movement’s militant and momentous final decade, the film charts American women’s determined march to the ballot box and illuminates the myriad social, political and cultural obstacles that stood in their path. THE VOTE delves deeply into the controversies that divided the nation in the early 20th century — gender, race, states’ rights and political power — and offers an absorbing lesson in the delicate, often fractious dynamics of social change. Throughout the month of July, NHPBS will feature several programs focusing on the unsung leaders of a movement that transformed culture and politics and

resulted in the largest expansion of voting rights in U.S. history. As we head toward the fall presidential election, NHPBS will offer a slate of multiplatform content throughout the summer. We’ll be celebrating all of the trailblazing women whose grit and determination continue to transform our lives. The challenges we face today are daunting — racism, politics, public health threats and more. These stories of women who’ve made, and continue to make history, provide light, hope and inspiration we all need right about now.
