MAY 2022 VOL. 10 NO. 5
GREAT FINDS! Looking for something sparkly, something tasty, something relaxing — or just the chance to be someplace else? The New Hampshire PBS Spring Auction is your ticket to a multitude of goods, services and memorable experiences, with the bonus feel-good factor of doing your part to support public television and community businesses. The 49th NHPBS Spring Auction runs entirely online from Monday, May 2nd through Thursday, May 26th. Several businesses, unable to donate during the pandemic, are making a welcome return, offering everything from jewelry and artworks to restaurant meals, gift cards, lodging packages, and recreational equipment. Items up for bid include: •
•
• • • • • •
A romantic dinner for two with 360-degree views of the ocean and historic Newburyport, courtesy of The Lighthouse Preservation Society. Cruise packages on beautiful Lake Winnipesaukee with Mount Washington Cruises – celebrating 150 years of cruising the state’s largest lake! A suite rental at Northeast Delta Dental Stadium to enjoy a NH Fisher Cats game. Lilac bushes from the NH Governor’s Lilac and Wildflower Commission. Coupons for cheese and dairy products, courtesy of Cabot Creamery Co-operative. Handmade quilts from a supporter in Nevada who donates her handiwork every year. Lunch with Willem Lange, beloved host of WINDOWS TO THE WILD. NHPBS tote bags, containing locally made items from NH MADE — this year’s tote has a new look, with a zipper on top and pockets on both sides.
“The online auction has proven successful and even broadened participation,” said Diane LaRochelle, the
NHPBS auction manager. “Between our Holiday Auction in December and last year’s Spring Auction, we typically see around 800 bidders for each auction. It’s amazing how people are drawn to the event and really want to support the station and get a deal at the same time. It’s a win-win for everyone.” LaRochelle and auction assistant Barbara Mariacher work year-round to ensure the event’s success. Efforts involve reaching out to more than 1900 businesses and donors, plus gathering and distributing auction items and providing customer service. LaRochelle says everyone at NHPBS — from senior leadership to communications, production and maintenance staff — helps with the auction in some capacity. “All of these donated goods are housed in a warehouse on the station grounds,” said Mariacher, a veteran of the auction for more than 30 years who started as a teenage volunteer. “Every item is labeled and numbered, as are the many shelves housing our donations. Food items require special storage.” Volunteer help is essential. Richard Shepherd of Somersworth and Russell Manchester of Nottingham help with everything from data entry and filing to organizing auction items. A whole crew of volunteers pick up donations at businesses all around the state and beyond. “When you go online and see what is up for bid, you’re going to see different businesses, both large and small,” said Mariacher. “It’s a great way to learn what’s in your community and support what’s in your community – New Hampshire, southern Maine, Vermont and Massachusetts. This is a time when many of these businesses need our support.” Learn more about the NHPBS Spring Auction at nhpbs.org/auction. Businesses or individuals interested in donating can e-mail the team at auction@nhpbs.org.
