CONNECTIONS

WORDS FROM WILLEM My Dear Friends, Can it be our sixteenth year already of Windows to the Wild? It hardly seems possible, but the calendar and my body both attest to it. Now, with the cooler weather upon us, the New Hampshire PBS crew and I have plenty of shoots on the calendar to look forward to, and we have many episodes already edited that you’ll be seeing this fall and winter. It feels like just a couple of weeks ago we followed Rachael Caron over Wildcat Ridge in the White Mountains. She was completing a quest – to climb all the 48 NH 4000-footers – that she and her husband had begun together, and almost completed, when he died a year ago, a few rods short of their 46th. This shoot was an emotional day for us all. Before that, we visited the beautiful Castle in the Clouds, perched high above Lake Winnipesaukee, and we explored a few choice segments of the new Cross New Hampshire Adventure Trail that covers 83 miles from the Vermont border to Maine. On that one, we had sled dogs, horses, bicycles and llamas. Federico Fellini would have loved it! I am looking forward to exploring a mysterious and almost forgotten bit of New Hampshire wilderness; taking a brief hike with the author and outdoors-woman Laura Waterman; visiting Thetford Academy to check out their outdoor education program, which in this pandemic year is a natural choice; and if we can pry him loose from his busy hiking and writing life, we’ll do another walk-and-talk with our old friend Tom

Ryan and his dogs, Samwise and Emily – who don’t seem to be much impressed by Kiki running around them. With the current restrictions on travel, I’m having to reflect that, if you’ve got to be under house arrest, northern New England is as nearly perfect a place as there could be. My old home county in New York State is shaded in red. If I go there, even for lunch, I have to quarantine for two weeks when I get back. So that’s out for now. I go to church by Zoom, shop for groceries at uncrowded hours and join my friends for coffee, weather permitting, socially distanced on folding chairs on the local college lawn. My physical trainer has given me a list of daily exercises to stave off some of the ravages of age. I do ‘em, but pretty much hate ‘em. And every afternoon, if it isn’t raining, Kiki and I take the convertible up to our local park, where there are more squirrels, gray and red, and chipmunks than she could conjure up in her wildest dreams. We often walk with a local high school French teacher, so I’m getting language and pronunciation lessons as well. I hope you are all keeping safe and well and that we’ll have yet another pleasant season together on WINDOWS TO THE WILD. - Willem Lange P.S. I would enjoy having you along for our adventures. Join me for the new season of WINDOWS TO THE WILD Wednesdays at 7:30 p.m. on New Hampshire PBS. And remember, you can watch it online, anytime at nhpbs.org/windows.
