CONNECTIONS

SEP 2020 VOL. 8 NO. 9

A LEGACY IN THE MAKING One of the greatest compliments that John Swope ever received was from a former colleague at Chubb Insurance. They ran into each other on the street one day, and she said, “John, why didn’t you tell me those were going to be the good ol’ days?” During his 30 years at Chubb, 18 of them as president, Swope was committed to his employees and to creating a vibrant and engaging work atmosphere. That commitment to community is what still drives him today in retirement. Swope is very active in his home city of Concord, and also as a board member of New Hampshire PBS. “I did not have a business career that people are going to write about. I’m not very creative. But I feel like I’ve done a lot for Concord. I hope that people remember me for my philanthropy and for giving back to my community, which has been my home since 1963.” Swope’s first experience with NHPBS was as chair of the capital campaign to raise funds for a building of our own. At the time, we were known as Channel 11 and were located in the Memorial Union Building on the UNH Durham campus. Swope recalls, “Taping had to stop because we were situated in the basement under a bowling alley, and you could hear and feel the rumble, rumble of the bowling balls.” After serving on the PBS Board, as President of PBS, as interim general manager at NHPBS, and, for many years, as a dedicated NHPBS board member, Swope recently became Director Emeritus. But his commitment to the station doesn’t end there. To honor Swope and his devotion to the future of NHPBS, station President & CEO Peter Frid and the NHPBS Board of Directors have established the John Swope Legacy Society. To help launch the Legacy Society, Swope is challenging viewers and members to

name New Hampshire PBS in their wills or estate plans. For every new bequest naming NHPBS as a beneficiary, Swope will donate $1,000 to our Annual Fund, up to a total gift of $25,000. “I believe PBS has the best product on television. The quality of the content is unmatched by commercial television.” Swope continues, “NH is not one thing. We have the power to tell the story of the state like Willem Lange does on WINDOWS TO THE WILD. NHPBS needs more funds to live up to their promise, and that’s why I have supported them through the years with seed money for program creation -- but they’ll be able do so much more with the help of my legacy gift and those of our viewers and members.” Swope is optimistic that eventually the station will have enough funds to bring back a public affairs program. “We need to be in this space. There is a great need in NH for a weekly news show. As a statewide communications system, NHPBS is best suited to deliver this content, because the North Country is very different than the southern part of the state. We should never forget that there are people throughout the state who rely on our programming.” “NHPBS is a time proven organization that contributes to NH,” says Swope. “It is an untapped resource and capable of doing much more. Life is about planning for the future. I hope you will join me in ensuring a strong and sustainable public television station for generations to come by including NHPBS in your estate plans.” For more information on how you can step up to John Swope’s challenge, email Tamara Hindle at thindle@nhpbs.org.
