Trail Tales

Did

KNOW?

by Chris Gamache, NH Bureau of Trails

Over 90,000 full time jobs are generated by the snowmobile industry in North America. Those jobs are involved in manufacturing, dealerships, and tourism related businesses.

Trail Closure Rumors Abound; but here is the story from my keyboard

Black Spot A

A couple of recent newspaper articles went out that talked about land/trail closures in Coos County due to the Northern Pass project and funds being accepted by trail groups. The articles had a fair amount of incorrect information and did not include some of the most important statements made by our office and some others. This summer the North County OHV Coalition was emailing about a proposed future deal with Eversource (PSNH parent company) that would have supposedly given them land and easement ownerships and future funds for trail projects. As one might imagine the County blew up over this. The proposed energy project is moderately contentious, to say the least. The Coalition ultimately did not accept or make any commitments, but a lot of damage had already been done. Several landowners noted that if any funds were received by any OHRV or snowmobile organizations they would close the trails on their property. At about the same time the Coalition also was awarded a small grant to help with marketing of the Ride the Wilds network. The grant funds came from a job creation fund which was created and funded by Eversource; which is also a landowner with whom we have trails. Several landowners kept their word and closed the trails on their properties. The Coalition Board of Directors then met and decided to decline the grant funds and not accept them. But, the closures were already in place and the landowners minds made up. I met with one of these landowners and we had a good conversation. I understand her position and she knows what we can, and cannot, agree to do to keep trails open. The major statement I made to the correspondents of both papers that talked to me was “we support all landowners and the decisions they make about the public use of their lands for trails.” 3 sections of the public snowmobile trail system were closed this summer because of the possible deal being made and

YOU

Josselyn’s Getaway Log Cabins grant funds being accepted. Those closures are done by the owners of the property on which the trail is located. And, regardless of the reason for a closure we accept it and move on. They own the property and we are fortunate to have had their support for so many years in the past. So, thank you landowners for the years of support and permission you have given over the years. As I write this today 2 of the closed trails have re-opened for the upcoming winter season. Thank you to those landowners that changed their minds. The trail that is still closed will remain closed for the foreseeable future. Thank you landowners for allowing us the use of your lands in the past. Recreational trails are predominantly an at-will agreement with willing landowners. Almost anything can change a landowner’s opinion on keeping their land open for public use. Trails close every year, we reroute some trails every year and we get permission for new trails every year. The ultimate goal of recognized trail organizations is to maintain trails and keep landowners happy with our maintenance and stewardship activities on their lands. Thank you to all landowners for supporting the snowmobile, OHRV or both trails on your properties. Our use of your lands is based upon your decision and we hope to be working with you for years to come.

We Have a State Budget About 3 weeks after writing

the article for the Early Fall edition of the Sno-Traveler, in which I noted we did not have an approved State Budget, we got an approved budget. This was good news because with a 6 month Continuing Resolution Budget we only had ½ of the planned GIA funds available for clubs; this included ½ of the funds we plan on for winter trail grooming. The passage of the budget now allows us to use the full level of funding we had put in the budget for the winter grooming funds. We thank the NH Legislature, Governor’s Office and Executive Council for their support of the snowmobile trail community and their willingness to increase our grant budgets early on to so that the volunteer clubs were not negatively impacted by the budget stalemate.

Clubs need Volunteers for Trails Do you know who performs the maintenance on the trails you like to ride? We do. They are volunteers that give up their weekends and evenings to trim brush, move rocks, build bridges and erect signage. Being an engaged rider, and club member, does not mean you just write a check or swipe a card. It may not be feasible to get to the area your club is located in very often to help, but an hour or two can make a difference. Try to help out. ❄

A Message From the President

ROGER WRIGHT

NHSA President

S

now in October always starts a little passion for the snowmobile season. And that is just what happened! The “Race Into Winter” event must have given mother nature a nudge. The first snowflakes of the season began to fall the weekend after

the Race into Winter event. We know it’s not here to stay but a sign of what’s to come. I have just returned from the 2015 NHSA “Race Into Winter” Grass Drags and Watercross! What a fantastic weekend with a recordbreaking crowd on Saturday. It’s a large team that makes it all happen. Hundreds of club members and NHSA officers join forces to make the largest snowmobile event and snowmobile fundraiser in NH a success. I was proud to be part of the team. I want to thank Event Chair Evelyn Ferrell for the hundreds of hours she spends on providing the leadership to make the event happen. Her dedication is well recognized by all. Thanks to Jena Hayes the Financial Director for keeping us all in line and going above and beyond to make sure everything runs smooth as possible. Thanks to the Race Committee and all the participating Club members for a job well done. Planning

and organizing of the event takes 12 months a year and over 4000 volunteer hours. Several clubs reap the benefits of the event being one of the largest fundraisers of the season. This is all thanks to the thousands of fans who join us over the weekend making the event bigger every year. I thank everyone who joined us at the 2015 Race into Winter Event. For our Clubs, the 2015 Trailmaster Meeting on November 21st at the Attitash Grand Summit Hotel in Bartlett NH. This is a great opportunity for Club leaders to network and take advantage of the many breakout sessions loaded with information. As always, there will be information geared towards several aspects of trail information such as trail maintenance and signing, groomer maintenance and tips. There will also be the breakout session NHSA 101 is geared more for membership management and other important NHSA related information. I hope

This also supports your local club financially. Don’t forget! For added convenience you can join many NH clubs online beginning January 1, 2016. 2. Have you registered your sleds early? Registering your sleds early can save time or delays in taken your first ride. While some choose not to register until they see snow, your sled registration is important as it provides much needed funding for trail maintenance whether it snows or not. 3. Have you serviced your sled yet? I’ve come across many sleds broke down on there first ride. 4. Have you reviewed your riding apparel? Is your riding apparel still in good condition and ready to go? I have learned that following my list is not always fail-safe to be ready but it has sure helped make the first ride better. Let it SNOW! ❄

to meet many of you there and encourage all club officers to join us. The Easter Seals Ride-in Committee has been hard at work in preparation for this year’s event to be held at the Town & Country lnn & Resort in Gorham NH. For those not familiar with this event, proceeds from this fundraiser go directly to Camp Sno-Mo in Gilmanton Ironworks NH. The Camp provides camping opportunities for children and young adults with disability’s or special needs. Be sure to contact your local club or County Director for more information on how you can be involved. If you haven’t already booked your rooms, be sure to get your reservations made soon as rooms will go fast. Are you ready for the snowmobile season? There are many items to prepare for the snowmobile season but at bare minimum, here are a few items on my checklist: 1. Have you joined your local club/nhsa to be sure you have all the latest information on local trails, safety information including eligible registration discount?

ATTENTION SNOWMOBILERS!

Beginning January 1, 2016 You can join your favorite NH Snowmobile Clubs/NHSA ONLINE!

IMPORTANT MEMBERSHIP NEWS

What has changed? NHSA has converted to a web-based membership program beginning this past July. Beginning January 1, 2016, you will be able to join participating NH snowmobile clubs online from your smart phone, tablet or computer with an Internet connection. You will continue to be able to join your favorite clubs by mail or at the registration agents as you have in the past. Now joining online will be an added convenience for you to join anytime you have an extra few minutes. join your favorite clubs online before you arrive at the registration agent to save time by using one of the following ways: 1. Join from your home computer and print a registration voucher to present to the agent as proof of membership. 2. Join from your smart phone or tablet, just before or on your way to the registration agent. You can save a copy of the Registration voucher on your phone to present to the agent as proof of membership or simply log back in to your account and present your phone with the voucher showing as proof of membership. You will be able to join and make donations to as many clubs as you wish online in a simple process. You will also be able to access your account at any time to print or show your registration voucher as proof, just in case you have forgotten or lost your registration voucher.

Why the change? We began having discussions over 3 years ago about improvements that were needed to the membership program. First and foremost, a new system was needed to address audit requirements and delay in membership benefits due to entry time. In addition, the system in place was very cumbersome on many club volunteers and outdated. We began meeting with our clubs last December through County meetings to review if they saw value in online membership. In those discussions, we also reviewed the benefits other states were seeing from online memberships, registrations and convenience to membership. After several meetings with clubs to develop a program that worked for the majority, we developed the Web-based Membership program that is in place today. There may be a few bugs to work out as with every new system, please be patient.

NHSA encourages you to join your local clubs to support their programs as early as possible. The cost of trail maintenance and grooming continues to increase and without your support, providing the smooth trails we enjoy is much more challenging. The benefits of joining your local clubs include up to date information and places money directly into the club or clubs of your choice to make trails better in that riding area.

busy and productive summer and early fall season of OHRV related activities and events are winding down and the focus has shifted to snowmobiles and the winter season ahead. Snowmobile/ OHRV safety classes are being scheduled and most of them are posted to the ride.nh.gov website. OHRV Program Assistant Dennis Etchells has been busy processing event permits, scheduling regional coordinator activities, making class arrangements, and staffing our Safety Booth at the hugely successful and well attended

Grass Drags. We are in the process of ordering equipment for the upcoming season and getting ready. The hunting seasons are in full swing and progressing well. The recent cold temperatures have increased sled registration activity at our front office. We have fielded several calls from agents that have expressed some confusion over what they can accept for proof of a paid club membership. Our licensing staff and I will be meeting with NHSA in advance of the busy registration season to discuss the current progress of the new membership system. It is our goal to minimize impacts to the customer as much as possible. We understand and recognize the frustrations by some but it will be important that we get the remaining issues ironed out to ensure that accurate, reconcilable and auditable data is collected on the registration forms. Some of the current forms of accepted “proof” of a paid membership are inadequate and must change

Jess Racing adds Pro rider Jake Scott, veteran Mike Bauer for 2015-16 AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series will be of great benefit to Jake. We all know the sleds are greatly improved for 2016; now we have to deliver the results. It's going to be fun." Montana Jess was on a roll last winter before a ruptured spleen took him out of action during the ISOC National in Salamanca, New York. Prior to his injury, 18-year-old Montana was leading the points in a highly-competitive national Sport class and had five final round wins to his credit. Jess has been racing snowmobiles since he was six years old. "That injury last season while leading the points was really tough to accept," the younger Jess said. "Yet despite missing three races, I was able to recover in time to sweep the Finale and secure fifth in final points. It wasn't our goal, but I know I was lucky just to race at all after the injury. I'm feeling stronger than ever now, and am excited about having Jake on board this season. As long as we stay healthy, I'm confident we

both can have a great season in ISOC on our new Arctic Cats." Scott, 21, of Port Jefferson, NY, spent the last four winters riding for Levi LaVallee's team on the ISOC national circuit. After winning the Pro Lite championship in 2012-13, he advanced to the ultra-competitive Pro Open class to compete against the world's top snocross athletes. In a respectable rookie season, he finished 11th in points. Last winter, Jake finished 14th in points after competing in all 17 ISOC Pro open finals. "I'm super excited about joining Jess Racing for the new season," Scott said. "I raced with Montana for years and get along very well with him. I was impressed with the 2016 Arctic Cat in a test last spring, and I know a racer like Mike Bauer will be a huge help to me as I get up to speed. I'm about to head west and continue my training for Duluth. This opportunity has me very anxious to go racing." Jess Racing would like to thank

its fine group of marketing partners for their continued support, including Arctic Cat, Central Mass Powersports, Woody's, FXR World Class Outerwear, Rox Speed FX and Malibu Boats. We simply could not compete at this level without your assistance. The 2015-16 ISOC season kicks off on November 27-29 with the 24th annual AMSOIL Duluth

National at Spirit Mountain. Jess Racing will be based out of Princeton, MN, during the ISOC

season, while the riders will stay sharp by training at ERX Motor Park in Elk River, Minnesota.

WESTMINSTER, Mass. (Oct. 23, 2015) - One of New England's most well-respected snowmobile race teams is gearing up for a brand new season, and they've added two new high-profile veterans to an already successful mix. Massachusetts-based Jess Racing competes on the ISOC AMSOIL Championship Snocross Series (ACS), led by veteran rider Montana Jess. The team is proud to officially welcome Pro rider Jake Scott and former racer Mike Bauer as Scott's mechanic for the 201516 season. Scott will compete in the Pro Open class, while Jess will advance from Sport to Pro Lite. "We're very excited about having Jake on board for this season," team owner Carl Jess said. "He's a fast rider with tons of talent and excellent training skills. He'll make a great teammate for Montana, who is excited about moving up to Pro Lite this season. I know Ziggy will continue to keep Montana's sled dialed in; and I think Mike's experience with Cat

Sign Up for Snowmobile/OHRV Safety Classes CONCORD, N.H. - Winter is just a few months away, and snowmobile/OHRV education classes are underway across the state. To operate a snowmobile or Off-Highway Recreational Vehicle (OHRV) in New Hampshire, any person age 12 or older must have either a valid Motor Vehicle Driver's License or have successfully completed an approved OHRV/Snowmobile Safety Education class taught by volunteer instructors and staff trained by the NH Fish and Game Department. Additionally, all children under the age of 14 must be accompanied by a licensed adult when operating

a snowmobile or OHRV, unless they are on property belonging to their parents, grandparents or guardians. Sign up soon if you or someone you know needs a class. There is no charge for traditional classes, which are usually completed in a single day. For a current class schedule, visit www.wildnh. com/ohrv/education.html. New classes are added as they become available. Traditional classroom OHRV and Snowmobile safety education courses, taught by 150 Fish and Game-certified volunteer instructors and Regional Coordinators, are available statewide at no charge.

As an alternative to the traditional courses, participants have the option of completing the safety training online for a fee of $29.50. “The online courses provide a convenient opportunity for students to become educated online, at their own pace, while learning key safety information we find important for riding both OHRVs and snowmobiles,” said Captain John Wimsatt, OHRV/Snowmobile Education and Law Enforcement coordinator for NH Fish and Game. “The course uses video, animations and more to teach valuable lessons and emphasize the importance of respecting landowners and private property, and is also a

helpful option for people who may have difficulty getting to a traditional class.”

Many of the trained volunteer

instructors are affiliated with one

of the more than 100 snowmobile

clubs in New Hampshire. “Joining a snowmobile club is a great way

to learn about safe riding, help

support local landowners and help maintain trails for your own

and others' enjoyment,” Wimsatt said.

In addition to safety education, this winter Fish and Game Conservation Officers will be out on the trails conducting patrols to detect and apprehend impaired snowmobile operators, enforce speed limits, deter unlawful off-trail riding and detect machines with modified exhaust. These ongoing initiatives will help to keep the state's snowmobile trails safe for all outdoor enthusiasts during the upcoming season. ❄

Join A Snowmobile Club Today, Because Membership Has Privileges By John Prusak, Snow Goer Magazine, October 21, 2015

D

Join For The Camaraderie One great reason to join a snowmobile club is that you’ll surround yourself with likeminded people. Hanging out with fellow snowmobilers is fun – it immediately expands your riding circle and puts you in touch with people who have similar experiences and interests.

Join a snowmobile club today! Snowmobile clubs host club rides, organize fundraisers and hold social events. You’ll find yourself participating in those big trailside weenie roasts, summer picnics and early-season trail opener gatherings that you’ve read about in magazines or seen on posters. Most clubs even make monthly board meetings fun – before and after the formal meeting, it becomes a social event where riders get together, swap stories, make riding plans and enjoy each other’s company. Club membership expands your riding circle. If you have a free day, you can almost always find somebody to ride with – dozens of other enthusiasts are just an email, a social media post or a phone call away. Also, sometimes there are monetary benefits to club membership, including discounts

on lodging, trail passes, insurance and more.

Join To Help Out Intrinsically you know it: Snowmobile trails don’t just appear like magic. And that person who drives the big rig through the woods and pulls the drag? He isn’t the Groomer Fairy, he’s often a club member or was hired by a club. While it’s true that in some locations government agencies do some of the grooming, the vast majority of the trail network is created, maintained, signed and groomed by snowmobile club members. That results in a lot of work and, at times, a lot of fun if you like being outside with friends. In areas where snowmobile trails cross private land, club members must appeal to each land owner whose property the trail crosses each year and get them to sign a land lease. Then in the fall, club members go out and prepare those trail corridors. It can be as simple as posting the trail signs and trimming back overgrown brush or downed trees, or as complex as bringing in heavy equipment to rebuild a trail base or build a bridge across a stream. Repairs are sometimes needed in the winter, and then the signs have to come out in the spring All of this is quite a chore, but brushing trails and posting signs can also be a lot of fun. And, as you were told when you were a child, “many hands make light work.” If you can even help maintain a simple 3-mile section of trail, you will have helped the cause, put in some good, positive sweat equity and can claim it as your own when you ride on it this winter. Most snowmobile clubs also host youth safety training courses, lobby local and state officials for trail or backcountry access, participate in charity events and spread goodwill throughout their community. They maintain grooming equipment and insurance for the trails and train the groomer drivers.

Join Because It’s The Right Thing To Do While being a volunteer who attends meetings, chairs events or pounds signs into the ground every fall is what every snowmobile club needs, at the very least write out a check and mail it with a

membership form to join a club where you ride. And do it every year. Big membership numbers help lobbyists who work on behalf of snowmobilers. There truly is strength in numbers. Clubs are also influential for

establishing new trails and preserving existing trails because clubs often get businesses – which are powerful in communities – to jump on board. So, even if you’re not a “joiner,” despise attending meetings or don’t have time at this point in

your life to help out or attend the various social events, sign up because it’s the right thing to do. To locate a snowmobile club where your ride – see page 35 Your sport needs you, now more than ever. ❄

o you belong to a snowmobile club? It seems like a simple enough question – a yes-or-no answer would suffice. Yet too many people either B.S. their way through the answer or come up with an excuse as to why they don’t just sign up and do their duty. If you’re one of those people, this article isn’t intended to scold because you’re certainly not alone. Though no official industry numbers are available, it is estimated that fewer than 25 percent of all North American snowmobilers belong to the clubs and associations that secure the land access, put in the trails and then groom and maintain them all winter, among other things. Hopefully that knowledge doesn’t give you an excuse to stay on the sidelines but rather inspires you to become part of the solution. There are many reasons to join a snowmobile club – and many different levels of engagement among those members.

Did You Know Info About Camp Sno-Mo By Robert Kelly

The partnership of the NHSA and its members with Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo spans over forty years and during that time the NHSA and its members have raised over a staggering $2.8 million dollars.

During this time Camp Sno-Mo has served well over four thousand campers with special needs and their families.

All TEN New Hampshire Counties are represented and served at camp.

Camp Sno-Mo serves youths aged 11-21 from all often the NH counties as well as its neighboring states.

Thanks to the NHSA and NHFG, camp continues to hold its annual fishing derby day each year during the regular camping season during session 4.

Thanks to generous donations our campers have a specialized water wheelchair making entering and exiting the waterfront area a lot more accessible for those using a wheelchair.

Camp Sno-Mo recently purchased an all-terrain vehicle that we use to transport our campers to the program areas they previously may not have ever seen and more importantly in the unfortunate event there is a medical situation, we now have a more reliable form of transport.

Camp Sno-Mo once again enjoyed consistent numbers serving approx. 120 co-ed campers this past summer, resulting in a wait list being created.

While at camp, campers can select from a list of activities and program areas typically associated with a traditional summer camp. These include but are not limited to, Aquatics Shooting sports, Scout craft, fishing, hiking, access to high & low and ropes course, Ecology, Kick/volley ball and camp fires etc.

In order to accommodate the waiting list camp Sno-Mo enjoyed this past summer, we are looking at ways we can increase the number of beds available each session in the lodge building. Moving from 15-17 campers up to a possible 18-22 each session.

Camp Sno-Mo also has a tent site which offers our campers the chance to sleep under the stars, just like regular campers at Hidden Valley (Boy Scouts).

Your NHSA club/county may use the lodge building during the off season. (per availability)

If you or your club/county would like additional information regarding camp Sno-Mo or to get further involved with anything we are doing please do not hesitate in contacting me. At the same time if you feel it would be advantageous to have camp Sno-Mo representation at a meeting or fund raising event please contact Robert directly at rkelly@eastersealsnh.org or Phone: 603 986 9464 (c) or 603 364 5818 (camp) Fax: 603 364 0230.

Grass Drags Recap W

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

OW! Were you one of the 46,500 who attended the 2015 NHSA Race Into Winter Grass Drags and Water Cross this year? We sure did have a record crowd; there were over 26,000 just on Saturday alone! It takes a whole year of planning & preparation to ready the 270 acres we use on Peterson’s farm to transform it into a spectacular 3 day event that draws racers & spectators from all across the states & from Canada as well. Whether you were a spectator, racer, or vendor-we thank you for being part of it! Over the summer, the grass track was rebuilt. New clay was trucked in and laid down, and NEGDS (New England Grass Drags Series) and the racers were quite happy with the results. They found it very smooth and the fastest speed recorded for the weekend was 117.92. We also removed the old trailer at the starting line, and extended the

bridge to remove congestion there which aided in getting race heats off more efficiently. The old NHSA trailer has been put to use as the new announcer’s booth on the pit side of the track. Also new for this year was a set of real bleachers! A small crew worked feverishly to erect them in time for the weekend, and they worked great! At 60’ long, with seven rows of seats, a lot of people were able to enjoy the races from a great vantage point. The grass races were cancelled Friday night due to the rain, but the Eastern Water Cross Association ran their races and entertained those who did brave the weather. Attendance was down a bit on Friday, but the rain and wind cleared for Saturday & Sunday, and the cars kept coming in. The vendors were ready, and reported record sales again this year. When they left Sunday night, they were extremely happy & looking forward to next year already. The adrenaline junkies

that make up Rave X put on a spectacular show again this year, joined by Heath Frisbee, the X games medalist. The Snow Cross chip track saw some action with their racers putting on some exhibition “races”, and even the little ones got involved on their 120 sleds. New for this year was a “kid fun zone” with a 120 oval track, and the rock climbing wall & bungee…………..the kids and their parents loved it! There are many vendors & businesses that donate equipment pre & post event, as well as during it. We are very grateful for these relationships, and for what they are able to provide us with. I had the good fortune to work with an incredible committee once again. The team consisted of Jena Hayes, Jason Roache, Nelly Roache, Gail Hanson, Chris Hanson, Vic Henry, Brian Philpott, Roland Martin, Keith Monmaney, Leon Nelson, Stephanie Nelson & Bill Bolton. Kevin Yelle jumped in at the last minute to round it out!

There are so many others who volunteered and worked hard to make this year such a success, and your efforts are also very much appreciated! Security, admissions, parking, food, site, safety, track-all these positions are staffed by an incredible bunch of people! The team work that was displayed by all throughout the event was truly amazing. I am proud to have worked with you all, and thank you from the bottom of my heart!

I also want to thank Roger Wright for his guidance throughout the year; his passion for the race is infectious to all who know him! And of course we could not do this without the cooperation of the town of Fremont; its residents, the Peterson's, Raymond ambulance, Fremont fire, and the Fremont police-especially Sgt. Jason Larochelle!! Great job everyone! Evelyn Ferrell 2015 Race Into Winter Chair ❄

SnoStreakers, Inc. PO Box 780 Meredith, NH 03253 www.sno-streakers.com Tom Hughes, Secretary As our season begins, let’s take note of what a “Snowmobile Club” does between seasons. Over the summer there was a lot of vehicle maintenance on groomers and machines to properly put them up awaiting the fall demand. In August the Sno-Streakers set up our Annual Sno-cone booth at the Meredith Chamber of Commerce Fine Arts & Crafts weekend. This year we sold popcorn again and it was a hit with many kids and adults. The weather was great but the crowds were less than expected. Volunteers manned the booth for the two day event and netted well needed funds for our club. In September we began our annual trail maintenance. Volunteers meet at Meredith McDonalds at 8 a.m. (until about noon) each Sunday morning to set out to cut, trim, and de-boulder our trails in and around Meredith. The club provides the equipment, you supply the manpower. We have over 35 miles of trails to maintain, so it takes a lot of volunteer hours to get them ready for snowtraveling this winter. Come lend a hand on Sunday and join the efforts put forth by our club to keep snowmobiling fun in the Lakes Region. Our 2004 Tucker 1000 groomer

is out for repair. In its 11 years of trail maintenance and grooming it has some rust issues, before they become a hazard to our crew, we are taking care of it with a full on rework. The club will definitely have to do more fund raising projects this year to offset the costs of the Tucker repair. Club meetings are open to the entire club. Come join us on the second Tuesday of the month and find out how you can help make our club stronger. It is an all-volunteer club, designed to make Snowmobiling in the Lakes Region a fun family sport. Why sit around all winter wondering when the snow will go away, come join us on the trails. Snowmobiling is a great winter activity for anyone. We will start planning our annual Holiday/Christmas Party for after the holidays again this year. It seems that everyone is so busy with family and work parties that we have opted to have our fun after the holidays are over. Our Yankee Swap is always interesting as some items are re-gifted presents not really needed or wanted from the Holiday prior. Come join the fun, watch your emails for meeting dates and locations. See you on the trails

Mountain Meadow Riders Snowmobile Club PO Box 342 Conway, NH 03818 www.mmrsc.net Facebook.com/MMRSCNH Clem Paquette, President As I write this article, the foliage is starting to show its colors and the Fryeburg Fair is in full swing. The temperatures are cooling and we are getting ready for the snow to fly soon! While we wait, our Trail Master, Colin Preece, and his team of volunteers are organizing work parties to prepare the trails for winter. If you are interested in joining the team, call Colin at 603662-7790. The hard work often ends with a great cookout. Is your sled looking a little tired and worn out? We are once again holding a raffle for a brand new Ski-Doo MXZ! There are a limited number of tickets, so buy yours early so you don’t miss out! The Ski-Doo is on display at Profile Powersports so check it out and purchase your ticket right there. While you are there, get some new gear at a discount with the great program Profile has for our club members. Check out the details on our website, www.mmrsc.net. By the time this article is printed, you should be able to purchase raffle tickets on our website. One of our club map sponsors, Abenaki Trail Restaurant and Pub, is giving a $5 gift certificate for each raffle ticket purchased. We look forward to seeing you at our annual bonfire in February to celebrate when the winning ticket is drawn! If you have not yet renewed your membership, the easiest and quickest way is to go to our website and click “Join Our Club” right on the home page. After filling out the information and submitting payment, you will be emailed your NHSA Membership Voucher for you to print and take when you register your sleds. Submitted by: Dave George Happy Fall to everyone, the leaves are changed and trail work is in full swing. We had a great weekend at the grass drags and thank you to everyone who worked

their butts off to make it another success. Sean you did a great job making it happen. We could have had a few more volunteers but we still have a great bunch that get it done. Friday was rainy but still had a decent attendance. Saturday and Sunday were crazy busy and we sold out of most of our stock. It was nice to see Eugene visit and help out while taking a break from physical therapy. Hard work is always good therapy. Our Thanksgiving meeting has always been a real big night at the clubhouse and this year will be no different. Saturday November 21st. at 6pm for some tasty turkey. Please check the website/ Facebook page for more details and what to bring for side dishes. As always we are in need of more help for various things. If trail work is not your thing, we need repairs to the clubhouse and there is always maintenance for equipment. If you want to get involved with a great group of people, contact any one of us and we will get you there. Soon it will be snowing and the fun begins, until then we have a lot to do. Thanks and happy trails!

Seven Lakes Snowmobile Club PO Box 311 East Wakefield, NH 03830 sevenlakessnowmobileclub.com Submitted by Bob Lundgren In Wakefield we’ve yet to see our first frost but what typically happens is that winter will suddenly be upon us. In the meantime preparations are underway for the next snowmobile season. Once the season is underway and there is enough snow to groom our two Tucker Sno Cats will be put into service. One will be stationed at the club building in East Wakefield to do our “north” trails and the other in the Sanbornville/ Brookfield area to do the “south”. The big news for the “south” trails is that we have acquired a “new” 2009 Tucker. This will make life easier for our groomer operators and will result in better riding conditions. In addition to the two Tuckers we have several smaller grooming machines to take care of feeder trails and touchup. These are all driven and maintained by volunteers. No one is paid to do this. We continue to work on trails and bridges to get them ready for the 2015/2016 season. Our Kubota continues to be a big help in getting to those out-of-the way areas quickly. If you want to get in on the action, contact one of our two trailmasters. For more details

contact Chuck Waleik (north) and Doug Labree (south). Their e-mail addresses are as follows: cwaleik@roadrunner.com and dlabree@aol.com and they can tell you what you can do to help. Several of our members participated in our annual fundraiser by working at the NASCAR events in July and September and the Grass Drags in October. These have been an extremely important source of revenue, but we need more members to get on board to help with this. In order to meet our personnel quota for any given race day we are not getting enough of our own members to step up so we are sharing the work and revenue with other organizations. Several of our members, especially the older ones, are putting in multiple days. With our large membership I KNOW there are many more who could help. (Feeling guilty yet?). We need all the financial assistance we can get and these are our best fundraisers. The amount of benefit from these events is huge compared to the effort expended. It’s not hard work but it does require giving up a day which is a small price to pay for more winter fun! As you read this read this, please bear in mind that our next plea for volunteer won’t come until late next Spring so please join us then! Not all purchases of grooming equipment are subsidized by the Grant-in-Aid program Maintenance and repairs to our grooming equipment are our responsibility. In fact our latest Tucker purchase was made with our own funds derived from dues, groomer fund donations and a substantial bank loan but no grant from the Bureau of Trails was provided. By the time you read this, you will have received your club membership renewal application. It’s important that you respond promptly for two main reasons: 1) We need the money (besides dues, please consider a generous groomer fund donation) and 2) You need the proof of membership documents to get the registration club discount. Give our Secretary a break by spreading out her work load and so you won’t miss any riding early in the season. The temperature this morning was 37 degrees. That’s the coldest I’ve seen so far in Wakefield though the foliage is quite subdued so far, perhaps due to the warm September. However, remember last year we had significant snow on October 29th, so get your machine ready! Continued on page 24

Ahh…nothing like that crisp October air to get the thoughts of ribbons of white trails in your mind. This months article is very special; the WSC awarded one of our wonderful and original landowners a plaque of gratitude the history of which you will find very interesting in the feature below. A big thank you to our club secretary Heather Nelson for taking the time to compile the history of the WSC Snack Shack. First though, I must slip in an apology to two of our club officers. In my excitement to get the first Sno-Traveler article in on time, (I was a month early after all that) - I reversed two of the top officers. Corrected, it is: President: Tom Willand Vice President: Larry Jean Both of these gentlemen have given tirelessly to the WSC, and are quite the dynamic duo. Sorry for the mix-up fellas! Now, on to the feature of this months article: The History of the Wolfeboro Snowmobile Club Snack Shack For those of you who have never visited, the Wolfeboro Snowmobile Club's Snack Shack sits humbly at the bottom of a hill at the trail junction of Corridor 26 and Primary 200 (along the power lines, off of Mountain Road) in Center Tuftonboro. You can see it on Google Earth, or on Google Maps, if you know where to look. The Snack Shack began its life as a bunkhouse at a summer camp. It was then donated to the WSC in 1998. Landowners, Norman and Nancy Vittum, long-time supporters of WSC's trails, offered to house it on their property. It was carefully transported; then, it officially became the WSC Snack Shack. The Snack Shack had over a decade of success, dedicatedly manned by Diane Willand and a very loyal small crew of helpers. However, a lack of volunteers eventually made it impossible to keep open, and it sat idle, quiet in the woods, for almost two years (2013-2014). However, with an increase in willing and enthusiastic volunteers, the Snack Shack opened again last year, and we had a fantastic season! So many people expressed their

SNO-TRAVELER

excitement and gratitude in seeing it open again. The WSC, its members, and all of those who have visited the Shack would like to express our deepest appreciation of the Vittum's longstanding and continued support of the WSC, not only for allowing us to use their land for the Snack Shack, but also for allowing us to use their land for our trails. On February 21, 2015, the officers of WSC presented Mrs. Vittum a memorial plaque for her husband, Norman, who passed away on December 18, 2013. Norman's plaque now resides next to his son’s plaque (Normie Vittum 1957 – 1970). The plaques hang above the door of the Snack Shack. The Snack Shack is unique (to say the least), in that it literally is in the woods and does not have electricity. Instead, its lights, heat, 4-burner range, and refrigerator are all run on propane. The Snack Shack is now manned primarily by me, and my husband (John & Heather Nelson). We were happy to have several volunteers assist us last year, and hope to continue to have volunteers this season so we can have another awesome year! The Shack is open weekends, and sometimes mid-week during vacations (weather permitting) from 10:00am - 3:00pm. Last year, the Shack offered two warm daily homemade specials, as well as hot dogs, PB&Js, and grilled sandwiches. In addition, to cold and hot drinks, a variety of snacks and homemade bakery items were also available. Most Saturdays, we had a bonfire going outside that many really seemed to enjoy. The Snack Shack even has its own Facebook page! "Like" it to get updates on daily specials, hours/ closings, and to stay updated on events or better yet; to volunteer to help out! Many of the visitors last year expressed a desire to have more activities and events this year, and we listened! Stay tuned for future details regarding the possibility of ‘The First Annual Devin Ness Memorial Poker Run’ which will be discussed at our next meeting. Please visit our website: www.wolfeborosnowmobileclub. com/ or our Facebook Page for trail conditions and news on upcoming events! We meet @ 7pm the 2nd Tues. of each month at the Windrifter; N. Main St., Wolfeboro.

Colebrook Ski-Bees PO Box 125 Colebrook, NH 03576 www.colebrookski-bees.com Submitted by: Ken Herchenroder The fall season is a very busy time of the year for most snowmobile clubs. With trail preparation activities and fund raising, the club volunteers are working very hard to get ready for the season ahead. This fall several trail work activities are in progress including work on the Cree notch bridge and stump removal on other trails as well as some key new kiosks. I don't want to forget to mention our groomer coordinator, Ronnie and Bob for all the time spent getting our groomer fleet ready for the season. Thanks to all of you that were at the "Race Into Winter" Grass Drags and Water Cross in Fremont for your support buying food from the SkiBees cook shack. Also very special thanks to all of the volunteers that helped with serving and preparing food for this 3 day event. It was great seeing everyone, and thanks to those that purchased a membership from us. The money from these activities goes to keeping our trail system open, well signed and as safe as possible for you and your families. Those of you that are Ski-Bees or wanna-Bees that have time to help, check our web site, or facebook page for our volunteer needs and other ways that you can help. A NEW date change is that our monthly membership meeting will

be moving again to the second Thursday of the month starting on November 12th at the Colebrook Country Club. The Ski-Bees will be offering an OHRV snowmobile safety class on Saturday December 5th which is a great time to get the kids ready for a safe season. Last but not least by any means we had our landowner/volunteer appreciation dinner on October 17. A good time was had by everyone. Our sport would not exist if not for our landowners and the volunteers that make the club work. Don't forget to join a club where you ride.

Pittsburg Ridge Runners 17 Dickson Lane Pittsburg, NH 03592 www.pittsburgridgerunners.org Curt Shaw, President Greetings, As we move into fall and look forward to the new season, work on trails becomes foremost in our minds. Most of the work is accomplished during the next two months. We anticipate that work to repair trails 143 and 136 that were damaged due to logging last year will commence soon. This should restore trail 143 between trail 137 and 112 (Magalloway). We received notice from one of our landowners that he and others are closing the section of Corridor 20 that includes the bridge over Indian Stream to protest the planned installation of towers across Tabor Notch by Northern Pass. We will thus not have access to Corridor 20 below Indian Stream Road. We will have to use trail 128 through Clarksville or trail 21 to 21A to access Stewartstown and Canaan. Logging continues on Indian Stream Road in the north. The trail closures will remain the same as last year. We will still have access to the Melvina Loop via Corridor 20 as it is before the Indian Stream closure. We held our landowner/ volunteer dinner on October 3rd at the Spa in West Stewartstown. There were approximately 30 people in attendance. The meal was delicious and the conversation lively. We hope to continue this event yearly to thank all those who

make our trails possible. Happy Trails!

Swift Diamond Riders 978 Diamond Pond Road Stewartstown, NH 03576 www.swiftdiamondriders.com 237-5845 Vicky Schmartz, Secretary Summer started off slowly here in the North Country but gained speed in August. Now that October is near an end, most of the leaves are gone. . We know what lies just around the corner, winter! We had our annual club meeting on August 22 with election of officers. Tim Anderson, President, Brad Gaudreault, board of director. Helen Rogers is our new Treasurer and Mike Smith is our Trail Master. Welcome aboard! We had a good meeting with about 25 members in attendance. We received a lot of great suggestions by members on how we can promote our club as well as advertising. Thank you. Keep the suggestions coming!! We had rounded off the day with a barbecue. Burgers, dogs, pasta and potato salad, corn, and apple crisp. Hats off the Vinnie Finnegan for grilling up the feast! Our website www. swiftdiamondriders.com has been redesigned. New items have been added. Check it out and let us know how you like it. We will be scheduling a work party for bridge work and some trail work. Check the website and Facebook for dates and times. We can always use the extra help. We had a great weekend at the NHSA “Race Into Winter” Grass Drags & Water Cross down in Fremont, NH. We sold memberships and had our new clothing line on display. Thanks to everyone who stopped by the booth.

We estimated we sold around 1100 cheeseburgers on Saturday alone it amazes me how busy we are from 11AM right thru 6PM that night a huge thank you to everyone who came down to help staff the food

concessions, helped get the trailers ready back at the clubhouse, and all the people involved with purchasing the food, delivering trailers and getting them back to Errol. I would also like to thank all the people who came and supported our efforts by purchasing our food and drinks. I hope you realize how important you are to our success as a club we have very little income between now and January and yet we have substantial expenditures to get groomers ready and to complete several bridges before the snow flies, without your sausage purchases we would not be able to get many of these projects completed. As a review of future meetings it looks like most members would like to have a meeting on the Friday after Thanksgiving this is not our usual timeframe but we want to have as many club members at the meetings as possible and the consensus was a lot of members would be up at camp etc. for the Thanksgiving weekend and it would be a good time to have the meeting. We have other projects to complete this fall besides the couple of bridges that need to be redecked and we will be working on them most weekends if you have spare time and want to help out swing by the club house on Saturday more helping hands are always appreciated. Have a great fall hopefully we will see you on the trails soon

Joining early helps us to cover the costs of various trail projects and trail maintenance before snow flies and ensures you receive your NHSA voucher in time to register your snowmobiles. As highlighted in the last issue of SnoTraveler, there has been much confusion over the NHSA’s new voucher system. By the beginning of the New Year, you will be able to join NH clubs online through the NHSA’s new portal. For this season, however, we are recommending that you fill out a membership form (available on our website) and mail it to us. We will then promptly send you your NHSA voucher and club membership card which will serve as proof of joining a club. With

PAGE 25

this proof you can then register your snowmobiles at a registration station at the discounted NHSA club member rate. It is with great dismay to inform you that there is likelihood that an essential section of PT117 between Stark and Groveton, as well as a few other trails in Coӧs County, will be closed indefinitely until deals are worked out with landowners. Many landowners in the North Country are expressing their opposition to the controversial proposed Northern Pass project by closing OHRV trails on their property. This was spurred by the decision of Ride the Wilds to apply for funds from Northern Pass/Eversource. The Ride the Wilds board has since returned the funds and has stated it is to remain politically neutral. Although this trail is not a part of WMRR territory, it has served as a vital East/West link between Berlin and Groveton. This is unfortunate; however landowners have every right to express opposition or support for a cause by closing off their land. With bad news comes some good news; In trail work news, we are still pushing to replace the trestle bridge on PT108 in Berlin and hope to have the new bridge completed by mid to late November. Please watch our website or Facebook page for trail work announcements and dates. As always, we can use all the help we can get and would like to see new faces as well as familiar ones. Also, keep an eye out for some upcoming maintenance work including inspection of trails and preparing firewood for the clubhouse and warming hut. Lastly, I’d like to take a moment to encourage our club members to attend our monthly meetings. Meetings are held on the first Tuesday of every month at 7pm at the clubhouse. Meeting reminders will be posted on our website at least a week in advance. Active club members are what make this club possible. There are many ways to contribute including: attending meetings, joining us for trail work days, or volunteering at one of our fundraising events such as the Steak Feed. Hopefully, as winter approaches, we’ll have some better news to share with you all as well as trail work progress. Hope to see you all on the trails! Continued on page 26

Hello Snowmobilers: Well, the summer sure has flown by! Hard to believe it is already time to get the trails and machines ready for another great season. What we really need are some more volunteers to help get things going. Not only for the beginning of the season, such as trail and bridge work, we need more people to GET INVOLVED! We are looking for others to help with upcoming functions. The club held its last regular monthly meeting on Tuesday evening, September 1, 2014. Regular club business was discussed and voted upon. We really need more of the members to join in! Come on by, the meetings are very informal. Bring in some fresh ideas and enthusiasm! GTB meetings are held on the first Tuesday of the month, running from September until April in the GTB Club House. We all hope more of you can be there! There is a MAJOR CHANGE coming up starting January 1, 2016 with club membership dues. All clubs belonging to NHSA are going to be required to join through NHSA. You have until December 31, 2015 to join the Groveton Trailblazers for the same fee of $20.00 we have offered for years. Starting January 1, 2016 the cost will be going up to $35.00 and be that price going forward. We are encouraging everyone to join prior to January this year at the $20.00 price. You can find our membership form on our web-site and print it/mail it in, or you can join there on-line. We have received information that there will be a major trail closed that most of Trail 117 will be closed to all snowmobiling and ATVs going forward. We will continue to groom to the junction

Baker River Valley Snowmobile Club PO Box 122 Wentworth, NH 03282 www.mybrvsc.org By Jayne McCullock I am sitting in my back yard on a beautiful fall day, 60+ degrees outside, slight breeze blowing and I’m looking at a snowmobile trailer just waiting to be opened again. I can’t believe I am already thinking about getting ready for the snowmobile season and it’s only October. I hope everyone has received their membership applications, either by mail or by email. If you haven’t received your application in the mail and would like one, just let us know by contacting us at the email address listed below. Please make sure you fill them out and send them back. This season brings many changes to the New Hampshire snowmobile community. We have the new club registration system that was kicked off during the summer. It has been working well. We have already started entering members into the system and many members should have already received their new vouchers for the 2015-2016 season. I have been emailing the vouchers to everyone that has paid their dues. Please contact us if you have any trouble opening or printing your new voucher.

We can also send them to you in the mail if you need. Also, please keep an eye open for your NHSA decals that you will receive in the mail. With each voucher I have been sending out, I have been including a quick thank you and a note reminding you about attending the meetings. We want everyone to know that all are welcome to attend the monthly meetings. These meetings are where all the activities are planned. We can really use input from all members in helping us come up with new ideas. We really do hope that you can find the time to attend a meeting and get to know your fellow snowmobilers in the club. Also new this season, we have a new email address for the club. The email address is – Bakerriverclub@gmail.com. And as always, you can find us on Facebook and on our webpage at www.mybrvsc.org. Please keep an eye on these pages for upcoming work dates to start clearing the trails and prepping the clubhouse for the upcoming season. We really your need help this year with getting all the work completed. We hope you can all find just a little time to volunteer and join in. Also, just as a quick reminder, our own President Evelyn is Chairing the “Race into Winter” Grass Drags and Water Cross again this year. The event is being held October 9th – 11th, at Peterson’s Brookvale Farm in Fremont, NH. BRVSC sends a few club members to work the grass drags every year; it’s a great fundraiser for us, and a good time! Check out the website for information on volunteering for our club, and camping information as well as prices, times, directions and much more; www.nhgrassdrags.com. We hope to see you there. Stop in and say hello to Ev, you may even get to see her bright green sneakers. See you soon, and it’s never too early to “Think Snow”.

Bridgewater Mountain Snowmobile Club PO Box 368 New Hampton, NH 03256 www.bridgewatermtnsmc.org BMSC is in great shape for the season; we replaced a rusted-out muffler on the groomer, we’ve bush-hogged the trails, removed some stones here and there, and we’ve spent countless hours trimming trees back to improve line-of-sight for our riders and groomer operators. The BMSC board is ready too! We’re proud to say have some new faces on Board

FALL 2015

this year and our new volunteers are avid snowmobilers just like you. Please welcome Michael Phillips, Steve Berube, Jonah Daigle (Trail Administrator), and our new Secretary, Pam Schofield who is ready to receive and process your Club Membership. All we need is snow! Speaking of Club Memberships, there is some fuss around the online system and how things are working this year. We can say that despite the NHSA system, we have our own system up and running. We have kept our traditional mail-in form that you get off our website. You can also sign up in person the old way at Outdoor Performance and Newfound Grocery in Bridgewater and also at Ashland Lumber in Ashland. Your membership will provide you with a Membership Card that will allow you to register your sleds in NH at a discount. Despite the “fuss” around the new online system, please know that we will embrace the new online system once we know it functions as we expect. And we will endeavor to make joining our club easy like it always has been as we greatly appreciate your membership. That membership support is what keeps the groomer going at 2am making those trails enjoyable for your snowmobiling adventures. We will always look to earn your membership renewals through our grooming efforts and communication with members during the season. It would help the club immensely if we earned your Club Membership renewal now, before winter, to help with the expenses we incur before the season even starts. We greatly appreciate any extra donation for the grooming fund as well! Last season we received positive feedback from our members about our trail reports and weather conditions. We will continue provide timely updates to you through our website, Facebook, and now on Twitter at @BMSCgroomer. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for quick updates. We love hearing from you! Please provide feedback anytime during the year and always know that the Club operates through a group of dedicated volunteers that welcomes your participation. You can message us through Facebook or send us an email through the website. Our monthly club meetings are at the Newfound Grocery Store in Bridgewater on the 1st Saturday of the month at 7pm. All are welcome to attend the meetings, hear what’s

going on, and meet other members who love snowmobiling and enjoy the trails just like you. All clubs exist because someone volunteers their time; we hope to see you soon!

Hardy Country Snowmobile Club PO Box 43 Hebron, NH 03241 hardycountrysnowmobileclub@ yahoo.com hardycountrysnowmobileclub.net Submitted by: Jennifer Lloyd Thank you to all that attended out annual cookout on September 12th! We had a beautiful day at the Stata residence. Our first meeting of the year was also held; one of the key topics was the club meeting. Due to low member attendance and the increased communication with social media, it was decided to trial quarterly club meetings for the next year, with officers’ meetings as needed throughout the year. Since the first meeting was in September, that puts us on track for a schedule of December, March, and June for the meeting months. They will still be the second Saturday of these months at 7 pm at the Hebron Community Hall (lower level of the Hebron Church). We will continue to maintain a high level of communication with our members via email, Facebook, and the website to ensure everyone is up to date with what’s happening! Hardy Country Snowmobile Club won First Place in the parade at Groton’s Old Home Day! We received a trophy and $25 in prize money for our treasury. Thanks to all those that voted for us! For the most up to date and frequent communication about trail work, meetings, snow forecasts, grooming operations, and trail conditions please like us on Facebook! Sunday morning Work Parties have resumed. This year’s focus is on maintenance of the groomers and the new trail re-route. Updates on weekly projects, including time and location, will be on Facebook, on the website, and via email. If you are not electronically inclined but would like to be involved, please let us know so we can find another way to communicate plans with you!

Lisbon Stump Jumpers PO Box 142 Lisbon, NH 03561 www.lisbonstumpjumpers.org Submitted by: Cheryl Wiggett Yes I did submit an article for the Early Fall edition, but mine was one of the few that got lost before publication. Last year this happened to me too. I told Gail I was a jinx! For those of you

for whom I have an email, I did forward the article that would have appeared in that issue. We were busy during the spring and summer with non trail events. Held our Annual Landowner Appreciation Dinner, entered floats in Lisbon and Bath parades, set up at the Lisbon Art Festival and a day at the Littleton Farmers Market, and held a fund raiser dinner at the Landaff Old Home Day. By time of this publication we will have had another meeting that I will not be able to attend. Minutes of our meetings are available on our web site. Reminder: A Fresh Thanksgiving Turkey is being donated by the Wiggett’s. Chances to be the recipient of this turkey are available from the Wiggett’s and other members. Hopefully many of you will support this fundraiser. The turkey will be ready by on Saturday November 21st. Member ships will be available at several sites again this year. We thank the businesses that sell memberships and do OHRV registrations. Locally they include: Absolute PowerSports of VT, The Brick Store, Swiftwater Way Station, DU-EZ and Littleton Motor Sports. Maps of our trail system are also available at these sites as well as P&D Sunoco. We continue to have our meetings on the 2nd Thursday of each month. We are alternating a meeting with snacks with a meeting at a local restaurant each month. As with all organizations, membership involvement is essential. We would like to have more social interaction – ideas for club rides or events that you may enjoy. We are always looking for ideas. Please leave comments on our Web site or contact one of the officers or directors. At our last meeting we voted to purchase a cutter bar for the groomer. This will help with trail grooming by cutting limbs less than 2 inches wide. Rob is VERY excited about the purchase. We still need people power to remove trees and branches larger that than that diameter. HINT HINT – please volunteer for trail work events!. The Vintage Snowmobile Race has a new date: February 13, 2016. We are hoping for better snow coverage and more moderate temperatures than we received in January. Contact Joe Wiggett at josephawiggett@gmail.com if you want to be involved or have something to share. Happy Thanksgiving to all!

If anyone knows where we could purchase a Skandic, please email us at ClubCrew@ LittletonSnowmobileClub.com. We would like to have that up and running for the start of the season. Our meetings are being well attended and hope to see more people as the season gets into full swing. After all our meetings, snacks and drinks are enjoyed by the group, with some interesting trail stories being told. Check out our new Web Site at www. Mascoma Valley Snow Travelers

PO Box 307 Springfield, NH 03284 mascomavalleysnowtravelers.com Josh Worthen, President Hello fellow Snow Travelers, there is that old saying; “no news is good news.” Well sadly today the Mascoma Valley Snow Travelers have news. We have lost our dear friend, past president, and trail master Wesley Roberts. Wes served two terms as president and two terms as trail master, and was an outstanding member for over 30 of his 55 years on this planet. As a lifelong snowmobiler and family man, Wes devoted his time to riding, preparing the trails for riding, and raising his children to appreciate the sport as much as he did. Well… sometimes sugaring did take precedence over snowmobiling, but to this day I believe some of the sugar bushes he tapped way out there, was an excuse to combine snowmobiling and sugaring, which ain’t a bad thing! Sometimes, after a good boil, and the sap had stopped running, we all would go out riding and check out the moon up on the famous Aaron’s Ledge. During his years as trail master, he personally made sure the team of Skandic’s were ready to go, and when we traded in two of them for our beloved Tucker, he

was right there making sure it went smoothly. Heck, he even sawzalled his work shop door and header, just so we could make the Tucker fit when it needed maintenance and track repairs! Wes also coordinated major trail re-routes and bridge construction on the corridor and state forest properties we ride. His term as president was also very efficient as we paid off the Tucker loan 3 years ahead of schedule, and had enough in the till to hold several landowner appreciation dinners, or “suppers” as Wes and us local folk call them. I could write for hours and hours about all the stories and accomplishments Wes had with this club, but I won’t. Instead, please recall all the good times he had with you snowmobiling, grooming, cutting brush, or taking a break in the sugar house. If you’ve never had the honor of meeting him, but you have ridden our trails, you definitely have seen what a good man and hard worker he was. I am happy to report though; the officers of this club are going to do something special for Wes, just as we did for the late Larry Clarke. Hopefully by the time you read this, a decision will be made to its extent, and a dedication ceremony will be scheduled. Please like our Facebook page and stay up to date with us. From all the past, present and future members of the Mascoma Valley Snow Travelers, Wes Roberts, we will miss you forever, and you will never be forgotten.

Mt. Cardigan Snowmobile Club PO Box 203 Canaan, NH 03741 mtcardigansnowmobile.com Submitted by: Debbie Mason Wow that was a fast summer, once it warmed up it seemed to fly by. It has been a busy summer for our club. We sold the little ASV groomer so that we could buy a big BR-180 groomer that will better suit our trail grooming needs. We had a successful Canaan Old Home Days weekend thanks to everyone who donated food and beverages. Congratulations to, David Macilla, the winner of the cord of wood donated by Walter and Tina Buckwold. I can’t thank enough the following people who volunteered all weekend: Helen Rock and Tina Buckwold did a great job selling wood raffle tickets. Justin Montebianchi’s pulled pork was

awesome and his wife Dawn made an amazing dessert. Alice Sunnerburg made some delicious chili and corn bread, egg salad sandwiches and brownies. The Kondi family helped put together a float for the parade and volunteered all weekend at the cabin. Mark Ramono was able to get us hamburger and hotdog buns as well as bags of chips. I would also like to thank Bruce Sunnerburg and Keith Monmaney, Lisa Thompson and David Zani for all of their help. Without all of you the weekend would not have run so smoothly or been as much fun. We are looking forward to the grass drags coming up the first weekend in October and are excited to see what’s new for 2015! I hope that you all had a great summer and had a chance for some R &R. Remember one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the fall is to help your club get the trails ready for winter. Work details will begin Sunday mornings in mid September. We have lots to do before the season starts, we hope you can help. Hopefully the winter will bring us many blankets of snow and a long riding season. Please ride respectfully and responsibly

Twin State Trail Busters PO Box 858 Lebanon, NH 03766 twinstatetrailbusters@yahoo.com Submitted by: Tricia Hammond Greetings from Lebanon/Enfield! The leaves are just starting to turn and the weather is getting colder. Trail work has begun for the season. There is a pending re-route on the West Lebanon Loop this year. We had 2 neighboring landowners choose to close their property to snowmobiling. This highlights how important our landowners are to us. If you encounter a landowner, please slow down and give them a wave. It goes a long way in letting them know that you appreciate their generosity. Staying on marked trails and respecting their property also helps in keeping trails open. A huge thank you to Mark, Roger and crew for establishing the re-route, getting permissions, cutting trees/brush and all the hard work that goes into building/ maintaining a trail. They work tirelessly throughout the year with groomer operations, maintenance, etc. The list of tasks they accomplish in a year is amazing! Club meetings are held in the front room of the old Carter Community Building on the first Wednesday of the month @ 7pm from October to April. December and March meetings are potluck at the Marion Carter Home beginning at 6:30pm. December's potluck

Our last meeting was held on September 21 at the Little Grill in Littleton. Jena Hayes and Ev Ferrell did a training session for our club so we could work the Race into Winter Event on October 9-11. We will be sending several members down to work for the weekend. Thank you ladies for attending the meeting. Our condolences go out to Ev's truck. On the way home from our meeting, it had a fight with a bull moose in the notch and lost. The passengers were OK. The Trail crew has been getting into action. The first week of October we started putting in several gates. One gate consisted of two 8 foot telephone sections sunk into the ground 3 feet. They were place on an access road to the trail to keep the 4 wheelers out of the area. Two other metal swinging gates were placed in the same area on the road trail crossing. Steve and the boys have been busy in the "Rock Garden" with the excavator and hand tools. They did take some time off due to a busted pin on the tracks but are now back up and running. 1 bridge will be redecked and another one will be shored up later this month along the Moore Dam loop trail. We also have a crew led by Scott and Michelle along with some volunteer high school kids working on a new trail along the side of Mt Eustis. Mowing, by the state, has started on Corridor 5 from Littleton towards Lisbon. Once that is completed, they should be trimming the brush back going north from Littleton on the railroad tracks. If you have any free time to spare please send us an email and one of the trail crew will get back to you with meeting information. On October 4, the club had a booth at the Littleton Farmers Market. 2 mini-sleds were on display (thank you Doug) and several children told their parents that they were going to add them on their Christmas wish list! Parents, you are welcome. It was a bright sunny day and several people stopped by to check the location of the trails on our map. We are also in the planning stages of having a float in the Littleton Christmas Parade on Friday Nov 28. We have received some questions about membership renewals. We will be sending out

Hollis Nor’Easters Snowmobile Club monthly meetings are held on the second Tuesday of the month at 7:00 PM at the Lawrence Barn Community Center in Hollis. We try to limit our meetings to no more than 90 minutes, and would love to see you attend and let us know what is on your mind regarding snowmobiling. Several members of the Nor’Easters worked at the Grass Drags again this year. This was a lot of work, but also fun and we were happy to help out with all the effort it takes to put on this huge event. In addition to all the trail work we have been doing all summer, in October the Nor’Easters again participated in the Souhegan Valley Motorsports Open House along with a couple of our nearby sister clubs. Nor’Easters membership applications can be found on the club’s web site at www.noreasters. org. The new NHSA on-line membership process is working great, and we recommend that everyone renew their membership ASAP to get your registration voucher which you will need when you register your sleds. It is important to renew your membership early before snow flies so you can register your sleds and be ready to ride without having to deal with the last minute rush, long lines and dealers who may have run out of registration decals. The Nor’Easters annual multiclub pre-season BBQ/cookout will be on Saturday, November 7 with our friends in the Merrimack Sno-Buds, Wilton Lyndeborough Winter Wanderers and Brookline Icebreakers. This event is open to the public free of charge and everyone is welcome to attend. Our annual snowmobile safety course, including lunch, will be on Saturday, November 14 this year at the Lone Pine Hunters Club in Hollis. See our web site for details and to sign up. We would like to take this

opportunity to thank all our officers and directors who have made our club so successful. We would especially like to thank Sue Keough, our secretary who keeps you all informed as to what’s going on and who is the driving force behind our annual Pink Ride, which you will be hearing more about in future issues of the SnoTraveler. Also thanks to Jeanne and Doug Cleveland, our Membership Coordinator and Treasurer, who handle all our membership and financial responsibilities, Doug Sattler and Trevor Hardy, our President and Vice President who keep our club running smoothly, and Jon Lavoie who has done a great job keeping our web site up to date. A big thank you also to Dave Jennings, Trail Master, Jeff Peters, Trail Administrator, and Amos White, Assistant Trail Administrator who coordinate all our trail maintenance and improvement work, and grooming throughout the winter. Think snow and let’s hope the Farmers Almanac is right and we have a cold and snowy winter.

Hopefully everyone has thought about getting their sleds out to prepare for the season ahead. It’s easier to get the sleds cleaned up and started in cooler weather rather than in frigid temps that are inevitable! By the time this article comes out, we will have had our annual flea market. I’m sure it will be a huge success and that our new location will serve us well. A big thank you to all those who came out to help. We can never have enough volunteers for this event. A huge special thank you to Balboni Landscape Design for sponsoring our food shack and to Strong Beginnings Learning Center for sponsoring the dash plaques. Without our sponsors and those who make donations, we wouldn’t be able to put on this event. Of course, thank you to Bud Gordon for always coordinating this event too! Even though our Trail Administrator is down and out for a few weeks, he managed to work with his “team” (Steve Waldorf) to get the trails ready for the snow to fly. Additionally, he worked with our “tech guys” (Karl Towsley and his son Ethan) to get the GPS coordinates set for the trails in Goffstown. Our club meetings are the 2nd Monday of each month (September – May) and all are welcome to join

us! Don’t forget to check out our web page and Facebook page for updates and information!! November 11th is Veterans Day so PLEASE be sure to thank a veteran! We have a lot to be thankful for! Wishing you all a very happy and safe Thanksgiving!! “Keepin’ it under 60….

Andover Snowmobile Club PO Box 332 Andover,NH 03216-0332 andoversnowmobileclub.com. info@andoversnowmobileclub.com Submitted by: Allan Houle We are fast approaching winter and are excited to get back to some snowmobiling. We have been busy trimming, clearing, upgrading and signing our trails system and will be ready when Mother Nature decides to bless us with the white stuff. Many thanks to all that have worked so hard to get this work done. It is amazing how fast a forest trail is overtaken by the forest. Groomers are all services and ready for a good workout. We are also working toward getting our memberships changed over to the new online system. This system should be a benefit to us in the future with less yearly maintenance and re-entry of data. Please take advantage of this new system and if you have not already joined our club and wish to, please get your membership in by December 15 to take advantage of the current membership fee. Just a little bit longer and winter will be here. Have a safe and Happy Thanksgiving. The Andover Snowmobile Club meets the second Monday

Here in Snowslicker Nation we are busy as beavers getting the trails ready for another hopefully great season of riding down south. A big Thank You goes out to Paul for all his hard work on this project. More work parties at Bear Brook to come in the near future and you will be notified by e-mail blasts. Volunteers are needed and always welcome. A Trail work party will be taking place on November, 13th and we will be installing the snow fence by the Dam at Tower Hill Pond. We also will be brushing Club Trails 1,2, and 3 as well as doing brushing in the Maze on Club Trail 13. Please meet at the Club House on Tower Hill Road in Candia. Contact Mike Lawrence for more information mikeL@ snowslickers.org if interested extra help is always appreciated. Greetings from North Sutton At the time of this writing we are in the middle of doing trail work and bridge maintenance. We have a large section of trail to reroute this fall. If anyone would like to help we are meeting at the North Sutton Firehouse at 9am on Sunday mornings. No experience required. Any help is always welcome. The Sutton Ridgerunners will be hosting an OHRV snowmobile safety class on Saturday November 14th at the North Sutton Firehouse. The safety course certifies students 12 years of age and older. There is no charge to take the course. Please bring a lunch; parents are encouraged to stay during class time. To register, please call 603526-2162. In other club news, we hosted another successful Turkey Dinner. This annual club event is to thank local landowners for their generosity. The dinner is also the kick off to our annual fundraising for Easter Seals Camp Snow Mo. Everyone who attends is well fed and enjoys good company with a few laughs. Thank you to all that attended this year’s dinner and to all who donated raffle items. Of course, nothing we do as a club can be accomplished without the volunteers that do everything from peeling vegetables to preparing and serving the dinner. Thank you once again to those who help make this such a popular event. Remember, if you find yourself in the area on a Saturday night in late October next year, come by the North Sutton Firehouse for a good meal, a good time and some great raffle items.

The opinions, beliefs, and viewpoints expressed by the various authors on this page do not necessary reflect the opinions, beliefs and viewpoints of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association or the SnoTraveler.

Where Do Presidential Candidates Stand on Northern Pass & Property Rights?

N

ew Hampshire voters need to ask each announced Presidential Candidate the following questions at every Town Hall meeting, at each meet & greet and/or house party. If you were President would you: 1. Approve the Presidential Permit which is needed to allow foreign power from Hydro-Quebec to cross the US/Canadian border into Pittsburg the most northern town in New Hampshire and run through the center of our state to Deerfield as proposed. 2. Would you support the idea that a foreign utility should have the right to abridge the property rights and reduce property values of US/NH citizens in order to sell electricity into American Markets? My suggestion to all Candidates is that if you haven’t already, you should brush up on the Northern Pass issue by reviewing the two rounds of public hearings, which the Department of Energy (DOE) held. The first round of hearings, a total of seven, were held throughout the state in 2011 and the second round of hearings were held in 2013. Also review the latest report by DOE released this past July (2015) which found a negative impact from above ground transmission towers which would have an adverse impact on the beauty of our North Country, create negative property values, as well as impact our tourism and recreation. Much has changed from DOE’s first round of public hearings in 2011. Public Service of New Hampshire (PSNH) is now Eversource-NH. We were told in the beginning that burying any of the power lines was just too expensive and the only viable way was overhead transmission lines. Then we were told they could bury 8 miles of the northernmost section of Northern Pass. DOE

came out with their not so glowing report last month and a few weeks later the President of EversourceNH, Bill Quinlan, announced a new plan to bury a total of 60 miles of Northern Pass and also earmark 10 percent of lower-cost power to Eversource customers and create a $200 million fund to boost economic development in the North Country. In the beginning we were told Northern Pass would cost around $1.2 to $1.4 billion which was based on all transmission lines above ground. Then in the first revision of 2013 we were promised they would bury 8 miles. Now under the second phase we’re promised that a total of 60 miles will be buried, and they would also create a $200 million economic fund and 10 percent lower cost power, yet the total cost of Northern Pass remains the same $1.4 billion. How does that happen? All New Hampshire voters need to ask each Presidential Candidate these important questions concerning Northern Pass. In the past two weeks the NH Site Evaluation Committee (SEC) held five public hearings (in the five counties where the Northern Pass project is proposed) which are required 30 days before the Northern Pass files for the SEC permitting application. I would also encourage all voters to contact the SEC members and share your concerns at, www.nhsec.nh.gov/ members. Tom Thomson Thomson Family Tree Farm Orford, NH 1-603-353-4488 ❄

by Allan Houle The New Hampshire Snowmobile Museum is celebrating our 30th Anniversary as a Museum and our 10th Anniversary at the NHSA Grass Drags and Water Cross Event. These are two important milestones in our history. We have truly enjoyed reaching these milestones and being able to preserve and present some of the history of early snow travel. Our founders had a vision of such a place to allow enthusiast the opportunity to view some of these early day machines. What better venue than the NHSA Grass Drags and Water Cross Event to bring these machines to the public!

There were also some nice Yamaha snowmobiles on display. This manufacturer was one of the first to have oil injection on their first production machines. Many early model year manufacturers required the oil and gas to be mixed. This could cause issues if the mixture was not correct. Yamaha had the consumer in mind when they designed their machines.

Another view of the 1971 Arctic Cat King Kat 650. The third machine in is an Arctic Cat Turf Tiger which was made for Grass Drags, this is the 292 model which is only 1 of 50 machines built by Arctic Cat. A rare machine and one that we were very fortunate to be able to observe.

The machine in the background is an Arctic Cat is powered by a single cylinder 4 stroke, and we thought 4 stroke power plants where newer technology. The machine in the middle is a 1974 Skidoo Free air TnT, which was a consumer muscle sled. This Sno*Jet in the foreground is a very nice specimen of the blue machines that Sno*Jet brought to the market.

This “Big Blue” machine in the foreground is a ThunderJet and is primarily built for racing. The owner was able to ride this machine into the display tent during set-up and there is no doubt that this machine was built for speed. There are other Sno*Jet machines in the background along with Polaris and Artic Cat race sleds as well.

We would like to thank our banner sponsors along with everyone that came in to enjoy this display. Thank you for sharing some of your early memories of snowmobiling. It seems like many remember the first time that they saw or rode a snowmobile. We would also like to thank all the volunteers that worked so hard to provide the labor and enthusiasm to put on this display. Your help is very much appreciated. Many thanks to the NHSA for providing this venue for all to enjoy, if you are a snowmobile enthusiast, this is the place to be Columbus Day weekend.

Our next event will be our 31st Winter Rally on Sunday February 14, 2016 at the Museum Complex at Bear Brook State Park. This is a great time to come by the museum and enjoy the early days of snowmobiling. Whether you come to enjoy the museum or to ride and display in the field, or enjoy the heat from the fireplace, we hope to see you there. You can also find out more about the New Hampshire Snowmobile Museum Association by visiting our website at nhsnowmobilemuseum.com, Thank you and we hope to see you at one of our event. ❄

You can see that some of the early years of snowmobiles had 3 cylinder free air power plants. These two Arctic Cats both have 650 triples, with the machine in the middle a one year build 1971 King Kat, built primarily for racing. The Blue machine on the far end is a 1972 Polar Bear, Model 399. The Polar Bear was manufactured in Connecticut. Who knew we had a snowmobile manufacturer in the Northeast?
