hy do all good things come to an end? Winter decided to give us one last burst, allowing many riders to enjoy a few more GREAT rides in MANY parts of our state! With the few weeks of warm weather and bare grounds, the trails had been closed for the season, but with this last big snowfall, the hardworking and dedicated groups that manage the trails decided to provide riders an extension to the season. Keep in mind that this was not possible statewide, as some clubs and areas of the state had barricades that made the re-opening impossible. The trail system is a very sensitive system and we must respect the decisions that our local clubs and state agencies make. What might work for one region of the state does not work for another region. So with this said, be cautious on scolding clubs, the state agencies or even NHSA for what seems in the world around you to be a poor decision for I assure you that there are reasons behind the decisions made. Remember, we are all working together 365 days out of the year to PROMOTE the sport of snowmobiling, not just

for one weekend. Thank you to ALL the volunteers, land owners, Bureau of Trails, and Fish and Game for the efforts that you put forth to extend the snowmobile season and also to those clubs that made good decisions to protect the trails for the future seasons. Thank you all that you have done for the season — it truly was a great season! NHSA has been busy attending some fantastic events recently. NHSA thanks Chief Chris Gamache for the invite to attend the District 1 Executive Councilor’s Ride. The event was a wonderful day of education of the E-911 system and fantastic riding through regions of trails well maintained by the Belknap Snowmobile Club, the Sno-Streakers Snowmobile Club, the Bridgewater Snowmobile Club and the Squam Trailbusters Snowmobile Club. This event was a wonderful opportunity to share our passion for the sport of snowmobiling with Councilor Joseph Kenney. The NHSA trailer attended the popular annual Sno-Deo – thanks to the Swift Diamond Rider’s Snowmobile Club and Kurt Muhlfelder for the invite to participate at your event. Lastly, NHSA hosted and attended a legislative breakfast at the Concord Legislative Offices in support of all the efforts our legislators provide to our sport – thank you to NHSA’s lobbyists at Bianco’s office for support, guidance and assistance in making this event successful year after year. Upcoming events are few, but important. As many of you know, the NHSA Annual Meeting is on Sunday, May 7, 2017 aboard the

ach year, the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association works to protect, preserve and promote the sport of snowmobiling in New Hampshire. Not only does snowmobiling infuse approximately $586 million into the state’s economy, but it’s a fun, family activity that we hope to see continue for generations, which requires hard work by countless volunteers. One of the many ways NHSA works behind the scenes to ensure the sport’s future is to develop and foster relationships with state officials who make decisions on laws that may impact snowmobiling. NHSA has a lobbying firm who monitors legislative activity and helps us stay on top of any issues that might creep up that could threaten (or sometimes benefit) snowmobiling. Once NHSA takes a position on a piece of legislation, then we work to ensure the outcome is in the best interest of you — the rider. We do this by contacting representatives and senators, attending committee or legislative hearings, offering testimony on behalf of the sport, and, when necessary, rallying the troops to show numbers in support of our position. Part of developing these important relationships with state officials involves providing opportunities to educate them on the sport of snowmobiling. The months of February and March were a busy time for this type of activity. With the season in full swing and the new legislative session well underway, NHSA joined Bureau of Trails and Fish and Game on a legislative ride in February). Some may remember the former Annual Ray Burton Ride – a guided tour of a snowmobile region for legislators. This event — the Executive Councilor

District 1 Snowmobile Tour for 2017 — was the revival of the tour and was hosted by Bureau of Trails and Executive Councilor for District 1, Joseph D. Kenney. The ride began with a meeting at the 911 Office in Laconia where attendees learned of the massive efforts being undertaken by club volunteers and state officials to make the statewide trail system more easily accessible for emergency responders. The ride took off from there, traversing trails in counties located in the southern region of District 1, stopping at a few interesting sites and discussing issues, such

as bridge and/or railroad trestle crossings, along the way. In this photo, the group paused trailside in Plymouth for a packed lunch. Pictured above, left to right, are Bill Cass, Deputy Commissioner of NH Department of Transportation; Major John Wimsatt, NH Fish and Game; Chris Gamache, Chief Supervisor of Bureau of Trails; Beth Horvath-Palmer, President of the NH Snowmobile Association; Christian Kenney; Joe Kenney, NH Executive Councilor District 1; Shawn Violette, District 3 Supervisor Bureau of Trails; Michael Weeks, District 2 Supervisor of Bureau of Trails; Monica Pettengill Jerkins, Executive Director for the NH Snowmobile Association; Philip Bryce, NH Director of Parks and Recreation; and Cody Morrison, former District 1 intern. The second photo was taken on the morning of March 9 at the State House cafeteria where NHSA hosted a legislative breakfast for house legislators and state senators. This annual event provides and opportunity for representatives from NHSA to meet and greet with more than 100 state officials – the decision-makers in Concord. We use this time to answer questions about the association and snowmobiling in the state. It gives us an opportunity to hear about the concerns that legislators might have about the sport, and to educate them on the importance of snowmobiling to the economy and as a wholesome, fun, family recreation. In this photo, from left to right, are Senator Jeff Woodburn; NHSA President Beth Horvath-Palmer; Bureau of Trails Chief Chris Gamache; NHSA Executive Director Monica Pettengill Jerkins; NHSA Immediate Past President Roger Wright; and Fish & Game Major John Wimsatt.

Trail Tales

SPRING 2017

by Chris Gamache, NH Bureau of Trails riders want to be able to hold on to the season. We are all hoping that the Sno-Deo is a great success this year and continues to be the mustattend event for the future.

Isn’t the Trails Bureau part of Fish and Game? CHRIS GAMACHE

NH BUREAU OF TRAILS

What a funky winter we had; maybe

Black

Trails opened five days earlier than our goal in northern New Hampshire this winter. We had feet of new snow to start February. What happened in between then and now? January set records for warmth and some sort of evil magic descended upon us the week of Massachusetts school vacation. We started the week with 2 feet of fresh snow and by Thursday, New Hampshire set new heat record of 73 degrees. The upside to the fabulous December start and February snows was that we doubled the snowmobile registrations from last winter (23,000 last year and over 46,000 this year). The downside is that to actually fund the grooming account to the level that we need for the clubs to maintain the trails for a season we need to register 49,000 sleds. I am writing this edition’s article from the Sno-Deo; the annual must-attend event for snowmobilers and the major fundraiser for the Swift Diamond Riders SMC. It was 45 degrees and raining, with lots of mud at the event area, on Wednesday, and 7 degrees and frozen ground there today. While talking with the club president, Tim (who said he doesn’t read my articles, calling you out Tim; LOL), he was talking about the winter we have had and that at Diamond Pond, the snows have been great all winter, until last week. The weather did an about-face and spring decided to show up and then leave again. The impact on Sno-Deo was quite evident; trucks and trailers could not set up until Thursday, some vendors asked about not coming, and their phone and Facebook page was constantly inquiring about what was going on. It was a somber reminder about how weather determines what clubs and our Bureau do on a daily basis, and how desperately the

No. The Trails Bureau is part of the New Hampshire Division of Parks and Recreation (currently part of the Department of Resources and Economic Development: DRED) and we are charged with coordination of the statewide snowmobile and OHRV trail networks, as well as overseeing the recreational management of the State-owned abandoned railroad corridors. Fish and Game is our sister agency and they handle some aspects of the trails (registrations, law enforcement and safety education classes), and we handle other aspects (trail building and maintenance, landowner negotiations, grant funding for clubs, and coordination with other state and federal agencies about snowmobile trails). We are often at the same events, meetings and functions together because to truly understand all aspects of the sport requires both of our agencies.

with the Fish and Game Department for enforcement, running the registration program and safety education programs. Another 22 percent comes to the Trails Bureau to build and maintain trails, and to run groomers in the winter; and the other 56 percent goes back out to snowmobile clubs help reimburse trail grooming, build bridges and improve trails, and buy trail groomers (based upon a New Hampshire resident, club member rate). This registration fee, plus what you may pay to join a club is all that funds 7,000 miles of trails that you want to ride on. In total, what you pay for a snowmobile registration is less than the cost of a round of golf in July, or a ski lift ticket on a weekend day. Even if you only ride once it is still a reasonable cost to have trails available for you to use.

Our Collective Future We, as a snowmobile community, do need to look at where we are headed in the future. In good winters we are topping out registrations at about 47-48,000 sleds. To keep $1.6 million available for trails grooming by clubs, we need to register 49,000 sleds annually, or we need to

change how we are operating today. Riders that come here love that the trails are groomed more than trails in other parts of this region. To keep doing what we are doing today means more people need to register each year. We have 365+ trail groomers in New Hampshire (from snowmobiles to the largest grooming units) and their costs continue to rise annually. The largest groomers that we buy cost about $240,000 each to buy them new. $6.70 from each snowmobile registration is dedicated to go into a grant account specifically to buy replacement groomers, but if we registered 49,000 sleds that would give us $245,000 each year. To replace the 100 or so large groomers in New Hampshire would take us more than 50 years at that rate. We need to get more folks

into snowmobiling to keep our trails into the future. Most club volunteers are retirees and getting new volunteers to groom trails, or even to show up for a club meeting, is very difficult. This is not an epidemic just hitting snowmobiling though. All nonprofits are finding issues with recruiting new volunteers or getting donations. It is time for all of us to sit down and look both inside and outside of the box to figure out how, if possible, to tweak what we are doing for the future. How do we keep the world class trails that we have today, with less funding and people available to us? Do we need a new funding model? New incentives to participate? Time to really talk about it. ❄

NHSA Scholarship Announcement

N Here is a quick guide on how to tell us apart in the field: Green truck = Fish and Game; blue truck = Trails Bureau. Green shirts and jackets = Fish and Game; blue or black jackets = Trails Bureau. Gold badges, side arm and handcuffs = Fish and Game; none of these items = Trails Bureau. Operating an excavator, groomer, dozer or other equipment = Trails Bureau. We continually find that many riders still don’t understand how grooming and trail projects are funded. When you register your sled you are contributing toward grooming and other projects. A portion, about 22 percent, stays

ote the EARLIER Deadline this year. This deadline allows us time to submit our top two finishers to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations Northeast Chapter for further consideration in the Northeast Council Scholarship program. The New Hampshire Snowmobile Association will award three book scholarships ($1,000.00, $500.00 and $250.00) to graduating high school seniors who have been accepted at a College, Junior College, or Vocational School or to a College Student who is already enrolled. The student’s Parents or Guardians must be already be a member in good standing of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association for the 2016-2017 year. The Scholarship Committee will review all applications and make

its awards based upon academic achievement, extracurricular involvement, community service and the quality of the original essay submitted with each application. Financial need is a secondary criterion used in the selection of the winner. Completion of the financial need portion of the application is optional. Students who have provided a complete financial background will be given priority over those whose applications are incomplete when all other considerations are the same. The 2017 essay should be about what snowmobiling means to you, or about snowmobiling in your state (economy, trails, and environment) in five hundred (500) words or less. Your complete application package must be received by the New Hampshire Snowmobile

Association office by April 1, 2017. The package must contain the following: your application, letter of acceptance at the college you will be attending, transcript of grades at high school or grade record of the college you are already attending, essay and your recommendations. All application materials are considered Confidential, and will be limited to examination for their intended purpose only and become property of the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association. NOTE: Applications received at the NHSA Office by March First will also be eligible for forwarding to the American Council of Snowmobile Associations Northeast Chapter for further consideration in the Northeast Council Scholarship program. ❄

e were talking about how to handle some of the negative emails we have been fielding at the last board meeting, some of these emails sounded just like me before I got active with the club (not that I actually sent an email, but I was plenty guilty of spouting off to anyone who would listen). I wanted to pass on what I have learned over the last seven years grooming and working with the club volunteers. First off, they are all volunteers. I seem to forget that sometimes. These people are all taking time out of their own crazy schedules for me for free. It’s amazing how much work goes into the trails before we even see snow. We have a very small core group of people (less than 12) who never get recognized and who do most of the work. There is a treasurer who pays all the fuel bills, organizes all the maintenance receipts, deals with the bank loans on equipment and property, pays the utilities and keeps the club’s finances organized and accountable. For free! We have a small group (I’m guessing the average age is 70) who are out walking the trails putting up signs, looking for reroute options, clearing down trees, building bridges and filling in wash outs. Every year those volunteers spend countless hours knocking on doors, pleading with landowners to keep the trails open on their land another year. We have a small group of maintenance men who spend countless hours working on all types of equipment — big and small — all for free. This includes ordering new parts and keeping replacements on hand so we are not down when something wears out. Again, they are doing this all year, for free. We have fundraisers and event coordinators heading up committees that help keep us in the black. Clubs need more money

than the state grants. Agreeing

to head up one of these usually means you and your family are

doing most of the work. We have a group that goes to the Grass Drags and Nascar events. They volunteer

their time and the club gets paid. Social events, dances, pig roasts, club presence at parades, and town events keeps us “alive” financially.

Someone collects all the club

registration forms, fills in all

necessary paperwork with the state, pays the state, separates all

the donations and makes sure they get into the right accounts, and fills

your envelope with club stickers

and necessary papers to register your sleds. Again, all for free and with mostly negative feedback.

Club president and other officers

are meeting throughout the year, putting out fires with landowners and the state, filing paperwork for

grooming and equipment grants, YUCK, so glad someone else does this.

Last, but not least, Groomers.

Men and women, giving up their

own riding time to go out and try to get the trails ready for the

weekend rush. Unless you’ve tried doing it, it’d difficult to understand

how hard it is to keep a trail groomed on a weekend. Thank You, riders, for all the high fives,

fist pumps and kisses we receive when we pass you on the trail.

So before you hit send on that

next ALL CAPS email, remember who you’re sending it too — a

bunch of volunteers who love the sport as much as you do, all

working for free all year round so we have something to ride on again next year.

To all Club members: we are so

grateful for all your donations and for your choosing to register with

the club. We will continue putting it all to good use and try to keep this sport alive for generations to come. ❄

It is also important to remember that in 2018, the club incentive membership program will begin for the OHRV community under recently enacted legislation from the 2016 session. It will be necessary for NHSA and the New Hampshire Off-Highway Vehicle Association (NHOHVA) to work together to ensure a smooth transition and avoid confusion to the rider/customer. I want to extend a most sincere thank you to all the volunteer Snowmobile and OHRV Safety Education Instructors. There is still much work to do with regard to the procedures surrounding verification of proof of club membership. However, we have taken the initial steps to address these concerns and have started drafting revised administrative rules to ensure proper accountability of the registration program while ensuring that the provisions of RSA 215-C:39 are complied with. amp will be holding our final respite weekends on March 24 through 26 and April 21 through 23. Registrations are signing up currently. We have approximately 70 campers to date as of March 22, 2017. Camp Sno-Mo fully expects to equal, if not exceed last year's record breaking numbers. International Staff lined up to work this summer hail from England, Ireland, Wales, USA and the Philippines. It is so important that camp brings the world to these campers to experience other cultures and nationalities as, unfortunately, a lot of our campers will not or are unable to travel overseas due to their disability. NHSA day is under review and a date for the visit will be announced ASAP. Construction: Work begins on the remodeling of the hot tub area. It will become a place where those campers who use a wheel chair have a little more privacy when showering.

project happen so please let your voices be heard when the time comes. We are still hoping to do the Moat Brook trestle reroute to take part of Corridor 19A off the rails. This project will need both physical and financial support. In the long term, this reroute will eliminate a significant amount of pallet work that is done every spring and fall. Our annual bonfire was well attended this year and we appreciate all who attended. Ryan Poirier from Hopkinton, MA was the winner of the 2016 Can-Am Outlander! Thank you to all who supported the club by purchasing raffle tickets. At the time we are writing this article, spring seems a long way off, however by the time you are reading this, spring will be right around the corner. And we all know what that means! You guessed it – removing pallets from the trestles. If you are able to help with this project, please contact our Trail Master, Colin Preece, at 603-662-7790. Even if you can only give an hour or two of your time, your help will be appreciated!

Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club

We welcomed a few significant snowfalls during the month of February and an abundance of riders flooded our valley to enjoy the trails. It was not meant to last, however, as by the end of February much of it had already melted. After a couple of warm weather weeks (including the week many schools are on vacation), the beginning of March appears to be turning back to winter. Our groomers tried to manage the snow that was left during the warm weather and we hope that more snow will be heading our way soon. During the down time, in the midst of the warm temperatures, our drag was rebuilt with new wear rails and cutting blades. There was a lot of grinding and welding done for this job and we would like to give a big thank you to Todd Marshall for the use of his shop and his steady hand at welding. We anticipate the Bear Notch Connector Trail will be going for public comment period soon. Please keep an eye on our “Projects” under the “Trails” tab on our website, www. mountainmeadowriders.com, for information regarding the public comment period. A lot of input will be essential in making this

An abundance of snow in early February made for some fantastic riding. During the first part of February, our groomer operators were busy keeping our trails in tip-top shape. However, the great snow conditions and increased numbers of riders have led to an increase in off-trail riding. This is very concerning to us, and to other clubs throughout the state, as intrusion onto private lands threatens our relationships with our landowners. If landowners revoke permission to have our trails on their property, that will make it impossible to maintain our trail systems. Come up and enjoy our trails and our beautiful area, but Please! Stay on the trail. As of this writing, we have experienced another period of warm temperatures, rain and fog, that have wreaked havoc on our trails. We are keeping our fingers crossed for more snow, and hope that by the time you read this, we will again be out riding and enjoying the rest of the winter. Keep an eye on our website during the summer months. We will be doing a lot of trail work and bridge construction in order to have our re-route open for next season. Work parties will be posted on our web site. Your help is always appreciated. Thank you

for supporting our club and have a great summer.

Seven Lakes Snowmobile Club PO Box 311, East Wakefield, NH 03830 www.sevenlakessnowmobileclub.com Submitted by Bob Lundgren Is the winter of 2017 over or just taking a break? After a relatively mild January, February (not March) came in like a lion and in short order dumped at least three feet of snow in the Wakefield, Effingham, Ossipee, Brookfield, and Wolfeboro area. Our trails now had the wished-for snow, though the next challenge was getting it groomed. Of course, anyone who has been involved in maintaining trails knows that they can’t be groomed right way. They need to be packed first, hopefully by some eager riders. Once the snow has some body to it, then it can be groomed. However, once flattened out, the ideal thing is to allow a few hours of time for the snow to “set up”. A freshly groomed trail, as enticing as it can be, should be ridden carefully. The ideal thing here is to have trails groomed late at night on weekends. During the week, it’s not as critical since traffic is generally lighter (except on school vacation weeks). Anyway, we had some good riding for a couple of weeks. Of course not everyone was happy, but with 75 miles of trail, all volunteers to do the work, and not wanting to groom during peak traffic times, it’s a challenge. Anytime I think back to my first experiences riding in the late 60’s and 70’s and remember the moguls we had to contend with, I realize how fortunate we are now. Even at their worst, the trails and machines are so much better. After a depressing January, and a snowy, cold start to February, one could rest easy that we still had at least a month of good riding, but then the jet stream played one of its periodic tricks on us as well as the whole state! Within a week, most of the new snow was thin or gone on the trails and the lakes have become questionable. As I write this on the last weekend in February, it has become cold again but the weather report is calling for rain on Wednesday, March 1. By the following weekend it’s supposed to get cold again so who knows how things will play out. One bit of good news is that the reroute of the Ossipee section of Corridor 22 is coming together. You’ll recall that the extension of active railroad tracks to Route 171 in Ossipee ended an important part of that link. I understand that landowner permission has been

obtained so the trail will be able to bypass the active tracks and link up with the inactive rail bed, which will tie into Corridor 19 once again. Once the snow is gone, work can begin on creating the trail. Hopefully, this will be a longterm change. Keeping landowners happy is a challenge that every rider should take very seriously. I have heard that some clubs have been plagued by riders going offtrail, sometimes damaging young trees. This is where the sign “Stay on Trail or Stay Home” means what it says. We are shortly sending out “Thank you” letters to our landowners with an invitation to our annual pot-luck dinner. It’s hard to show enough gratitude for those willing to share their land, but we try. While I was unable to attend, the social/fundraising event organized by Tobi and Marcus Laurion on February 11 was a success with $1,750 raised and a good time was had by those who attended. We all have our special talents and their organization of this third annual event is theirs. Good job! As the riding season winds down we need to keep your interest up as we will need volunteers for the cleanup crew at the NASCAR races in early and late summer. These events, along with the Grass Drags are extremely important to our financial health. In spite of the grant-in-aid program from the Bureau of Trails a lot of expense falls directly on the Club’s shoulders. Having said that, please consider volunteering for at least one day to help when the plea comes out in the Spring. It’s not hard work! Have a safe summer!

attended had a great day and the family was very appreciative. The event was a huge success. Now to the elephant in the room: the WSC is currently dealing with several major trail closures. Two of our long time land owners have become very disenchanted with ‘off-trail’ riders. While this has become a popular thing to do, it is not legal and the WSC land owners have only given permission to ride in the designated trails. Like it/don’t like it, this blossoming form of riding has created a lot of problems for many clubs and the lack of enforcement on off trail riding has left a serious and growing problem all over the state. Trail permission is called ‘trail’ because the landowner has generously agreed to let snowmobilers pass over their property ‘on a designated trail’. This does not mean ride wherever you want because you think you can, want to, have done elsewhere, your friends do it, or have paid your registration and feel it’s your right. It is not. The consequences are clear: soon there will be no place to ride because the land owners are quickly changing their minds and rescinding permission to cross their land. So - think about it everyone. It may be pointless to write this, but maybe someone will read it that can get the wheels turning to do something before it’s too late. This is not a rant. It’s cold hard facts. Enjoy the rest of winter, and try to help your club out this summer with projects or trail maintenance. They would appreciate it.

With warm wet weather prevailing for much of the peak snowmobiling month of February, our scenic Wolfeboro trails are not currently being groomed due to wet conditions and not enough snow cover. As many know from the news, riding on the lakes is not an option. It’s dangerous for you and your rescuers. Before the melt down, the WSC was able to host the Devin Ness Memorial Poker Run. Umbagog Snowmobile Association PO Box 133, Errol NH 03579-0133 www.umbagogsnowmobile.com Submitted by Bill Morin Winter has been going along very well with 3 feet of snow in one week of February we hope to go till mid to late March this year which makes last year seem like a bad dream. Our groomers have been running every day for a month with some days having two shifts going to keep the trails in top condition. So far this winter we sold concessions at the Lancaster Grand Prix which was a lot of fun although it was too bad the Sunday races were on the same day as the Super Bowl because I am sure attendance for Sunday would have been better. The Poker Run was a great success thanks to Roland, Carol and Maryanne and the rest of the Log Haven crew for allowing us to hold the event at their location it was a great

success. Our card sharks Kim and Bobby once again made people’s dreams and broke people’s hearts. Once again Charlie did a spectacular job with the 50/50 raffle I think it is the biggest one we have had in several years that I can recall over $400 went to the lucky winner. Congratulations to all the winners of the prizes your attendance made the day exciting and fun. I happened to be downtown on Saturday, February 18, and took some pictures. There wasn’t a gas

station or restaurant or store in Errol that wasn’t jammed with sleds and riders. Nothing like a lot of snow and 30 degree day to get everyone out on the trails. There had to be 300 sleds in the parking lots of LL Cote, Hawg Traugh and the Errol Restaurant it was a crazy and a nice sight that we never saw last year. As of this writing we have one more club event this winter — the Steak Feed organized by our own El Presidente and Mrs El Presidente. It should be another

big turnout and of course we have club meetings on the first Friday of each month at the clubhouse on Route 26 with elections being held the first Friday of April. So please try and attend if you are in Errol. Overall, it is looking like a great winter so please be safe on the trails and be careful as you ride. Make sure you have enough gas. There seems to have been a run of sleds running out of gas this winter, so plan accordingly. Continued on page 16

The Ski-Bees have had a very busy season. We had a Wild Game Dinner, a poker run, and a joint Steak Feed with SDR club. These activities are needed to make funds to repair and maintain equipment. But at the same time, they stretch our active membership to its limits. The weather has not been altogether cooperative, however definitely better than last year. It gives us time to keep the equipment running. At our April meeting, we will have election of officers and will be planning our summer projects. Some of these projects include a groomer shed with a poured concrete floor, and the beginnings of a new sign system, and as usual, we will have many bridges to repair and/or replace. We will also be organizing our major fund raisers — our golf tournament, the cook shack for use at the Colebrook Moose festival, and the Race into Winter grass drags in Freemont. Many thanks for the help we received from sponsors and volunteers that helped with repairs and fund raising activities. Check our website and or Facebook page to see what is going on and how you can help.

Snowmobiling is a hearty sport for die-hard riders who can roll with the punches. Sometimes we’re up and sometimes we’re down. When the riding is good, it’s the best! Even when it’s so-so, it’s still great to be outside enjoying the sights and sounds. No matter what, we’re always trying to make our trails and the experience of our local area the best it can be. Thank you to all of you club members, riders, landowners, and local businesses that continue to support BMSC when it’s good and when it’s not so good…that’s what being a good snowmobiler is all about. Special thanks to our groomer operators: Don LeClair, Eric Peterson, and Jimmy Hughes. These are the fine gents that are grooming the trails flat while the rest of us sleep and dream of riding the next day. Thank you to our local trail-side business supporters: Newfound Grocery, Outdoor Performance, Bridgewater Inn, and A Newfound Bed and Breakfast. Even though they are not “trail-side,” thank you to Ashland Lumber for selling our Club Memberships and snowmobile registrations. Please support these local business as they support the great sport of snowmobiling and BMSC.

able to conduct the race without the generous assistance of Dodge Contracting and Schofield’s Septic Service, both of which supplied the dump trucks and snow necessary to build the track. Out of appreciation for his many years of service to the event, the club dedicated the 2017 race to Frank Dodge, President of Dodge Contracting. Likewise, the club is grateful to the numerous local businesses and individuals who/ which helped sponsor this year’s race. Approximately sixteen club members volunteered to help at the event. The club was also assisted by volunteers from the Littleton Off Road Riders, the Dalton Ridge Runners, and Lisbon High School. All of the volunteers were vital in making this year’s vintage race a success. After significant snowfalls on February 12 - 13 and 15 - 16, trail conditions were outstanding for several days. Unfortunately, rain and unusually warm temperatures have since almost entirely melted our snow cover. The Club’s annual Appreciation Dinner will occur on April 29, 2017 at the Shared Ministry Church (a/k/a White Church) on Main Street in Lisbon, NH. In addition to landowners, race sponsors, and current members, we would like to welcome any past members who are interested in attending to join us. Please RSVP to lsjsecretary1@ gmail.com .

Twin State Trail Busters PO Box 858, Lebanon, NH 03766 Email: twinstatetrailbusters@yahoo.com It was nice to see some good accumulating snowfall in midFebruary. Trails were fantastic, however, they were very short lived. We are currently going through another "January thaw" in late February. Unfortunately, our trails suffered major snow loss with 60+ degree days and torrential rains. What looked promising to recover from a slow start was pretty much gone in less than a week. Another rollercoaster winter season. On a positive note, we may have a good shot at not suffering through a repeat of last year's draught. In trail news, there will be some work that needs to be done on the trail to Interchange Drive (behind Walmart) in West Lebanon. Not sure if we will be able to salvage it after a minor landslide and bridge repair. The Lovejoy brook trail was open this year, however it was not groomed. Looking forward to checking that out next year. Thank you to everyone that participated in reopening this link to Lyme.

We will be upgrading our trail map for next year. The current one is out dated and wasn't feasible to get more copies made. It would be greatly appreciated if anyone who would like to sponsor an ad on the new map contact Mark or myself for more information. Thank you to landowners, volunteers and club members. Please "like us" on Facebook for more up to date happenings throughout the summer.

It's hard to believe that another snowmobile season has come and gone, with the 60 and 70 degree days in February. Maybe Global Warming? Who knows? When we finally got pounded with back to back snow storms and got trails all nice and groomed , we were able to use them it turned out pretty good. Thanks to all for staying off the Power Line trails. We know it was kind of a pain the a**, but it will be great next season. As you know we sold our 2015 Skandic 900 Ace groomer and purchased a slightly used 2014 Bear Cat with a Mountain drag and winch system that has all the lights and boxes ready to go. PO Box 517, Hollis, NH 03049 www.noreasters.org Submitted by Doug Cleveland, Treasurer With the scarcity of snow this winter, except for about ten days in February, the riding has been pretty limited with trail conditions ranging from marginal to good, depending on location. Our major event of the season, the Pink Ride, was a big success again this year with a big snowstorm two days before the ride. More than 135 sleds participated in the ten mile ride followed by a cookout back at Silver Lake State Park. All funds raised, over $25,000 this year, were donated to the St. Joseph Hospital Breast Care Center in Nashua. In the six years of the ride we have raised over $100,000. This ride was organized by Nor’Easters secretary Sue Keough as a cancer charity event in 2012. Thank you, Sue, for a wonderful event and a fun day for all, and thanks to all the volunteers who helped out. Membership in the Nor’Easters Snowmobile Club has increased significantly over last year despite the variable weather and snow conditions. The online membership process has worked extremely well and has greatly reduced the amount of work for our membership coordinator, as well as saving the club money. At our monthly club meeting every March we elect all our officers and three board of directors members for the next season. A big thank you to all the officers and directors and volunteers who put in so much time for the good of the club at monthly meetings, Old Home Day, preseason BBQ, snowmobile safety class, the Pink Ride and grooming our beautiful trails. Weare Winter Wanderers PO Box 513, Weare, NH 03281 www.wearewinterwandererssc.org Submitted by Dave Ward, Publicity Director Ridding in the North Country has been great, while here at home it has been hit or miss. When Mother Nature has decided to “hit” us, we have been able to quickly turn it into flat paradise with our three big groomers. We can do this faster than ever before. Please watch the website and Facebook pages for announcements, trail conditions and up-to-date news. Some of our members have logged in excess of 2,200 miles in just the last few weeks in the north country. The club’s two trips were a big hit this year. Speaking of big hits, yes, the tree will live on while the sled will not. No one was harmed during that experiment. The club’s NH Hill Climb Challenge is scheduled for April 1 at Pats Peak Ski area. The event will be bigger than ever! This year, along with the Hill Climb, we will have vintage oval racing presented by the Northwood Crank Pullers, a vintage sled show and side by side drag racing and of course the demo rides on the new models. Bring a helmet and take a ride. Check out your favorite vendors. Visit the beer gardens. And if you feel fast or just want one last ride,, come on up and run your sled!!! More info at: http://www. nhhillclimbchallenge.com Here’s a little update from “The Queen of All Things Social” AKA-Linda Merrill, WWWSocial Director As I sit here in my kitchen looking out over Lake Horace, I’m amazed at how quickly our “winter” is dwindling. Mother Nature wasn’t very kind to us last season so, when the Weare Winter Wanderers planned the adult trip and family club trips this year, I know we all secretly did a little snow dance to insure we’d be able to ride this year! Our first adventure was a safari trip with 35 of us on sleds that departed from Clarksville and Pittsburg, NH on January 27, headed for the Pittston Farm in Rockwood, Maine – 210 miles one way! We were on the trail at 7 a.m. and got into Rockwood around 5 p.m. without incident! Jen and her staff at the Pittston Farm had a great buffet dinner waiting for us when we arrived. Snow conditions were plentiful and the temps were certainly cold enough! Everyone got a chance to relax and unwind after a long day on the trail – the highlight of our weekend trip was taking place on

Saturday, so there was excitement in the air! We all got up early and hit the trails again at 8 a.m. to meet Bill Boisvert who was leading our group up to see the abandoned trains at Eagle Lake. He brought along 10 more sleds to join the pack. Our trek had every type of trail you could imagine, wide open trails, some single track trails with beautiful puffs of snow hanging in the trees and, yes, even some ice. All 45 of us made it to the trains as scheduled, and after everyone had a chance to explore and take pictures, we headed along to the Chesuncook Lake House for a bite to eat for lunch and gas up the sleds. After lunch, and some bogie wheel adjustments, our group of 35 sleds headed back to the Pittston Farm for dinner – a 150 mile day! We all got an early start the next morning and were out on the trails again at 7 a.m. headed back to northern NH – 210 miles back again without incident. Lots of laughs, storytelling, and building memories — that’s what it’s all about! After some quick calculations, we were amazed that our group with about 700 years of combined riding experience, logged about 19,000 trail miles in three days, on about $280,000 worth of snowmobiles! Who says we don’t LOVE our sport? The Weare Winter Wanderers second adventure was our annual family club trip on February 24, 25 and 26. Our group went to the Town & Country Motor Inn in Shelburne, NH. We’ve been here for many years and as usual, we had a great turnout with 31 adults and 14 children – even considering the less than desirable weather forecast for the weekend. Saturday was spring-like to say the least, and we all dressed accordingly. Our groups hit the trails on Saturday and headed off to the warming hut at Jericho ATV Park in Berlin. Some of the group stayed to hang out and cook hotdogs over the fire while the rest of us headed into Millsfield for lunch. Trail conditions we encountered varied from good to MUD! Needless to say, we didn’t hit any staggering mileage records for this weekend — we also encountered a few mechanical issues which are never any fun. Scott and his crew at the T&C were very accommodating as usual. Some of the adults hung out in the “Greenery Room” and watched while their kids played in the indoor swimming pool, others went into the lounge to hear the band that was playing! Most of the group headed back home on Sunday morning, others headed

farther north to take advantage of the rest of their school vacation week, and a small group went out to ride the trails one last time. So for now, we’ll continue to do our snow dances OR say a little snow prayer in hopes that our season continues for a little longer and we can log a few more miles! Hello fellow snowmobilers, I hope everyone got to do some good riding before the “February thaw” came about. With many storms happening in a quick timeframe in February, I thought we were on the path to some awesome riding late in the season. The Easterseals Ride-In was a huge success, as it always is. So much work goes into this event all for such a great cause. Have you ever heard the term “riding on mashed potatoes”? Or, experienced it yourself? That’s what some of our club members rode on this past weekend. A group of members went to Errol where Saturday brought record high temperatures for February and an adventure in trying to ride. Our club President, Al Lambert, got his sled stuck (and I mean STUCK) not once, but TWICE! Then, in order to not feel left out, our Vice President, Sally Raskett, got her sled good and stuck. It was not a good day for board members and their twoups. It was a rough ride. But, as always, they made the best of it and had some good laughs as the day progressed. On Sunday, the group went in a different direction (I’m not even going to pretend I know which direction) and had some really amazing trails to ride on. It’s possible that they did 50+ miles just going back and forth on the 10 mile stretch they found, but no one will admit and/or confirm! Another trip is planned for midMarch, also in Errol, so fingers crossed the riding is good. I can’t believe this is the last article for the 2016-2017 snowmobile season! It was better than last year (at least our trail administrator got out to do a LITTLE grooming this year!) but when it comes to snowmobiling, there can never be “too much” snow or “cold enough” temperatures!  Wishing you all a very nice spring and summer! Make sure you take care of those sleds for the summer so they’re ready for the trails in the winter! Keepin’ it under 60!

Powdermill Snowmobile Club PO Box 324, New Durham, NH 03855 www.powdermillsnowmobileclub.org Submitted by Ginny Abresch, Secretary Wow! Where did the time go? Another snowmobile season is sadly coming to a close. February blew in and dumped three major snowstorms on our trails. It couldn’t have been better timing. Our first snowfall felt like a special gift for our members. Fourteen inches of powdery fluff fell just two days before our Cook Out on the Lookout on February 11. Within 24 hours, our dedicated volunteers had all our trails groomed, smooth and looking fine for the cookout. A special thanks to Jim Gamble for the use of his property, a huge bonfire, and the awesome firework display from the snowy mountain top. Rochester Motor Sports brought some of their bikes and sleds for everyone to check out. Thanks to members of our Cookout Planning Committee – Jim Gamble, Jay St. Lawrence, Stu Hotchkiss, Ray Gamble, Tom Mason and Bob Bickford, for all the hard work planning this event. We had a very good turnout for the event. Monday delivered another fourteen inches of snow to keep our groomers busy preparing for our Winter Carnival scheduled the next Saturday. Members enjoyed an additional ten inches of snow Wednesday evening while planning the final carnival details at our monthly club meeting. The Winter Carnival arrived February 18th on a “dial up” perfect day. Beautiful sunshine and awesome snow brought out a record number of sleds in front of Johnson’s Market on Route 11 in New Durham. Grilled steak tips, wine tasting and beer tasting was available for anyone interested. Raffle tickets were sold along with hot chocolate, cookies and donuts. Once again, thanks to Rochester Motor Sports for bringing a fleet of snowmobiles and ski bikes for interested folks to demo. Thanks to Matt Murphy and Jay St Lawrence for organizing the raffle, getting sponsors and selling the tickets. The raffle drawing will take place at our next meeting on March 14. Powder Mill Snowmobile Club can be found on Facebook as well as a new chat group called Powder Mill Trail Riders. This is a great place to get current trail conditions and perhaps find someone else that would like to get out and ride with you. Our website is www. Powdermillsnowmobileclub.org. Meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month beginning

at 7 p.m. at the Granite Steak and Grill in Rochester. Our first meeting for the 2017/18 season will be held on September 12. We look forward to seeing old friends and are always looking forward to meeting new members who enjoy our passion for sledding. Here’s wishing everyone a safe and wonderful spring and summer, until we meet again in the fall, as we prepare for another great snow season.

confident we can again solicit a large group of volunteers to make these few improvement projects successful. Lastly, I would like to thank all our groomers this year who made our trails the best they have ever been for the relatively short season we had. Special thanks to Richard, Travis, Gil, Lenny, Trevor, Kenny, Steve and Eric for their time and expertise on keeping our trails enjoyable for all who rode locally. The next great snow winter is coming soon!

Blow-Me-Down Snow Riders PO Box 221, Cornish Flat, NH 03746 www.blowmedownsnowriders.com Submitted by John Berry It is near the end of February as I write this and I was hoping to tell everyone of a successful poker run our club had rescheduled for February 25. However, due to the ups and downs of weather, we are forced to cancel it a second time this winter. I suppose we need to be grateful for the good riding days we had and enjoyed in mid-February. It was sure great to see hundreds of snowmobilers out enjoying our trails when great snow conditions existed. I am still hoping March allows us a few more real good local riding opportunities. We were successful on a couple of major reroutes to our primary trails thanks to a large turnout of workers that may it possible along with generous landowners. We have already developed a list of trail improvements for our upcoming off season. I am

Greetings! Well Mother Nature has certainly given us a wild ride here in the central part of the state. We finally received a blast of New England winter. Three storms in a week totaling well over two feet of snow with temperatures cold enough to groom out all of the trails has made for some absolutely fantastic riding. I hope everyone has been able to get out and enjoy the great conditions. Over the course of the last week I have run into fellow snowmobilers, cross-country skiers, dog mushers, hikers, fat-tire mountain bikers all out enjoying the local trails. I just want to give a shout out to all who have helped get our trails ready for the season, our groomer operators, and landowners. Between all of the equipment maintenance, trail work, administrative duties, grooming, fundraising, etc. there is a lot that goes into making this great network of trails we all enjoy. If you haven’t considered joining a local club and helping out in some way, I would ask that you reconsider. The time spent with family and friends on a sport we all love makes the ride all that much more worth it. Even though March has delivered some epic snow storms in the past, we are nearing the backside of our riding season. Warmer temperatures are in the forecast and spring conditions will soon be here. Please keep in mind the ice will be thinning on our local ponds, water bars will be opening up and rocks will start to poke up from the snow. Stay safe and enjoy the trails.
