which provides an opportunity for club Presidents to gather with NHSA Board of Directors, NH Bureau of Trails, NH Fish & Game, Easter Seals and other guests to discuss current topics within the Association and in the sport of snowmobiling as a whole. And, as if the Association hasn’t been busy enough with all of those activities, Race Into Winter – Grass Drags & Water Cross is right around the corner — so be sure to encourage your club members to enroll to participate in the club fundraising program at this exciting event. Then, at the conclusion of the Grass Drags, we will almost literally “race into winter” together. This year plans to be filled with new adventures, new goals, new surprises, and many accomplishments. Public relations is a forefront project that will present members with updated information through many resources such as Facebook, the NHSA website, and emails, along with the more traditional snail mail. I would like to encourage all

of you to get involved at any level that you are able. There is something out there for each and every one of you to do that will benefit the sport of snowmobiling. Reach out to your local clubs, the NHSA office, and NHSA County Directors to provide input, feedback, suggestions, and positive comradery as we embark on this new season. We are all volunteers balancing our life

responsibilities around a 24-hour day. We need to collaborate our efforts to continue to work toward the common good for the sport of snowmobiling. My number one rule that will forever be enforced is BE KIND. So get involved, remember to BE KIND to one another and we will accomplish lots of rewarding goals in the year to come! ❄

Dear NHSA members and friends: As the dry, hot summer weather begins to depart, the cool fall winds blow in and avid snowmobilers begin to tinker on their sleds and equipment in preparation for the next season…WINTER! I am by no means a meteorologist, but I would like to take a gander that Mother Nature is stock piling the moisture for winter. She will be ready to release that moisture once the temperatures fall low enough to ensure the transformation of

the liquid into white, fluffy flakes of winter gold — SNOW! And all snowmobilers will live happily ever after. Now that my prediction has gotten your attention, I would like to say welcome to the 2016-2017 snowmobile season! Since the transition of Monica Jerkins into the seat of Executive Director, and the welcome of the new Executive Board members, along with a warm welcome to the addition of a few new Directors and Assistant Directors, and the continuation of devoted Board members and experienced Phyllis MacDonald at the front desk of the office, the Association as a whole has been busy in preparation for the new season. The online membership program is available and ready to receive memberships. The office hosted an Open House on September 7, and people visited to meet the team that helps make the Association successful. By the time you’re reading this season’s first issue of the SnoTraveler, the 2016 Presidents meeting will have taken place,

EARLY FALL 2016

by Monica Pettengill Jerkins, Executive Director

Dear Friends of NHSA: I

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

t was a hot — really hot — day in midAugust when I noted the first signs of autumn on my drive in to the NHSA office one morning. As my air conditioner kept me a comfortable 68 degrees, I noticed the first leaves changing colors on the trees. I couldn’t help but smile in that moment because it reminded me of my favorite thing, aside from the people, about living in New England — the changing seasons. Change is generally a good thing — it keeps life interesting, offers opportunities for new adventure, and spurs creativity. Change can be challenging, but, when approached with a positive attitude, the rewards change brings with it tend to be worth any of the struggles. And so, as we bid adieu to the warm, hazy days of summer to cool nights, pumpkin spice everything, and sweaters, many, many changes are afoot — and not just with the weather. This summer, the snowmobiling family said goodbye to former NHSA Executive Director Gail Hanson as she embarked on a new phase of her life. Gail was with the New Hampshire Snowmobile Association for 14 years and retired from her position at the end of June. Gail certainly made her mark, and I’m reminded daily of the shoes I have to fill in her absence. There are few people in the snowmobiling industry in the northeast, and possibly the country, who are not familiar with her name and outstanding reputation as being a proponent for the sport. I’m happy to report that Gail continues working in snowmobiling through her local club and will always be a dear friend of the Association. Enjoy your retirement, Gail! And of course, with Gail’s departure, here I am — the new Executive Director of the NHSA. Most of you have probably never heard my name and know very little about me, and I hope to change all of that in the upcoming season. There is much I have to learn and many people I have to meet as I face all of the normal challenges that come with the job, like weather conditions, growing and promoting the sport we all love, improving landowner relations that we rely on so heavily for our wonderful and vast network of trails, supporting the Clubs in the state, and just managing the day-today operations of the Association — among multiple other goals and tasks. But with

your help, support, patience, and kindness, I am so looking forward to this change. I know it will be a challenge, but I also know it will bring with it rewards — rewards for me, rewards for you, and rewards for the sport of snowmobiling in the state of New Hampshire. Please feel free to stop by the office, or to give me a call, or to write me an email at any time. Nothing thrills me more than sharing ideas and using our passion for the sport to create a positive energy that can only serve to make great things happen. You also have an entirely new Executive Board of Directors and a few new directors or assistants on the NHSA Board. This year will be a learning one for all involved, but everyone I’ve had the privilege of working with thus far is eager to do their part in making snowmobiling in New Hampshire an unparalleled experience. Thank you for your support and encouragement as we move forward with all of the changes taking place at NHSA. Now, let’s talk about a few other changes. You might notice some subtle differences in this issue of the Sno-Traveler. I’m excited to announce that in the upcoming months, you will begin to see more and more changes in this publication. These changes should help to improve your reading experience while providing the advertisers who support our industry with a top-notch publication in which they can communicate with the demographic they serve. The changes should work towards the goal of making the Sno-Traveler a publication that promotes the sport of snowmobiling in our state, as well as keeping members informed of Association news, while at the same time, bringing it to the point where the magazine is able to support itself financially. I welcome your feedback. This morning, I walked outside and noticed the air smelled like fall — another telling sign that seasons are changing. Clubs are ramping up their trail work and could sure use your help. Last year was a discouraging winter, but that doesn’t mean there’s less work to do than usual. We must think positive. We must think SNOW! And above all, we must work together. Respectfully, Monica Pettengill Jerkins

you at the table at grant meetings.

I want to say a heartfelt thank you to Dave Goulet, from Groveton. Dave has been the Coos County Grant In Aid Advisor for longer than I have worked for the Bureau (15 years). Dave emailed me last week to let me know that he will be stepping down from this role. Dave has been an avid proponent for snowmobiling in New Hampshire, and the North Country. He has fought for funding for trail projects and though his heart in north of notches he has always worked for the great good of the sport. Dave, we wish you and Rhonda the best for the future and will truly miss

New Tunnel at Route 26 For you northern riders who love the area of Dixville Peak and the Balsams, you will find a new addition for this winter. NHDOT, in cooperation with the Bureau, has installed a 14’x 24’ box culvert under Route 26 on Primary Trail 134. The old culvert was a 6’ round culvert that modern sleds had a tough time getting through, and more riders were starting to follow the groomer over Route 26. This new culvert will allow all sleds, and groomers, to pass, uninterrupted, under the highway. ❄

winter that wasn’t, a summer that has broken records for warmth, and not a lot of rain. Overall, 2016 was not the season of the snowmobiler. But, 2017 will be. “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” said last winter would be fairly typical for the area. Well, it is said that they are accurate about 80 percent of the time. Last year was a 20 percent year. Anyway, the forecast for this winter is better than last year’s reality. The concern for clubs and riders is that after last season, which provided for the lowest snowmobile registrations in over two decades, most riders won’t want to actually register their sleds until there is sufficient snow on the ground to ride. That is a common mistake and a very costly one for the trail system. Regardless of the weather, there are bridges to maintain, groomers to have fueled and ready to go (not to mention the regular maintenance on those not-soinexpensive rigs), and other trail work so that trails are ready when the snow does come (because we always get some). When you look at the overall cost to register, it really costs you almost nothing for what you get: less than $100 for access to over 7,000 miles of some of the best riding on the continent. Less than $100 for the ability to get out with family and friends for an activity you love. Too expensive! Seriously?!?! When I play golf (not regularly), I pay $80 to swear for four hours. It costs $90 to spend 90 minutes on a zip line. Be a snowmobiler — join a club and support the folks doing the work and get your sled registered. My family’s sleds are already registered.

EARLY FALL 2016

Snowmobile Community Looks Forward to a Great Winter Season by Ed Klim, International Snowmobile Manufactures Association

ED KLIM

INTERNATIONAL SNOWMOBILE MANUFACTURERS ASSOCIATION

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

Haslett, MI, September 8, 2016: The snowmobile manufacturers are looking forward to a strong sales year and great snowmobiling. New products at spring shows had a warm acceptance and advanced showings and open houses are touting excellent crowd interest and deposits on new sleds. This winter promises abundant reasonably priced fuel matched with a snowy winter, supported by a La Niña forecast for the snow belt across North America.

According to weather forecasters, we can expect higher than normal snowfalls and “real winter” temperatures. This past year, the snowmobile industry worked through an El Nino winter, which brought warmer/ moderate winter climate, and low snowfall. Yet, the manufacturers realized a 10 percent gain in sales over the last five years. The forecast for the upcoming winter season calls for copious amounts of snowfall, according to the experts. The winter forecast is welcome news for snowmobilers who are already preparing the trails, riding areas, and their snowmobiles. Work has begun on trails and riding areas across North America – which are always being improved with new signs, new bridges (if needed) and care and maintenance to the overall infrastructure. Go Snowmobiling/Take a Friend Snowmobiling campaigns are being planned and expanded

as more snowmobile clubs and associations are helping introduce new riders and others to the sport each year. Visit the www. gosnowmobiling.org website to see the Go Snowmobiling / Take a Friend guide. Recent surveys highlight that snowmobilers are active outdoor enthusiasts participating in many activities such as fishing, hunting, camping, boating, etc. Sales for 2015-2016 in the US totaled 56,006 new snowmobiles, while snowmobile sales in Canada showed 44,431 new snowmobiles sold. Sales in Europe were steady at 20,000 new snowmobiles sold. Based on new economic impact data, snowmobilers generated more than $34 billion dollars in economic activity and supported record collection of tax revenue to local, state, and federal government agencies. Club and Association participation is increasing and supporting the snowmobiling

infrastructure. Previously owned snowmobiles are increasing in market value. The supply of used snowmobiles continues to be relatively low, but yet available to the many new snowmobilers interested in entering the sport with a proven, well maintained product. The sale of parts, garments, and accessories has been very strong as well as the sales of snowmobile related gear, trailers, etc. Record sales of pick-up trucks in the US and Canada point to a positive future for snowmobiling, since most pick-up truck owners are outdoor enthusiasts who enjoy snowmobiling and outdoor winter recreation. Snowmobilers continue to purchase high-tech products for their use and enjoyment and are eagerly embracing new global positioning and communication equipment for their snowmobiles. Snowmobilers are very safety conscious and are improving

their preparedness for a safe snowmobiling winter. A growing numbers of snowmobilers participate in mountain riding. With this continued increase in mountain riding, there is special emphasis on avalanche safety equipment (such as beacons, shovels, etc.) and participation in avalanche safety awareness classes. Snowmobile dealerships are well positioned to take advantage of the growth potential this year, and with the strong La Niña forecast, many can expect early snowfall that will last through the winter. Snowmobilers are excited about the upcoming winter. You are invited to like us on Facebook at www.Facebook. com/GoSnowmobiling and tell your friends too! know winter is just around the corner because I returned home from work on Labor Day to be greeted by the arrival of one of my sons from college. He had that cheesy grin on his face when I pulled up the driveway that I know all too well. My attention was immediately drawn to yet another used snowmobile in the back of his pick-up. The story was almost cliché amongst my children… “the deal was just too good to pass up…”, “I had driven past the sled out in front of someone’s yard many times and the price just kept dropping with each passing…” The better news is that he has a good summer job and it comes out of his pocket, not mine. We proceeded to unloaded the sled in the back yard next to three old riding lawn mowers, a 1960’s vintage Duramatic aluminum boat with 40 horse Chrysler outboard that appeared this summer, and an old collapsed bobhouse. Let’s hope “The Old Farmer’s Almanac” forecast has it right with promised cold temperatures and seasonable snow across the state. For the last several months, conservation officers have been extremely busy with the continued growth of the wheeled OHRV business. Without question, there has been a significant positive economic impact along with thousands of new and returning riders to Coos County and other parts of the state. Several organized events, expanding riding opportunities and hundreds of miles of open trails and road systems have created a large draw for riding enthusiasts. Many dedicated volunteers, clubs, NHOHVA, and state agencies, along with generous landowners are to thank for much of this new opportunity. In Fiscal Year 2016, over 30,000 wheeled OHRVs were registered. This growth has also brought increased and substantial challenges for law enforcement at

NHFG as well as state, local and county police enforcement. There are important connections between OHRV and snowmobile activities. First, many of the volunteers that do much of the work are both snowmobile and OHRV enthusiasts. Other common ground includes legislative overlap, business interaction, state and local government agency involvement, and most importantly, trail use and landowner overlap. As we move into future riding seasons, it will become increasingly important for both groups to communicate effectively in order to responsibly manage the resource, landowner base and sport. OHRV Volunteer Safety Instructors — Please remember to contact OHRV Program Assistant Dennis Etchells, Jr. at (603) 2713129 at least 30 days in advance to schedule Snowmobile/OHRV Safety Education classes so that he can make arrangements to collect course materials and packets. As a reminder, we offer the traditional free snowmobile/OHRV course at locations throughout the state as well as an online safety education course as an alternative option for a fee. For information on both course options go to ride.nh.gov. To all those who volunteer their time and talent to teaching others about safety education and respect for generous landowners, we wish to express our sincere thanks and gratitude. Without your support, quality OHRV and snowmobile safety education would not be possible. Stay tuned for more information about a future OHRV Instructor Appreciation Dinner and training event. If you have a snowmobile event to plan for this riding season, please remember to submit an event permit application to my office at least 30 days prior to the event. * Tr i - S t a t e Snowmobile Reciprocity Weekend dates will be January 27, 28, and 29, 2017. Be sure to make your plans early and book reservations now for this signature New Hampshire winter event. As the weather continues to cool, I wish you good luck over the hunting seasons. Don’t forget the NHSA Grass Drags in Fremont October 7-9. We are looking forward to a great and snowy winter. Ride Safe ❄

the 2017 season. We were excited to host three campers this summer from the neighboring Gilford School District. Nathaniel attended for six weeks. Devin attended for three weeks, and Ella attended one week. Each student attended with their school aides, who were a huge help. The three of them had an absolute blast and we look forward to welcoming them back next summer. This summer, our campers made great connections with new and returning staff from Ireland, Wales, South Africa, and England. Our new staff included for counselors from the UK, one from Wales, and three from Ireland. We welcomed back Catherine, (England—4th

year,) Sarah (South Africa—2nd year), Glyn (Wales—2nd year,) Mhairi (Scotland/UK—2nd year), Mike (VT/NH—5th year), our RN Rosemary (VT/NH—5th year), and my assistant Nicole (RI/NH—4th year). Thank you, everyone, for a tremendous summer. As we head into the fall, we are already busy planning for next summer at Camp Sno-Mo. We are eternally grateful to our friends at NHSA for helping to make so many camping dreams come true. ❄ Black

hat a summer at Camp Sno-Mo! From swimming and hiking to archery and high ropes, we did it all. Most importantly, we made new friends and new memories. This summer we proudly served more than 155 campers — this is the largest number of campers we’ve ever seen in a season. It was pretty cool! This summer was also a mix of tradition and new experiences. On the tradition end, our friends at the NH Fish & Game Department stocked our pond in July for a fun day of fishing by the shore for our campers. On the new experiences end, a camera crew was onsite to do some filming for the Animal Planet and a special they are working on about the NH Fish & Game Department. We’ll get you more details on the air date as we know more. The Weare Winter Wanderers held their 2nd Annual Poker Run for Camp Sno-Mo at the beginning of the summer, coinciding with NH Bike Week. They had a fantastic response from local vendors supporting the event. Steve Jones of the Scrub Oak Scramblers invited me to join him for a radio interview promoting their Annual Steak and Lobster Feed at the Danforth Bay Resort in Freedom NH. My staff and I attended the event and were proud to support this club and their outstanding fundraising efforts for our campers. One of my staff members was the winner of the 50/50 raffle and she kindly donated her winnings back to camp. She has requested that it be used toward a new shower chair that reclines for the campers for

PO Box 130, Belmont, NH 03220 www.belmontbogiebusters.org By Jen Parker, Secretary Hello everyone! It’s been a slow summer so far. The Bogie Busters participated in the annual Belmont Old Home Day and received a lot of positive feedback from the community and landowners about club activities. We will be assessing trail work needs and scheduling work parties, so watch our website and Facebook page for info. If you are interested in helping with trail work, please contact Jeremyah or leave us a note on Facebook. Our next club meeting is September 18 at 8 a.m. at Shooter's Tavern in Belmont. We will be discussing the Race Into Winter, which is fast approaching. We are always looking for volunteers for this event. It's a great way to meet other snowmobilers and fundraise for the club. Let’s pray for snow and get those snowmobiles registered this winter.

We have been fortunate as a club to receive additional donations to trail maintenance from our members over the years — it is greatly appreciated! We assure you that we are prudent as a board in how we spend those dollars. We had some changes to the board this year with Walter Moore stepping down. Thank you, Walter, for your service to the club. Steve Janaitis has again been appointed as our Trail Administrator, so he will remain on as a voting board member. George and Cheryl Higgins will continue to work on membership. At the annual meeting, Bill Gassman was elected as a Director. Thanks for volunteering! He joins me along with Eric Erving, as

Mountain Meadow Riders Snowmobile Club PO Box 342 Conway, NH 03818 www.mmrsc.net Facebook.com/MMRSCNH By Clem Paquette, President We hope you all had an excellent spring and summer! We had a great summer here in the White Mountains, although it has been really dry. Let’s hope that the precipitation comes in the form of snow this winter to make up for the lack of it last season. We had a wonderful summer social with lots of food, including a pig roast, and lots of fun in spite of it being one of the few rainy days of the summer. Thank you to Ed Sarro for hosting the event, Roger Garland for supplying the pig, and the many others who helped to make it a great day. If you are looking for a way to enjoy the great outdoors during the year when there is no snow, the club decided to change things up this year, and so we are raffling a 2016 Can-Am Outlander. The Outlander is on display at Profile Powersports, so feel free to stop by and check it out. Raffle tickets may be purchased our website, www.mmrsc.net. The drawing will be held on February 11 at our annual Bonfire. If all of the tickets are sold sooner, the drawing will be held sooner. Only 500 tickets will be sold, so be sure to get your tickets soon because with such great odds at a chance to win, the tickets will sell out quickly. As we head into fall, trail maintenance will be on our agenda. There is always brush cutting and clearing to be done on our trails. Work parties will be organized throughout the fall and our Trail Master appreciates all who are willing to help with the work. The work parties usually last four to five hours and usually end with good eating. Please contact Colin at (603) 662-7790 if you would like to join the fun, food, and, well, hard work. To keep up-to-date on club news and events, please visit us at www. mmrsc.net or at Facebook.com/ MMRSCNH.

Ossipee Valley Snowmobile Club PO Box 261 West Ossipee, NH 03890 ovsc.net By Marie Kaye, Membership Chair In spite of last winter’s snow drought, members have been busy working on trail improvements in anticipation of an old-fashioned snowy winter. Several new

PAGE 15

bridges have been built in the Wonalancet area to allow for improved grooming. As fall approaches, plans are underway for brushing out trails. Stay tuned to our website, ovsc.net and our Facebook page for information on work parties. Members should have received applications in the mail for the coming season. Let’s be positive about a good winter, and get those applications in as soon as you can. As in the past, you can join by mail by sending in your paper application with a check, in person at our club headquarters on Route 16 in Tamworth, or on our website using PayPal. This year you can also join on NHSA’s on-line membership website. Our club information can be found under Carroll County clubs. No matter what method you use, your dues are essential to the future of our club and we appreciate your loyalty. We are reminding people that the Grass Drags are fast approaching. This is a great way to earn money for our club in exchange for a few hours of work. Each hour you work earns $10 for the club. You can work as many or as few hours as you wish, and you can also volunteer before or after the event for pre- and post-work that must be done. All of it counts! E-mail the club at email@ovsc.net for more information, or contact NHSA directly. As a reminder, club meetings are held at 5 p.m. on the first Saturday of the month at Canoe King on Route 16 in Tamworth (across from White Lake State Park). All club members are welcome. Our first meeting is scheduled for October 1. Hope to see you there!

Scrub Oak Scramblers PO Box 185 Madison, NH 03849 SOSSC.COM By Dave George Hope you had a great summer. Fall is in the air and hopes of a white winter are in our minds. This is the time of year that we get into full swing with club work. Trail work will gear up and help is always needed. Check in with our website and Facebook page for information. The Grass Drags booth is always in need of a big crew and Sean has been working hard to get it organized, so if you can spare a day or two or three, then please consider it. All the proceeds go back into the trails. We were invited to Profile Powersports in July to offer our food booth. Thank you to Scott Continued on page 19

Belmont Bogie Busters

As summer starts winding down, we are starting to prepare for the 2016-2017 snowmobiling season. Thank you for your support of the club and our activities. All of us were disappointed in the weather last season and we are hoping for great riding weather ahead. We have to prepare the same way each season — snow fencing, signs, equipment maintenance, etc., regardless of the past season’s weather. With the exception of purchasing a brush cutter that can be towed behind our Gator, and a new trailer that allows us to move the Gator with brush cutter attached, we have made no other major purchases. Our 2016/ 2017 grooming fleet will be: • 2009 Tucker 1000HD with 8X14 MM Drag (smaller because to weight to pull up Red Hill) • 1997 Tucker 1000 with 8X16 MM Drag • 2013 Skidoo Skandic SWT with MM 4X8 Drag • 2014 John Deere Gator with 6X12 Drag

Vice-President; Cathy Erving, as Treasurer; Lea Bane, as Secretary; Jeff Clarenbach, as Director; Jim Salerno, as Director; and Brian Hall, as Director, in comprising the MSC Board of Directors. Bill jumped in immediately and has undertaken the production of a new trail map. It will be complete with GPS coordinates, easier to read and will be printed on weather resistant stock. I have seen a draft and it looks awesome! Thank you to Bill and Eric for going out on the trails to capture all of the coordinates. Words cannot express how much I appreciate our great volunteers. I almost hate to mention them by name as, invariably, I forget to mention huge cogs in our works, but feel that I need to recognize some people here. Rod MacDonald, who does so much behind the scenes, but more importantly spearheads our construction projects (he performed major bridge re-decking on the Skelley’s side of town this summer). Bill Keating can often be found with Rod or doing some welding (along with Paul Nerney). Eric is always out doing trail work (unless he is out to sea as a merchant marine). Pete Keenan has become the king of brush cutting. Karl Eichorn has taken on maintaining our web page and has improved it dramatically. I will acknowledge others as we move forward through the season, but to all, thank you! You make my job easier. Cathy Erving will continue to coordinate our social calendar, but is looking for help in heading up specific events. We take the summer off, with our first Board meeting being held this weekend before Eric heads out to sea for a few months, so we have not nailed dates down, but our overall plan is a November Meeting/ Potluck, a Christmas Party, January Bonfire/Open House, and an Italian Potluck/Meeting, February Progressive Ride, March Potluck Dinner/Meeting, and April Annual Meeting. Please let me or Cathy know if you can help with any of these events — we need to take some pressure off of her, but also get some fresh ideas. We are looking forward to a great, snow-filled 2016-2017 riding season here in Moultonborough. I will be heading out the weekend of September 10 to assess the trails throughout town and develop a work plan. We will begin trail work in earnest on September 17, beginning at 8 a.m. from our garage (on Highway Garage Drive), and continuing every Saturday until the snow flies. I hope to see some familiar and new faces.

Continued from page 15 Majowicz and Mike Roberts for running a smooth cookout. In August, Steve Jones had a very successful Lobster/Steak Feed and raised a whole bunch of money for Camp Sno-Mo. Thank you to Steve and his awesome crew for all their hard work. The very next day was the club kayak trip, which was well attended and fun had by all. Thanks Sean Pinard for arranging it. Thank you to all who participate in our very special club and who make it one of the best clubs around. Stay tuned for a great season. And please join us for general meetings the third Saturday of each month at 7 p.m. throughout the season.

Seven Lakes Snowmobile Club PO Box 311 East Wakefield, NH 03830 sevenlakessnowmobileclub.com By Bob Lundgren

program did not come into play for this purchase, so we had the trade-in for the old one and the loan. We have a challenging trail system to maintain, but we try our best to work toward great riding conditions for our members. The Tucker that was replaced is a 2001 model, and the new one is a 2009, which is similar to the 2010 model we purchased five years ago. There are many other reasons that this makes sense for us, which are too numerous to explain. The bottom line is that it makes for better trails. You’ll recall that last season was a bummer for most of the region, but one positive result was that our groomers did not sustain any wear or tear. We continue to struggle with a reroute of the so-called “Dick Doyle Memorial Trail.” You’ll recall that a key section in Ossipee ran about a mile of unused railroad track up to Route 171. Unfortunately (for us), the railroad rebuilt much of that section and will no longer permit us to even cross those tracks since they are now active. We are continuing to explore alternatives, but landowner issues, development and terrain are problematic. If we manage to solve this, then we’ll make it known, but for now the trail will be closed. In July we were asked by the Trails Bureau to send some people to the walk on the rail trail with Senator Shaheen. The walk was to show the rail trail and to discuss future plans to complete the 14-mile trail to Wakefield. Paul Desmarais (TRAC) and Bruce Stuart, president of the rail car group, along with Parks and Recreation people, plus four from SLSC made up the majority of the group. There were others there as well, (possible newspaper people) but I’m not sure who they were. We walked from the boat launch/ parking area on Crescent Lake (Wolfeboro) to Albee beach about a mile. Don C and I walked back with head of Parks and Recreation, Phillip Bryce, and talked about snowmobiling, our involvement in the trail and the groups that use and maintain the trail year round. We maintain the rail trail from Sanbornville to Cotton Valley. We have been having three major fundraisers every year for many years. Our volunteers have worked at the New Hampshire Motor Speedway in Loudon during two major races in the Sprint Cup series and then in October at the Grass Drags in Epping. We had one in Loudon in July and the next will be on September 23, 24, and 25 at the same venue. The Grass Drag work is spread out from

SNO-TRAVELER

PAGE 19

mid-September to mid-October. The work in Loudon involves trash management (not bending over picking up cigarette butts) and in Epping it involves setup and take-down of equipment. The Club is paid for the work of our volunteers on an hourly basis. This an opportunity for the rank and file membership to get involved, even for a day, to help the financial well-being of the Club. I might add that by doing this you get to see events that you’d otherwise have to pay to see. When you get a plea (usually by e-mail), please respond to help. This is directed to all members, especially the younger ones. We look forward to your support and another season of snowmobiling in Greater Wakefield. That’s all for now. Enjoy the New England autumn.

Wolfeboro Snowmobile Club PO Box 268, Wolfeboro Falls, NH By Sue Gaudette, Secretary The WSC faithful are currently on summer break. At the last meeting of 2016, we confirmed election of officers and board of directors, which will be remaining the same as the previous season. We hope that this will be the only ‘likeness’ to the very disappointing 2015-16 snowmobile season-thatwasn’t. There is not too much to report as of yet. Our club’s first meeting will be next month, and we will be gearing up to start some trail work parties. Our grooming machines have both undergone a full overhaul and service, and unfortunately had no use last season, so other than clearing off some cobwebs and clean-up, they should be good to go. Hopefully, they will be worked to death this coming winter. Until next month — and fingers are crossed that we will have a great winter — remember to offer up some time to your club. The work does not get done by itself, and your club needs your support now more than ever. Join early and give some time!

Hooper Hill Hoppers PO Box 142, Walpole, NH 03608 www.hooperhillhoppers.com By Michael Powers, Club News Our Annual Club Dinner and Meeting was held on Saturday, April 23 this spring at the Walpole Town Hall. As usual, the food was fabulous and we even had a specially decorated cake. We also elected our new officers for the upcoming year: Matt Beam - President, Andy Westover Vice President, Dave Westover – Treasurer, Katie Beam – Secretary, and Ken and Wendy Whitton – Trailmasters. We learned at the annual NHSA spring meeting that due to the lack of snow and subsequent registrations that there would be

little to no Grant in Aid for the next two years. With that in mind, we started our fundraising efforts early. We started by doing all of the cooking for Pinnacleview’s Open House on Saturday, June 4, and followed that up on the 5th with our own Yard Sale. The allday rains for the Yard Sale did not help us in any way. In late August, we once again hosted a cooking event for the 5K giveaway by Country 104.9. The Grand Prize drawing was held at Pinnacleview Equipment. The summer is now coming to a close and fall will soon be here, so it will be that time of year to take an inventory of our bridges and trails to see what needs attention. I know we have a lot of bridges that either need re-planking or replacement. With no help from the state, and an unpredictable upcoming winter, we will have to choose wisely as to what gets done and what gets just a patch. Once again, we will be helping out at the "Scotties Good Food" booth at the Grass Drags on October 8 and 9. We need volunteers for this event, so if you can work one or both days, then please call Matt Beam. Please help and volunteer for at least one day. Continued on page 20

Ah, it’s late August and I felt cool breezes blowing a couple of days ago. However, the weather forecast is for at least two more hot and humid days. Anyway, another season is about to begin and as we have in the past, our core-group members have kept things going even though the ice and snow from last season melted long ago. Even though it’s still early, it’s not too early to renew your Club and NHSA membership. Our secretary, Nancy Clifford, has asked that you be reminded that there are three ways to renew or join: online through NHSA (nhsamembership.com), online through PayPal on the club website (sevenlakessnowmobileclub. com), and through snail mail after printing out an application from our club website. In this issue of Sno-Traveler, there will be instructions as how to renew or join through the NHSA website. If you renew online you should do so on a device that has a printer since you will need to print out the membership verification form. This is needed to get the club discount when you register your snowmobile. When you complete the application and make your payment, please consider a donation to the groomer fund. “Why?” you ask. It’s because we acquired a new Tucker groomer to replace the old one used on our south trails and we had to borrow money to do this. The “new” one was used, but it is quite a bit newer than the one it will replace. Unfortunately, the Grant-in-Aid

The Ridge Skippers Snowmobile Club (RSSC) was brought back into service, and rejoins the ranks as one of the first ten snowmobile clubs in New Hampshire. We are happy to restore this club to active service, bringing more funds and equipment to our local network of trails. Our system is comprised of trails in Sullivan, Nelson, Roxbury, Marlborough, and Harrisville. The winter of 2015-2016 left a lot to be desired — the trails remained closed for the season due to low snow. This fall, with the leaves starting to turn, we plan to have several work weekends (keep an eye out for notices about those) to cut limbs out of the way, put out signage and ensure the trails are safe when the white stuff does come. Please visit www.ridgeskippers. com for more information about the club and how to contact us, and for trail maps, local webcams, weather, and the status of the trails.

Colebrook Ski Bees PO Box 125 Colebrook, NH 03576 www.colebrookski-bees.com The first snowmobile magazines have come to the house and the leaves are changing in the North Country — a sure sign of what is just around the corner. Hopefully, we will all be riding again, with a longer season than we had last year. We in Colebrook have been busy for quite some time now. We have been surveying work on trails and bridges that need to be done, doing fundraising. To find out how you can help out the club, with repairs, building projects, as well as fundraising through the cook shack, see our website www. colebrookski-bees.com or our Facebook page. We can sure use some help. We had the cook shack at the North County Moose Festival at the end of August, and had our 6th annual Golf Tournament the same weekend which was held at the Colebrook Country Club. The tournament was very well attended and featured a Hole in One contest. The winner would win a 2017 Skidoo Blizzard 800etech! Unfortunately, nobody won. Thank you to all participants, volunteers, and especially the sponsors which helped make it such a successful event. Coming events include the NHSA grass drags in Fremont, NH on October 7-9. Our cook shack will be there. If you are a Ski-Bee and want to help, contact us through Facebook. We also have our Landowner/Volunteer appreciation dinner on October 15. We would not have a club with trails to ride on if not for the generosity of our land owners and the work of our volunteers. We have several new officers that were elected by the club this year. Even though last season, for most New Hampshire snowmobilers, was one to forget, this coming season HAS to be way better. We need to be positive! When you join a club, join a club where you ride. The clubs have very limited monies to work with and every little bit helps. Last but not least, volunteer when you can.

EARLY FALL 2016

Pittsburg Ridge Runners Snowmobile Club, Inc. 17 Dickson Lane Pittsburg, NH 03592 www.pittsburgridgerunners.org Greetings, We begin another season with a positive attitude that there will be early snow and plenty of it. We had an early end to our season last year, as everyone is aware. We only groomed 1,130 hours versus 3,000 in years past. We ended the year’s events on a positive note. Our steak feed was a tremendous success. We had a full house, and at the end, awarded the raffle sled to Robert Jacobs of Manchester, New Hampshire. Rob is the generous provider of the winter fireworks display that we have been enjoying the last few years. This was a particular pleasure to present the sled to him and his family. We are awaiting delivery of our new groomer this November. We are also waiting to hear about our application for a Recreational Trails Program Grant to use toward the purchase, thus mitigating the need for a mortgage. We have contracted to sell our 2008 groomer to the Rangeley Lakes Snowmobile Club. I want to send out a “thank you” to Warren Chase of Warick Management Company for the generous donation of time and a machine to reset a culvert on Trail 140 behind Hidden Acres Campground. Warren and company have always been generous toward the club. Please offer your thanks when you see him. We have sold more than 400 raffle tickets so far. Be sure to get yours early or you might miss out. We sold out two weeks prior to the Steak Feed last year. This is our best fundraiser and has become more important now that the vintage races are no longer going to provide revenue.

Swift Diamond Riders PO Box 331 Stewartstown, NH 03576 www.swiftdiamondriders.com By Vicky Schmartz, Secretary Hi, Everyone. I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer. The weather has been absolutely beautiful here in the North Country. But, fall is approaching and we should all be thinking about getting our machines tuned and the trailers ready to roll. Thank you, Vinnie, for being the chef! Memberships are available online for all who are renewing or becoming first time members. You can go to our website Swiftdiamondriders.com and print off the application or do it online. Our website will be updating soon. It will be more user-friendly to all. Alexandria Ledge Climbers 80 Patten Road Alexandria, NH 03222 AlexandriaLedgeClimbers.org By Lucy Ford Welcome to the 2016-17 season. As we all know, last year was a bust. Due to lack of snow, we never even opened the trails. However this year, if the weather men are right, we are going to have a great season with lots of snow. We did do some needed repairs to the Sno-Cat at the beginning of the season to get everything ready. This year, we should be in good shape. One weekend should get it ready for the upcoming year. We do have some trail work that will need to get done, but with limited funds this year, we

will need to prioritize the most important projects first. We have had 4X4s and ATVs running on our trails up by four corners, and this has led the landowner to cut trees down to try and keep them out. We could be next. Dennis contacted Fish & Game, and hopefully, they will be able to find the people responsible and deal with them. We were unable to do the trail side cookouts last year due to lack of snow, so we will try to do this year. I will put them in the calendar of events. Anyone wanting to help, please contact me at (603) 744-5497. Bob Armstrong has been doing a great job on the website and you can now join the club online, or send the membership form back to me and I will do it for you. We have the opportunity to work at the Grass Drags, and I am looking for a few volunteers who would like to help. The club gets paid for every hour a volunteer works. This could be a great fundraiser without any outlay from the club. They also need help before the event to set up and after to take down. We also get paid for this, and no training is required. Dennis and I will be working this year. Some of you probably are aware that I have taken the position as Assistant Grafton County Director and will be giving you updates on the County and the NHSA in monthly newsletters. Anyone interested in the county meetings is more than welcome to come and represent their club and find out what we are all about. Meetings are every third Wednesday at Baker River Club House at 6:30 p.m. We have had a couple of new people take the grooming test and hopefully, we will be able to use them this year. Congratulations to Bob Armstrong, Chet Caron, and Lance Masi. If anyone has any questions or ideas for Club fundraisers, please call me at (603) 744-5497. THINK SNOW!

Hardy Country Snowmobile Club P.O. Box 43, Hebron, NH 03241 hardycountrysnowmobileclub.net hardycountrysnowmobileclub@yahoo.com By Jen Lloyd, HCSC Secretary Since it is humid and warm as this is being written, it’s hard to imagine in a few short months we will be wearing layers and grooming the feet of snow that we are owed from last year. Unfortunately, all the projects planned are on hold, as we are still waiting to hear if we will be awarded the RTP Grant applied for in early June. Trail work will begin soon. Look for postings on Facebook and our website for the official start date and what work will be done. The meeting spot is at the Hebron Village Store on Sunday mornings. There are many ways in which you can join Hardy Country Snowmobile Club. We are part of the online program, as well as the traditional ways of mailing the application and at our local businesses that support us including: the Hebron Village Store in Hebron, Outdoor Performance, Newfound Grocery in Bridgewater, and the Trading Post in Bristol. We appreciate all our members and all those who generously donate their time to make our trails the best they can be. Our next meeting will be in October. Check Facebook and our website for details.

Although last winter was a disappointment, Robert Lockwood’s efforts resulted in his winning the 2016 Groomer of the Year Award from the NHSA. The Club recently gave a custom table to longtime officers/members David and Jane Graham, who had previously served as President and Treasurer, respectively. The cutter bar purchased by the Club has been installed on a drag and will soon be in use for trail maintenance. The next vintage race is scheduled for February 11, 2017. We hope for greater natural snowfall than last year. The Club continues to investigate possibilities for construction of improved club facilities, such as a clubhouse and groomer barn. Mt. Cardigan Snowmobile Club PO Box 203, Canaan, NH 03741 www.mtcardigansnowmobile.com By Debbie Mason Wow, that was a fast summer! I hope that you all had a great summer and had a chance for some R&R. We had a successful Canaan Old Home Days weekend thanks to everyone who donated food and beverages. Congratulations to Donna Beans, the winner of the cord of wood donated by Walter and Tina Buckwold. I can’t thank enough the following people who volunteered all weekend: Helen Rock and Tina Buckwold did a great job selling wood raffle tickets; Justin Montebianchi’s pulled pork was awesome; Dawn Frenzel, Lisa Thompson and Alice Sunnerburg made some great cookies and brownies; Alice Sunnerburg also made some delicious chili; Thanks to Kevin Hurley, Justin Montebianchi, Bruce Sunnerburg Keith Monmaney Chris and Katie Kondi for your help. Without all of you, the weekend would not have run so smoothly or been as much fun. We are looking forward to the Grass Drags coming up the first weekend in October and are excited to see what’s new for 2016! The Grass Drags committee really works hard to make it a successful event. A huge thanks in advance to them and everyone who helps to set that event up. Work details will begin soon on Sunday mornings. We have lots to do before the season starts, and

we hope you can help. Lots of volunteers make it fun and gets the jobs done quicker. Remember, one of the best ways to enjoy the beauty of the fall is to help your club get the trails ready for winter. We will be sponsoring an OHRV safety class November 19, the location is yet to be determined. Our club meetings are the third Friday of the month at the Mt. Cardigan Fish and Game club house at 7:30 p.m. All are welcome and encouraged to come. Hopefully, the winter will bring us many blankets of snow and a long riding season. Please ride respectfully and responsibly.

Twin State Trail Busters PO Box 858, Lebanon, NH 03766 twinstatetrailbusters@yahoo.com By Pat Congratulations to Mark and Melissa Gardner for being awarded NHSA's Family of the Year for 2016. What a great achievement to be recognized by the Association for all of the hard work and dedication they put into not only our club, but also the sport of snowmobiling. Thank you for the many years of service and everything you do (the list is amazing) all year round. We are very proud of you! In June, we had another great time at the Alumni Day parade. We loved to see the kids’ faces as we rolled by, and received some interesting looks from the adults who weren’t sure what the groomer is. It was a great opportunity to get out and promote snowmobiling in the summer months. Mark made new Landowner Appreciation and Like Us on Facebook signs that made their parade debut. They look fabulous. Thank you to the landowners who help make our reroutes a lot easier with their generous support of the trail system. Trail work will resume in the fall, mostly some cleaning up and maintenance this year. There was a small reroute on Churchill Way which has been completed. Many thanks to the trail team for all of their volunteer hours. Last year, the guys built a reroute on the West Lebanon loop and it was a beauty. Unfortunately, the groomer didn't get to make one pass over it. Here's hoping for a much more conducive weather pattern for riding this year. Please like us on Facebook (Twin State Trailbusters) for meeting reminders, trail conditions, etc. As a reminder, our meetings are held the first Wednesday of the month from October through April at the old CCB on Campbell St. in Lebanon starting at 7 p.m. The exceptions are the December

it, this bridge is 120-feet long by 12-feet wide and spans a brook that empties into the Pemigewasett River. It’s got to be strong enough for you and your sleds as well as the grooming equipment. The south end of the steelframed bridge needed to be shoredup with four refrigerator-sized concrete blocks. The center span needed newly poured concrete support footings. And before all this could happen, the decking and railings had to be removed (and then reinstalled). Phew! This project was largely funded by an RPT grant, and followed by an amazingly generous donation from Hall’s Excavation Inc. from Bridgewater, NH. Hall’s donated equipment, time, labor, and expertise — a huge thanks to this local contractor. Otherwise, we’re ready for you! Our equipment is already prepped and ready to start working. We’ve been bush-hogging our trails and will continue to do so into the fall. On the trails again this year, you’ll find our trail maps in permanent kiosks at various trail intersections so folks who are passing through know how to find gas, restaurants, and stores within our trail system. You’ll also see connections to clubs to the north, east, and south of us. We appreciate all the positive feedback from our members about our trail reports and weather conditions. We will continue to provide timely updates to you through our website, Facebook, and now on Twitter at @ BMSCgroomer. Be sure to follow us on Twitter for quick updates. Don’t have a Twitter account? Get one, it’s free! We love hearing from you! Please provide feedback anytime during the year and always know that the Club operates through a group of dedicated volunteers and welcomes your participation. You can message us through Facebook or send us an email through the website. We have changed our Club Meeting day. New this year, our monthly club meetings are at the Newfound Grocery Store in Bridgewater on the first Thursday of the month at 7 p.m. We’ll announce the first meeting date on the website and Facebook. All are welcome to attend the meetings, hear what’s going on, and meet other members who love snowmobiling and enjoy the trails just like you. All clubs exist because someone volunteers their time. ew Hampshire had the great pleasure of being the host state for The Vintage Snowmobile Club of America’s National Event Show held at the Lancaster New Hampshire Fairgrounds. The VSCA, for me, has been a great resource and growing experience in vintage snowmobile collecting and securing knowledge of our sport. I was able to attend this event along with my granddaughter, who may be a future member of VSCA one day, you never know. We certainly need our youth to take an interest, and it was certainly apparent at this event. Here are a few of the sleds in attendance, I must say, there were many extremely nice examples of early day snow traveling vehicles and these are truly only a few. It is also great to see some of the less seen machines like this Muscaro. I do not know much about this model, however, I must say that this is the finest one that I have seen.

How about an incredible Polaris TX 800, this machine on the right is all motor, with its 800cc twin free air power plant sticking out of the hood — just raw power. The sled on the left is a Polaris Playmate, a smaller sled with a wide stance for stability.

A beautiful 1938 B-7 Bombardier Snowmobile designed and built by J. Armand Bombardier. This machine is one of only 14 known to be in existance today, what a treat to see. With a weight of 2,500 pounds and a top speed of 50 mph from the Ford V8 85 hp engine, you could carry a pretty good load of people and supplies to remote locations.

Cyan Magenta Yellow Black

A good line of Moto Ski sleds, from the trail Cadet to a racing Bullet 800, this machine was very interesting with round cylinder heads. What a great display of ice oval and super modified snowmobiles.

Did you know that Columbia, yes the bicycle manufacturer made a snowmobile? This was an excellent example of the colorful and sparkly design that they built for model year 1973. The very familiar yellow machine on the left is a 1972 Skidoo Olympic. These machines were popular for trail riding — another excellent example.

A very nice Arctic Cat display with a lot of collectable memorbilia. This is a 1970 Arctic Cat 793 Panther with megaphone pipes, this machine will make some noice when fired-up. The white machine is an early model Kitty Cat made up to look like an early model Arctic Cas. Yes, Arctic Cats were red once. You can even see the miniature snow shoes made special for the display. Nice Job!

Hudson Sno-Men 41 Chase Road Londonderry, NH 03053 www.hudsonsnomen.org/ By Michelle Rodrigue Here we are again. It is almost fall, so you know what that means — it is time to get your sleds ready for the winter. I heard that this winter is going to be a good one. Our meetings are still the third Wednesday of the month at the Hudson Recreation Center at 7:30 p.m. Hopefully, we will see some of you there. We lost a great man — Andy Case (Charles & Harold Case brother). Hope you all had a good summer and get those sleds ready.

Nor'Easters Snowmobile Club PO Box 517, Hollis, NH 03049 www.noreasters.org By Doug Cleveland, Treasurer The Hollis Nor’Easters Snowmobile Club elected the following officers and directors for the 2016-2017 season at the March Annual Meeting: President - Doug Sattler, Vice President Dave DiTullio, Treasurer - Doug Cleveland, Secretary - Sue Keough, Membership Coordinator - Jeanne Cleveland, directors with terms expiring in 2019 Jeff Peters, Michael McLaughlin and Trevor Hardy. Last season, the Nor’Easters membership was down due to lack of snow and limited riding. Hopefully, we will make up for the extremely dry spring and summer with a lot of snow this winter. Our monthly club meetings are held on the second Tuesday of every month from September through April, starting at 7 p.m. at the Lawrence Barn Community Center on Depot Road in Hollis, just down the street from the Hollis Town Hall. All are welcome to attend, and membership information and trail maps will be available at all meetings. In order to avoid uninterrupted delivery of the Sno-Traveler, it is strongly recommended that you renew your club membership as soon as possible. After this issue of the Sno-Traveler, you must be a New Hampshire Snowmobile Association (NHSA) member to receive future issues starting with the Fall 2016 (November) issue. It is also a good idea to renew your club membership early so you can register your sleds and be ready to ride before snow flies and to avoid the last minute rush. Remember that this year the new NHSA club membership process will be online. This means that in order to get the $30 discount when you register each of your snowmobiles, you must be a club member and NHSA member, and all club membership applications will be online through the club website. You can also go directly to the NHSA website to join the club of your choice and get the discount voucher. All our club memberships will be family memberships that include spouse or significant other plus children under the age of 18, and membership dues will remain at $35. You cannot register your sleds and get the $30 discount for each sled until you get the NHSA voucher. To join the club of your choice, just go online to the club or NHSA website, enter your

email address, create a password, fill out the form, choose the club you want to join, charge the dues to your credit card, and get your sled registration voucher. This spring, the Nor’Easters helped the state clean up Silver Lake State Park prior to the summer season. We power raked the beach and raked up the entire park area as our way to say “thanks” to the state for letting us use the parking area and trails through the park in the winter. In May, several of our members attended the NHSA Annual Meeting in Concord where NHSA and NH Fish & Game explained the new membership and sled registration process for the upcoming season. The Nor’Easters again participated in the Hollis Old Home Day in September where we had a float in the parade and a booth promoting our sport. The Nor’Easters plan to have our annual pre-season BBQ cookout on Saturday, November 5 at the Brookdale Fruit Farm, hosted by the Hardy family, loyal club members since the founding of the club in 1970. Also, our annual snowmobile safety class will be held on Saturday, November 19. Check our website at www. noreasters.org for details on club activities. The Nor’Easters would like to take this opportunity to thank all the landowners who allow us to use the trails across their property. Our groomed trail system connects from the Hollis Town Forest and Silver Lake State Park to trails in Brookline, Mason, Milford and Wilton (Corridor 13). We hope that you all had a nice summer and we’ll see you at the Grass Drags October 7-9, where a number of our Nor’Easters members will be working again this year. THINK SNOW.

Weare Winter Wanderers PO Box 513, Weare, NH 03281 www.wearewinterwandererssc.org By Pub Director Dave Ward The summer is coming to a close, boats are being put away, bikes being ridden for the last time and our favorite season of all is nearing. The Weare Winter Wanderers never stopped or even slowed down this summer. It has been a very busy summer for the club. From having our summer parties to having our annual meeting, the patriotic celebration, and cooking at a new event for us, the NETRA Motorcycle Races to Old Home Day, we just never stopped. With the poor snow year last year and fixed costs and bills that came in when the snow did not,

fundraising could not slow down this year. We are now deep into preparing for our big cooking event, the Fremont Watercross and Grass Drags. We have been working on our club handbook, as well, which will help future Weare Winter Wanderers run the club. All this while preparing both for the upcoming winter as well as taking steps for future generations of snowmobilers and the great sport we all love — we have been very active. The trail signing season has begun and we are rolling out additions to our new reflective intersection signs as well as upgrading our standard signing. Although this was done last season, I hope more of you will actually get to see this major new upgrade. Our fancy intersection signs will now have intersection numbers added that will match our newly upgraded map. Damaged and stolen signs have been replaced. Again this year, there has been some damage to our trails and to our gates by trucks and four wheelers. This will be repaired by the time the snow flies. We have already started the planning for the 2017 NH Hillclimb Challenge. We will again have all four events plus the best Demo rides around. The NH Hillclimb Challenge is now the largest Hillclimb in the east and will include side-by-side vintage oval racing presented by the Northwood Crank Pullers, sideby-side drag racing, the vintage show and of course the Hillclimb race. It will be held at Pats Peak Ski Area in Henniker. The event has grown each year and we continue to work hard to keep it a first class event. Our Fleet of three big groomers were all run through the shop last season for regular upkeep and a few upgrades and repairs. Very little use puts them in great condition this year to get out and work the trails for you. Planning for the clubs two trips is underway. This includes an all adult trip. Locations are to be determined. If you are looking for a club that rides, races, and has lots of social events together, then you won’t find a more active club than the Weare Winter Wanderers. Whether it’s the Hillclimb race, the summer parties, trail work, the weekly night ride or the club trip(s), we are always on the move. Come join us today! Remember, becoming an active member of the club makes you eligible to get a night’s stay reimbursed at the club trip and you pay half price at the food trailer,

so come on out to the Hillclimb, cook at the Grass Drags or cut some brush and enjoy a night on the club. All of our club activities are accomplished by members who volunteer to answer the call. Without volunteers we would just be a bunch of people with sleds and no trails. Please sign up and help out. I would like to give a big “thank you” to HK Powersports and all our sponsors and volunteers that made our annual Motorcycle Poker Run such a huge success this year. This club endeavor raises money for Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo. Lots of prizes were given out and raffled off and a big lunch was served. Fun was had by all, and money was raised for the kids. Our next fundraiser will be at the NHSA Race Into Winter Grass Drags and Watercross event, October 7, 8 and 9 in Fremont, NH. See you all there. Fall is finally here! It's time for us to start working on our projects to gear up for winter. We have trails that need to be cleaned up and bridges to be fixed. We are in need of volunteers and new active members. Without active members, trails aren't maintained and eventually are closed down. Wilton-Lyndeborough trails are the gateway to the North! This year our club hopes to get back in touch with our community, welcome new members, and start some awesome fundraisers. We hope to see you out there!

Welcome to the 2016/2017 Winter Season! With many 90+ degree days recently, it is hard to believe that we are beginning to think about snowmobiling season. The Andover Snowmobile Club was busy at our 4th of July food booth on the Andover Green this past summer. With great weather and a good group of volunteers, we were able to feed everyone that came by our booth. Thank you all for your support, and thank you to all the volunteers that make this

Greetings from North Sutton! It’s hard to believe after last winter and now one of the hottest Augusts on record that we are gearing up for another snowmobile season. However, this is the time of the year to get things started. The club just made our annual appearance at the Muster Field Farm Museum Farm Days. The club runs an ice cream stand every year, scooping ice cream for the daily visitors. This year’s hot weather contributed to a sell-out by Sunday afternoon. On the same weekend, another group of volunteers hosted a huge yard sale that was also a big success. Thank you to all the volunteers at both of these events. Next on tap was the club’s first meeting of the year on Thursday, September 8 at 7 p.m. We met at the North Sutton Firehouse on North Road in North Sutton. This first meeting sets the tone for the new season with discussion on upcoming events and needed fall

trail work. We know we have a large section of trail to reroute this fall. If anyone would like to help this is a good time find out what you can do to pitch in. No experience required. Any help is always welcome. In other club news, we will host the Annual Turkey Dinner on October 22. This club event is to thank local landowners for their generosity. The dinner is also the kick off to our annual fundraising for Easter Seals Camp Sno-Mo. Everyone who attends is well fed and enjoys good company with a few laughs. There are lots of raffle and action items as well. If you find yourself in the area, come by the North Sutton Firehouse for a good meal, a good time and some great raffle items. You can get more details on the dinner and other club news on our website: suttonridgerunners.com.

RIDE HARD. REST EASY.

Wow, hard to believe it is August already! I am writing this during a major heatwave and dreaming of the cold and snow. If the predictions are correct, then we could have some snow this winter — fingers crossed. Congratulations to Bob Smith, NHSA Snowmobiler of the year! This year’s fundraiser will benefit Camp Sno-Mo, groomer operations, and trail maintenance.

Blow-Me-Down Snow Riders PO Box 221, Cornish Flat, NH 03746 www.blowmedownsnowriders.com By John Berry As summer winds down, our annual biggest fundraiser of selling food at the Cornish fair is very near. This year, it is vitally important that we are successful. We made the decision as a club to purchase an older PistenBully entirely with club assets, thus it becomes mandatory that we are able to raise money with all types of fundraisers. Our thoughts are that we can changeover this PistenBully to meet the grooming needs of our always improving trail system, including a section of Corridor 5, with minimal additional expenses. We are contemplating selling either our 2008 ASV or our 2005 Holland tractor with drags if any club has an interest for a medium-sized groomer. Both are in excellent condition and serviced regularly, and both have low operating hours. Please contact our club if interested. As usual, we are doing maintenance as required on trails and bridges, but with no GIA fund assistance, any major upgrades will be on hold for the foreseeable future. Please plan on taking a trip through our trail system this winter to enjoy the efforts our club has accomplished. This coming winter can only be better for all of us snowmobile enthusiasts.

Crescent Lake Regional Sno-Riders PO Box 992, Claremont, NH 03743 www.clrsr.com By Terry Callum, President Despite the difficult winter we all experienced last season, our club continues to move forward. As of this writing, we've done three significant fundraisers over the summer — two in July and one in August, and we have one in September and one in October. Four out of the five involve parking cars for the events held by other organizations, and one was running a food tent at one of our town's Old Home Day. I feel very fortunate to be part of a club with individuals who are committed to the efforts. We have around two dozen people who are consistently involved in lending a hand where needed. As much as we all want new volunteers/blood — sometimes just being thankful for the great people you actually have is where it’s at. At the end of last season, we had about the same amount of money in our reserves as we started with in the fall — so we are not starting out in a bad place. We spent a good deal of money and time in servicing of our equipment — dollars we won't need to spend too much of this year — and we have enough diesel ready to get through at least the mid-point of this coming winter. Membership is at its lowest level in years, but if the weather is more favorable, then we should bounce back just fine. We installed a number of gates in the late spring and early summer due to the requests of landowners. A few of the thunderstorms that we did get this year, like many other parts of NH, were relatively violent in terms of wind, so we anticipate a fair amount of clean-up work this fall. Our club meets on the second Sunday (September - April) at 9:30 a.m. in the Unity Fire Department hall. Our September and October meetings have been pushed out a week each due to conflicts with fundraising efforts. Till next time — think snow!

Hidden Valley Sno-Riders PO Box 417, Marlow, NH 03456 www.hiddenvalleysnoriders.org By Jim Strickland, President Greetings Snowmobilers. The winter “that wasn’t” is behind us. Great snow is anticipated for this year! This will be the 21st year of our club existence. We continue to provide trails in the Marlow and Lempster area that connect to our neighboring towns. The challenges

are many. In the last 20 years, the club has changed somewhat in function. In the beginning, we were a social club that needed to develop the trail system. The system is there and we need to maintain it. It requires good landowner relations, removing brush, downed trees and other safety hazards to keep these trails. We also have many bridges to upkeep. Then of course, we need to groom the trails. This is no easy chore. We never would be able to do all of this without many hours of volunteer effort. Thanks so much for all who volunteer so many can use the trails. The Hidden Valley Sno-Riders have become more of a business than a social club. We also have to do something charitable to maintain our “not for profit” status. Thus, the biggest challenge is to get and maintain those volunteers. Our numbers are dwindling and we are getting older. In getting ready for another snowmobiling season, we have upgraded two bridges to allow the large groomers to go from Marlow all the way to the Lempster store on Trail 392. We have two projects we need to work on before snow: there is a beaver dam in Marlow that floods trail 393 and a muddy section on Trail 393 in Lempster. The club cannot function without funds. The insurance for club activities and grooming equipment is now over $2,000 a year. Dues, working at the NHSA Grass Drags in October, and grooming are our biggest fundraisers. We can’t groom without snow. If you could volunteer some time at the Grass Drags, the club gets $10 an hour for your time. Contact Jim Strickland if you can help. The dues remain the same as last year — $35. The 2016-2017 membership application that can be mailed to us and the link to the online application is on our website. The online membership saves the club and you postage back and forth. Please join the club as soon as possible. Bills need to be paid even before the snow flies. The online membership will provide you with the voucher for the club assistance discount on your registration or we will mail you one when you mail us your membership. Our web site is located at www.hiddenvalleysnoriders.org. Please check it often. ❄

The Hardy Country Club is parting with its Alpine: It groomed for years before being donated to the fire rescue. We now offer it for continued service. Always stored indoors. It comes with a rescue sled with EMT seat. This would be a great dual track groomer for the smaller club. $1500 or BO. Call Chuck at (603) 966-8098. Pictures available.

Raymond S. Burton Memorial Trail Project Award Announcement

T

he NHSA Board of Directors is pleased to announce the First Annual Raymond S. Burton Memorial Trail Project selection process. As most of you know, Ray Burton was the longest-serving Executive Councilor in New Hampshire history. Although he was the District 1 Councilor and hailed from Bath, he was a passionate supporter of snowmobiling across the entire state. In tribute to him and his contributions to snowmobiling in New Hampshire, the NHSA Board

of Directors has created an Annual award of $1000 for a Snowmobile Trail Project that is both fitting to him and continues his legacy of service to New Hampshire snowmobiling. The application process is explained in detail on the NHSA website. Some highlights for 2016: NHSA offers a $1000 Award for a Trail Project in memory of Ray Burton’s service to New Hampshire and his support for the snowmobiling. The Project should be identifiable

as a Memorial (not all-inclusive, but something along the lines of a scenic view with picnic tables, short section of trail to a particular scenic vista, extensive trail signing projects, possibly a bridge, etc.) This is not a hard rule, but NHSA is looking for projects unlikely to be funded through normal Grant-in-Aid, but that will benefit snowmobilers. All NHSA affiliating clubs are eligible to submit an application. There are no required matching percentages beyond the effort to put the project together.

Packages are to be submitted using forms that are copied from BOT Summer GIA forms, i.e. an application form along with permission forms. In addition to the standard forms, a letter/essay of up to a page explaining the project should also accompany the application. Packages will be scored in a similar manner to the NHSA Book Scholarships, i.e. there will be three independent judges working with a standard score sheet with four or five categories, such as: Club Financial Need, Benefit to

Snowmobilers, Goodwill with other user groups, etc. YOUTH INVOLVEMENT will receive heavy consideration. The Scholarship Committee is to score, using alternates if needed to resolve conflicts of interest. November 1 is the deadline for packages. The Award is to be announced at the Trail Masters Meeting. The Committee may adjust dates in following years, depending on club feedback. â?„
