Getting the right treatment It is important you get the right treatment in the right place at the right time. That way you will get the best out of the NHS – and the NHS will be best placed to help everyone who needs it. This guide aims to help you make the best possible use of services. Looking after yourself With a well-stocked and secure first aid/ medicine cabinet you can treat many minor illnesses and injuries at home. • Make sure you have pain killers, indigestion tablets, cold and ‘flu remedies, plasters and dressings. • Don’t forget to renew regular prescriptions in plenty of time especially if you’re planning a trip. • Washing your hands often and well is the best way to protect yourself and your family against infections like coughs, colds and tummy bugs. • It is important to use tissues to catch germs from coughs as well as sneezes – then throw the tissue away and wash your hands. • If you get winter vomiting disease, try to stay away from other people, keep drinking - aim for a tumbler of water an hour - and take great care with hygiene. Most people will get better within 48 hours. Contact NHS Direct Phone the national health line for confidential health advice and information 24 hours a day. Staff have details of local services and can deal with many queries instantly or advise you on what to do next. Call 0845 4647 or visit www.nhsdirect.nhs.uk Ask your pharmacist We all use pharmacies to have our prescriptions dispensed and buy over Patient Advice and Liaison Service 0800 014 1641
the counter medicines. Did you know that some pharmacists also offer other services, including: • Advice and treatment for minor illnesses (minor ailments service) • Advice on stopping smoking • Disposal of diabetics’ needles • Chlamydia testing • Emergency hormonal contraception (free) You can phone pharmacies direct to see if they offer these services. If not, they should be able to tell you where to find a pharmacy that does. Your regular pharmacy may also be able to offer you an appointment to check you are taking your long-term medication in the best possible way (a Medicines Use Review). Ask your pharmacist for more details. Your GP practice More than 80 per cent of GP practices in Medway now offer early, late or weekend consultations. Contact your practice for medical advice and treatment, including vaccinations for flu and other illnesses, a wide range of tests, and - when necessary - referrals to hospital or other services. If you need an urgent appointment, your practice will fit you in or make arrangements for you to be seen. If your condition is not urgent, you can usually expect to be seen within two working days, depending on the time you need for your appointment. You can book in advance if this is more convenient. ALWAYS let the surgery know if you cannot make an appointment. That way you allow someone else to be seen and you do not waste NHS resources. www.medwaypct.nhs.uk

Only use this service if you have a medical problem that cannot wait until the next day, not for routine matters or repeat prescriptions. Contact MedOCC on 01634 891855. If they are unable to see you, or you do not have a dentist, contact the NHS Medway Dental Helpline on 0800 0141 538, who have a list of practices offering emergency treatment. Out of normal hours, including at Bank Holidays and weekends, call DentaLine on 01634 890300 who may be able to provide temporary treatment until you can get daytime dental care. Sexual health, contraception and family planning services Free and confidential contraception and sexual health, testing, advice and information are available across Medway.
