As countless families flood the auditorium seats below, choir singers dressed uniformly in concert black attire assemble on the stage above.
Sophomore Akira Cooper is one of them, taking in the crowd as she takes her place on the stage. The pressure of performing for such a large audience is nerve-wracking, and the increasing anxiety is amplified through her mind. Her eyes flicker through the dense crowd with countless eyes staring back at her, and she imagines.
She imagines that her family is her only audience, and everyone else is a blur. Once Cooper locks eyes with her family in the crowd, suddenly everything is bearable. The whispers and nerves fade away. She and her fellow singers exchange reassuring looks, and they begin their performance.
“It’s always been a big part of me. I don’t think I’ll ever lose it.”

Singing has always been a big part of Cooper’s life for as long as she can remember.
Ever since she was two years old, Cooper has been drawn to the world of music. This interest arose due to her grandmother’s influence, who also loved singing, and has always been a singer herself.
Cooper’s singing journey began by singing her heart out to the classic old Jackson 5 songs at a young age. She would sing at every opportunity. Cooper would sing while cleaning the house, sing along with her mom, and participate in family karaoke nights. Her passion for singing only grew stronger as she grew older, until eventually singing became an integral part of her life.
“Once you find your thing you kind of stick to it,” Cooper explained. That is exactly what Cooper did.
Cooper had always been more of a casual singer, but once in high school, she took the leap of faith to join North High School’s choir.

The environment was welcoming and Cooper had a lot of fun in the class. As a result of Cooper’s passion for the craft and her hard work, she passed the audition for chamber choir with flying colors. She continues to develop and polish her musical ability along with her fellow choir students today.
When asked if she would want to pursue a career in music, Cooper said, “It’s always been a big part of me, so I don’t think I’d ever lose it.” Anxiety is a barrier Cooper is currently working on battling. One tip she has to overcome it is to imagine a crowd of people watching you as you are singing alone. “I’m thinking, okay, I’m singing fine right now, so why should I be afraid to sing in front of an actual crowd?” she expressed. Regardless of whether she pursues a musical career or not, Cooper believes that singing will always be her safe space. For now, Cooper is enjoying her time in choir. She is looking forward to performing for the next big concert.
