COLLEC TION CONCEPT

Moodboard

“The true mystery of the world is the visible, not the invisible.” Oscar Wilde “The visible space from the invisible” is an accessories project that explores the role of the visible and the invisible in term of space. At the starting point, I got inspired by the idea of space from the visual artwork “One bedroom, Flat” by artist Martin Cordiano. Accroding to him, “it is through space that we connect with the world around us, however, it is not just about the space itself, but the way we signify it; the proportions we give to it, the fixed measures we attribute to it —as a way to understand it and to understand each other. Thus, the space is not just signified by us, but more importantly, it signifies us; as it crosses language, bodies and categories.”. People live in their own space which they signify and desire. In that space, unconsiously they define that things they see is visible and in constrast, what they can not see is invisible. From that point of view, the visible thing automatically becomes real, and another invisible thing turns into a non-existence. However, it is evident that they are sometimes wrong. We can take the performance photographed art by Liu Bolin or the perspective art of Georges Rousse as an example. Through their art, the visible and invisible are blended. To understand them, people have to ignore/forget which they have always believed and let themselves reconstruct the new ones.

“One bedroom, Flat”, visual art by Martin Cordiano

Through the collection, I want to delivery the idea of the existence/visible of the invisible. “I am invisible but I want to be visible. Therefore, I decide what is visible and invisible. I decide what you can see. Yet, dont let that visible image on your mind trap you. Dont trust it. To you, I am not just a window shopping glass. I am a mystery even you see me. Because I want to keep for my own the last secret. Come close and stay in conversation with me, you will understand and believe in me.” The collection includes five bag designs which are in the same concept of space-visible-invisible, but are applied into different inspiration, in purpose of convincing the true mystery of visible and invisible. For specific, I have combined the idea of the visible and invisible with the hidden door construction to create the magical surprise. Or even, I have taken the functional military backpack as a model to rethink about the perfect strictness of the military rule through a visible and invisble views. Then, I apply the phase of transparent glass to crtical rethink about the transparency by using the similar concept of 3D printing into the traditional method of making bag. Other inspiration which I use the digital print on leather also comes from the Moschino S/S 2017 fashion show.

Liu Bolin performance photographed by Annie Leibovitz for Moncler Spring Summer campaign 2017

The collection is designed following 5 steps of revealing the visibility and honesty of the invisible. The bag “0%” is all wrapped. The bag “25”%”, the bag “50%”, and the bag “75%” are slowly revealing the presentation of the invisible. And the bag “100%” is for telling all the truth about the invisible. All collection is handcrafted and sewed by hands. Besides, I also use laser cut technique. It is using the mix materials of calf leather, nappa leather, goat leather, plastic (transparent soft PVC plastic, plexiglass, synthetic glass), metal and wood structure.

Bag Description This handbag is constructed in wood, outside covered with calf leather and nappa leather. The bag itself is horizontally divided into two interior compartments. The top compartment(or shortly called the top) is used with double functions. One is as a compartment, another is as open/closed flap. It is possible to put small things (phones, coin case...) on the top. To let things on the top drop down, we just press down the top, and it is a 360 degrees- turning. The front flap is an easy quick open (magnetic system) and stopped by the hidden tounge at both sides. When the bag is closed, we can see everything inside through the transparent front screen. Thanks to this front screen, people can see things inside. However, if people look at the top, they are prevented to understand the system of the swinging top part. That is the reason for the name “50%”, which is shown the half of the visibility. Bag Description This backpack is largely fulled of occupied space. People think a backpack can be a freely huge spacious contain, however, it is a totally partly divided space. The backpack is made from calf leather and transparent pvc plastic. The outside appearance is flat, in contrast to the surprising volume inside. Through the transparent layer, people can mostly imagine the divided space inside. And then, when it is opened, we are surprised by the huge usage of metal zippers, contrasting to the simple flat outside. It means that we are likely reaching to the three quarters of the visibility, equal to 75%. It can be opened in 180 degrees thanks to the zippers with double silders head to head and the breaking space between the bottom and upper part.
