Uncovering a Collection Works from Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council’s Art Collection dlr Arts Office is delighted to present this exhibition which includes a selection of works that span over a century in time. The works selected highlight some key moments in the collection’s history – from a donation of paintings made to the then Dún Laoghaire Corporation by the Friends of the National Collection in the mid-20th century to recent works that were purchased from artists’ residency programmes. This is the first time that these works from the County Collection have been exhibited together. Many of the artists represented in this exhibition have obvious connections to the County, living or coming from here. Others show an involvement with the County that offer particular and poignant insights. The collection includes work purchased from local artists and those involved in its arts programme. But it is more diverse and also includes works purchased from younger artists, recent graduates or from degree shows.

Christ the King Christ the King, the sculpture by Andrew O’Connor, has been re-sited in the heart of Moran Park beside dlr LexIcon. The ‘Triple Cross’ of Christ the King has been standing 18 feet high as a major landmark for the town since it was formally unveiled in 1978. The three scenes depicted on the tall bronze pillar symbolise three distinct aspects of Christ’s life – desolation, consolation and triumph.

5

The sculpture was carefully removed in May 2012 to facilitate the construction of dlr LexIcon, and underwent a painstaking restoration process before being erected in the new prominent location.

The Life and Times of the Writer Karel Capek Karel Capek (1890-1938) was a major literary figure of the early twentieth century. Writer, playwright, journalist and philosopher, he was the author of utopian novels, short detective stories, utopian-fantastic plays, travel feuilletons, essays and children’s books. He is considered the founder figure of modern science fiction for works such as War with the Newts and he invented the word ‘robot’ for his play R.U.R. (Rossum’s Universal Robots). Apart from his science fiction work, he wrote a number of political works reflecting the troubled times he lived through and according to Ivan Klíma, Capek’s work became a symbol of anti-ideological thinking, tolerance and democratic values. He was ‘a man who defended man against any manipulation in the middle of a chaotic, insane epoch that was paving the way for the worst bloodshed in human history’ (Klíma). Capek helped to create the Czechoslovak PEN Club and fought for free expression. He travelled widely during the 20s and 30s, making his own illustrations for his travel books and he was a close friend of Tomás Garrigue Masaryk, the first President of the Czechoslovak Republic. If it hadn’t been for his early death from pneumonia, he would not have survived the Nazi era. His legacy since World War 2 is well established. The exhibition includes 20 panels about Karel Capek on Level 3 and a complete set of his books in English and in Czech on Level 5, courtesy of The Karel Capek Memorial in the Czech Republic.

Looking back at Killiney: Its people, the community… an evolving history This popular exhibition continues at dlr LexIcon until end of July when it moves to Dalkey Library. Explaining Killiney village and its environs, it explores its history from druidic settlement to castle estate replete with family-run dairies to bustling seaside resort. The exhibition draws on the collective lore of Killiney residents, using their personal archival photography and documents dating back generations. The exhibition includes 2 folders of documents that can be consulted by appointment.

Trading Places, a History of Shopkeeping in Dún Laoghaire The shopping experience in Dún Laoghaire has changed dramatically over the years. As well as the larger shops and supermarkets on Upper and Lower George’s Street, there was also a selection of shops supplying virtually all the needs of the local population. Smaller shops thrived off the main thoroughfare in the Patrick Street/Cross Avenue area, catering for their local communities. But things changed, many of the smaller shops that seemed part of the fabric of Dún Laoghaire disappeared. Hard to believe that in the late 1990s one could still buy an airline ticket from the Aer Lingus office in Upper George’s Street. In the early 1970s before nearly everyone had a washing machine, you could leave your washing into the premises of the Swastika Laundry on Upper George’s Street.

Curated by David and Edwin Davison Haigh Terrace Level 10 August-17 October 2015 Tours of the exhibition will be held on Saturdays 22 August, 5 and 19 September 2 October at 12.00 midday. These tours will last 40 minutes. No booking required.

Frank Browne: A Life Through The Lens Born in Cork, Frank Browne (1880-1960) was both a distinguished Jesuit and an accomplished photographer. At the age of seventeen, before commencing his studies for the priesthood, he embarked on a tour of Europe armed with a camera. Browne quickly discovered a strong affinity for photography, and continued to take photographs throughout his life. It was not until 1985 – when Fr Edward O’Donnell SJ discovered a large trunk in the Irish Jesuit Provincial’s House and found it packed with negatives and photographs – that Browne was catapulted to international fame. Fr Browne’s remarkable life is recorded in this exhibition and in a book entitled Frank Browne, a Life Through the Lens produced by David and Edwin Davison and published by Yale University Press in 2014. With wit and a sharp eye, he observed twentieth-century Ireland; life as a Jesuit priest; his experience as a passenger on the first leg of the voyage of the Titanic in 1912; his service as a chaplain in the first World War; and his later travels throughout Europe, Egypt, and Australia. Frank Browne was active in the photo-exhibition world and wrote articles for The Kodak Magazine. During this time he made 41,500 negatives. Thanks to Davison and Associates, his collection has now been conserved, duplicated and catalogued with the images re-mastered to print at a quality that does justice to Browne’s marvellous photographs. This exhibition positions Father Browne in his rightful place as one of the most significant photographers of the twentieth century. Event Frank Browne Exhibition: Talk by David and Edwin Davison authors of Frank Browne: A Life Through the Lens. David and Edwin Davison are photographers living in Dublin. They have been responsible for the conservation and cataloguing of Father Browne’s original negatives.

We Are What We Read Exhibition The submissions are in, the shortlist selected and preparations are underway for the We Are What We Read Exhibition. Thanks to all who too part in this initiative organised by outgoing dlr Writer in Residence, Colm Keegan. Colm had asked people to write a short entry on a book that made a difference to their lives, on fictional characters and places that inspired them or stories that changed minds forever. Thanks to Colm for all his hard work during his residency, firstly in Blackrock Library and then at dlr LexIcon where he was the inaugural Writer in Residence. He organised short story and poetry workshops for adults, teens and children, brought together exceptional performers, writers and musicians for his residency cabarets and was a key presence at two Mountains to Sea dlr Book Festivals. He visited local writers’ groups, participated in the annual One City One Book lineup at dlr LexIcon and read his inspirational poem Beyond This at the official launch of dlr LexIcon on 17 April 2015. We wish him every success with his future projects.

This art history course will introduce students to many of the major art movements from Impressionism to contemporary art. It will cover important styles such as Cubism and Abstract Expressionism as well as influential theoretical movements including feminism. There will be plenty of time for questions and discussion in each class. Visits to exhibitions and art galleries will play a significant role in this course so that the knowledge gained in class can be applied directly to previously seen or unseen art works. Through an exploration of various changes in art from the nineteenth century, students will be in a position to analyse contemporary art. Central to this is the ability to recognise elements of a work that help place it in the context of modern art as a whole

The 20th century has seen some of the most dramatic upheavals in world history. Revolutions have dominated the course of events right into the present century with little sign of resolution in many current conflicts. This course will examine revolutions during that violent century from the Russian Revolution to the Arab Spring. There will be a focus on the role played by a variety of figures ranging from Vladimir Lenin to Lech Walesa, Aung San Suu Kyi to Mohamed Morsi. The course will examine what conditions bring about violent revolution and how various revolutions progressed. This will allow participants to debate whether or not revolutions change people’s lives and whether those changes were positive or negative..
