above: Aerosol by Aideen Barry Topography of the Elsewhere 15 September-5 November Taking notes from the 1968 lecture by the French Philosopher Michel Foucault, entitled Of Other Spaces, Aideen Barry responds to the dlr LexIcon Gallery as a type of portal to other realities. She takes on the space as a world between other worlds, it itself housing books/other portals to other spheres. She will use the idea of the book as a device for activating the space, presenting new moving image works in intricate and intimate installations and viewing devices. There will be lots of workshops, activities and tours as part of the exhibition Learning Programme.

Creative Ireland 2017/ dlr RED JETTY 17 July-3 August The Architectural Programme for Creative Ireland 2017 by dlr Architects’ Department in collaboration with A2 Architects and Alan Meredith Studio and supported by dlr Parks Department presents dlr RED JETTY – a temporary seat that will offer a place for all ages to meet as well as rest, to be located in a number of parks and public spaces in the county of Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown over the summer months. With echoes of Dún Laoghaire Pier, the geometry of the bench starts as a line and then spirals in on itself to make a forum at its centre. It will be painted in a signal red and after dlr LexIcon, the Jetty will move around the County to Marlay Park, Cabinteely Park and other public spaces.

above: Andrew Scott by Hugh O’Conor Photo Exhibition of Irish Film Talent by Hugh O’Conor 7 July-20 August After a year that heralded a record number of Oscar nominations for Irish film, alongside an equally impressive number of Golden Globe nominations going into 2017, it is fair to say that Irish talent is more than holding its own on the global cinematic stage. To celebrate the wealth of Irish talent in this year’s programme, ADIFF (Audi Dublin International Film Festival) is delighted to present an exhibition of portrait photography featuring a selection of homegrown talent taken by award-winning actor, director and photographer Hugh O’Conor.

These photographs record the visual impact of the sky, the sun, the spires of four churches seen from the sea, and, of course, the many beautiful birds and sea creatures that share the sea so willingly with us human intruders. From photos of the past to the many recreational pursuits at Seapoint and not forgetting the majestic Martello Tower, this exhibition captures the unique elements that make Seapoint an idyll without equal. Bicentenary of Dún Laoghaire Harbour 18 May-30 August Curated by Colin and Anna Scudds of Dún Laoghaire Borough Historical Society, in association with dlr Local Studies, this exhibition tells the fascinating history of the harbour over the past two centuries. It includes a detailed timeline and it covers some of the key figures such as Richard Toutcher, John Rennie and the early Harbour Masters, Lieutenant William Hutchison and the Hon. Capt. Francis George Crofton. What were conditions like for the workers who lived on Dalkey Commons and close to the Harbour? What seafaring tragedies happened over the years? When did the last fog horn sound? There is so much of interest in this exhibition of our much-loved piers – do come and visit! dlr LexIcon Exhibitions

LEVEL 4

UCD Architecture Project: The Metals 11 September-15 October Final-year architecture students from UCD School of Architecture have generated a series of design projects connected by The Metals. These range from artists’ studios to a local recycling centre on the fringes of the railway line, a Camphill Community garden scheme and a co-housing project on sites in the gardens of existing houses backing on to The Metals, a project for modular emergency housing on the edge of Dalkey Quarry, and two projects on the harbour, a proposal for a public space on Carlisle Pier and a new harbourmaster’s office beside the Irish Lights. Aspects of these seven diverse and speculative proposals may be viewed until Open House Dublin 2017 which takes place from 13-15 October.

Remembering Maeve: An exhibition in partnership with UCD Special Collections 18 September-26 November dlr LexIcon celebrates its new Irish Author sequence on Level 5 with an exhibition entitled Remembering Maeve, on loan from UCD Special Collections. With thanks also to Gordon Snell, who donated a large collection of books by Maeve Binchy, in many different languages to dlr LexIcon. Maeve was one of UCD’s most famous and most beloved graduates and this exhibition includes many facsimiles from the Maeve Binchy Papers including items that give great insights into the creative process. It includes schematics, plans, drafts for novels and short stories, chapter plans and maps of fictitious settings. 7

MUSICIANS IN RESIDENCE 2017

Nick Roth: Nick Roth is a saxophonist, composer, producer and educator. His work explores the liberation of improvisation from composition, the poetic syntax of philosophical enquiry, and the function of music as translative epistemology. Simultaneously subsumed by an insatiable appetite for literature, his compositions interrogate the inherence of meaning in formal structure and the symbiotic, simultaneous resonance of words as sound and text. He is the artistic director of the Yurodny Ensemble, a founding member of the Water Project, and a partner at Diatribe Records, Ireland’s leading independent label for new sounds.

Mongoose: Meet Mongoose - the fierce foursome that are taking Ireland’s alternative folk scene by storm. Their music is an amalgamation of styles, from pop and folk to jazz and traditional. Rich vocal harmonies provide the foundation for their music, with influences ranging from Simon and Garfunkel to Fleetwood Mac to Beyoncé. All four members are individual songwriters, which allows for an ever-evolving soundscape, from hard-edged indie pop and delicate folk to aching ballads and playful tales of love lost. Their upcoming EP ‘Four’ explores the fusion of four distinct song-writing styles, brought together to create a multi-faceted, cohesive sound. With a debut album under their belt and festival appearances which include Other Voices, Groove, Body & Soul, Longitude and Electric Picnic, this unique band are sure to delight with their quick onstage banter,

Claire Messud in conversation with Paula Shields Studio Theatre, dlr LexIcon Friday 22 September, 7.30pm Free entry. Booking essential on Eventbrite.ie Reviewing her last novel, The Woman Upstairs, Joanna Briscoe remarked that “Claire Messud should achieve literary giant status before too long” and her new novel may just be the book to propel her towards that exalted status. The Burning Girl, is a bracing and hypnotic portrait of the complexities of female friendship. Compact, compelling, and ferociously sad, the novel is at once a story about childhood, friendship and community, and a complex examination of the stories we tell ourselves about childhood and friendship. For Claire Messud, literary greatness beckons. 11

above: Sean, Brenda, Vita and Robert from dlr LexIcon on the pier on 31 May 2017 People on the Pier Dún Laoghaire Pier is 200 years old this year! Since the first stone slab was laid in 1817, people have sauntered, ambled, paraded, marched, loitered, trudged and stepped out on the famous East and West Piers. It is a bracing walk as the West Pier is 1 mile long and the East Pier is 3/4 of a mile. More than a million people walk the pier annually and they choose this spot for their outings for many special occasions as well as for a daily constitutional! Holy communions, birthdays, first dates, walking the dog, a Sunday stroll, hanging out with friends, taking the air, engagements, weddings, and baby’s first day out have all been captured on camera at this iconic location. Now, we’re asking you to share dlr LexIcon Events

these precious memories with us. The People on the Pier Project is an initiative of the Local Studies Department of dlr Libraries. We are keen to grow our collection of pier imagery, bringing it right up to date during this auspicious bicentenary year. Silent Books Exhibition Thanks to all the many children, teachers, parents, illustrators, authors, storytellers, bloggers and booklovers who participated so enthusiastically in our Silent Books Exhibition, courtesy of iBbY Ireland during the month of May. Many schools took part in the Nation Creation Workshops with author Debbie Thomas and illustrator Tatyana Feeney (some even appeared on TV!) but we are now working on creating a quilt of all your amazing flags from your invented nations. We’ll have more news for you on that over the Summer, but thanks again to all who embraced this important and exciting initiative.
