A Hayward Touring Exhibition from Southbank Centre, London Municipal Gallery 5 June-5 July 2015

Drawing with Scissors The exhibition presents an overview of the spectacular last works of Henri Matisse (1869-1954), one of the 20th century’s most influential artists. The paper cut-outs that Matisse made during the last years of his life are among his most vibrant and joyous creations. Confined to his wheelchair or bed, and no longer able to paint, sculpt or make prints, he used paper hand-painted with gouache, which he carved into with scissors. The images in this exhibition are 35 lithographic reproductions of Matisse’s late cut-outs, produced for the French art review Verve and published in 1958, four years after Matisse’s death. Matisse: Drawing with Scissors will be accompanied by a full Learning Programme, featuring a wide range of workshops and activities for early years children and families.

The Dún Laoghaire Cushions Design Project: Children’s Library \ Above left Dominican Convent Primary School Y Above right St. Joseph’s Primary School

7

Two local school classes from Dominican Convent Primary School and St. Joseph’s Primary School worked with local artist and print designer Aoife Dwyer. Aoife brought the young designers on a walkabout through Dún Laoghaire town and down to the seafront. Through sketching and colour studies they noticed features such as ships on the horizon, rocks, birds and seaweed. Aoife encouraged the young children to be creative and develop their ideas. These ideas were then developed and printed onto fabric to make the cushions displayed here in dlr LexIcon Library.

Per Cent for Art Commission by Katharine Lamb Katharine Lamb was born and lives in Dublin; she has carried out many public and private stained glass commissions, most notably Grogans Portraits, Grogans Public House, South William St., Dublin 2 and Lucan Portrait, Lucan Library, Co. Dublin.

8

Commissioned under the Per Cent for Art Scheme, this beautifully conceived artwork, pictured, by Katharine Lamb is located on the return of a staircase at the Moran Park entrance to dlr LexIcon. The artwork is a 5.5 metre high piece of hand-crafted glass which is situated on the return of one of the stairs by the lower entrance to the Library. In a statement about the work, Katharine said, “This piece speaks to the relationship between the new building and its physical surroundings, both land and sea. Mapmaking, sea charts and floral taxonamy were my inspiration representating the geography and nature of the borough of Dún Laoghaire. The lowest point of the work is the darkest. The glass becomes progressively lighter as it moves up the piece, revealing the wall behind it. This is enhanced by the concentration of light at the base of the work, illuminating the dark glass well and fading gradually as it moves up the back of the work”.

Students and staff at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology Dún Laoghaire (IADT) responded to selected poems by the poets invited to read at this year’s Poetry Now at the Mountains to Sea dlr Book Festival 2015. Poetry Now Curator Alice Lyons liaised with Amanda Ralph and sculpture students and staff on Material Metaphor and with Cora Cummins, Jason Oakley and 3rd Year Visual Art Practice students for Parallels. Both were created to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the Poetry Now Festival. Material Metaphor came about through a discussion of the way artists and poets approach their work. What is similar, what is different? It led to an investigation about the use of metaphor in language and with the metaphoric use of materials.

Here I Am! Photographic Exhibition Here I Am! is a national photographic touring exhibition that celebrates the unique personalities of children with Down syndrome in Ireland. Coinciding with the launch of a book of the same name at the end of March, the exhibition is the brainchild of Michigan-born artist and photographer Dan Murphy. Over the last 2 years he travelled around Ireland taking some 180 photos of children with Down syndrome, aged between 1 and 13. Speaking about the project, Dan said, ‘With the book and photographic collection I have tried to capture the unique personality of each child and doing so was a lot of fun for everyone. It was a great privilege to be able to spend time with these remarkable kids and their families. In creating this book, I have experienced first hand how every child has quite simply enhanced the lives of their families, in spite of the challenges that accompany life with a child who has this condition. Mary Doherty, Chairperson of Down syndrome Ireland and mum to Aaron, aged 6, who features in the collection added ‘As a society we need to change our perception of people with Down syndrome and realise that each person has their own unique identity, abilities and personality.’ Broadcaster Brendan O’Connor, who Dan credits with bringing the photographic exhibition alive through his tremendous advice and vision said ‘The photographic exhibition will challenge those who usually look away or who stare. It will challenge them to gaze instead. Indeed it will allow them to gaze in a way that they might not feel they can in real life. It will challenge those who just glance and make simple assumptions to look properly and see individual children in all the glorious complexity that every child contains.’

Looking back at Killiney: Its people, the community… an evolving history dlr LexIcon will host an exhibition produced by Killiney Village Residents’ Association during the summer months May-June. Explaining Killiney village and its environs, it explores its history from druidic settlement, to castle estate replete with family-run dairies, to bustling seaside resort. The exhibition draws on the collective lore of Killiney residents, using their personal archival photography and documents dating back generations. Looking back at Killiney began as a photographic exhibition of the area, proposed by Jimmy Kelly, a lifetime resident of Glenalua Road. Ideas were proposed, images were gathered from as far away as Australia and many unearthed from forgotten boxes in attics! The Association gratefully acknowledge the generosity of images and information supplied by national institutions. The stories in the exhibition are local, from people who lived out their lives in a glorious part of the country, people who struggled and survived in difficult times and people with extraordinary means who helped their neighbours. Their stories capture the deep sense of connection to Killiney and its rich and vivid history and their desire to share these stories with the wider community.

Hidden Dublin with Karl Whitney. Karl Whitney, author of Hidden City: Adventures and Explorations in Dublin highlights the easily overlooked marginal zones and dark corners of our much visited and deeply mythologized capital city. Whether it is the underground rivers of the Liberties, the derelict sites once earmarked for skyscrapers in Ballsbridge or the twenty homes once inhabited by James Joyce, Karl shows us a multifaceted Dublin that we’ve never seen before. Are You Havin’ a Laugh? Join one of Dublin’s best loved writers and playwrights, Peter Sheridan, for a new show that celebrates Dublin storytelling and wit. Is there such a thing as Irish humour? Or Jewish humour? Or New York humour? Peter is fascinated by what makes Dublin stories resonate in their particular way. We all have our favourite Northside/ Southside jokes. But there is more to it than a social division delineated by the river. Come along and find out much more in this wonderful new show by a consummate entertainer.

If you’re a lover of books you have them and won’t want to part with them. Favourite characters you loved so much they’re now part of your DNA, writers whose words simply blew you away, fictional worlds so real and so vital, they never left you. Curated by dlr Writer in Residence Colm Keegan, We Are What We Read is about the books that got us hooked, the stories that changed our minds, or more than that, took us up and out of our everyday existence, so that we were never the same again. What is the book that you just can’t shut up about because it is such a huge part of who you are? Tell us about it, and it could become part of this very special exhibition, hosted at dlr LexIcon this Summer.

Regular Events at the LexIcon

Book Clubs There are two thriving book clubs already at dlr LexIcon but there is plenty of interest in starting up another one. The new book club is likely to take place on the third Saturday of the month from 10.30-12.30 and it will be held in one of the LexIcon meeting rooms.

Chess Club A junior chess club is held every Saturday in dlr LexIcon in Room 1, Level 3. This is a dropin session from 1.30-4.30pm and parents are welcome to stay and play chess with the group also.

If you are considering joining this new book club, email dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie with your contact details and we will reply to you in mid April.

Tours Due to the high level of interest in tours of dlr LexIcon, we will offer two tours every week as follows: Tuesdays at 11.00am Thursdays at 11.00am

Minecraft dlr LexIcon is hosting its first in a series of Minecraft sessions in May with Sabine McKenna. Suitable for those new to Minecraft on the PC but experience on smartphone, XBox and Playstation is not necessary either. Students will be guided through a tutorial world until they can start mining and creating their own buildings and adventures. Early booking is advised and students need to be available for all three sessions – 6th, 13th and 20th May from 3.00-4.30pm for 7-9 year olds and 5.00-6.30pm for 10-12 year olds. Over the coming months, programming for events in the LexIcon Lab space on Level 3 will commence. Keep an eye out for upcoming classes over the summer months. 26

These tours will last approximately 30 minutes and will offer a general overview of the building and the services available. You may wish to book a slot on a particular day by emailing dlrlexiconlib@dlrcoco.ie. This is recommended if you plan to bring a group. Groups of up to 20 people can be accommodated. Otherwise it is not necessary to book but meet at the Haigh Terrace entrance at the architect’s model of the LexIcon where the tour will commence.
