Welcome from NADIA Vice President, Societies & Activities Welcome to Edinburgh! Coming to university is SO much more than getting a degree and your students’ association is the best place to start searching for extracurriculars. As well as being a big campaigning organisation it is also the home to student societies and activities. Getting involved with any of these is an easy way to learn new skills, meet new people with the same interests as you and have fun!

There are also plenty of volunteering opportunities and charitable groups that you can join if you’d rather give something back to the community or the Edinburgh Students Charitable Appeal organises all sorts of fun fundraising activities if that’s more your thing!

There are over 240 societies at Edinburgh University as well as lots of student groups, so there will almost definitely be something that interests you. Societies hold regular events and socials and are great for forming communities and support networks away from home. Before you know it you might be helping the committee to run the society! Make sure you visit the Societies Fair to check out what’s on offer.

Whilst Freshers’ Week is an exciting time try not to overdo it – you can join a society at any point during the year and our other activities aren’t going anywhere either! Do what you can and feel free to pop by the Advice Place in Potterrow if you’re feeling overwhelmed!

However, if there isn’t anything you fancy there but you have a good idea of what you would like then get in touch with our Societies Team and they’ll let you know how to go about it!

Football Supporters’ Association If you love playing, watching and talking about football, we are definitely for you! We are a bunch of hardy football fans that support different clubs from around the world. We play in two intra-mural leagues while having both a radio show and regular five a side kick around in the gym.

Political

SNP

Anarchist Society

Labour Club

Socialist Society

We are unhappy with the current state of the world and are after looking for change. We believe in non-hierarchical organisation and running things by consensus. We share the common values of equality, liberty and respect and believe that by implementing these in our everyday lives we can make a difference.

ELS is part of the student-wing of the Labour Party. We meet for policy chat, speakers and socials. We act on all sorts of issues, whether they are in the local community or at a national level – providing opportunities to get involved in campus-activism, policy consultations, elections and the Better Together campaign.

We are a radical force on campus, bringing together anti-capitalist groups and individuals to discuss what socialism is. Whether you identify as a socialist or are merely interested in possible alternatives to capitalism come along and get involved in our discussion groups and events. All welcome - beards optional!

Officers’ Training

Liberal Youth Liberal Youth Scotland branch promotes liberal values in local and student politics. We host talks and debates in Edinburgh as well as campaign for the Lib Dems across Scotland. Membership is open to all and you don’t need to be a party member to join!

Officers Training Corps The Officer Training Corps Society provides a friendly, sociable environment in the Edinburgh student community, through which we hope to communicate the values and ethos of the British Army. The society also aims to support the external OTC organisation and its members.

Juggling

Yoga Society

Juggling Society Juggling Society is not just throwing and catching, it is an introduction to a world of amazing performing arts and a global network of like-minded people. No previous experience is required, we will help you learn. Equipment available at meetings.

The Yoga Society aims to offer students the chance to experience various yoga styles through classes and workshops. Yoga is a great way to improve fitness and flexibility as well as being a fantastic way to remove the stress from a busy student life.

Labour

Conservative & Unionist Association We aim to promote modern conservative values and the importance of the Unionist ideal. Our varied social calendar includes informal weekly drinks meetings, black-tie dinners and regular Port & Policy events. Don’t delay, join today!

Green

Marxist Society Join us to discuss Marxist theory and its application to modern events and activism. We organise debates, discussions, talks and reading groups based around the works of Karl Marx and other related thinkers, along with events that address current affairs and campaigns from a Marxist perspective.

Scottish National Association

Young Greens The Scottish Young Greens are the youth wing of the Scottish Green Party. Green politics places a heavy emphasis on environmental and social justice, from climate change to fair wages and free services such as education. Be part of something great!

We are a group of students at Edinburgh’s universities who believe in independence for Scotland within Europe. We divide our time between campaigning and social events and are open to anyone who wants to come along to learn more or get involved.
